Title: am I too old school?
Post by: daywane on March 17, 2019, 10:37:59 am
Wow I take like a decade off and everything is different.
Mame is way different from version 56.
does anyone even do game pad hacks any more?

<-----still miss this dog. I still have his grate grand daughter (jenny Bird)

Definitely lots of changes. The Zero Delay Encoders can be found on ebay and have taken the place of Mame gamepad hacks for most folks.
Big front end changes: check out Hyperspin, MALA and who knows what others - those are just the main two I use
Lots of kits available - Bartops especially made a big splash
In the commercial world, lots of retro offerings from working keychain games to full size replica rebuilds
AIMTRAK is probably your best choice for shooting games
The games we are playing are mostly the same though. :)

I apologize for what I am about to do. I just can't help it even though I hate it when people correct my spelling. So..... um.... sorry....

When something is too much, it is "too", not "to". The way to remember it for future reference is that it has too many O's.

So, lesson recap:

To: I am going to the park
Two: the number 2
Too: Too many O's

Saying "am I to old school" sounds like you are asking if you should create an old school for someone.

Again, sorry for what I just did. I hate myself for not being strong enough to prevent it....

No you’re not.

@OP
There’s no school like the old school. The fact you remember the early days of padhacks and lightweight mame means you can better appreciate the plethora of devices and emulation options of today. Unlike these punkass millennials who support shite commercial projects like A1up. Those fools need to go school, but it might actually be too late for them.

I two remember the days of gampad hacks but it was to much work too tear them apart so I just plugged my PC into a TV and used a game pad too play mortal kombat.

now you can just go two walmart and pick up an arcade cabinet.

Geez I was about to come to your defense and chastise the grammar police.  Then I saw another thread where you admitted to buying 5 Arcade 1Up's and even bought a 2nd Pacman just to replace the monitor in the first.  You have definitely lost your old school ways.

i can not move full arcades anymore
back and hips are bad. We were buying plug and play systems when they first came out and making small cabs for them.
$1,000 dollars and I am 21 years old running a Aladdin's Castle franchise again. putting in PC's and Raspberry Pi's in with real arcade controls

Problem with E.B. White is you'll read his book and start writing it James's and get offended when people call you clever.  Life was simpler before Elements of Style.

dawayne - what's up dude?  A lot of us are too old school around here.  The last few years have seen an influx of people to the hobby due to the ease of setting up raspberry pi.  Problem is most of the cabinets they make for them are crap because they have no nostalgia for the arcades.  And they also seem to prefer playing Zelda or Super Metroid with a joystick while standing up for some strange reason.  GET OFF MY LAWN.

Oh yeah, one more thing daywane.... there is an elitism that has creeped into the forums. Those Arcade1up cabs that everyone would be oooh'n and aaahhh'n over if you built it 5 years ago? Yeah, some folks here turn up their noses at them. I don't know if it's the lack of DIY or commercialism, but some of these guys got a real rager against them.

Don't you hate it when something "creeped" into the forums.  I just find it ironic for someone that just bought 5 Arcade 1Ups to post a thread asking if they are too old school.  I haven't been ranting in any A1Up threads.  I've left the rants for folks like you.

@leapinlew: five years ago? I would say at least fifteen.

In this day of predictive texting, poor tracking, and writer distraction, I write off 98% of typos.

MAME .56 is twenty years ago.

Haven't seen someone mention Atomic and Mala in a little while. They are too old for recent MAME.

This doesn't help you.

Hello all I new to this forum, This is the second thread I have read all the way through and enjoyed it (despite the grammar police side track). I consider my self old school, I'm an 80's kid. I had an Atari because they were cheaper than Nintendos when I was a kid. Then I followed a console path like every one else. However, I have very fond memories of the arcade machines. The small N.C. town I grew up in on the coast had machines at the ocean front tourist traps like the board walk and we had a skating rink. Most of these establishments operated same old same old till the late 90's. I have just now fell back in love with arcades hence me reading this forum. I gather there use to be a following for old school mame that I missed out on and thats what  this started as but I read it at first thinking old school gaming in general.

The only thing too "old school" in my opinion is preferring CRT. And that's not because it doesn't look better (it does), its just that the technology is dying and won't be suitable for long.

I warn you I am really new to this and my builds are no where grand...but Im having a blast and posting regularly. I can already tell this forum is going to take me to the next level. I have CRTs that will outlast most of the garbage cheap LCDs a lot of people use in their cabs. A good quality LCD might give them a run for their money in terms of longevity.

I'm jealous. I'm over here struggling to fit a 43" lcd in my Kangaroo cabinet just to get a bigger 4:3 picture. If a company came out with 4:3 monitors tomorrow, I'd by a 27" immediately. I just don't see any options anymore.

Try getting rid of CRT or old nonworking TV !
Here in Frankfort/Lburg KY trashman will not take them. Mercury in them
Country barn refused them. Same reason given.
Landfill refused them ! Same reason !
I found a dumpster that did not mind.

I've recently rediscovered the awesomeness of CRTs.  I bought 2 and got a 3rd on in a Defender cab.  I've now done a cap kit and I've bought a CRT analyzer/rejuvenator.  CRTs will be around probably as long as I'm alive.

Once the contrast issue is rectified, other display technologies will be more adequate.
