Title: best of the genres!
Post by: Nataq on August 22, 2005, 12:00:13 pm
Im creating a favorite folder with all the best games I can found. And I found that there is a LOT of same genre games (like soccers for exemple) ! I dont want to try them all to find the good ones... So to make sure im not missing the greatest ones can you guys shares what you think are the best game for every genre ? Lets seperate those in a few categories.

-soccers (didnt find one for now)
-football (not sure about this one neither)
-golf (other than golden tee ??)
-brawlers (would say simpsons)
-shooters (I like strikers 1945)
-plateform (one that came in mind is Toki)
-puzzle (tetris of course, I know this one was too easy :)
-gunners (jurassic park)
-trackball games (dont have favorite one yet)

all those categories have a LOT of games. I already have some favorites ones but im sure im missing some.

-soccers
none here

-football
10 yard dash I play a lot!  love the classics

-golf
gtg really shines here.. .until then, it was all pc ports

-brawlers (would say simpsons)
-shooters
Alchon or Slap Fight (same game)
I really like a lot of these... and I mix them up all the time.

-plateform
Black Tiger

-puzzle
The round one spitting balls...  whats that one called?  GREAT with a spinner

-gunners
T2 is a great game.  Steel Gunner?  is that the name of the other one?  That one is fun also.

-trackball games
I'm suprised at how few I really play.  I thought I would use it MUCH more then I do... especially now that I have a spinner....  But I'm sticking with the classics.
Centipede

Um this is very subjective/personal you realize? For example I would NEVER consider The Simpsons as one of the best brawlers...

-golf (other than golden tee ??) Sente Mini Golf
-brawlers Burning Fight
-shooters Juno First
-plateform Rolling Thunder
-puzzle Tetris
-gunners Revolution X (for its weirdness)
-trackball Centipede

For me:

-football) High Impact, Blitz (PC port though)
-golf) NeoGeo TurfMasters
-brawlers) TMNT, Simpsons, Double Dragon
-shooters) DoDonPachi
-platform) Metal Slug, though MS is a brawling platformer :)
-puzzle) Dr. Mario, Tetris, PuzzLoop.
-trackball games) Missle Command, Quantum, Centipede, Millipede

What might be better for categories is take catlist categories and sub categories :)  Otherwise I was thinking of putting bomber man in platform, though it is a maze game.

-soccers (didnt find one for now)
dunno, never played a soccer game

-football (not sure about this one neither)
I like football frenzy, but it's a little slow

-golf (other than golden tee ??)
dunno, but if you like golf, try Capcom bowling.  I can play that game all day.

-brawlers (would say simpsons)
Gotta get TMNT and TMNT turtles in time
Dungeons and Dragons.  (both play the same, they are fun)
King of Dragons

-shooters (I like strikers 1945)
Dragon Blaze
Thundercross
Life Force
Raidens (any)

-plateform (one that came in mind is Toki)
Magic Sword
Black Tiger
These fall in, but you HAVE to include Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr.

-puzzle (tetris of course, I know this one was too easy :)
Puzzle Bobble
Dr. Mario

-gunners (jurassic park)
Dunno, if you mean light guns, then I love the point blank series.

-trackball games (dont have favorite one yet)
(capcom bowling is awesome, centepede is a classic)

all those categories have a LOT of games. I already have some favorites ones but im sure im missing some.

-platform

Black Tiger (My all time favorite, $.25 for 45 mins of fun ;D)

-soccers (never played one that I can remember)

-football (I guess blitz by default. NBA Jam would be in my basket ball category)

-golf (i've actually never played golden tee)

-brawlers (Simpsons. X-Men and TMNT were also cool, but the mini games in the simpsons made it better)

-shooters (For the longest time it was Raiden 2. But then I found Strikers 1945 plus)

-platform (Metal Slug X, but in general the whole Metal Slug series)

-puzzle (tie between Super Puzzle Fighter 2 and Puzzle Bobble)

-gunners (T2 <---- spent waaaayyy too many quarters on this machine)

-trackball games (Cabal)

lol, I think we need more categories... I have more favorites but I'm not sure where they belong (i.e Ms Pac-Man, Street Fighter 2, Any driving game, etc...)

If there's no category for any of the Pac-man series then what's the point?  ::)  8)

Centipede

You're not talking about PuzzLoop are you?  Cause even though that says analog support, I get no action with my spinner (Tried setting it in game settings, but doesn't register in games.)

I'm also a HUGE Puzzle Bobble fan and recently renoticed that these games also claim to support analog control.  Would LOVE to get these working with a spinner, but I've had zero luck with these either.  Anyone?

EDIT:  Son of a gun.  Puzzle Loop can be enabled by entering Service Mode?  Arrggh!  I've wanted to play that with a spinner for 1.5 years.  Puzzle Bobble has service mode, but I can't find anything.  Don't suppose you can enable these too?

That's funny...  I probably play more trackball games than anything else.  The trackball games seem to be the games that never lose their lustre, so we keep coming back for more.

All of the above, and:

-football: speedball2
-golf: dunno...
-brawlers: Sokonuke Taisen Game ( http://www.vgmuseum.com/images/arcade3/02/255.html )
-side-scrolling fighters: Vendetta (highly underrated!)
-fighters: Wakuwaku 7
-shooters: Galaga '88 and Twinkle Star Sprites
-platform: liquid kids
-puzzle:  puzzle bobble (please someone show me the trackball option!!!)
-gunners: Railchase

-bowling: Simpsons Bowling

I tried to name not so well known, but nonetheless great games...

Resurrecting this thread because I'm looking to find some good games that I've never tried before.

There should be a "spinner" category as well!
Current favorite spinner games:

Cameltry (Wow!  Awesome game)
Tempest (of course)
Arkanoid 2

Another new shooter I found the other day is "Boogie Wings".  Great graphics and music, but the game is a bit of a button masher.

-soccers (didnt find one for now)
soccer games are usually good if they're not too strictly timed. but I can never remember the names.  I think it's Taito soccer, but I'll check.

-football (not sure about this one neither)

-golf
I remember golden tee being much better than the version I've got running. button left, button right, roll... no club selection.. seems kind of thin

-brawlers (would say simpsons)
Cadalacs and Dinosaurs is perhaps the most under appreciated game ever.  Beat people up and get rewarded with hamburgers.  It doesn't get better than that.
Captain Commando is good, as is xmen.

-shooters (I like strikers 1945)
I'm going with heavy barrel.

-plateform (one that came in mind is Toki)
Black Tiger is of course great, but I was suprised by Battle Chopper despite the graphic style.

-puzzle (tetris of course, I know this one was too easy :)
I'm really enjoying Pang.  Challenging to say the least.  Maybe it doesn't fit the puzzle category, but maybe that's what makes it good.

-gunners (jurassic park)
can't say I've enjoyed a gunner that wasn't in a cabinet with a good gun on it.  I'm on a pc right now and my first cab probably won't have gund right away.

-trackball games (dont have favorite one yet)

Puzzle - Uo Poko

This game helped my wife and I keep our sanity during the first few months after or baby was born.  Since it only uses a single control (down) it was easy to play while feeding him and the colourful graphics kept him entertained  ;D

Reviving an old topic I know  :P

Just had to share Super Sidekicks 2 and 3 as decent soccer games, in light of the world cup  ;D  I'm suprised it wasn't mentioned here!
