Dell 19" 4:3 monitor - ebay £35 free del

2 cheapo ball top "ZIPPYY" joysticks + 14 buttons (cheapish ones) + 1+2 player buttons - ebay £27 inc del

going to look into hyperspin for the FE  ;D

my aim is to do the complete bartop for less than £150 (UK), don't we all love a bargain  8)

That's about it for now, it may take a while post an update, you have been warned  ;)

I like your design... reminds me of the old TRS-80 computer from my high school! :)

I've checked out those plans in the past, you'll have a lot of fun.  I recommend extending the sides up enough to give you a marquee.  It really helps the project look like a cohesive unit.

Exactly my thoughts about the marquee, got some thoughts running round my head, will have to get them on paper  :)

Just a quick update pictures of the parts i have so far  :)

Should be able to use almost all the parts in the pc (including psu, usb front panel etc)

looking at the joystick picture, i've realised the shafts are a little on the short side  ;)  :-[ will have to look at different mounting options.

the psu as a side exhaust so i will need to use some more of the bbq grill for that  ;D

Hi All,

My 'new' pc, well a used n dusty HP DC5800 core 2 duo (3.0ghz) SFF, 2gb ram, 500GB HD, DVD writer and Multi card reader all for £31 delivered  ;D, at least with this setup "dead or alive" and similar 3D games on mame play spot on now :)

The GFX card is a ATI HD6450 1GB that i had in my parts box.

and to prove i'm really going for it this time, cut the MDF as well  8), will get some plans up when i can work them out from my scuffy doodles lol

Looking around for a joypad encoder i got a bargain again from ebay, 2 joysticks, 16 buttons, 4 smaller buttons, all in white plus 2 "zero delay" encoders and wiring for £21.04 coming from china , should hopefully be here shortly :), did have the parts i posted previously but couldn't resist it for the price.

Oh the 8' x 4' mdf sheet was a slight 'second', scruffy looking and a damaged corner for £3 from my local diy shop, just enough for 1 bartop and spares if needed or 2 bartops if I'm careful  ;D

Trying to keep costs down so a bit of a impulse buy - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0065RZG88/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0065RZG88/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

will have to router out a recess as the 12mm MDF is the full length of the threads, oops.

was going to cut the sides today but er it's a little damp outside  :badmood:

Just a small update, borrowed a drill press from a friend, used 25mm and 30mm Forstner bits, mine from a case of 5 different sizes, got them a while back but never used them till now :)

surprised myself how good the bits were, used a template from slagcoin.com, dont we all  ;D

CP size is 495mm x 218mm x 12mm.

So it begins at last.................

Wow, didn't realise it had been 2 months since i last did a little work on it  :-[

got most of the parts routed to size, only took pictures of the side, which measures approx 440x540mm, the entire width will be about 530mm

outside edges were routed at a 45 degree angle, first time i've used the router for this, turned out better than i expected.

HAve you test fit the joysticks yet ??? -- ( looks to be very little depth in the CPO to fit them ) :dunno
Title: Re: Bartop - parts n planning.......BUILDING soon ;-)

Yeah they fit fine, although I did have to drill a small recess for each shaft, it was that or rebate the joystick mounting plates so I took the easier option :)

Good - was a bit worried as I had run into the same sort of issue when building my robotron bartop the Happ competition joysticks fit but wouldn't move so had to remove about a 1/4" of the 1/2" MDF under them - and even though the zippys are a bit smaller it still looked like a tight fit from the pic !

A couple more pictures  ;D

the holes on the top are for the usb speakers i have, might be installing a exhaust fan between the two, not sure yet.

used "inset hinges" so the rear door will sit flush.

the small hole to the right on the rear is for the power on switch, will grab a pic later  ;)

the rear rebate of the bezel i did free hand hence the slight over run  :-[

After a quick sand with 240 grit, it's now primed (cheap small tin of wood primer from my local poundshop or "dollar tree" perhaps)

can also see the 2 recesses i drilled with a forstner bit, i know one is slightly higher but no one will see them  ;)

Yes, should have cut the hole for the top exhaust fan before priming, easy enough to sort when finally decided what size fan and where it's going, if i didn't prime now it might be another year before i did  :P

Sorted most wires still need to sort out the speakers and top mounted fan, getting there  :)

had to mod the PSU as it only came with 3 sata and 1 floppy connection but needed molex for the fans, cut off the floppy end,  used a old 3 molex connection off a dead PSU,soldered and heat shrunk, knew they would come in handy some day  ;D

fitted my led power switch, again modded the OEM cable, made an error as i forgot to put on the locking nut for the switch before soldering, nothing a little hot glue can't fix  ;D

found a old fire guard in a skip, ideal to use for the mesh to protect the fan and speakers   :D

the banding that holds the CPU fan/speakers/SSD and plug strip is -

got loads left, very useful stuff and pretty cheap.

Done more in the last few days than i have in the last few years lol

To mount the motherboard i cut out the tray from the bottom of the SFF pc,screwed that to the mdf then screwed on the motherboard, simply job and saved time :)

also cut out the OEM serial key then recycled the rest  ;D

Wired up the control panel  ;D

firstly, it was wrapped in some cheapo (£1.49) wrap from Lidl  ;), got a slight texture to it,will see how it wears.

tidied up the wires as i was going, made a slight error as the button that will be P2 start is a little stretched see middle picture, still works :)

Used 1"x1" softwood to support the panel, used some Type D insert nuts and M4 countersunk machine screws, like these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M4-Countersunk-CSK-Head-Allen-Socket-Screws-High-Tensile-BLACK-Pack-of-20-/400258269297?var=670017656776&hash=item5d31408071 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M4-Countersunk-CSK-Head-Allen-Socket-Screws-High-Tensile-BLACK-Pack-of-20-/400258269297?var=670017656776&hash=item5d31408071) to secure it, may need to add one to the bottom middle as there is some flex  :-\

Just the monitor surround and marquee, got some ideas, will try a few out   ;D

Finished the bezel and almost done the marquee :)

Used chrome stick on letters from "The Range" (uk shop) 49p each, should be used for the rears of cars lol, they are approx 28mm high, used some EL (neon) wire that i had from way back when, thought it might give it that "neon" glow, sadly they aren't bright enough (not switched on in picture) plus they can be seen a little when sat at the bartop :( (not the greatest of pictures, sorry)

will look into some led strip lights at some point instead, maybe some multi coloured ones, might add them to the underside as well  ;)

the bezel is covered in a light grey tinted perspex 3mm thick, from eBay, just over £7 plus £5.50 postage !!!! need to sand one edge slightly as it's got a small bow to it as it's wedged in pretty tight.

not sure for the sides, might just leave them plain white or add some manufactures names in a line to make it a little "ricey"  >:D

still a bit to do, such as tidy up some cables inside, replace some of the fans as they are too noisy, add some warning/caution stickers to the rear, get windows to load just hyperspin but still need to work on the roms etc......................... trouble is i've made it fully playable, so they may have to wait  ;D

maybe over the winter i will get the bits sorted out and again famous last words  ;)

Just a small update, tidied some more inside the bartop, shortened the power cable for the monitor, got a bag full that i rescued, was being thrown out and going to land fill  :dunno, added a fan and controller, Ebay for just under £5, cycles thru 256 colours or can be set to any colour you like, much better than the previous one.

Changed the CPU fan as that was noisy as well, again much better, left the intake fan disabled, not sure if its needed now, will have to play some more to see how warm it gets.

The small black box just below the monitor to the right is for the neon string, got a LED strip replacement coming from china, should be here early December - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301771095349?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=600588612154&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301771095349?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=600588612154&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT)

Should be able to wire to the 5v easily enough, not sure why anyone would light up their underwear tho (see ebay advert above).

Thanks again for reading :)

Hi All,

Just a small update, had friends and family over the festive period, they all loved the bartop  ;D, nephew wants his own now, might be another couple of years tho  :-[

had a major software update, from windows vista to windows 8,even with a SSD i couldn't get vista to boot as quick as i would have liked hence the change, also removed the 60gb ssd and hard drive, replaced with a single 120gb SSD to save on weight, will have to look into replacing the PSU as well as the fan is constantly running at full speed even with the door fully lowered, it's plugged into the motherboard, wether it's because i changed the CPU fan and cant regulate it's own temperatures  ??? would need to replace it if i upgraded the gfx card anyways.

Also printed some warning/caution labels for the rear and a sticker for the sides from this site - http://www.flamingtext.co.uk/logo/Design-Chrominium (http://www.flamingtext.co.uk/logo/Design-Chrominium) not sure what to add to the rest of the sides tho, will also add some stickers to the front maybe.

One thing that will need changing at some point is the control panel as player 1 side is too far over to the left and your fingers hang over the side, that can wait until the better weather tho.

thanks again for reading

Cheers

Holy thread revival batman

having robbed this bartop of some components for other projects/bartops i thought it about time to install a new pc setup and get it back up and running -

Dell optiplex 3010 SFF
i3 3225 3.3ghz
4gb g.skill ram (had this for a while in my parts box)
500gb HD (might swap for a SSD tho)
AMD Radeon R5 340X 2GB OEM
Windows 10 pro

various holes in the mount board where other parts used to be.

running hyperspin with a few more systems added such as naomi, will add a full list when its complete.

For the motherboard stand offs I just cut a used biro into 10mm pieces then used wood screws to fasten it down, a little tricky lining up some of them but worked a treat.

got the old gal back together, need to add the warning stickers back to the rear panel again as i vinyl wrapped it this time, sanded the outside as the spray paint was scuffed and scratched, went with some quick drying gloss and a mini foam roller, never used this type of roller before, left a nice texture which i quite like :)

As i had removed the speakers i looked for a replacement, stumbled across this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01LWQBKMO?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE got mine for £5.81  8) not going to blow your socks off but adds a nice sound to the previous speakers, secured with a  bracket so it doesn't move, wasn't sure if it was going to fit but its in there and nothing catches, another bullet dodged  ;D had to extend the speaker wires as they were very short, used some from a old pc case.

Used 2 arctic 80mm fans as yes you guessed it the others were removed for other projects  ;) used some mesh from a old wire waste paper basket I've had for years from "poundworld" (dollartree),used the same mesh for the speakers too.

thought id change out the controls as well for some other Chinese ones, this time they light up, hell why not for £23 delivered, again not greatest by any means, the joysticks do a random colour pattern and not in sync even tho they are powered by the same wire (used a spare sata cable on the PSU, cut the 12v and ground wire then extended them towards the control panel, the buttons are solid colours, work well and are quite sensitive, will have to change out the vinyl on the panel as when u get hot hands they kinda stick a little to it, will look for some with a little texture perhaps.
