I'm shooting for a "tween" game that's not too old, but not too new.  1989.  Hopefully, that should satisfy the old fogies & the young 'uns.

When I first saw Strider at the Red Baron Arcade in the Franklin Park Mall back in Toledo, OH, I remember being blown away by the graphics, the style, the ability to climb & hang & flip around, the vibrance of the enemy characters, & the grandiose & complex environments.

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

Good luck!

I'll start off the scores with an unofficial entry of 34,000.

The first time I saw Strider (Malibu Grand Prix in Houston) was also the first time I'd seen a 25" monitor. I was doubly blown away.

I've never been any good at this game, though I've always loved it.

I'll have to hurry up and put my machine back together so I can post a score before they get out of hand

What kind of game is this not rewarding for time remaining??

I can barely break 22k

Way to set the "bar", "jason". yuk yuk yuk!

How do you defeat the 3 "dancers" ?
Title: Re: High Score Competition #49 - Strider
Post by: jasonbar on August 15, 2010, 03:08:33 pm
RayB: when I beat the 3 dancers on the top of the airship, I usually take a hit or two.  I just go in swinging & hope I get them before I get me (and hope that I have a couple of hit points left).

OK, no official scores yet, so here's a bump & a challenge.  My best score so far: 68,400.  Had a really good game.

Honest, I picked Strider just b/c it's a cool game--I've never played it competitively or anything.

Come on, somebody post a score--how about you folks who rocked Black Dragon?  That's a similar game & I couldn't get anywhere even remotely close to those top scores.

Thanks,
-Jason

I got around 35,000
but man 68 damn I'm going to have to work a little harder

As for the Dancers if you do the slide attack just as they land from a jump you can take em down easy
although I still haven't perfected the timing enough to get all 3 without taking a little damage, but I have made it out of there with only one hit

Uuuhhhh...slide attack?  There's a slide attack???   :o

You mean when you hold down & hit jump to slide?  I thought that was just an avoision thing, not an attack!  Doy on me!

Wow, I'm lousy!

And he seems to be playing on a harder skill level (more bombs falling on the little helicopters on the way up to the airship), & he skips killing lots of the bad guys.

I guess the morals of the story are:
1 - walking is for chumps--just slide all over the place!
2 - don't lose your little helpers--they do all the work for you!

I noticed as I played that if you have the helpers the game is harder, like more bombs fall and the wall droids are much faster, so I think he's still on normal

Great scores guys - despite playing as a kid I can't get beyond 10k in my first couple of attempts.

Slightly off topic, but has anyone managed to get Strider 2 going without slowdown? It also looks pretty fun.

You just need a fast processor. My Dual core at 3.5ghz runs it very smoothly.

After playing some more Strider last night (don't worry, 59k was my best last night!), I played some Strider 2.  It plays pretty terribly on my machine (sound stutters & very low framerate).

Wow, I forgot how cool they made Strider 2!  Great use of 3D environments that are navigated like a 2D game.  Cool bosses.  The game froze after about 10 minutes or so--dang.  The one complaint that I have w/ Strider 2 is that you can't walk & slash at the same time--you stop walking when you start wailing on the sword button--that's a pretty big departure from the game mechanics of Strider 1...

Post by: deepblue on August 18, 2010, 01:15:01 pm
Jason - same here, although was mostly unplayable due to the stutter/slowdown.

What specs are you sporting on your MAME PC?

Again, sorry to be Off Topic, but this is the only Strider thread I found :)

Back On Topic - 59k is a sick score.

The Infernolab MAME PC:
Intel Pentium 4 1800MHz 1.79GHz, 1GB RAM
Windows XP Pro 2002 SP2

Dude, it's a Dell!

When I run Strider 2 or other games that my computer can't handle, I do it like so: mame strider2 -autoframeskip.

Autoframeskip does a decent job of skipping enough frames to keep the game running at its intended speed.  Decent, not great.

Thanks,
-Jason

Strider 2 seems to be a PSX release: http://www.amazon.com/Strider-2-Sega-Dreamcast/dp/B00004SWLY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1282267753&sr=8-1 (http://www.amazon.com/Strider-2-Sega-Dreamcast/dp/B00004SWLY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1282267753&sr=8-1)

Not a cheap one, though...

 :badmood:

By the way, part of the trick is never getting hit. You lose a helper when that happens. On level one, if you never get hit and you manage to find all the bonus containers, you end up with a robotic jaguar. Very useful to have. But I only ever got it once. I can't beat the dancers. They take cheap shots.
Title: Re: High Score Competition #49 - Strider
Post by: jasonbar on August 20, 2010, 03:45:24 pm
I never really noticed what the jaguar & bird do--they just seem to cruise around & distract me--do they actually hunt down & kill enemies?

When you pick up a little robot helper, he "latches" to your current highest health bar box & that box turns red.  If you get hit & lose that red box, you lose the helper.

So, if you want to be daring, get knocked down to 1 health bar box & then pick up your helpers & then pick up some health restorer.  That way, you won't lose your helpers until you die.

I haven't had the guts to try this...

-Jason

THe bird doesnt seem to do anything, but the jaguar hunts down whatever it can and destroys them in one shot.

By the way, those spider robots that shoot lasers give NO POINTS, so they are a waste of time.

Zinc is an arcade emulator that plays all the PSX based arcade games (tekken, SFEX, etc).  You even get hardware acceleration and higher resolutions.  Only problem with it is it has no NVRAM save.  And its a pain to set up. It plays the mame rom (probably an older version of the rom).

Spent so much time messing withing my nearly finished vertical cab it was 8PM (GMT) before I had a chance to have one go, but I got a good un, 72200, hope its good enough. I can do better kept messing up on level 5 where you hang upside down between the moving spikes (got killed 3 times there), kept moving before they had re-tracted (plonker).

No time for anymore goes, going on Holiday tomorrow (isle of wight), so need to get sorted, good luck to those still playing.

Hey Bender - just curious, what are the specs on the "good" machine...I just tried running Strider 2 on a couple of year old Dual Core Athlon X2 5000 and it seemed only marginally better than my old P4 2.53 clunker.

Great score too by the way - you guys are nuts, I can barely clear the first stage.

HB I died 3 times in the same spot you did, piss me off I want to get past that bit so bad!!!

DeepBlue, my "good" machine is actually the laptop I took apart for the benderama it's a core2Duo 2.5GHz with 4GB of ram and a Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT running xp64, the 64 bit version of mame is quite a bit faster at least 30% faster for me

Well done Bender, haven't got time to come back at ya.

I've actually beaten this bloody game in the Arcade so it doubly annoys, that I got killed so lame, it gets harder later when you have the orbs to fight and the amazon boss and kong boss before the final boss (which is a stink)

I think I'm gonna keep playing at this one so I may enter a throw down score at some point.

Well done.

Got back from my dinner party & had a little time to play.  Investigated some opportunities to point-press.  In the first level, you can kill lots of time along the first area & kill lots of guys & midget robots.  That can give you another thousand or so.

Then I came across a sweeeeet point source near the end of the 3rd(?) level, just before the boss that is the giant orb spinning around in the giant empty room.  You can squat there & shoot the small floating mines that slowly fill up the screen & shoot the occasional soldier who comes by.  I had 1 helper which was keeping the soldier from being a threat.  I don't know how many thousands I racked up there, but it was a lot.  You can let the timer run down to near-zero & then enter the big boss chamber & the timer resets again.

88,150 was the result--I didn't quite get as far as those slowloy extending & retracting spikes--that part's a real bear.

Still 1 hour to go--go for it!

Thanks,
-Jason

When I tried to play "for keeps," I just did worse and worse each time. Made me not enjoy Strider.

Bender - can you Link me to where I get mame 64?

Thanks thanks thanks...I'm just a little too competitive for my own good sometimes...   :-[

Looking back on my last mail, I wasn't totally clear--it seems that the game has a 1m29s counter in each area, & it resets when you move on to the next area.  Each level has many areas.  You get no bonus for any time remaining on the clock when you make it to a new area.  And I assume you die when the timer runs out (never happened to me).

I'd never even heard of point pressing until a year or so ago & I've always played games to get far & advance, not to get a high score, so it's against my nature to point press.  It feels weird.  That's why it didn't even occur to me to try this until last night.

Right before the big orb boss, you can hang out on the platform until the timer runs out, and then, when you enter the orb chamber, the timer resets & you fight the boss.  You can't go back & shoot more guards & floating mines.

You can also hang out at the beginning of level 2 & kill tons of wolves, but they're not worth as many points.

Anyway, thanks--I'm glad to see some good competition at the end of this one--since I picked Strider, picking of the next goes to Bender--have at it!
Thanks,
-Jason

hey glad you got the Mame64 running
