So help me out on this so I can understand what is going on. I know that a method to resurrect cps2 suicide boards has been around for years. I also know that mame has somehow been able to decrypt these roms for years. So what exactly did they figure out? I thought the security had to have long since been figured out due to the two previously mentioned things.
-
The post specifically says "without hardware modification". So I'm assuming that MAME and the de-suicide stuff was a hack and not actual decryption.

oh ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- here we go again

One could effectively argue Sec. 103(f) of the DMCA (17 U.S.C. § 1201) allows reverse engineering, and this would fall under that section. But lets not play armchair lawyer, and just hope that people can start resurrecting their CPS2 B boards without resorting to Phonexing the roms.

Slow your roll, player. By hack, he meant "work around". He's not talking about the actual act of getting the game code.

Why is 'phonexing' the roms undesirable?

Why is 'phonexing' the roms undesirable?
I think it subtly changes the gameplay? I had a phoenixed MVC once, I honestly couldn't tell a difference.

Why is 'phonexing' the roms undesirable?
personally? I hate the "Phoenix Edition" branding and website ad ,but in general they have a lower "value" when buying/selling

This ^ - Most sales of these openly state if the board has been "phoenixed" or not.

Ah, didn't realize they were slipping ads for their service into the games. That's freaking annoying.

I mean, seriously. If you have a moral problem violating the copyright on ---smurfy--- old games that nobody cares about.... you may be in the wrong place....

me i care less
100% do not give a rats ass..
its the point and the grey ppl that stand behind new lanuage that get me..

if not hacked then u have full 100% permission to do it,if hacked u did not..
u cannot candy coat it,with new lanuage to fit your need's.....
i 100% care less,do it all day,but i have the stones to put it where it is..

Insisting on precision of language is an unusual stance for you to advocate.

It's always been the same language since I got into computers in the 80s.
hacked = worked around
cracked = figured out

Putting aside the semantics of what's been accomplished, will this have a practical application that will improve on phoenixing dead boards? I'd love to be done with suicide batteries. Phoenixing doesn't seem worth it in terms of cost. A cps2 multiboard with real hardware would be fun too, but the one out now seems unreliable, slow and very expensive. Any chance this would help that situation?
I guess I'm asking if this is anything more than just being cool.

I believe the goal is so that you can replace the battery, and re write the suicide ROMs with encrypted data, so its like it never happened. Phoenixing is re-writing the roms with unencrypted & modified data.
The Darksoft kit that is out now is reliable, flashes games when you change in about a minute, and personally I think its reasonably priced. I own one and think its the bees knees. The only bad part is in the US you have to order from Paradise Arcade.
