I'll give everyone a baseline to beat.  I've never played this before since it was made before I was born, but man it's addicting

Oh and I just had to have a bud while playing...that should be in the rules

Anyone care to talk strategy or is it every man for himself?

I played a few games the other night.  Normally, I'd just try to clear boards as fast as possible.
In the name of trying to get a higher score, I tried some different things.

On the first board, if you let the guy at the bottom bar get fairly far before you send him a beer, he doesn't leave and people will keep coming in the other doors.  This allows you to score more points on the first board, but the pace will pick up eventually.

Not sure if this strategy is best or not, but exploiting little things like that is how the pros seem to work.

EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF!

I debated using that strategy, but it sounds like things get crazy almost as fast as just clearing the stage normally.

One strategy I've been found when things get more chaotic is to just focus on two bars until they are essentially cleared.  Then focus on the other two bars.  And go back and forth doing this.  This helps to catch the mugs being passed back as you only have to move up or down once.

ARGH!!! I'm so frustrated with this game:

1.) The fat football player looking guy can surely put 'em away
2.) What a-hole leaves tips down the far end of the table?
3.) Clearly there are a lot of stolen mugs because the return rate on them is about 20% :)
4.) If you're going to be ignorant and turn around, at least take your beer first.

I'll give this one a crack (",)  Gauntlet wasn't really my thing...

Edit: damn, I can't get it to work on my mame cabs version 78 mame. Tried three different sized rom sets! I'm gonna have to put version 34 on there just to play it!

edit: cant even make v34 work on my cab. more luck with v53, but still no Tapper. Is there something special about setting up Tapper? I'm sure I used to play it on my cab. If I can't figure it out, ill have to compete using my GP2X!

DOH! disabled direct draw and it works, just have to find the most useful resolution but at least its now playable on my cab (",)

Ha ha, 108,850!!!

That is my highest score ever, but I know I can do better.  I never really played for score before, I always tried to get past the space bar levels.  (but was disheartened when I looked it up online and found out that those were the last levels, they just repeat.)

I think it's worth milking the first two boards a bit. It's the difference between four and at least eight or ten thousand.
Title: Re: High Score Competition #54 - Tapper (Budweiser)
Post by: jasonbar on October 25, 2010, 04:40:34 pm
Yah, it's definitely worth milking the first few levels.  I've been doing that.  Unfortunately, if you milk them for too long, then you sometimes find yourself overwhelmed & can't finish the levels.

On the western saloon (first levels), I keep the top 3 bars clear by serving beers to those patrons as soon as they appear.  I keep milking the bottom bar as much as possible, so I can focus on just that 1 bar.

Patrons reappear in the order in which you served them.  So, if you go top to bottom with serving beers to patrons (early enough to scoot them out the door), then they'll reappear in that same order.  It makes it easy to keep track of them if you're organized.

My biggest problem is picking up a tip & then instantly serving a beer, without waiting to see if the patron turned around to watch the dancing girls.

Oh, and picking up tips is big points, but it totally messes up my organization method described above for milking, since some patrons watch the show & some don't.  Everything gets out of sync & messy when I pick up a tip on a higher level (stadium).

My 2nd biggest problem is tapping up or down to move & assuming the game registered the move but didn't, & I find myself serving a beer to nobody...

I'm well into the punk levels & got 80k+ so far for my best.

Thanks,
-Jason

Ya, I got my score by milking the first few levels, and then playing the rest straight up.  The tips rack up big points, and apparently to score per beer goes up A LOt as levels progress,  I got my last 40,000 points or so on the level that I did not get past.

I'll try again tonight...

Hah, I recently took out the 'parentheses' in the game lists in my FE and accidentally started with Rootbeer Tapper. The brew sure looked weird at first. And some of the game music sounded different. Oh.

Anyone have troubles with the shell game?

Here's a first run after finishing the first two boards with about 12k. Overall, a decent score for me.

Sports: 75
Punk: 100

Just kept getting shy of 50K last night. I'm currently working on my cp so I have to play with my xbox360 controller. This turned out to be ok because I made the right analog stick the tap pourer.  Feels more like the real game that way. I tend to milk the first to levels too long and things get out of control before I know it.

Question about the savestate rule.

So I have the -savestate switch on my hyperspin front end so High Scores will stay saved in all the games I play. Do I have to turn that off to make it count?
Title: Re: High Score Competition #54 - Tapper (Budweiser)
Post by: CapriRS302 on October 27, 2010, 12:32:36 pm
I'm pretty sure what they mean is that you can't use a savestate to help your progress, like getting 50,000 points without dying, saving the game, and just restarting from there everytime until you get a better score...

This is one of the games I loved playing on my old Tandy 1000 growing up.  Still need to get to work on my cabinet.  I have all the joysticks, buttons sitting in a box tempting me and just had to give this game a try.  Had my best game so far, but still short of the top score.  Still have a little more time...The 3rd level is getting me, hopefully I'll get it figured out.

Well, I've gotten to the point where I can consistently get 50k +. Rarely get to the punk bar level. My best so far, and I've got a damn sore wrist too so that might be it for me...

Oh, and i've been milking the first 3 levels too. On the first, to get to 4000 or so faster, I keep two of them 'alive'. You get twice as many points for an empty mug as you do for getting rid of a patron, so the points rack up faster. This is why the scores really seem to ramp up in later levels- same points structure, but a gazillion empty beer mugs to try and catch!

I don't remember getting an extra man at 120,000. It's at 20K and then every 60k. So 20K, 80k, 140K...

BTW, if you win or stay in 2nd to my score, you get to pick the new game and start the new thread. So start thinking of a game to play.

I don't know how you got 127,000 on level 6.  You must have a gimmick or something that I don't know about.  I got all the way to the alien bar and ended up with 119,000.

Will try again tomorrow!

I did, but it wasn't a high score so I didn't post it.

Also, the levels are immensely harder, so for our score range it is almost easier to milk the biker bar...

I milked the early levels as much as I could, but I was surprised that I only got to level 6. I've been trying to improve that score today because I'm expecting you to beat it. But I could only get to 121,000. I think I'm done. I enjoyed the competition, so good luck.

Well, in that case (I was going to stay up until 1:59 to post this) here goes...

169,650!!!!!

I was on fire, and that was with me losing a life on stage two (while trying to milk it for all it was worth)

You have 5 hours, 33 minutes.

Good Luck!

I give up--can't beat my score already posted--I'm just getting worse, the more I try to point press...

Great game, but I can't compete.

Hey congrats!  This was a fun competition to watch.  :-)

So what's next?  How about DKII?  Been hearing a lot about that one lately.  Why not?

Because I don't have it, & I bet many many other people don't have it, since it's a "new" game that "costs money".

Ahh, I believe quarterstringer said the winner gets to choose... :applaud:

And does anyone know how to setup MAME to record a game?  I would like to try again and get a recording to send in to twin galaxies, just to prove how much of a dork I am.

Isn't it supported in the new MAME .140?

But if not that, how about something similar like Donkey Kong Foundry?

I read somewhere that DK2 is supported in .140, but isn't it still a product that's being sold right now, so it's generally not considered to be kosher to copy.

I'm still using 115 for 99% of my games...I don't have time to upgrade & set up new revs...   :(

Never tried it myself.

Which means you can take an INP of it. Very easy, and very reliable. The only thing that can get trying is having to exit and re-enter MAME if you (continually) screw up and want to re-start.

Okay, my mind is made up, and let me say that I had two games in mind.  One was a pac-man game on the "Namco Classics II" rom that I had never saw before MAME.  It is 3D'ish has a bunch of cool power ups and warps, is a lot of fun to play, AND you can play two players simultaneously.  The problem is that you can keep popping in quarters and continue with the same score, so I gave it the axe.

Then after much soul searching, and thinking back to my childhood favorites, I double checked the list of games already played and came up with.....

wait for it.......

wait for it.........................

Paperboy!

don't you need a specialized controller for that?

Like a yoke with a throttle?

I've gotten it to be playable with an analog joystick but man is it tough (up and down for throttle and left and right for steering)

I believe it works just fine with your regular joystick, in fact I never saw a paperboy machine with that controller, the ones I played all had regular joysticks...

But if people want a different game, I won't be offended... :badmood:  (as long as you try the pac-man game, you would never know it was there, and it is pretty cool playing two people at the same time)

It won't work "just fine with a joystick" unless you have an analog joystick. The speed at which you move forward is full speed with a regular joystick (ie: too fast). That said, it's just extra challenge, but anyone playing with the right controller will have a huge advantage.

Just played 1 game (on 115).

Got 17,658 on Easy Level, using my analog stick.  Great game.  Got through a few levels.  Just not the same w/out the bike handlebars, though...

Granted my analog stick is on the left side of my cab, & I'm right-handed, & I have a big 27" monitor, so it's a pretty awkward setup...(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff97/infernolab/Arcade%20Game/05cabinetToweringInfernopics.jpg (http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff97/infernolab/Arcade%20Game/05cabinetToweringInfernopics.jpg))

I respectfully request a different game, though I'll play Paperboy if you want it.

Tahnks,

Great game gem!  I need to add this to my new vertical game lineup since it will have two 4/8 way joys.  However, when I continued in the game it reset my score.  Although it did start at the same level I was just on.

CapriRS,

Since you won Tapper, you get the honors of starting the new thread. You can pick the pacman game because the rules state that only one quarter or credit is allowed.

Hey Capri, if you don't know how to make the thread, take a look at the first post in this thread. Hit the quote button and copy the entire post to your clipboard. Make a new thread, paste the quoted text in, and edit it for your game.

Let's get it started!

PS Congrats by the way... I was only able to get 45k or so  :(

This is not true. I use a digital stick for speed just fine. MAME will keep it at whatever pace you were at before the stick returned to center. It's the maneuvering that I think needs at least a spinner for. And I have one, so....
