Title: Would like to start a page for Good venders, links and reviews
Post by: MYX on June 20, 2006, 05:52:15 pm
There are several places that I have had great service as well as great products. I would like to start a WIKI for these folks.
MAMEMarquees, Arcadeshop, GGG etc.
I would probably probably have to dog on Happs but again it would be reviews.

would this be aaaaight wit you folkz?

Great page: short, but very good destription. This is what I love!

I hope it ok, since I added some another reviews, along with yours (so because of this, I'm just added your tag).

hmm, The Real Bob Roberts got a 11 in rating, maybe it should been 10? No one can ever got a 11 in rating, if you used from 1-10 table! But I dosen

Fractal,
BTW of course it is ok to add entries. That is why it is there, so feel free to add any info about anyone who you have had dealings with.

I made some changes.

So long as the wiki reflects that reviews are the sole opinion of the reviewer, I'm fine with that. I would be highly opposed to Bob getting an 11 if it was an "official" rating.

IMO a "10" vendor would carry everything, have great prices, have reasonable shipping cost, and would take credit cards and PayPal.

Alright. I will step back on this. I like how you added the reviewed by... What would you say to me zeroing out the 11 and I will change it back to 9.8 this way we wont confuse others that come in later. Also without having to go in and re format the page for every person that submits a review, cen we empliment a template for the review?

Name, rating, comments.

Nahh, keep the 11 if you want. "Mine goes to 11" is always funny.

Hopefully SF will improve the way the review process works. It's currently a bit cumbersome to add reviews. I lack his expertise on that side of things.

EXACTLY!!! Why not just 10...
Great movie!!!

Should I correct the post. Currently it shows Fractal as putting the 11 not me?

BTW, Fear of a Black Hat is a great side step from Spinal Tap. It is kind of a rap version. I am not much into rap, but it is nearly as funny.

Remember, templates are key. Learn how to use them and provide them early. Having a miss-mash of pages dedicated to the same upper-level topic will make it that much harder down the road to clean up.

Wikipedia has a slew of templates for messages and other components. I suggest looking at them and pulling out what you think might work (e.g. steal the idea... that what it's there for... ) See this link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Template_messages)

My suggestion would be to use info-boxes for these reviews (and for other upper-level topics such as examples). Again, Wikipedia has a bunch of them listed here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Esoteric_templates)

No I didden't gave it 11, and diddent change it, because it was not my review, just commented it.

It was funny too.

If you guys are cool with it, I will work on a template today and put it up tonight for your review. If you like it, I will change the reviews that exsist currently (as there are not too many) then, I will put up a note to future users to please use the template. BTW I will put user instructions within the template so there is no guess work left to them.

I would like a template that displays all user reviews for a given vendor, and has a button for "Add a Review" which then automatically updates the page.

Is that doable in a wiki?

Title: Re: Would like to start a page for Good venders, links and reviews
Post by: Space Fractal on June 27, 2006, 09:17:52 am
I mean you cant update automatic, like you would done in php. Instead a "back to review" & "Back to vendors" could been added in the same line. I made one in the happcontrols to test....
Title: Re: Would like to start a page for Good venders, links and reviews
Post by: MYX on June 27, 2006, 10:06:10 am
I do think that all reviews for a single vender should be under that vender instead of many pages for the same vendor. I do not know about a button option. That is higher math.

I was reading about templates this morning shouldn't be too hard.

Not as you described. Wiki lets you edit the reviews, but anybody could change the posted review as they wish (thus you get a bad review, someone could modify the review).

My suggestion would be to have a link back to a topic in the forum for that page. We don't expire topics or articles, so it should be viable for the life of the Wiki. Also, users that post in the thread could only change their individual post, thus you couldn't inject changes to a review.

If you really wanted to get funky, a bot could be made that looks at that topic in the forum (that also has a pole on the ranking for the user 1-10) and updates the wiki page. I'm not opposed to hosting the bots, but I just don't have a lot of time at the moment to write them. There is an API and instruction sheet out there if anybody is interested.
Title: Re: Would like to start a page for Good venders, links and reviews
Post by: Space Fractal on June 27, 2006, 12:02:13 pm
But they can look in the histoiry, if somebody have edited a post. I also guess we are have respect to not to edit other user reviews, like the talk pages....

I have layoutet the review part into a gray table, and used the both vendors and review back links. Vendors, that only have the rating page should also been added in the vendor part at last.

Title: Re: Would like to start a page for Good venders, links and reviews
Post by: sirwoogie on June 27, 2006, 12:39:21 pm
Well, the Wiki concept is not really designed for user reviews. I do understand that history can be looked at, but who is going to police that? With using the forum, the ability to change is not provided, thus implied viability.
Title: Re: Would like to start a page for Good venders, links and reviews
Post by: MYX on June 27, 2006, 01:19:58 pm
I have added a link to the BYOAC discussion about Mame Marquees as it was a discussion that I knew of and had started some time back. I think that it gives insight to the reader as the thread sometimes turns into full discussions and good info can be obtained from it.

I think that at some point we have to hope that if someone is going as far as getting an account and going in to edit, that they are there for the right purposes. I know that there are always bad apples, but it seems that so far we are all in this hobby trying to better it and make it shine. The danger would exsist for the rest of the wiki as well if jim jerkoff wanted to goof up pages. I think that there should be a penalty for malicious activity on the wiki. Perhaps... banned from BYOAC all together.

Yes, good post MYX.

Other thing could, if the review or some thing, that should been locked, could hold in a IFRAME. The Contect of the IFRAME could been a simple php guestbook, that can hold comment of this vendor (rather that review).

Buddaking have updated the rating system with a more fair way, so it would been good, if you used the same rating system. otherwice I would NOT update, since it your review.

I actually did this earlier today. I liked his version as it makes more sense. How does one get a 9.8 or 9.9, there was no basis except fot random numbers pulled out of the head. I thought that these guys all were in the 9s. I will update My previous reviews soon.

It a great template.

I have dod fixed some very few issues:

- The rating back link diddent align correct (80%+80% was 160%, but should been 100%, why you saw the scrollbar in the buttom.

- I also added a <br style="clear:both;"/> tag at the button, so the next table review table dosen

The only place it goes off the screen is in the copy box. It is because there is a nowiki tag in there. The table info line cannot be broken or the table does not work correctly (A problem I encountered while trying to build it).

Please do not modify it. There are several things in there that are there for a reason. If something needs to be fixed, please let me do it.

As to the <br> tag. I use it when necessary. I use it as a spacer for vertical spacing between sections. Or is a list. I started using ; and : to for the indents. No need to add them there. Also with number lists, no need for <br> there either.

The 80 that you changed was a pixel rating not a percentage.

It was when U saw the example, without <nowiki> bug.

You cant doing anything because in the copy&paste table, i know. But there was still some issues, I have fixed, when I saw the example below that. And  Outerwice the scrollbar would been muched when a copy & paste found place.

About 80% was that problem. The other 80% (ONLY the back link) should only have 20%, and not 80%, because you alleraedy used a 80% width in the comment table. This is why you have a long long horz scrollbar.
Title: Re: Would like to start a page for Good venders, links and reviews
Post by: Space Fractal on June 29, 2006, 08:50:35 am
This is why I fixed them (but liked it). It totally muched up, so I fix that, so it work fine. Look the widly scrollbar than at button. It sible the whole table is not 100% but about 160%. This should never been used in a homepage. A screenwidth is allways 100%

Internet Explorer 6.

Your problem is simple, your total table is over 100% and that messed that.

Why did you reverted back. The same problem is also on the other template.

You should NEVER have a total table length in 100% (your was 160%)!

Wich brower did you use?

BTW, comments is obviously a large row once filled with comments. The comments word in the side header floats in the middle. What can I insert on the line or on the table so that it is level with the first line of the comments?

Firefox.
I reverted it back because you also had mistakes and I had half a table shoved to the far right side of the screen. I think it had something to do with mixing the <br> with the </style>.
Please lets discuss it here. I do not mind adding the tags and fixing the 160 issue, but please lets discuss it here and I will fix it. This is as much as a learning thing for me as anything else. I want to make it the best as possible, so I am taking your advice, I would just like to empliment it.

Hey Space Fractal, I have to run to work. I will catch up with you a little bit later.

See you  :D. Hope you can fix it, because it looked fine in my Firefox, so you may use a older version of Firefox? So I would NOT revert again.

I really love your table, should just have seen in Firefox first! Good work (80% is a GOOD width)!

It was a silly one tag missed: You forgot to add  <br style="clear:both;"/> between tables. Now it works as you would have it. I do not know it a error in IE or FF.

Looks good. Thanks. Sorry, I just went in this morning and knew it looked last night and when I looked at it this morning it was all squished like a table got broke. That is why I reverted back. I just looked with both IE and FF on a mac (office e-mail machine) and will check tonight when I get home. (pc)

I had put several spaces between the top of the template and where the user would start to input his or her data. I did it so it would be easy to see where to start.

any thoughts?

Sorry, I probably have too many balls in the air. 3 simultanious edits at work, trying to learn wiki, trying to build my cab... I wish there was a spell check in the wiki. I will try to check the stuff before I submit more stuff. Yes, if you see a mis spelling or typo, please do. I would not police it to hunt for errors, you have enough to do.

Space Fractal, what does the <br style="clear:both;"/> do. I did not see this in the stuff I was reading.
I have not seen a command with the / at the end of the tag.

It breakout tables and images, so it dosent align to the right. When you use this tag, it breaked completly out and start a new line.

It was rarly used in the software section (so the images dosent ---fudgesicle--- up). Use allways that tag for making new tables

Spelling and grammer should ALLways corrected, so it ok to correct this type of error, even it on other review.

I think the ArcadeShop Amusements now look very good. Only problem is I can

Bob Roberts shouldn't get a 10 because he doesn't accept Paypal and Credit Cards, which makes it virtualy impossible to order from outside of the US.
And he sells the Chinese Wico fakes which are junk (even the junk leaf switches that are used in those joysticks are available seperatly. Someone with the experience of Bob should know better.

I'm sure Bob is a great guy, has fantastic stuff on stock and great service. His information on his site is great and I deeply respect that he goes on after his retirement. But please, be a little bit more open to international buyers if you want that 11.

I'm sure I will get flamed for this, but this is my opinion.

By the way, I've added some info about Suzo not all the original info is correct about them.
Also added Zanen Electronics (with e-mail address !) and TNT Amusements.

Hope I kept to the standards...

Isn't that the entire point of the review process ?

The user tells of their own experiences with a vendor. It isn't up to ME to anticipate YOUR difficulties with a particular vendor when reviewing MY experience.

As for those sticks, he was deluged with requests for a leaf stick and eventually gave in (he even says that in his item description, IIRC).

He is an 11 for me and I am outside of the US.

Cheers.

I added Divemaster127 to the vendors list.  Also, I created a review for Divemaster127 and Ponyboy.  I'll do a few more reviews later.  I hope I didn't mess anything up.  Please feel free to change anything that I didn't do right.

One thing that has been bugging me about the Wiki for a while now is there is no sound section.  We give no info on stuff like hooking a computer to car speakers or anything involving sound.  If I had the time I would immediately learn Wiki and get to work on a sound section, but unfortunately I don't and would like to see something on it.

The Wiki looks awesome guys!  I haven't looked at the Wiki for several months.  Keep up the great work!

Good point. I am knee deep in a project right now. When I am done I will have more time to devote to the Wiki. When I built my cab I did use an audio amp with car speakers run off an aux PC power supply. It would make a great set o pix for the tutorial. I'll put it on my mountain of stuff to get done. :0)
