Title: Mortal Kombat X Arcade Machine
Post by: MK3FAN on March 21, 2015, 07:08:44 pm
I figured I'm far enough along with this project to begin sharing it. I've got the cabinet all cleaned up, stripped, primered, sanded, painted, sanded again and the full artwork package installed. The cabinet was originally a War: Final Assault that I picked up a few years ago for $150. No great loss. I originally used black t-molding but decided to change it to white. I think the white makes it look a LOT better. I also changed my mind on the CPO. I wanted something that better matches the theme of the rest of the art, so you can see how much better the new CPO design is over the original one I had.

I'll be using a PS4 to run the game and I have already successfully hacked the controller that came with the system. I just need to get another one and hack it too. So with the control interface figured out, it just boiled down to the monitor interface. I'll be using a 24.8" Tri-mode Makvision like I used in my MK9 and Injustice cabs so they all match. The PS4 only outputs HDMI, so I will be using an HDMI to VGA converter, running at 800x600 to the Makvision and it should work just fine. I may have to use 640x480, but that will remain to be seen.

That's about it for now. Thanks for reading and opinions are welcome! Here are some pics (the last 5 pics are how the machine sits currently)...

Marquee and bezel plexiglass retainers should be white.

Is that your way of saying there's too much white? lol.

Gonna agree with PBJ on this one.

Two PS4 controllers successfully hacked, fully tested and ready to interface with some buttons and joysticks. Total cost of hacking both controllers....$60. One controller came with the PS4 system. Had to buy a second one for Player 2. Already had all the other supplies...

Looks good. Wouldn't it be better to use a PC for the guts?

I'd expect the PC version of MK10 to be better than the PS4 version. Higher resolution, smoother, and possibly lower latency.

Thanks. Quite possibly, but is would have cost me the same if not more to build a PC that can handle MKX at it's peak as it would be to just use a PS4. Plus, there is the online community to consider. I could use Steam for the PC version, but all the higher caliber players and my friends are all going to be using a PS4.

You're right about the online stuff of course. Based on what I've seen of Street Fighter 4, though, these games look pretty awesome at 3840x2160 and at 2560x1440 @ 144hz. There's also the benefit of being able to use the cabinet as a straight up MAME box on top of playing MK10.

I successfully interfaced the PS4 with an original arcade monitor just now. The image looks pretty damn awesome in person! The pictures are a poor representation. One step closer to completion of the project!...

Got the machine fully wired up (except for the control panel, that's going to be tomorrow) and working great. I installed a set of 2.1 computer speakers with a subwoofer. I cut the wires to the speakers that came with the set and threw the speakers away. I spliced their wires in with the cabinet's existing speakers because they are so much better and ran the volume control to behind the coin door.

Got everything mounted and secured down. I am using an original arcade power supply to power the coin door lights and the VGA to CGA converter. I installed a power strip to power the PS4, the audio system and the HDMI to VGA converter. I also decided to install a 25" Wells Gardner K7400 monitor instead of the 24.8" Makvision that I was planning on using because since I'm using CGA instead of VGA to run to the monitor, I can use a full 25" monitor instead of the 24.8" one. Trust me, it's a big difference.

I'm also utilizing the cabinet's original wiring to supply voltage to the monitor, power supply and and power strip. The only thing I had to splice into the original cabinet wiring was the power strip. I simply used a spare 115vac connection.

Anyway, here are the pics. Thanks for looking and stay tuned for the control panel build tomorrow and the finalization of the machine!...

The control panel and white t-molding are both solid choices.  Looks great!

Those little Portta video converters work surprisingly well.  I've used their component>HDMI converter and found it performed reliably with good quality.  What's the other converter you're using to get the VGA signal to the monitor?

How are you going to get the PS4 to play friendly with a 4:3 screen?

Title: Re: Mortal Kombat X Arcade Machine
Post by: bulbousbeard on March 23, 2015, 10:36:35 am
Yeah I'm not sure how that's going to work. The PC version of Mortal Kombat 9 didn't even run at 4:3 resolutions. It letterboxed the image.

Regarding the 4:3 issue, I don't have a game at the moment, but I did test a native 16:9 Blu Ray and is displays at full screen, non-letterboxed 4:3, so I can only assume MKX will do the same. If so, and the lag is negligible, then I'm in business! I'll go get a PS4 game to test and see for sure.

That's just cropping the sides of the screen, then. Not sure how well that's going to work for a video game.

The control panel build is complete! Still need to wire it all up, but the construction and assembly is done. I had to modify the CPO to say "Start/Options" because it turns out that I will need an "Options" button because that took the place of the "Start" button, so as you can see from the first two pictures, I soldered some wires to the appropriate connections and tested it out. It's good to go. I'll be running it to the Start/Options button. I can also hear some of you saying "Wow, that's a lot of white." True, but I bought those buttons/sticks when I was still planning on using the original fan art CPO of Smoke. I'll change them out to a different color if there's too much negative feedback on them.

Also, I bought "MLB 2014" to test out the controls when I get them wired up but I went ahead and put the disc in the PS4 to see if it displayed in 4:3 without being cut off or display in letterbox. Success! The game plays full screen with no cropping and looks great! I'll post some pics of that later, so it's VERY hopeful that MKX will display the same. Worst case scenario, I'll change the monitor to an LCD if MKX ends up not being viable with a CRT.

too monochrome for my tastes but I can still appreciate it

Yeah I'm not sure how that's going to work. The PC version of Mortal Kombat 9 didn't even run at 4:3 resolutions. It letterboxed the image.

MLB The Show 2014 displaying in 4:3 full screen, non-letterbox with no cropping. The image is very crisp and clear with no issues. Still may end up going the LCD route in the end, but for now, this looks pretty damn good...(make sure to watch in HD)...

Well, the project is 100% complete. Finished up the final touches tonight and added the machine to my own "Goro's Lair." I'm patiently waiting for April 14th (release date for the game). Until then, here are pictures and a video. Overall, I'm pleased with how the project turned out...

Actually, the cabinet I used for this project was a fully populated and working War: Final Assault. I only paid $150 for it. I gutted it and sold off the boards for a decent profit. I get them cabinets locally from a warehouse. The owner used to work with one of my father's best friends, so I kind of have a good "in" with the guy and he gives me good deals from time to time.

Dude that came out great! It looks like the PS4 is displaying MK 9 in 4:3 just fine.  God I love CRT screens.

I assume you mean MKX. :)

Actually, yes. The image is great!....but....I've decided I'll be using an LCD/LED. While the image is great for the CRT, the deciding factor will be that the game icons are so small (because they are meant for HD), you really can't read them at all at 480p on a CRT. I was able to get away with using a CRT for my MK9 and Injustice projects because the PS3 outputs Component video at 1080p that the Gnobes converter can convert to VGA without quality loss. The image may only be 480p, but I swear it still looks like 1080p. There is no visible quality loss on the MK9 and Injustice monitors.

The MKX is a different story because it's outputting HDMI only, which is digital and has to be converted to analog, via a converter, then to CGA via another converter and the quality loss is too great. Again, the image looks crisp and clear, but the little details are lost. Stay tuned for a monitor swap! I promise to make it look professional.

It looks like a lot of the screen is missing due to 4:3, but some of it is compensated for by overscan.

This is what MK9 looks like on a 16:9 display:

The energy bars are pretty cut off. It still doesn't look terrible, but if I were doing it, I'd use a 16:9 screen for MK9/10.

The decision has been made. I found what I consider a great monitor. It's a 27" LED Acer computer monitor. It has an HDMI input so I can connect it directly to the PS4. I got it mounted and installed in the machine with relative ease. I needed to have it flush up against the glass, which required modifying the original bezel rests on the sides of the cabinet because the monitor is 24.5" wide and the cabinet is 25" side. I couldn't fit the monitor between them. It's no big deal though. It turned out great.

I also was able to perform some surgery on a spare bezel along with the original CRT bezel that was on the machine to make a custom bezel for the new LED monitor. It looks really clean and has a 'factory' feel to it since it's the original bezel material/plastic.

Overall, I am much more happy with the LED monitor versus the CRT. I just couldn't make the CRT work and be happy with it. Having the signal from the PS4 go through TWO converters and then to lower the intended resolution was just too much. Anyway, here are some pics. Opinions are always welcome!

But only the top retainer is a separate piece. The lower retainer is speaker grille and you'd see the holes in the mesh if it were painted white.  I think the black looks fine on the marquee.

Decided to change up the buttons a bit. I had some extra black buttons and to offset all the 'white', I changed out the button shells to black. Thinking about changing the joystick dust washers out to black as well, or the whole joystick assemblies to black because as nice as the white sticks look, they will get very dirty quite easily. What do you guys think?

I also installed new locks and the bezel 'instruction card.' I'm going to do a full move set bezel like I did with all my other MK cabs, but I can't design or get started on it until the game comes out and I have access to all the move lists for all the characters. I need to include all possible characters including the DLC ones, so I won't be able to get one done for a while. Until then, the bezel instruction card will have to do.

Great project.  I like the buttons complete white more.

I think you need to make the buttons the standard MK colors. Black or Red sticks with black washers. Probably too late to change now, but make the lightning behind "MKX" on the marquee and front art Blue.
Reprint the nether realm logo in color and slip it on top under the plexi :)

While I like the white, I do agree it's going to get grungy looking over time.  Plus its new game and your going to play it alot.  I would move to the standard button colors or all black or black button with white base.

Get rid of the white j-stick.  The look you have now is more like a car that would sit in garage and not drive, it really clean, but its not color schemed for massive amounts of dirt, sweat, oil etc from players.

Regardless.....its a sweet machine man.

Thanks.

I may end up scrapping the entire layout anyway because I found out that L2 is going to be needed to play the game and I don't know if it can be compensated for by pressing combinations of other buttons like in MK9. If not, then I'll have to add that button to the panel, when means I'll have to do a different design. I'll probably change the sticks out to black at that time, but I like the white buttons with the black shells.

So I wasn't pleased with the quality of the print on the custom Instruction Card, so today I got it professionally printed on high-quality glossy photo paper. Looks MUCH better. Just wanted to share.

Now, you'll also notice that the joysticks have been changed out to black. The control panel will be an ever-evolving process until the game comes out because I don't know exactly how it's going to end up needing to be. As good as the white sticks looked, there was just no way they wouldn't get filthy from use and I don't want to have to constantly clean them. I am sure you all understand what I mean.

Here are some pics of the new sticks and the new Instruction Card...

The cabinet turned out great.  I did a similar build but ended up selling it.  It was a PS3 based system but the viewing angles of the LCD varied too much from person to person.  You had to be at just the right angle and height or the experience was less than optimal.  I also had problems with heat, ventilation, and noise.  After any amount of time gaming, the system fan would kick in like a jet and just distracted from it being an arcade machine.  I just gave up on trying to modernize the arcade experience.  If i were to do another, I would do a pedestal with a wall mounted screen.  This would allow the PS3/4 to be mounted on a shelf below the screen to allow better ventilation.  Kuddos for the hard work, it just didn't work out for me.   Also, awesome collection of MK cabinets.

Thanks for the kind words. I've had no issues with the other custom cabs I've done because I keep the back door off and I have super quiet  fans blowing on the PS3s. As for the display issues, the MK9, Injustice and Street Fighter cabs using CRTs. No issues there. The MKX uses a 100% viewing angle LED so no matter what angle you view it from, it looks great.

So I can't make a bezel with all the characters and their move sets until the game is released and the moves, etc are made known, so until then, I threw this together real quick. It includes the original seizure label as well as the custom instruction card. Nothing too fancy. Just something to add a little detail to the bare bezel. Thoughts from those that are interested?

Man. Long night. I've been working on comping up with a layout/design for the MKX LED monitor bezel that I can use to feature all the characters from the game. Normally, it wouldn't be an issue with a CRT monitor because I'd have nearly 3 inches on each side for space. With the LED monitor, I only have about half an inch on each side, resulting in ALL the characters needing to be on the top and bottom parts of the bezel.

Since I don't have access to MKX character renders and full move sets, I used all the characters/move sets from MK9. It appears that everything should fit nicely. I even had a little room to put a 'key' stating what all the abbreviations stand for (J = Jump, etc). So check out the pictures and let me know what you think. Just imagine all the characters and whatnot as MKX characters....

Are you gonna stream some footage of you playing on the cab when the game drops?

Don't worry. The boxes will be white for MKX. Thanks!

Of course. ;)

So based on how good the 27" LED monitor looks in the MKX cabinet, I decided today to go buy two more of the same make/model and install them in the MK9 and Injustice machines. All three of my custom Netherrealm machines now have a gorgeous 27" LED monitor.

I originally went with CRTs in the MK9 and Injustice because I wanted the original arcade feel while playing the games, and they provided just that, but I was doing an "injustice" to them by not using a proper widescreen display. I also had to completely redo the full character move set bezel art for both games because of the bezel size changing so drastically.

So that all being said, here are some pics. Just wanted to share. Thanks!

NICE = your norm MK3FAN. :applaud:  :notworthy:

I still need one of those Midway CP boxes, cannot find one locally and been looking for months.

I need something similar to your Injustice cp box but with 8 straight inline buttons (or maybe a 6+2 below in order to have room for trackball).

Do you have the dimensions or plans to build from scratch by chance (are you willing to build+ship or know somebody that can?).

My Midway cab is sitting here with a Tankstick, which is functional but oh so ugly.   :dunno

Ugh not the tankstick!  Nice job up there MK3FAN. Looks great.  Those 16:9 LCDs look a little out of place to me but it seems like they display the game a little better. Nice work.

Hey DGP I just picked up a MK 1 cabinet for the sole intention of getting a template made for my KI 3 cabinet.  PM me and we can talk about dimensions and maybe even a build/ship scenario.

Hey MK3FAN,

Any reason you went with the PS4 version of MKX and not the PC version?

Hey MK3FAN,

Any reason you went with the PS4 version of MKX and not the PC version?

Because to build a beefy enough computer to run the game properly would have cost just as much, if not more than just using a PS4. Plus, I think the online community will be bigger with the PS4, but I could be wrong.

scoodidabop,

If you come up with anything let me know, I finally had a local guy PM me that he has empty midway cp boxes so I am going to see what he has.

Hey MK3FAN,

Any reason you went with the PS4 version of MKX and not the PC version?

Obviously controllers can be modified for pc but I have yet to read confirmation that MKX has keyboard emulation friendly control mapping, I sure hope it does since I have it pre-ordered and want it on my cab (let's hope it's not like Injustice).

Are you ---smurfing--- kidding me? It's like they want to fail. This was one of those games that was MEANT to be played using an I-PAC or something similar.

Total morons. I hope it sells poorly and they just stop bothering. Let's get real: this game had no chance of being as good as MK2 anyway. 9 sequels? Give me a break.

Ok since the patch they released at around 7pm PT I am able to get my tankstick working during gameplay for player 1 & 2 but no menu control (other than up/down).

I have to have a KB linked through the tankstick PS2 connection in order to operate the menu system, if I use a USB KB everything falls apart.

Progress...

Hopefully someone on here will come up with a patch like they did on SF4. I gave up on MK9 using Ipac because now matter how I mapped buttons for gameplay, menus always wanted alternate buttons I didn't have. Could run key2joy but that messed up all the other games that were config'd perfectly.
I went on Can you run it, and the CPU specs for this game are pretty high anyway. I can run every other PC game on my cab no problems but don't even meet minimum for CPU on this game. This PC port seems poorly optimised all around, but I expected as much after MK9.

MK9 has a workaround that works great as it makes the pc think the KB emulation is an Xbox controller, the info is on the X-Arcade site and many have confirmed it works with their IPAC setups. ;)

I tried that same 'fix' right away with MK X but no luck (it does not work on Injustice either).

I run MK X great but my multi-cade pc is fairly stout compared to many (certainly not all). I run a liquid cooled quad core at 4 ghz, with an OC'd Radeon 7850 (faster than stock 7870) and 8gb ddr3.
MK X heats the system up pretty good running at max settings other than no motion blur (which I do not like anyway).

MK X currently has problems on all platforms but the pc version has the most issues at the moment. I can't complain too much as I paid less than 1/2 but it's going to be the last game that I pre-order for a while.

* I think MK3FAN was wise to do his MK X build using a PS4, mostly just online issues with that version.

Sorry I haven't done any videos of the machine. I've been busy the last 13 hours finishing up the move set bezel. It's as complete as I can make it at the current time. When the DLC characters become available and I unlock one of the hidden characters, I'll re-edit those character blocks when the time comes, but for now, it's complete. Now it's time for some game play videos. Stay tuned...

No reason to be rude.  :dunno

Well then you are one of the lucky ones, the steam MKX forum is full of people having issues with the control mapping on a huge variety of control methods (KB/Joystick/Controller/etc.).

I need to try it again since as stated it appears to have seen at least one or possibly two patches since I attempted to map my tankstick.

The bottom is part of the speaker grille. Unless I filled the holes with bondo, painting it would not look good and thus, would not match the upper part.

Cab looks great, how is the game? Is it like the last one where you play through a story? I really enjoyed that one, and the similar Injustice.

I believe the Kahn at the end is just the designation as the Ruler.  His "real name" is listed as "Ko'atal"

There is a story, but its really heavy handed in trying to make Cassie's crew be great when in fact they kinda suck. One of  the more frustrating things is to fight Baraka , but not be able to play as Baraka.
I like the overall direction of the story arc, but not the path they took to get there.

Just wanted to follow up and say that after the latest PC patch for MKX control mapping works on the X-Arcade sticks as long as you program it to the default MKX bindings.

I used Player 1 start as ENTER and Player 2 start as ESCAPE in order to navigate the menus. Numlock has to be enabled for Player 2 to function properly.

I don't know if this makes a difference for Ipac users but others have confirmed better control mapping since the latest patch on 5/6/2015.

I don't know if this makes a difference for Ipac users but others have confirmed better control mapping since the latest patch on 5/6/2015.

Actually they released 3 patches for PC within ~24 hours (May 5th & 6th).

The initial patch with many 'fixes' deleted game saves, the second patch was a rollback patch after they pulled the initial one and then the next morning they released the initial patch again minus the game save bug.

Here's the kicker... each patch was 15+ GB and there were a couple patches before those with one being 15+ GB (so the game is nearing 100 GB worth of downloading in less than a month from release).

The console versions have seen some issues but the PC version has been among the worst launches ever.

MK3FAN absolutely made the right choice by using the PS4 version for his cab.

spoiler, I have the PC version. Other than launch day not being able to play the game till 7pm, I haven't had most of the problems other people have had. Luckily steam didn't update MKX with the "patch of death" for me.

Damn - 100 GBs of patches? That's insane!

I avoided the save bug patch as well and have been able to play the game mostly fine since launch (other than the memory leak issue which will eventually cause a crash). I have about 30 hours into it so I can't complain after paying less than half price. Now it can be found for $15 so at that price it's a deal (it appears they are trying to fix as much as they can asap).

100 GB is including the game itself, which is about 30 GB.

Nah. The PC version with a G-Sync monitor is still far superior. The initial release was fine. You don't even have to connect to the internet, so you wouldn't have got any of the patches anyway.

I've been watching this build since day one, and I am in love! It looks great! I am a big Injustice Fan as well, and love the looks of your cabinets! Pro stuff right here!

Thanks!

Im starting to fall in love with your elitist attitude :*

You are correct, you dont have to connect to the internet........ unless you wanna play the faction war META game, do the living towers, and or fight other people online.

While I agree the pc version is over-all superior... with all of the various pc issues out of the gate the PS4 version was 100% the right choice for a dedicated arcade cabinet where stability is important.

Remember that just because you or I run the game mostly fine (and have since launch) not everyone is having the same luck. ;)

Mike,

First off, kick ass cabinet and kollection!

I am curious about your button layout on this.  I actually prefer the same standard old school MK layout that you have used here with the block in the middle and the run under the thumb.  This causes a shortage of buttons though as well as a couple of other issues. I recently built a fight stick for MKX and used the exact same layout, but I am having some issue mapping all of the buttons because of the lack of one.  Basically you have to pick either level interaction or throw for your thumb, one or the other.  Is there another way you have found to get around this?  I know there  are a few shortcuts, like block+3+4 to initiate an xray.

Thanks for the kind words. Since I'm using a PS4, the buttons are mapped by default for square + triangle = interaction, square + X = Throw (or L1 = throw), and X + R2 (Block) + circle = XRay. I don't have any issues with any of the inputs.

MK3FAN could help me with a chart or more photos of the mod hack you used to the controls of your arcade ps4

So how bad was it, really, on the CRT?  I'm ok with doing an LCD in my Killer Instinct 3 cabinet but if a CRT can be done that might be fun.

It was pretty good actually, but it's MUCH better in the correct aspect ratio and HD.

I don't have the machine anymore, but this might help. Just make sure to scrape off the coating on the pads and use a low-heat iron because you can damage the pads/traces with too much heat. Also, make sure to use some flux so your solder will stick to the pads easier. Don't forget about the 8kohm resistors you'll need as well. If you have any further questions, let me know...

In going to the Xbox One menu and re-selecting HDMI a new resolution popped up - 640x480! I selected it just for kicks to see how it would look.  Needless to say most text on the system was basically unreadable at that resolution.  Killer Instinct looked ok but all in all I'm still going for LCD on this build.

It's a shame to hear you got rid of the MKX.  What are you working on these days?

I sold the MKX, MK9 and IGAU machines for $7500 to a collector in Michigan. Only custom cab I have left is my 'dedicated' multi-Street Fighter. Not working on anything at the moment. Just finished an NFL Blitz '99 and Q*Bert restorations.

I was the only one that played them. No lie. Not once, the entire time I had them, did any one play them but me. None of my friends are gamers and after a while, I realized that I wasn't as good at them as I am the original MKs, so I sold them to someone who could provide them with more appreciation than I could.

I think that's the one thing I can more then relate to cause I know as you get older, everyone tends to drift off as far as interests and shared hobbies are concerned.  Where I live there's supposed to have been a fight club and that somehow disintegrated the moment Keits moved down to Chicago for that silly Divekick game of his.  Some people are still trying to rekindle a bit of interest.

Well keep us posted on what your next projects are.  If you ever want to make another MK for yourself, I might have a fun idea or two.

Marquee and bezel plexiglass retainers should be white.

Hello, my name is Sean. I am an avid pin collector and Mortal Kombat fan. I saw this post and just loved what you did. Congrats. On to the purpose of this post.

I would like to commission you to make a Mortal Kombat 11 Arcade cabinet for me. You did such a fantastic job on the MKx one that you were the only one I knew to ask. I would love to talk to you about this, if possible. I would like Xbox one or ps4 pro, 2 player, 4k monitor and true mk arrangement on the buttons. I would pay for the parts and whatever agreed upon labor fees for creation.

I hope you actually see this.
Thanks!

-Sean

If MK3FAN is unavailable holler at me and I can get you squared away, in the process of building an mk11 cab as we speak.

It was suppose to be done by March 22nd, but the stinking beta dropped one week after the showcase.   43" 4k + 29" living marquee , xboxone x etc.

You won't need controllers unless you want to just want to hack, but there is a board that makes it easier.  The preferred method is a brooks fighting board.

My man is the originator, but not the only MK fan out there :)
