Hey,
I have a basic question for most of you guys. I'm new to the gaming / cocktail cab building.
My question is, if you have a 60-1 JAMMA card, does that mean you don't need a computer, or is the JAMMA card simply a card that has the games on it? If that's the case, could you just load rom games on a hard drive instead of using the JAMMA 60-1 card since you would have to have a computer anyway??? Not sure. Can someone clarify??
Regards,
John

Those boards are ready to go. They don't need a computer and there is no way to add games to them.
-
So you would either buy one of these boards or use a computer and load ROMS on a HDD which has the advantage of being able to swap / add / change games, correct? You would still need a power supply if you go with the JAMMA card right?
-
Yep, pretty much.
The advantage of the X-in-1 boards though is that they are pretty much idiot proof. If you are building a machine for yourself, use a computer. If you are gonna sell a cabinet, go with the x-in-1. Support will be soooo much easier.

Cool thanks Slippyblade.
Any good cocktail cabinet plans around? and sites I that might help me with the building also?
I built a full size jukebox about 10 years ago with the help of this site, I even sold one as well. It turned out awesome (so everyone thinks anyway hehe). Cocktail cabs can't be that hard to setup right?

The JAMMA standard was invented in 1985; any game older than this will not be JAMMA. JAMMA (Japan Arcade Machine Manufacturers' Association) is a standard 56-way connector used on many arcade boards to simplify conversion of cabinets from one game to another. The majority of newer games use a subset of this pinout. Some games (i.e., Street Fighter) which need extra buttons have extra connectors for these additional controls. The JAMMA connector has a .156" pin spacing edge connector (male on the game board).
it is your interface, controls, coin door, service, test, monitor interface
your board is a 60 in 1 game board
do not confuse the 2 if u wire to jamma? then any jamma board will plug right in..
and yes u will need a power supply
+12 and +5 is common supply rail's and of course ground

Holland computers has an AWESOME price on a complete kit with buttons, joystick, jamma harness, power supply, and jamma board.
I don't work for them, and I've yet to place an order, but that's where my parts are coming from!

Thanks Sarver,
Hey does anyone know if you can get the original "Donkey Kong" on a JAMMA card? Not donkey kong country, Donkey kong which is the first one. Or was that pre JAMMA?
Sorry if stupid questions

There are adapters to convert the original pcbs to Jamma wiring pinout for about $40

ya thats the best bang for the buck..
also look into 39-1 boards

Great thanks guys.
Now where would I find the original PCB's?
-
What board do you want specifically? I might be able to come up with something that is ORIGINAL.
-
I would really like the original donkey kong. It would be a bonus if this was incorporated into a JAMMA card but from what you guys have said, I take that as a no. I want the pacman, galaga and most games the 60 in 1 JAMMA card has; it would just top it off if I could have the original donkey kong on it also.
-
Wait.... my drugs have just worn out hehe. It seems the 60 in 1 cards do have the original Donkey Kong!!

I thought I saw somewhere it was donkey kong country.

60-in-1 has several DK variants, none of which are DK Country.
Donkey Kong Junior, Donkey Kong 3, Donkey Kong
DK Country is a console game. I've never seen console games on jamma boards before.
I've seen Crazy Kong before, so maybe that's what you were thinking?
-
Maybe you're right.
Thanks for the clarification guys

Hi guys, I'm new here and considering doing the 60-in-1 Jamma board, but i would like fluid play. Is Ms. Pacman motion fluid or does it skip? i saw a few videos on Youtube where it appeared to be a little jerky / skippy, so wanted to know if it was the video compression or if gameplay isnt completely fluid. I dont mind the occasional hiccup especially given how cheap Jamma boards are and the relative bullet- and idiot proof they are, but if performance is laggy, its got to get annoying. your insight is appreciated.
-
Well srs I haven't noticed any lag or anything like that at all. We've played most of the games on the 60 in 1 (especially galaga hehe) and I have not noticed any lagging. People here have mentioned that the sound is not the best on some games on the 60 in 1 but I haven't noticed anything there either. All in all I'm really happy with it.
Hope it helps
John

I'll second that. No skipping or jerkyness noticed during game play on a 60 in 1. Sound is not the best on some games but that is another issue.

I recently picked up a cheap beat to crap super pac-man that was complete. After about 2 weeks of playing super pac I got a little bored but figured the cab would make for a great multi-pac since it has 4way 1button. I ordered a 60in1 purely out of curiosity (never played or saw one before) and constructed a jamma to super pac-man adapter. After whittling down the game list to 18 games (just the midway/namco stuff that goes with the cab style), I gotta say it's not a bad little board. It's cool having the slow and fast versions of all the pac games. I've always read that people talk about "input lag", well they must be idiots using a zippy stick with a bad lcd monitor. With a cga monitor and a REAL midway pac-man 4 way leaf joystick and playing the sped up version of ms. pac-man I see/feel absolutely zero lag. With getting to know super pac-man really well for the last 2 weeks on dedicated hardware and playing it on the 60in1 feels the same to me. After watching some videos I was a little concerned at the beeping in the menu selection screen. Not sure if mine has a welcomed bug or if they fixed it, but I only get the beeping when selecting the first game after boot up, after that it's silent in the menu. Makes for a great cheap well playing multi pac board and I'm pleased with it.
good day.

yeah just turn off the music

Music is off but beeping continues on his.

With a well tuned midway leaf joystick and a cga monitor ALL the "input lag" posts about the 60in1 become pointless with my video. Fun stuff.
good day.

Is CGA monitor preferable to VGA or LCD on these boards?
-
I'm running a 20" Dell LCD in a cocktail cabinet, and I absolutely love it.
-
got one on a 42" lcd with a pedestal. works just fine.
-
I have a 17" with CraftyMech's SLG and it looks great.
-
I know this is an old topic, but here is what I see with my latest build with a 60 in 1 using an old Dell LCD 17 inch monitor.
I don't notice lag on the joystick. I do notice serious lag on the Player fire buttons on games like all three Donkey Kong games. The lag is so bad that it seems to take a least a half second from button press to jump which makes the games 100% unplayable.

Most of the games are unplayable with this board and an LCD. That's just the way they are. On a dedicated Ms. Pacman I can bang out 100,000 points easy without getting killed. On a 60-in-1 with an LCD and a nice 4-way leaf joystick it's like 30,000-50,000 and then it's so frustrating I don't want to play anymore. It was so bad I sold mine. I think that the casual gamer wouldn't really notice and would probably attribute it to being out of practice. If you have a PC CRT it seems marginally better. With an arcade CRT you get the best performance but you still notice the screen tearing.

then you are a person that needs to buy a real pac man cabinet and play that then. the average joe schmo isn't going to care there is 23ms of lag. (or whatever it is)
also, 60-in-1 games aren't really "fast" enough to warrant worrying about screen tearing. you may see a small tear occasionally on a sprite as it passes the tear threshold... but again, not the joe schmo. it would be more problematic if it was full screen moving...pole position, etc.
60-in-1 - good for a guy and his buddies sitting around having some brews.
60-in-1 - not good for a nitpicky videogame purist. (who shouldn't be even considering a 60-in-1 anyways)

+1 -- you can't expect to get perfect arcade performance from a board that cost $45 and includes 60 games when an original board for 1 game costs several times that !! - For what they are the 60 in 1 boards are decent and many people that have never owned an actual arcade game never notice the difference so for the cost it is a decent option for most people.
