Title: Replacement For Trackballs (MANY colors/translucent/UV reactives)
Post by: DrewKaree on March 08, 2004, 03:06:29 am
Happened to do a search for something, and came across this site.  Not sure as far as prices go, but eh!

*edit* started searching the site after posting, and found they have OPTIONS GALORE.  Sizes of EVERY ball may not work, but they have enough options to pique your interest.  The Mountain Dew ball would look PHAT for a Matrix-colored CP if you can use that or get a size you need!

Thanks for that link. I'm thinking the dark blue ball would look pretty good on my control panel.  ;D

There's another place, but as I recall the items were pricey:

What is the difference in weight between these and regular trackballs?
Would these spin different, or would there nto be any noticable difference?

I can't imagine they would be that far off in weight.  Happ lists their replacement ball as being made of polycarbonate.  Acrylic is a similar material.  I know it is possible, but I don't think it would be like the difference, say, between steel and tungsten.

The only weights I saw listed for any of the three sources here said a 2 1/4" ball is 5.6 oz.  Knowing some folks have used 8 balls for their trackball, I checked the regulation weight of them.  It should be between 5-6 oz, so these balls seem to fall within an acceptable weight range for a replacement trackball.  I can't attest to another size, but I think it's safe to say it's about the same.

Does anyone know of any that are a milky white (like a translucent white)?  I think this "color" would be the best bet for using colored leds to color the ball differently.

You're gay!  (WHAT?!?!?  You SAID to do it!) lol

As far as the white (is semi-opaque the correct term?) t-ball, see (http://www.runriot.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/arcade/gallery/TrackballLight2.jpg)

This guy said he used a translucent ball with a "properly sized LED" (whatever size that would be, I don't know) to light it up.  I think it's pretty good!  A semi-opaque ball may require more/larger lights than would be "reasonable".

Hey, tell me if you think this would look totally GHE-TOE or not....combining all of the non-standard ideas for a trackball into one:  Using a translucent 8 ball (sorry, only pic was this 12-ball) such as this:

along with an LED or cold cathode underneath to light it up.....Phat or fat?

(is semi-opaque the correct term?)

Transparent- you can see through it.

Translucent- light can get through, but you can't see through it.

Opaque- You can't see through it, no light can get through.

I thik "semi-opaque" would be like saying semi-black. It's either black or it isn't.  ;)

Thanks for the correction on the opaqueness factor.

I like the "semi-black" thing; made me laugh as I thought to myself, I would said "kinda pregnant"!

What about the lit-up TRANSPARENT 8 ball idea?  The more I look at it, the more like @$$ it looks.  Just another good idea taken a step too far. Meh.

Reminds me of all the times I've hears some of my not so smart aquaintances say that they or their girlfriends were "almost preagnant".  Every time I hear that I go nuts!  I don't understand what makes these people think they can be almost of something that has a definite answer of yes or no.

They're analog people. You're digital.
