Title: Can this monitor run 15Khz?
Post by: bluetrain on September 16, 2019, 10:05:44 am
Found an old Apple trinitron 20" that I managed to get working. My intention was to build a new groovymame / 15khz cabinet. I thought 15Khz would be a no-brainer because it is a crt but now I´m not sure if 15khz is possible?

Looking at those specs it doesn´t seem to go under 31khz?'' Is it safe hook it up to a computer that has a working Gmame setup and try or is it a bad idea?

Computer monitors are often 31khz minimum.  Not all CRTs support 15khz.

According to those specs it’s 31khz.  Just need to select the appropriate monitor settings when setting up Groovymame in Video Mode Maker so that GroovyMame will know to not go below 31khz.  You probably will want to add some scan line effects to more closely mimic a 15khz screen.  It will work fine and for some games that were 31khz resolution you’ll have a native picture.

If you have an existing GroovyMame computer setup, and it’s outputting 15khz your monitor will most likely give you an “out of range” pop up assuming the Windows desktop was setup at 15khz.  You’d have to boot into safe mode and change that to a 31khz (VGA, 640x480p) setting to get a picture on that monitor, and go from there.

Thanks!

Got another bad boy https://www.cnet.com/products/samsung-syncmaster-753dfx-crt-monitor-17-series/ that I want to try this weekend.

I want to be able to switch between my old tv and the monitor (31khz) What would be the smartest setup? Two separate OS?
