Title: Editing Mame's Scanlines.PNG Effect??
Post by: lettuce on August 10, 2008, 05:04:35 am
Is it possible to edit the scanlines.png file what mame uses for one of its effects? Im basically using mame with the setting for prescale set to 2 rather than the default 1, in conjuction with the 'scanlines.png' effect, although this give an almost 99% authentic scanline effect on my monitor, ive noticed that the black pixels inbetween each active pixel (scanline) are not quite thick enough. So i was woundering if it was possible to increase the thickness of the scanline by another row of pixels across the screen thus giving an 100% authentic look?

It's a PNG, so it's easy to edit. Just take it into an image editor and increase the size of the image, or increase the thickness of the lines.

I was just woundering if there was a quick and esay way to do that, it would take forever to make each scanline on the PNG a pixel thicker

Just try increasing the size slightly. A pixel or two bigger, then try it.

Ok, ive now noticed that when u add the scanline effect, it seems to washout the colours, and the bightness or contrast doesnt seem to be as bright. I have tried changing the brightness, contrasts and gamma settings in mame, but cant get it anywhere near as it looks without the scanline effect on. Any ideas why this happens?. I know the scanline png has white and grey lines going down, would it make a difference if these white lines where not white and instead transparent??

Maybe try flipping it negative?

This is VERY easy to do.

In photoshop, make an image that is ONE PIXEL wide by TWO tall.

Zoom in as far as you can.

Select the Gray you want, and paint one of the pixels gray.

Select all.

Edit -> Make Pattern.  call it "scanlines"

Create a new image 32x32
Fill using the pattern you created.

You can create a 1x3 pixel image if you want a thicker black/white.

I cannot find the 'make pattern' option? Also would this remove the washed out effect thats you seem to get with the scanlines.png file?

I have no idea.. I'm just telling you how you can create the PNG file.  you'll have to experiment with the overlay yourself.
