Figure i would share my project here, i do alot of restoration stuff on klov but this doesn't really fit the crowed lol.
So i picked up a conversion cocktail thats in amazing shape... butbwas converted to a merrit game called phrase craze. Fun game i even made a little video of it..
https://youtu.be/wg8p4bZjn5c
-
So first thing i did was work on the panels.. i took all the merrit buttons out kept that stuff together.. and assessed the situation..
I had my homie kris Gackattack mail me some metal slugs to fill all the holes in the panels and i welded them .. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/455e3a0b608220dd22c5c027be863e65.png)

Then i stripped them
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/da83c1ea59437effd86d459e58035421.png)
And sand blasted them
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/019ce6da71cdbd7bff78dd3394062f63.png)
-
Since im not the greatest at welding, and it looks like i used sparklers lol, i had to straight edge and grind the plugs flush..(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/048f8e3a820aebbab782fed2dbd73efe.png)

Close enough for the crazy Russian girls i date lol

I plan on using original art work from rich at ThisOldGame... the underlay
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/3c7e6c4690e5d49583af939aa9606d0c.png)
And his CPOs... (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/abe3de06f8f41e14fb78e699cc5db661.png)
-
Originally Galaxian used swing switches which are cool, but mine are long gone and also i would like to have some variety, so im going to go with joysticks instead, and since the cpos are not punched for buttons or joys, this works in my favor cause i want to get the joystick some what centered and looking good with the art...
-
So im not a huge fan of micro switch anything except where it was originally used like my Q*bert which is an odd factory cherry switch so i decided that i would order the grovey game gear Dominux8 white ball top 8 way short smooth circular (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/01e260a187857c67d5ba43c97df59697.png)
Neat joysticks... there kinda like wicos which i love, and i order short cause its going in a metal panel, and its a cocktail. But i hit a snag... when i did a quick mock up when they arrived it was real obvious they were still to tall... (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/1a0ae2585cf7d2a65c580b1d363c7bdb.png)
-
The welding looks good. That's a skill I wish I had myself!
-
I did have a namco reunion style joy handy so i tryed it in place... (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/be6d14ed40a5e1b1bfb7ec467f3a8f8d.png)
Much much better...
Except i wanted white, so i ordered white(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/121925e762a20042592db6408776bbe8.jpg)
Heres a comparison of the short micro white next to the short dominux 8 leafs from govey game gear that can be bought here

Thank you, its a simple mig job....
-
Well, if you remember me saying I'm not really a micro switch kinda guy, and i had already purchased the Dominux 8s it was eating away at me that i wasted the money on them only to not use them....
So one Sunday morning as i was contemplating my day, i had an idea....
I decided that I couldn't space the joystick down, it's already out of room and the panel... infact the operator before me did me a favor and cut out the bottom of the panel, so the purists in me didnt freak out about making more adjustments. And its a conversion right, im doing it a favor... but heres how it is now, lol...(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/9f1ae077ee6ad1c5901bea278dcbffff.png)
-
So i cant space down the joy, but i can shorten the shaft... heres how i did that...
Now im 20 year factory technician for the HD motor company, which gives me access to lots of neat stuff at the shop.. but believe me, a savy person could do the same, using lesser tools if there careful about it..
I am willing to help out others thou if you read this and its an answer you were looking for..
So here again is a comparison photo (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/265b4b921913472d3784d2b8500a0ed5.jpg)
I need to make my dominux 8 the same hight and this is how i did it.. first i took off the ball tops (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/940e634e2854a46ba6316b184fca2e6e.jpg)
Then i took some measurements
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/30ed1602de75402a6f5960a6eb728a4e.jpg)
-
The difference in hight was a little over 1/2 and inch at .580 i think(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/8ca5e1149bfa1ede913efdc26409b379.jpg)
Ya .580 so thats how much i need to take off the shaft at the dominux8
-
So i chucked up the shaft in the lathe and used a end mill blade, ran it down, periodically checking how much i took off till i was close (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/42ef9625ecb6f50ef1d1425340728065.jpg)
Now very very important!! You must be listening to Creedence Clearwater revival at full volume when using a lathe
-
Heres a comparison to one cut down to one that has not, i had to do 2 because its a cocktail (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/d8d213d0e866c4d640e84652c163ce97.jpg)

And then 2 cut down to match (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/eafcff4d5148665882eb989c707d42a0.jpg)
Once i had them both cut down, i had to determine what size hole to drill in the middle....
-
So i had to determine the size of the center to drill based on the thread pitch and size of the original and what I believe is Industry standard for all of these ball tops, and that is m6x1.0
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/f6d3eb4721776e09ba8ace2d84347c61.jpg)
I double check that it was by installing a thread restore tap in the ball top
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/7077ba009c714f83d9553965a1b04cc8.jpg)
-
So knowing the size of a stud i would have to reinsert with those threads M6x1.0 i cross reference using google and found i think was a #5 drill
http://www.gearhob.com/eng/design/drill_eng.htm (http://www.gearhob.com/eng/design/drill_eng.htm)
A number 5 is .2055. The closest fractional drove it slightly smaller than that was a 13/16 at .2031 i think is what i used
And drilled out the centers
-
So i chucked it back up and center drilled the shafts (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/b1cd2aee34aeb2647a02b6ce109570f3.jpg)
Once i had them both drilled i used my tap M6x1.0 and tapped the holes!!
Insert dirty jokes!!kaboom
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/343f2bb6f0314d40bb88a8e1f9f66987.jpg)
-
So what i used for the studs were some socket head allens M6x1.0 and i did a quick look to see how much should extend out of the shaft.. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/f3b057caf546a507f4064ec48ceea29a.jpg)
Then i installed a M6c1.0 die on the bolt, red loctite the tip and installed into. The reason for installing the die was to repair the threads after i used a cut off wheel to cut the bolt down once it was installed(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/0ccd22e9db06bab35fbf6f49c93eb090.jpg)
File the tip, removed the dye.. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/34e71d2738f335645e33bae9c24af6e2.jpg)
Test fit the ball top(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/509f8e95b7ba8bf6efdc2fa15fc92499.jpg)
-
Then i reassembled the joysticks after I finished the second shaft... (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/a411f7cb72e1cb7bf905badee29e52c5.jpg)
And that the new comparison photo and here finished product...(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/7bedb00e0c1a419ab36a659ad8590d60.jpg)

I dont think i could have got any closer... lol

Now this is a motherf***ing build log! Noobs take note.
Beastly work so far, I LOVE everything that's going on in here.
Please don't screw it up by throwing an LCD into this thing. If you're going the extra mile to get an authentic feel to the controls, I trust you'll do the same to the rest.
Really great job so far! :applaud:
-
I got my art from Rich, ThisOldGame at California extreme arcade show. I was an exhibitor there this past weekend.... was alot of work...(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170731/d408642e37624e303caccd982aa26d2b.jpg)

No I don't believe in flat screens, this thing has an electro Home go7 CBO, which historically rejects negative composite sync. I'll go over how to modify the chassis by fixing some trapezoidal issues and doing the sync curl mod when I get to the part. When it comes to doing a RPie i'm probably going to rely heavily on you guys to pull that off that's not something I'm very familiar with. I just went threw the GO7 CBO war with a zoo keeper build using a JROk on klov and covered it in detail how I pulled that off.
I think people are afraid of them, and avoid builds with them and that's hows flat screens worm there way in.
But I'm not a flat screen person buy any means..
This was a GO7 I modified and it came out beautiful when it was done.. but i will cover the details on this to. I do have the parts to build a K7000 from scratch, using a a chassis, frame and donor tv with the correct neck to fit the k7000 wells Gardner. I'm just not sure yet.
This is going kinda slow, because it's the busy season for me right now at work, and then there was just cax to so life has been busy... lol

Not a bunch of progress but I got the underlay installed (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170806/cd4b169f4b107e82398739e8281edd3d.jpg)

Going to make templates of
The art to figure out how to best center the joy stick on the panel, and I think im going see if i can get my friend Johnny Webb to well in studs on the back side so I don't have any carriage bolts showing on top, since the original how to swing switch and it didn't have any carriage bolts going through there. All that stuff is missing on these things were swish cheese. I want to get the cleanest look as possible and I want to have as much ability to play other games, so that's why all the fuss with the smooth circular leave switches(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170807/1b2679fd76813bec75af16ab90eadc24.jpg)
Ill use some transfer paper to populate a nice thick template then I can set up the panels and try to figure out the location for the joystick. The buttonholes obviously will go in the stock locations
-
Have the original button holes opened back up and fitted with some leafs from my stash ill polish these up nice but I like the red and white contrast I think it will be neat. I might have yellow and red....
I filed down the the button holder abit so that the the button would be slightly taller like Nintendo styles. Just alittle... I like a lighter button and I like the look (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170807/0e07424e327160927e0ffab56d9d9f27.jpg)

so i decided to have new panels made. I goofed up one of mine drilling the joystick hole of center, pissed me off, i knew a guy, cost me 35 bucks per panel, way way to much money considering that's what i payed for game..... but i just don't want to back track and time is short right now, i need to move on... i have other projects coming and i want to stay on track... here's what the new blanks look like

if anyone ever needs a set i can have them done but its not very cost effective...
-
Looks like there is an issue with using multi hardware here, was not aware of that being an issue...
I did order my board, without roms or software as its a choice and much cheaper, but since it's frowned upon i guess i'll leave that part out...
weird that anybody could find it by googling it, but i feel as thou if provide information to the parts i was using, it's not supported here, and maybe got the censorship??
Ether way i lost interest in sharing here. not my style, no need to offend anybody because the rules in place...
ill just gracefully move on...
sorry for the miss happ!!
