If the thing has a time lapse feature, you should attach it your cat's collar. I saw something where someone modified a digital camera to take a pic every few minutes or so. There is a totally secret life that outdoor cats live. Either that, or kidnap a squirrel and see what they do all day.

I saw this aswell and i got a small usb sized stick thats the same as this keyvhain camera (altho i think this camera has better quality altho ive only tested my cam in poorly lit places)
Just to do the cat cam :)

Didn't workout tho as the cats hair got in the way then my sister took the cat to her new house so i never got to test it properly.

But here are the photos from the original cat cam
http://www.mr-lee-catcam.de/pe_cc_u.htm (http://www.mr-lee-catcam.de/pe_cc_u.htm)

I wish i could do this with the little video cam i have but i got no cat now :(

Ahh, so you could modify it to take a pic at a set time (using some simple extra stuff) and have it be a cute cat cam! Just whatever you do, don't turn it into a penis-cam! Last thing you need is for your mum to die of embarasment!

Yeah it's cause silent film isn't covered under the particular federal law but some states don't allow this where other states do aslong as 1 party consents aka if ur recording it then it's legal.

This is my limited knowledge on the subject from the American system.

Cool looking gadget that. Just bought 2. Figure I'll stick one to the bottom of my remote helicopter and take a closer look at the roof. Then if I crash and damage the camera (more than likely) I have a spare.

Probably a rechargeable one that recharges via the USB port.  I've recently gotten several do-dads that do exactly that.

I wonder how this one would do?  It's cheap enough.

So how hard would it be to rig one of these to a motion detector and a timer so that it recorded for, say, 5 minutes every time it detected someone... er.... opening a door?

Yes they record sound. Yes the camera is "pinhole" style, so it should see through a vent if placed close enough to the opening.

Haruman, why is PBJ's desire to use it for security a bad thing?

That's exactly what I was hoping for.

A couple jobs ago, one of my coworkers had someone getting on one of the lab computers after he left for the day, surfing 'inappropriate' websites.  For fun, he setup a webcam and some software that detected motion and then started recording just like you described.  He also captured the surf history, etc.  Sure enough he forwards me the videos of some cleaning crew dude with a vacuum on his back getting on the computer and searching for things like 'paladas vaginas'.   :laugh2:  The intense look on his face as he viewed the pages was so damn funny.
I've also had stuff disappear from my desk at work many times.  Would be nice to bust someone with a motion detecting cam like that.

You want something like this camera:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.32022 (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.32022)

It works by single presses of the power button & record button. Also you can run it in sound trigger mode, a 60db sound will trigger the record mode. The keychain one needs the power button held down to power on & the record button needs to be pressed for 3 sec before video starts recording.

The two cameras I ordered last week arrived in Aus today. They work pretty damn well. For anyone wandering about file sizes the stills I've taken range from 200KB - 300KB and the video is about 12MB for 10s, 21MB for 20s, 273MB for 3m11s. Looks like you should be able to get 10minutes footage on a 1GB MicroSD card.
Will try hooking it up to my helicopter this afternoon after work. If I can get a decent video I'll post it here.

Ordered one on the 14th and got it today. Overall, pretty happy with it.

My video quality doesn't seem to be quite as good as the ones featured in this thread, but I've only tested it indoors, so I'm not sure if it's just a low-light issue or not. Colors seem a little oversaturated.

Got mine today. I think I'm charging it right now. I'm not sure if it is chargning :dunno  I LOVE the engrish that came with this thing. I didn't realize all the extra uses this thing had:

"It has small contour design, which does UV spray finishing for the whole body." - No more need for sun block!

"When you charge it, green light and red light will bright simultaneously, of which states are stillness." - It helps you with your meditation! (btw, all I see is one orange light ???)

"Notice: when battery power is not enough, K808 will enter into protection mode, so it cannot be turn on. Now, please charge for it." - Sounds like my ex!

I did some searching and found this huge honkin thread about this camera.
Looks like you can install a webcam driver for it on this page

EDIT: It appears this driver is not needed unless you want to use it as a web cam.
FOund alot more info here: http://www.chucklohr.com/808/ (http://www.chucklohr.com/808/)

Mine are still charging and I don't have any micro sd's here at work with me, so I won't be able to test until this evening.

Only downside I've spotted so far is that I took it out of my pocket today (after charging it on Friday) to discover it totally battery-dead.

Not sure if I hit the on-button at some point, or if it just runs down on its own, but it means it's not so hot for keeping on your keychain until the moment you need a camera.

Still, I'm sure I can use it in other ways.

Got mine in, tested it. As advertised in this thread (I think?), its not so good inside but outside it's works pretty well. I put in an 8gig Micro SD so I have a nice usb memory stick that can do a bit more.

Looking into buying a used park flyer so I can tape it on and give it a whirl.
Title: Re: My $13 ebay keychain camera.

just an fyi, I set mine down to record to see how long it would last. 20 mins on a 2gb card.
Supposedly the battery lasts an hour, but I don't have an 8gb card to test that out.

I've actually been using one of mine alot at work. Keeping audio notes on it. (hard to describe, but I get measurements off of vehicles, and I can speak them faster than writing them down). It also helps to be able to snap some quickie reference photos while Im at it.

A) the camera is down to $11.86 (including shipping) if anyone is looking to get one; I ordered a second one.
B) I picked up a used park RC flyer, the Hobbyzone aerobird challenger, so hopefully next week, after some practice and the wind dies down, I'll be able to fly the camera up for a "look" see.

I have zero expectations on the Aerobird challenger, I know these can be hard to control but it's a start and it didn't break my wallet at all (paid half-price for a slightly used flyer with a spare battery and a A/C charger).

Ok, first things first:

- I taped my camera to my aerobird challenger park flyer
- I flew my flyer
- er, I mean I flew my flyer in a heavy wind day, when I knew I wasn't supposed to
- The moment it took off, it went way left, I said "ah CRAP" (I guess my worse case scenario was that it would just fall down quickly. Oops!)
- So... I crashed my flyer
- The camera hit first, right against a house and at high speed
- Sad that I couldn't find my camera (probably the most important thing, if I'm going to crash the plane, I want to see evidence of my dumbassness!  But lo and behold, Little girl that was visiting decided to give me a hand and found my camera!
- The camera bounced about 15 feet from the wreckage of the plane, which suffered a broken wing, the wheels fell off, the nose is dented, the prop fell off. Aside from that, it's pretty good, the tail and body is sound (important and the motor is still turning!
- Camera is cracked and messed up and pressing the button.. shut off the filming!  The CAMERA STILL WORKED!  Was still running actually, as evidenced by the 10+ extra minutes of seeing a car door (near where it "landed" eheh)
- Cat is fine, I repeat THE FELINE IS FINE!

Quality of the video is pretty awesome, when taking into account the size, etc; the stills I'm adding do not do this camera justice.  I'll post a youtube vid soon (probably sometime next week, have to edit out the long "car view" first and some stills of the crashed plane!

The plane took a big hit, I'll be ordering a new wing but I think everything's ok, she's a tough sucker! :)  Learned a lesson today, learned to listen to my "voice of reason" and yeah, learned to do as the manual says: don't fly in heavy wind :).  Considering the battle of the elements, I was impressed with this park flyer.

Nifty!!!!

We had the derby today, and our results were not so good. Especially compared to last year's 2nd in den and 5th overall.
This year the car tracked to the left and our 4th wheel (lifted so it doesnt touch the track surface which reduces friction) wound up rubbing against the rail slowing us way down. There was no indication of it running crooked during our 'hi tech kitchen floor tests'. Needless to say we were eliminated by our 3rd run (double elimination). I guess we'll take advantage of the practice runs on the track next year to work out any kinks.

The camera gave pretty good results, but the video has been compressed for youtube so it loses a bit of quality. In any event, we're having fun with it.

After seeing that footage of suburbia, I am SO glad I live in a tiny island village. There is no way in hell I could do the "Cubicle as home" thing... Yeah, I know, off topic. But still....

Bah, I've lived in the boonies and I've lived in the cities.  I'm near wide open spaces (you can see it in the video) and I'm near the big city, I get the best of everything.

What I would have liked though, is a cut of every pool sold. Holy cow, I never realized how many pools we have around here!!!

Damm you look like someone I used to work with. What's with all the pools in your area? Man if you hit that kitty PETA would have had a bounty on you.

ED, I wasn't trolling, just making an observation. Where I live there are no McD's, walmarts, housing developments. It isn't paradise, but it IS different. The reason I am glad to live here is that it isn't "just like everywhere else". Sameness would kill me young...

Seeing the cat on the video is the #1 reason why I won't fly in heavy wind anymore, just reminded me you never know what you can hit.  An accident can still happen, I can live with that but I knew the winds were too strong, so that's not really an accident, right?  So lesson learned, at least put the chance on my side.

BTW, I also bought the xport drop zone adapter, so I can drop a little parachutist via a press of a button on the remote. I've got another camera on order, once I get it in, I plan on replacing the little guy with the camera (or attach the camera to him) and then have both cameras rolling (and timed).  Might be cool to link them together in a youtube video, one snaps the gate open and the chute/camera drop, while the other is filming all the way down.  All the youtube vids I've seen that have tried this seem to show the parachutist camera POV is just rotating out of control, but I have an idea about that, that might bring stability on the way down. :)

It's still bizarre that he's referring to detached homes, with yards big enough for swimming pools as "cubicles".

And here's the next video, winds were gentler, flew from a different spot (but close-by).  I can't say it often enough, this camera kicks ass.

Maybe you suburb/city folk don't know what a yard is, but I can assure you... those aren't yards, they are postage stamps.  If you need a riding mower to cut your grass then you have a yard, otherwise you have a "lawn" which is yuppie speak for that puny 15 feet of grass between your driveway and your neighboors.  The fact that some of them crammed pools into their back lawn areas doesn't make them any bigger.

But I'm not knocking it....there are advantages to different types of neighborhoods, I'm just saying... it isn't strange at all to call them cubicles.

Getting back on topic, these little cameras are cool, I need to pick some up and see what uses I can find for them.

I'm thinking instead of a rc plane, maybe a rc-blimp.  The slow movement would make for better footage.

So,when I was a kid and used a MANUAL push mower to mow BOTH the front lawn and back lawn that I didnt have a lawn? It took me 4 hours to do the ---smurfing--- thing, all 1/2 acre!!

Other than that I get what you means, tho.

Note I said "need a riding mower", not "have a riding mower".   ;)

Nah, I just have the camera on the upper half.  Next time, I'm putting the camera on the lower half, that way it will take video of the ground on the way down as well.
