Great game.  Hard.  Level 3 confuses me, what with the windmill & conveyor belt things...but I think those are only background?

I just finally discovered that I can climb vines too!

Still a little confused about some of the mechanics & gameplay.

28,750 after 4 games.

43,070 on my first attempt. Should be easily surpassed.

I wasn't doing much until my last life. Eliminating multiple baddies after grabbing the eggs really jumped my point total upward.

34,000 just on stage 1. This game is getting addicting. 45,000 after a little practice...

Tricky game--it's got some depth--I like it.  Controls can be a little frustrating sometimes.

Definitely playing 4-way.  Sometimes, I think I've pushed up to grab the rope & then walk off the ledge, not grabbing the rope at all.  D'oh!

Any new scores? I've only been able to make it to the top of the waterfall in level 4 once.

I used to like this game as a kid, but was never any good at it.

Its unfortunate, that it seems this game is just a little too flippy in the controls, and game balance seems way too difficult even on the easy level setting.

I used the 255 life cheat to see all the levels.  I believe it was 5 or 6.

The vertical wheel thing can be rode,  as can the windmill.   It appeared to me that I could only get on the windmill by dropping off a rope on to one of its platforms.   The problem however, is that I often would fall off the screen instead of being able to step off the darn thing.  Not any problem getting off on the right side... but always fell on the left side.  Ugg.   Better luck on the vertical wheel, but still fell off at times.   I wonder if 4way takes care of this issue?  I dont have a 4way setup currently.

The last level is damn near impossible.  It has a waterfall, that if the water touches you, your toast.  Took me a Lot of tries before I could whip it... and almost was luck more than anything else.   After which it loops all the stages again... but with the eggs in different places, and seemed to be more difficult as well.  I believe there was a constant barrage of rocks being dropped from the sky at you too.

I gota see if there are any vids of pros playing this thing... to see if Im missing something.  There are so many quirks and no-no's, that its hard to know what you can get away with.

Hmmm.... You've been luring them onto your rope, no?

Post by: dfmaverick on March 18, 2011, 10:15:27 pm
Not really luring them onto the rope, but I usually shoot a rope from the location of an egg to a place with multiple baddies. I'll then wait until a baddie or two come near me by the egg. I'll grab the egg and scury up the rope to elimanate the others. The way to get the monster points is to get 4-6 baddies per egg.

I've resided to the fact that completing levels is not necessarily the way raise the point total.

I just figured out today how to stay on the rope when they climb onto it... Then out of nowhere one completely pulled my post out of the ground... Just when I think I have this game figured out they throw me a curve ball.

What sorts of problems are you running into?
Title: Re: High Score Competition # 63: Roc'n Rope
Post by: Nephasth on March 19, 2011, 01:06:26 pm
Here's a weak breakdown on earning points:

Flash an enemy - 20 points
Flash an enemy while enemy is on rope - 400 points
Shoot a new rope while enemy is on old rope - 800 points (first enemy), 1600 points (second enemy), 2400 points? (third enemey), etc...
Flash enemy while in "egg mode" - 400 points
Run into enemy while in "egg mode" - 1000 points (first), 2000 points (second), 3000 points (third), 4000 points (fourth), etc...

What sorts of problems are you running into?

The cavemen & dinosaurs are all over the place--I can't get them to clump up enough to get megapoints.  At best, I can get 3, maybe 4 of them per egg.  And if I don't get them all in rapid succession, the point values go back down.  I.e., I get 2 at 1000 & 2000 points, then a pause till I get reach the next 2, & they're worth 1000 & 2000 points, not 3000 & 4000 points...

I try to hang out by an egg & keep flashing bad guys & waiting for them to come to me, but not enough come by.

I can't get above 35k or so at the end level 2--I'm floored that that score can be doubled & and then some!   :o

Title: Re: High Score Competition # 63: Roc'n Rope
Post by: dfmaverick on March 20, 2011, 05:00:06 pm
Here is my pattern for level #1

#1 rope is self explanatory. There's no other way to start. I will jump off the platform to where I shoot #2 rope. Luring many baddies down for this egg grab is not easy and I usually settle for one or two. I will shoot #3 and usually there is a caveman where the dino is in this pic. I'll hang on the rope since he is likely to get on and flash him. I will shoot #4 to the egg. Usually have to wait til there's  room to get off. If no one is on this tier, I will shoot #5 to the bird and hang around near the egg. I'll grab the egg and either shimmy up the rope to hopefully get some across the chasm, or I'll go down the vine to get some right below me. If I go down, I will go back down another vine so I can shoot rope #3 again and continue on to the end of the level without dealing with others on the other side too much. I usually skip getting the second feather. If you leave yourself enough room up by the bird, you can flash the pterodactyl for a few more points before completion of level 1.

Usually only around 10-11k on level one.
Title: Re: High Score Competition # 63: Roc'n Rope
Post by: Nephasth on March 20, 2011, 06:58:13 pm
It's fairly easy to get 20,000 points on level one with just one guy. That's a similar path that I use. I have flashed the pterodactyl several times before and never noticed a score increase... If you wait a while, enemies will cluster just under the phoenix which can greatly increase the score from the last egg.
Title: Re: High Score Competition # 63: Roc'n Rope
Post by: dfmaverick on March 20, 2011, 07:40:26 pm
Pterodactyl is like 400 when it falls out if sky.

I definitely do not maximize my points on level 1. I don't linger around on the first egg and am probably throwing points away there. The guys under the Phoenix are definitely hit and miss. Need them to line up well for a quick scurry across to just get them before the egg wears off. Normally, I'm unlikely to get any of them.

This game may click for me at some point but it certainly won't happen before Wednesday...for now the frustrating ways to die (3" falls off the rope etc) are too many and varied to have much fun lol.

Going from 40,000 the first week to 236,000 to win was impressive.
Your score beats the highest score 202,500 on Twin Galaxies for MAME.

Haha. Cool.   8)

I've always liked playing the game, but was always set on completing levels rather than point grabbing. I was always stuck around 40k-50k. Sometime during this competition, something switched on and now I can generally get over 100k.

I suppose I now have to pick a game. Decisions. decisions.

Were you guys playing with "Grand Repeated Bonus" on (I think that's the default)? If so, then the scores aren't comparable. TG specifies it off, so you only get 1 extra man (at 20K)

Yes. We were playing default. No biggy on not being comparable. If that is only with 1 extra man, that is an insane score.

I know they have the same rule over at MARP too (to prevent leeching). The guy with the top score on Roc n Rope is really good at classic games, and usually comes in one of the top places at the tournament at Funspot every year, so I don't doubt he did it with only 1 extra man :)

Tried a couple games with the grand repeated bonus off. I was able to score 110k & 150k in my attempts. I suppose if I played it that way enough, I could probably get a really good round or two that would push 200k.
