I dont really wanna name it anything else, I dried up my creative juices with Mortal Kabinet lol
no real progress pix, all I did was pull out the dead 25" arcade monitor and mount the 36" Sharp TV (with component input)
KI2 cabinet, stripped of its internals:

Sharp 36" SDTV with COMPONENT input:
moved the top mounting bracket up about 5 1/2"s:
moved the bottom mounting bracket down about 5 1/2"s:
Those holes for all 8 OLD holes were plugged with plastic "chrstmas tree" plugs and look stock. No pix of those, its night time and the lighting sucks in here.
Ignore my fat belly, but heres the 36" monitor mounter VERTICALLY in the cab:

Here's inside the control panel:

The orange button turns the TV on and off.
Here's inside the Marquee area:

the monitor I was setting everything up with on the chair and the TV , both running Pac-man. You cant really tell, but I was running the standard windows VGA driver at the time, I thought it was a neat picture.

My attempt at showing how big the horizontal games look on the TV mounted vertically, in case you're wondering its the equivalent of about a 24" arcade monitor:
Here's pacman all HUGE-ified:

he's bigger then a quarter!

these are just more gratuitous pix. There are some issues, like I don't have a front end set up yet AND the bottom of the screen is too low, about an inch is out of site, which for most games is no problem, but for Donkey Kong and Galaga where you're at the bottom, its under the wooden cross beam that holds the glass.
Its not a big deal to the player, because you can look down and see it, but to anyone standing behind the player or not right next to him, they cant see it. Im going to try and Adjust the TV to move shrink the pic vertically, then move it to the top, just havent had time /wall of text.
I need to add something to block the light/act like a bezel:
pretty good lookin picture for a SDTV:
Spirit Win! lol
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=90051.0;attach=134052;image)
DONT judge by these pix, the screen is clear and very easy to read, but the Iphone is a ---smurfy--- camera.

Awesome monitor!
-
looks really nice
did you have to go in a service menu from your tv
to create a good picture over the whole screen?

nope, thats the factory defaults, I havent "tuned" the picture yet, but I plan to. I'm still trying to figure the bezel, ha!
thanks for the compliments, Im gonna try to take some more pix and maybe a video or two
-
keep them comming
I'm a ki fan
-
quick vid clip, the hardware aspect is done, I dont think Im going to be adding my much beloved 7th button or pinball buttons.
Next time I'll put the cam on a tripod or have someone else take it

Nice idea on the monitor as you still get a good horizontal display, but I bet it limited your choice of front-ends? That's frikkin' uber-Pac-man on that size screen! Do yourself a favour and don't ruin that original control panel or side-art with modifications, unless it's a bit of resto work.
Oh, but gotta say it mate, you're playing the wrong KI. The sequel is just an abomination compared to the fluidity of the first. Nice cab though.

the only thing done to the cab is the 8 extra holes in the side to move the monitor mount, they were plugged by plastic "christmastrees" and can be moved back and replugged. the CPO is staying how it is, I have an old beat up NBA Jam CP that I might butcher and put on this cab, but I think its gonna stay how it is.
As for KI1 vs KI2, I like them both, but KI1 has much better music :) I still hold onto hope that RARE releases KI3. I took the pix with KI2 cause its a KI2 cab lol. The screen when playing a horizontal game is still the equivalent of about a 24" screen so I dont lose must real estate that way. Im tryingt o figure out art files so I can fill int he black sections with instruction cards and or art or something
Right now Im working on the front end skin (MaLa) & game lists; its tedious to go through 7000 games AND I need to find an updated romset mine are a few revisions old and alot of games dont work anymore :/
I'll post up some more vids when its lookin peachier.
Anyone know if Zsnes will rotate the display so I can run it on a vert monitor? I also need to find Genesis, NES, Gameboy, etc emus that'll rotate display
-
I also like KI1 more than ki2
ki1 plays better and i'm much better on ki1 also :)
i also have an ki2 cabinet , but ki1 is the game that is always played :)
-
KI > KI2
Nuff Said
Oh, and the cabinet looks. . . dare I say. . . killer!
I like the large vertical mount, I think I want to implement something like that in the future. That looks unreal with the Pac-Man, almost too big.
-
Don't know about ZSNES having a rotate feature. As it's unlikely many emulators will have a rotate feature, what may work better is to have your graphics card set up to rotate the whole setup from the off, so Windows and everything is rotated as you need it.

Nvidia wont rotate the display unless you run at 1024x768, and the TV only runs at 800x600 sooo.....
Yeah worst case I wont run any console emulators that can't rotate, I'm really hoping that NullDC can, I'd love to put MvC2 on there. I'm through the B section of MAME; Im dreading the S section :(
I should be puttin up more pix n stuff this sunday, after my birthday hangover goes away.
-
3 months later, lol.
not much has changed with the cab, I set up almost all the game lists , still trying to find out if any other emulators will rotate the display, considering emailing the guy who makes Kgen/Fusion, see if he could do it.
Anyways, I added black vinyl to the glass to act as a bezel, then I put the old KI2 stickers on it for some "art" and to break up the black, but it does look kinda weird vertical but I like it.
heres the pix:

plenty of stoage inside! got my tub with my xbox1 and games, and my 2 dreamcasts and games, might have enough room for the PS2 tub as well. The Saturn Tubs will go on top of the cab =)

MaLa running my KI2 theme, which is just a quick edit of John's Arcade theme, the lighting sucks, I know.

Samurai Shodown 5 Special, for no real reason.

Do the stickers look weird vertical to you?
the very very top , and very very bottom are clipped by the wood, this was the best game to show that on. Nothing to really interfere with game play, but there none the less.
EDIT:yes, my high score in donkey kong is that pathetic

Thanks to Cheffo, I had to see how well punch out looked, 2 monitor outputs spanned across a 32" vertical monitor dont look too bad!

Also works pretty good with Playchoice 10:

Damn. I would love to play DoDonpachi on a big vertical monitor like that.
-
I love this idea. I think when my 20" crt finally gives up the ghost I'll have to go with a vertical mounted 32" or 42" cropped to 4x3. Very cool.
-
That would bug the hell out of my playing the horizontal games but damn that looks impressive on the vertical ones. Great Work!! :applaud:

its almost the exact same size as a 25" CRT
Ive been tryin to figure out the art files, so I could fill the black areas with instruction cards n stuff; google is letting me down , lol So far the only big let down is the lack of rotation in other emulators, like Zsnes and KGen
-
I would like to build a cab with a widescreen mounted as you did in your cabinet. I was wondering how you have progressed with frontends and emulators?
Thanks,
JD

yeah, I switched to an ATI card that supports desktop rotation at 800x600 so I'm in the process of putting some consoles on there. Right now I'm having issues with the IPAC2 that Ive had for a million years and I think its time to replace it. in the mean time, I'm redoing the MaLa skin to support 600x800 horizontally, it wasnt as easy as just rotating the FE like I thought it'd be.
-
After I build my NAOMI machine... KI is next lol
-

Did you ever figure out if NullDC can rotate? I'm building a vertical cabinet myself and I can only get some NullDC vertical games to rotate (within the game's menu only if it supports it). Would be nice to get other horizontal shooters to rotate in Null DC itself.
Thanks in advance!
D

I couldnt figure it out at least not natively. I have a script rotate the desktop for the emus, but its not always exactly perfect. If you want pix of anything running in particular, LMK

Malenko:
Have you thought about using a "display rotation" utility, such as iRotate 1.37 to rotate your display, before launching your NES, SNES, or Genesis emulators?
The utility program is free, and can be downloaded here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Video-Tweak/iRotate.shtml (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Video-Tweak/iRotate.shtml)
(A simple batch file, or script, used with the utility, may do the trick! :applaud:)

Hey Malenko,
How deep is the CP? I am just trying to get a feel for how far the players would be from the screen
-
SO AWESOME. I have a cab with a vertical 27" monitor now and I don't think I can ever play a shmup on anything else again. Your cab is the s***. And the horizontal games look good too. I would definitely rather compromise on those and have the vertical games look their best.
I think you said that your TV has component inputs. How did you connect your PC?
-
Don, its pretty deep, I can measure when I get home, but its a standard MK/MKII/MK3/NHL/NBAJam/KI/KI2 cab =D
BKD, I had it hooked up with component but that vid card died a horrible smelly electric death, replacement card doesnt have component out, so now its hooked up with SVid for now. Im might try a VGAtocomponent cable and see how that goes. The Svid doesnt look bad at all, infact you can barely see the difference between the pix above.
-
aha. When I can see the s-vid port when I look at the pic a little closer. That's what I use on my cab. Works great.
-
just wanted to mention, this cab was sold. And its being mega enjoyed by my co-worker Bobby. No I didnt sell it with any roms, heck didnt even sell it to him with the computer :p
-
Miss that big vert?
-
balls deep in pole position. After that I work on my virtual Pin....perhaps the pin playfield can double as a vert monitor for arcade games =) But yeah I do miss it a little bit. I didnt have room for the PPs unless I got rid of something, and KI2 was the one to go.
-
Thanks for the inspiration. I might try this with my next cabinet.
I squeezed a 25" tv vertical/ tate into a centipede and love it for shmups. I considered doing what you did for my second cab but ended up using the factory mounts in my Dynamo for a de-cased 27" flat glass CRT mounted horizontally.
BTW- mod that xbox1 one mentioned and try out CoinOPS 3 when it comes out later this week. "it just works"
