Title: MUGEN on an arcade cabinet
Post by: Dartful Dodger on July 21, 2010, 07:26:51 pm
MUGEN looks like a lot of fun, but also looks like a pain in the butt.

I was a huge Mortal Kombat fan, but I'm only mildly interested in playing it now.

I started thinking if I could play MK3 with added custom characters that might add enough novelty to the game to make me interested in it again.

Is MUGEN worth the time and energy it'll take to set up on a cabinet?

Is there an accurate version of MK3 for MUGEN, what is the name of it and which version of MUGEN do I need?

What's a good website to go to learn about MUGEN?

You can't play MK3 on mugen... you can use some characters based on mk3 characters (sprites ripped from game and same movesets) but that's as close as you'll get.

Depends on how much you are into fighting games and how tolerable you are to games of questionable quality.  For me at least, it wasn't.  Don't get me wrong some of the games can be fun,
it's just mugen is such a collossal pian in the butt to deal with that it wasn't worth the effort just to get a few characters (some of them TERRIBLE) inserted to my favorite games.

Not really.  The rule of thumb for mugen is to take a game and mutilate it beyond recognition by adding waaay too many characters.  There are exceptions, but not many.
There are some really deciated mugen guys out there who've probably done as close a job as you possibly can with the engine, but due to the simple fact that they are on another engine
the mk3 characters are never going to be 100% accurate.

Sorry, don't have a clue on that one.  MUGEN is old as dirt in internet terms.  It took forver just to get an official windows release.

The engine showed alot of promise, and if development continued we would have some nice commercial quality fighting games. But as it stands nothing really good can be accomplished, and i think most people that make games with it know this and that's why games turn out the way they do. Its like lets not fool are self's and try to make something we can't, so instead lets see if we can make a thousand player roster for some of the most unbalanced button smasher you can imagine.  Too bad this engine was not more successful. I think the main reason was the fact that fighting games in general died for a long time. SF4 has brought some of the hype back and the new MK will bring some more of it back, but in the end i don't think it will last. Fighting games pretty much died with the arcades, at least here in the US. Damn these consoles and PC's with all their good games, nobody wants to leave their house to go to the arcades anymore .

I recorded frames of myself in various moves once and a friend compiled me into a Mugen character. The novelty cannot be overstated. A shame I'm so unplayable (:

I messed around with MUGEN back when it first came out, and then again many years later, and I just didn't care for it.

There are some mortal kombat mugen remakes. I know part 1 and 2 were remade in mugen.  I found a Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 remake for MUGEN, it's on the mugenguild forum and I'm sure other places too.  Also, this has the MKT remake... http://mk-anthology.blogspot.com/ (http://mk-anthology.blogspot.com/)

Mortal Kombat Chaotic is looking pretty good.  Mortal Kombat Anthology is awesome too.... I know it's labeled as "The final MK Project".

I know MUGEN brings the WOW factor to my cabinet when I show my friends the MUGEN games on my cab.

On my friend's cabinet where we can play any game for free, we never play MK, SF or any of the other fighter game, yet when we were in H.S. and college we'd spend all or tokens on them.

I think if I can add a few characters that look like us or equally ridiculous out of place characters it would bring back the 2d fighter for us.

I guess the only real solution is to download and test a few MK MUGEN games and see for myself.  I just know there's going to be a pile of cruddy remakes, I was hoping there was a known version that was more or less accurate.

I believe that Delusional had mugen on his cab,  I can only really recommend on version (they have compiled versions wit characters and backgrounds).  It's called something like snk vs capcom ultimate and was release in 2007. All the other versions I've seen are just very messy with too many characters that don't make sense and are very unplayable.  Some of those characters though are really fun (holy ken, homer, and peter griffin for example).

MUGEN on its own is a huge pain in the butt to mess with might as well do this instead :banghead:
but that capcom vs snk ultimate looks promising may have to go find that for myself

I've been messing around with the Mortal Kombat Project 4.1
So far it plays well.  I'm looking for an exact match, if I wanted that I'd just play MKIII.

Each character has around 300 sprites.  When I have time I'll see if I can create a new character by using an existing one.  Hopefully all I need to do is change the folder name and all the files in that folder, then just open it up and swap out images.

If it looks like that creating a character will require more time and energy than I have I might scratch the whole thing.

Yes Mugen can be a pain and very   but for me, I really enjoy seeing dream matchups like Snake Eyes vs. Lion-O or even Skeletor vs. Ryu. (Haven't really played any MK characters that I really liked).

I even used a Mugen theme for my 4-player arcade base.

Thanks nickynooch. (the left side is my favorite piece.)

If only Mugen would run properly, I mean who wouldn't want to play a game like MOTU vs. Street Fighter? I would be happy to pay for a game with these characters.

jmike.... I WANT THAT GAME!!!!  If only it existed!

MOTU vs Street Fighter.  Wow.

I downloaded a MOTU mugen game with a really good intro and stuff all MOTU looking, but I think there were only 2 characters, He-Man and Skeletor, ugh.

So can you download someone's mugen "package" and just run and play that without too much hassle?  Does the hassle only come in if you want to make/add your own characters?

Or is playing the whole thing hard to configure?

Yes if you download say the Snk v Capcom Ultimate package from like BitTorrent you can just fire it up and run it without hassel I actually did find this one, and it is a solid package, although for some reason my screen blinks when playing it but that is a minor announce as someone else mentioned most of the packages you find are cramed with useless and pointless characters, there is also one I found on BitTorrent titled Marvel vs Capcom 3 that is to bad maybe it will hold me over till th real MvC 3 comes out :laugh2:

Yeah there are tons of them out there. They run just like any other game you would download.  The most work you would have to do is making full screen in the mugen.cfg file (you change the word "windowed" to "hardware" or "software".  I got Mortal Kombat Chaotic running on my cab yesterday.  Pretty awesome if you are a mortal kombat fan.

Some of the big collections are pretty cool.  I think I have a MUGEN game running like 1000 characters... Mugen 100% Hardcore I think was the name of it.

I left a link for some of the full Mortal Kombat MUGEN games in my post a little bit up on this thread.

try snk vs capcom 2007 after the novelty of all those characters runs out, it's a pretty solid games.  I was surprised, it plays well.  It doesn't have any of those cool characters, but I really like the mix of stages and music.  Although.. 1000 characters you say?  That's insane.. hmm must find it now.

the problem with ones like that with like 1000 characters it that like 900 of them probably arn't any good to play with so they are just taking up space, I find the smaller scale ones are usually much better and more balanced

I am actually putting together a MUGEN setup for my cab right now.
The trick is to test out chars and be VERY selective. Yes, it's a pain, yes its time consuming, but when the characters are all of a similar style and "sort-of" balanced it can be a thing of beauty.

Going with Capcom and SNK style chars myself. Some of the Marvel and DC chars are good enough to be straight from Capcom. AGAIN, I said *SOME*  ;D
