Title: Nes maker
Post by: thomas_surles on January 27, 2018, 10:02:04 am
Did we talk about this already? I feel like we did but i cant find it.
But anyway, check out nes maker. It looks neat. Reminds me of rpg maker.

I like the presets for genres, but im expecting it to be generic unless you know the programming language. Kinda like rpg maker is. Wothout scripts you get the same basic games.

At first glance anyway it seems pretty robust from reports I've been seeing.  It might be a good way to learn assembly as well....  outdated assembly, but still.  ;)

I'm reasonably excited about it.  If it's good enough I might take one summer and do "BYOAC:  The Game."  :)

That would have to be R rated right??

Yotsuya already did BYOAC The Game.

Yots did ZapCon: The Game.

It does have lots of BYOAC overtones, though.

I知 in negotiations to sell it to a small gaming company in Southern California.

I just watched all the tutorial videos and it looks pretty dope.
A little more difficult than rpg maker, but still easy enough to figure out. Hopefully they will get a forum together where people can contribute art, music, and scripts. That will give me a reason to get back into making 8 bit tunes.

Has anyone started making their game yet?

I've started a shmup I'm going to cut my teeth on this "engine" (can you call it that? It's more like a GUI for Assembly code), then afterwards I'm planning on building a side-scrolling Action-RPG (gameplay similar to Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, but a more sci-fi theme, and with better combat).

For my shmup, I currently got concepts for my ship and the enemies, as well as a rough gameplay design. But the shmup module hasn't been released yet, so I got some time here to get my assets created and flush out the gameplay more.

The top-down Action-RPG module has just been released this last Wednesday, and there is a cool tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wH6G296onhs&feature=youtu.be) on how to use it to make a Legend of Zelda type game.

God I forgot all about this!

I have to many other projects going on atm but be cool to see anything you guys can come out with.

I built some basic games years ago with a game maker.
Cant remember what it was called but it was really easy and fun once you got the knack for it.

Yeah I知 excited about this. I致e wanted to make an NES (or SNES) game for a while, but the idea of learning assembly code was daunting. Mind you I値l still probably need to learn it a bit, if I want to add more functionality that痴 not available in the  default modules. Currently the modules have very basic genre specific features you can access. The devs are working on adding features and fixing things as time goes on, but there is a community developing for NESMaker that have already released scripts and work-around for certain requests.

I値l be super chuffed when I get my first NES game running on actual hardware.

Knowing your skill set and background, I am excited to see what you build. I am sure it will be a difficult game.  :lol

Did you buy the whole kit, or just the software for now?

LOL difficult yes, but not punishingly difficult.  We'll see...

I just got the software for now, and will pick up the flasher and cart when I'm about ready to call the game "final". But when you purchase the software, you're allotted 2x installs on different PC under one license key.  I've got NESMaker installed on one of my old laptops that is running Win7. It's going to be my "NES development kit", which already has Famitracker for NES music generation.

For sprite work I'll by using Pro Motion  (https://www.cosmigo.com/), that I purchased a while ago when I used to do sprite work commissions on the side. Yeah, there are free sprite creators out there like GraphicsGale or D-Pixel, but I like Pro Motion because it pays direct homage to old Amiga Deluxe Paint which was an industry standard BITD for creating sprite art and it was the software I learned sprite animation on a while ago.
