Picked up this Space Duel from Santoro a few weeks back. Thank again buddy (I'm posting this so that you can see that it went to a good home... well, maybe. Let's wait for my last post.)
The artwork on this cabinet screamed out "keep original". Overall the artwork was in great shape (considering it was 35 years old), it just needed touch up work. The body had already seen some bondo work. Next it was time to clean up the front of the cabinet. Sander the cab and coin doors and applied a coat of satin black, sanded, applied, sanded applied; added t-molding:

Time to do some work on the inside. The cabinet had much of the original parts inside - power supply, sound boards, speakers. I wanted to see what worked and what didn't. Plugged in the cab and no dice. Broke out the multimeter and found that there was no AC juice to the power supply... easy fix, replaced the cord and bam, had a working marquee light - sweet! Next tested all of the AC voltages and D.C. Throughout the cab, all looked good. Next step, look into PCB, monitor and artwork options.

Found out original uses X-Y monitor which is crazy expensive. Time to wire this up JAMMA and think through my options.

You've already made the outside of this thing look damn near perfect, well done :applaud:
Is the original game board in there? If not, this might be a perfect candidate for a hi-res PC CRT and vector MAME.

Yep, WG6100s are ridiculously hard to get now. People hoard them. OTOH, a Space Duel board would be relatively less expensive, because so many Space Duels have been parted out to move the monitor into lower production vector games.
As someone who has a bunch of vector games, honestly, if the cabinet is completely empty you're better off going MAME here. Multi with the Asteroids games and maybe a couple others that fit the control scheme.

Thanks for the feedback thus far.
The cabinet is missing the main PCB / game board and monitor, all else appears to be there. Came up with the conclusion to wire it JAMMA as it would offer the greatest flexibility. However, I will keep as much of the internal components original as I can. I plan to use all four original speakers, power supply, controls, light, etc.
Had a nice LCD 1080p monitor sitting around, decided to mount it - so far so good.

Disconnected the unnecessary outbound DC voltages of the original power supply, tapped into the AC line out and wired in a new power strip. Next, connected to monitor to the strip and did some basic JAMMA wiring to test the picture. Popped in a favorite and saw what I was hoping to see:

Lol, you're right, wired up some basic controls and it doesn't feel right. On the hunt for a 19 inch CRT. Anyone happen to have the mounting brackets or a good solution for mounting a CRT/TV?

I scratch built a cab and had no idea what I was doing.
I screwed angle iron into the sides of the cab.
I drilled holes in two steel square tubes and bolted them CRT to them.
The two tubes rested on the angle iron.
It was total overkill, but I had the steel laying around.

Space Duel is just a shelf mount game, right? You don't really have to do anything other than get the right monitor and put it on the shelf. Use some good straps to secure it where the 6100 was. I would probably put some eye bolts into the original mount holes and use a some regular straps to hold the monitor in somehow.
When you say "disconnected the DC" are you saying you're still trying to go through the AR board? Or do you mean straight off the transformer? You're better off disconnecting the transformer entirely and just tapping AC at the power switch. Put a smart power strip in and you're all set for everything. No need to modify anything inside that way.

Chad, you're right that the space duel has a shelve mount. Originally I was thinking that I would de-case a tv. But then I'd be missing a frame. After seeing you're post, I guess I could just de-case the front of the tv and leave the bottom and back on... ideas?
As for The transformer, I unplugged all that's not needed, then tapped into the AC line out. The reason that I did this is, from my memory, the wall plug goes into the transformer first and then AC out to the switch and then back into the transformer before going out to the lights. I wanted to leverage the fuses and switch, so I put a power strip into that line out to the marquee light. Make sense? Or is there a better way?

Got the new vinyl CPO in, modified a graphic posted on here by mybrainhurtz (thanks for sharing). I typically like to keep as much of the machine as close to the way I received it as possible. So, I modified the layout slightly to work with the existing holes in my control panel and then added some new holes for the player buttons. Dropped some temporary screws in and still trying to determine if I want a coin button in the center or so I should get a new piece of plexi cut (using what the cab came with). Oh boy. With this being in the 'restoration' section, people assumed you would actually restore the cabinet to the original game. Now you are basically just building a MAME cabinet.
If you don't care and are persistent on going this way, you might want to consider doing something about that weird joystick setup. None of these holes are in the original position anyways.

Are you using a TV or a monitor? Unless you're going with consoles inside the TV isn't going to work very well. Too low res.

If you're fully maming the thing the better way is to just use power off the wall. Skip the fuses, the transformer, everything. Just connect a smart strip to the three wires in the cord and distribute power off of that. The marquee light probably has a small transformer of its own that is taking in 110v anyway. If it doesn't then swap it out for something you can plug into the smart strip.
I thought too he was going to at least make it able to place Space Duel.

As for the monitor, on the hunt for a 19 inch arcade monitor.... now you ---daisies--- got me thinking about the control panel. Might need to start over. I hate this thread.

I appreciate all of the feedback. Hard putting the work in and then finding out it could have been done better. But, that's what learning is all about and why next one will be that much better. Appreciate the feedback.

Refitting arcade cabinets is quite a difficult trade and it's impossible to get everything right at first try. I've learned that the hard way myself.
To make you think I've made a mockup for a possible joystick layout. Combined with a PC and high resolution PC CRT, this would make you be able to play all the mame classics comfortably, but also allow your Space Duel to actually play.... Space Duel :burgerking:

Marquee is in. It's all coming together nicely. Will need to go back and address the control panel and monitor. Currently on the hunt for a monitor as an immediate next step.

Even that is off the price charts now if you're still talking vectors. My Tempest board crapped out recently so I've been pricing up converting it to Major Havoc. Jesus H Christ. A working MH board is approaching two grand now. The Tempest-MH converter board is $250+ in the rare case you find one. Fortunately I have an MH board that I bought years ago but that converter... $250...
