Title: saint's gameroom - what's he up to now? :)
Post by: saint on August 19, 2006, 09:41:32 pm
Started another project for my gameroom today!  Can you guess what it might be?  If someone guesses I'll fess up, if not then no comment until it's done . . . Spent 8 hours on it today.

Whatever could it be?

Whatever it is, I got to use power tools and bought a new laser level to boot!

And just for fun, a couple of pictures of the gameroom...

I also took a short video clip of my gameroom with the lights off if anyone is really interested -- warning, it's like 30 megs.

Could it be a sign of some sort?  Maybe it will say Saint's Gameroom?

Heh, no, but that was really screwy the way that happened. Lady who bought it said she paid 1500, her husband said 2000, Super Auctions folks said they threw the seller out for attitude.  :dizzy:

Ok, you were intrigued by McCoys Ohio state indirect light idea and you are going to put a strip all the way around the room about 1 in. off the wall. Then you will put rope lights, LEDs or new some alien technology that will put a cool looking glow down the walls without any visible direct light.

it also depends on how you arrange everything too.  square footage will be a help but if you waste space with how you arrange the games then your wasting space.  it puts mine to shame too.  after i build mine of course.

does anyone build to code?  like if you add a room you have to tell your town construction inspector so they can raise your property taxes.

my local mcdonalds has an air hockey table.  i dont know why but ice cream and air hockey makes me happy.  sad thing is it costs 2 quarters for a 9 point game.  good thing is i dont pay my friend does.

do you want one with electronic score keeping or the slider?  wait commercial meaning for quarter use or like professional?  cause you could try building one lol.

I used to move pianos as a part time job.

Ain't no way it's worse than those.  Try finding out what happens when you put a ding in someone's 750lb piano that they didn't tell you had to go up a rotating series of stair landings.

YES!  Right now on this project I am moving mine by myself multiple times. I do it one corner at a time, a foot or so at a time. :)

Turned on its side on two piano dollies, two of us moved it into place - wasn't *too* difficult, but damned heavy getting it off the trailer in the first place!

There was a pool table in our house when we moved in. We didn't want it because we had little kids so we decided to sell it. A guy came out, looked at it, made an offer, and I accepted. One minute later, 8 guys came swarming into the basement and moved like NASCAR mechanics taking it apart and running it out of the house. 5 minutes later it was gone, only the dents in the carpet remained. Much easier than sliding it or lifting it.

Moving a pool table is easy.

First, write a check to a moving company . . .

You can't slide a pool table out the door into a truck.

You know, like how basketball players can hold the ball with just one hand - which is called palming the ball? I jested that I could palm a pool table and then throw it straight into a friends 3rd story apartment.

Like I never always say, the only funny joke is the joke you have to thoroughly explain. At least I have that since the timing is way over.

No, the fact that he had 8 guys with him just in case it was in reasonable condition.  You don't convince 8 guys to show up unless there is something in it for them, and there's nothing in it for them unless the profit margin is possibly quite high.

the only funny joke is the joke you have to thoroughly explain.

I think your in the minority of that belief, I can't imagine sitting through a stand-up comedy routine where they have to thoroughly explain each joke.

Heck, the first time I heard the chicken crossing the road joke, I had to be thoroughly explained to me, it still don't make it funny.

anyway, i'm being a little picky here, so don't mind me.  ;D

I never really liked the chicken jokes either. They read like the family circus, a big gap where a joke should be. I will say that dead baby jokes sometimes read like there isn't a joke there but I think those are awesome hillarious. Like:

Whats worse than 3 dead babies in 1 trash can?
1 dead baby in 3 trash cans!

And I was jokin about liking to explain my jokes, I just say that when material bombs horribly, because what are you supposed to say at that point?

I also wait a full 5 minutes after lamers tell really obvious jokes then once everyone forgot about it burst out and go "HA! I just got it! Man, thats great!".

Same thing goes for clapping at concerts, 'specially the sucky ones...wait...wait...ok they're done, start clapping and shouting when they start playing again.

Do you have an actual working layout for the trains Saint?

My father and I have a pretty large N-Scale layout in the unfinished part of our basement.  It's a "J" shaped layout roughtly 20' x 12' ... it's not really even half way done though, since we completely reworked it a year or two ago, and never really got back into the swing of it  :banghead:

I love them though, they are tons of fun.  And I really prefer N scale over HO.... you can do so much more with less space.  Those Z scale guys are insane though  :dizzy:

Anyway, I'd guess I'm about 40% through with the project so far :)

I actually have a train that climbs inclines. It has a gear underneath it, and you put a strip of teeth down the center of the track. The gear stops it from slipping and gives it the power to climb. It's pretty cool :)

My wife Melissa, the BYOAC wood carver has a grandfather in Union, IL. He has THE most amazing HO display you have ever seen. Complete with hand painted figures, cars, planes, streets, towns, wildlife, rivers and even the city of Chicago and on and on. It is like umpteen miles of scaled track and like umpteen different lines running. He is retired and makes a supplemetal income from showing it. He is right down the street from The real Train Museum in Union, IL. Model train fan? If you are ever in that neighborhood, stop in and look during Summer months. It is all nestled in the upper level of his Big Red Barn. Must see for model railroaders in the area.

I regret to say I don't have a single photo to post right now and dang in-laws haven't made this poor guy a website...If I was closer to him I would at least do him up with with a 5 pager in an afternoon. I will try to track down a photo or two to share and post here.

Easily accesible off of I-90 about 1/2 way between Chicago and Rockford, Il.

Well the only thing I can think of is Saint is doing a modified version of the hanging train above except running it along the walls.  Not sure if this was mentioned previously as I have not read the entire post (just looked at Saints responses after the second page to see if he has given it away).

BTW, nice gameroom.

I just have to say this thread has included some of the funniest ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- I've ever read.  You guys are friggin' hilarious.

Now if I could just get my wife to understand why I'm on here so much, life would be easier.  That's probably as futile an effort as trying to get her to appreciate Monty Python, though.

Saint, please tell us what you're doing.
We've guessed a multitude of things, we've given each other ideas for our own gamerooms, we've argued about the guesses, we've argued about the ideas. I think think we've also been quite patient.... but we'd really like to know you're up to.

For those of you who have just joined us. For those of you who have lost track. A quick recap of Saint's posts in this thread.

Aug 19 2006 - Saint started, announced it, told us to guess then told us we were wrong
Aug 20 2006 - We're still guessing, we're still wrong, but chad is close with "5 black boards" & MYX is closer with "indirect light idea with some new alien technology for cool looking glow"
Aug 28 2006 - Saint confesses he's not doing anything, just fishing for ideas.
          - then announces more progress, with pictures, "What in the heck am I doing?"
     - we get a clue "combines more than 1 hobbie/passion"
Somehere here a train set is mentioned....... a lot.
Aug 29 2006 - "Hmm... I *do* own trains...."
Sep 06 2006 - "I'd guess I'm about 40% through with the project so far"
Sep 23 2006 - Saint has hurt his shoulder, ribs, head in Jujitsu. Hopes to make progress soon.
Oct 18 2006 - Now on hold due to personal issues.
Dec 08 2006 - Saint thinks the elevated train pics that Paladin posted are "cool". Everyone agrees.
Feb 28 2007 - Apparently he's "really close now. Experimenting with different paints.
Mar 01 2007 - Saint is now scared he might become a realtor.
May 03 2007 - A little over 8 months after beginning, we still don't know what Saint is up to. There have been many guesses ranging from a marquee lightbox to a poledancing stage. If one of them was right, we weren't told.

So please...... Mr. Saint..... sir...... if you would be so kind.......... WHAT ARE YOU BUILDING????

Are you building a way to display various marquees around the room w/ back lighting?  That kind of fits the hints, althoug I am not sure about the multiple hobbies hint, woodworking and arcades?  It sounded like a cool idea in another thread and now looking at the parts you had mounted in the last picture it seems like you could be doing that.

I'm guessing train track with rope lighting added to light the train and double as indirect lighting.  Also some modeling done in the corners for coolness by looking at the size of the corner pieces.  Room for a mountain terrain or station etc.

I'll also throw in this link for those that get to the end of this 5 pages which leads nowhere, here is some more reading.

I have a bunch of Maarklin stuff - some is 30 years old.  GREAT TRAINS!!

Yes, they are!  I think mine are at least 35 years old.  The picture several messages back of me and my sister playing with one of my engines is from 1971, hence the very realistic cardboard fireplace.   :)

I have a couple of boxes full of Maarklin stuff in my garage... Same ones my dad and I played with (most still 220V). one of the few childhood memories I remember.   :D

The only thing I can come up with off the top of my head is to use some side-glow fiber optic cable and use blacklight to illuminate it. I've also seen ways to run fluorescent tubes w/o any houseing, just endcaps and transformers.  The fluorescent tubes wouldn't allow bending obviously.  Another option would be if neon is available in a UV form.  All of these options probably bump you out of the price range you are looking for.  Any time we've needed blacklight on stage it's been wholes stage lighting, not ropelight like sources.

Good luck.

Post by: polaris on October 14, 2007, 11:36:36 am
hey bf , i was kinda thinkng that blacklight ropelight wouldnt actually work that well anyway, knowing what a uv cannon bulb is like, most of it is a shield to stop radiation from the bulb escaping, cant see how youd really make a good blacklight bulb that small, what do you reckon.
you ever used a blacklight gel, not sure how good that would be either?

hmm okay, um wrong on that one then. i know its a ballache but what about making your own looms up?

the only other way i can think then is to get good bright rope light or maybe el wire and wrap it in the filter i linked to.

Now don't I feel like a dummy.  We almost ordered some of the clear strips from that exact site about 4 weeks ago at work.  X-mas lights ended up working in our application but we were looking at that very site before we tried what we already had.

Great find.  Hopefully it works out, and hopefully you don't need to much of it, that is fairly pricey.

A note on the UV gels/filters.  Most of the light sources that you would put that filter on don't actually even emit enough UV light to get a blacklight effect.  All those filters usually do is make the light the purple color that white stuff glows under a real UV light.  The other thing that many UV filters are is actually a filter to REMOVE what little UV is actually in the light.

cheers for the clarification on that brian, i was wondering about their effectiveness, its uv cannons all the way for us when we need it. last year on a show i had to walk onstage every half hour to check the bulb was intact in a uv cannon, to see if the lens was good and therefore not emitting harmful rays to the stage, ahhh  the joy of health and safety reps onsite. ;)

I didn't look too long, but came up with some interesting stuff on wikipedia.  I'd heard of UVA and UVB in the past, but never really thought about the differences or their effects.  Here's the Link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_light) I only read the safety section which sounded like it would take quite a bit of exposure to cause problems, but I could be underestimating it.
Title: Re: saint's gameroom - what's he up to now? :)
Post by: patrickl on October 14, 2007, 03:29:33 pm
I used a black light tube to wipe UV EEPROMS and to make photo circuit prints. I guess they must emit at least some harmful rays to be able to do that.
Title: Re: saint's gameroom - what's he up to now? :)
Post by: polaris on October 14, 2007, 04:00:30 pm
by all accounts the glass surrounding the source is what protects you from the radiation, i will do some asking around.
regarding what i said the elf and safety boys were concerned that the glass bulb was intact , and therefore protecting you, as the bulb could still work if the glass was broken.
ill see what my workmates suggest.

he also suggested contacting  batmink (http://www.batmink.co.uk/index.php) as they may have a product available, they do a flexible neon which is possibly available in blacklight, ping em an email explaining what you need and my mate reckons theyll relish the challenge in finding a solution

It's a bit incorrect to state that UV LEDs or Lights are not dangerous.  In comparison to something else, yes, they may not be as dangerous but they are definitely not harmless.  It's akin to radation.  Low levels of radiation still have the potential to cause damage, but not nearly as much as highly active radioactive materials.  I own samples of throrium metal, uranium metal, and various other radioactive items.  The levels they emit are very low and not dangerous, but I still take precautions and don't expose myself to them for extended periods of time.  This is because even though the radiation is of a low level, it is still above zero which means it still poses a problem.

To ignore the dangerous of UV Light will simply cause many problems down the line.  There's a reson why UV light makes certain items glow or look different.  It's because of the immense energy the light has.  If it wasn't that energetic, the items wouldn't glow.  So if you think that a simple bulb will protect you from the damaging effects, look and see if the sensitive items in your room are glowing.  If they are, then the bulb isn't doing anything.

There's no problem having UV light in your cab or in your gameroom, but just pay attention to how much of it you have and how much time you spend in there.  The less exposure the better.

Ive also heard from a guy who made pieces for museums, that those
UV Leds are incredibly bad for the eyes if you look directly at them, because the intensity of LEDs is much greater than the old blacklight bulbs.

So, if anyone does make things with them... try to make sure the
light is more diffused, and that there isnt any direct visible line
of sight to the UV led head.

Well, think of it this way. Tanning booths use UV lights.

So you advise wearing eye protection in the game room?

It's probably wise not to use them.

I don't think this thread qualifies.  At least we know what Pixel is taking forever to build.  For all we know, Saint is putting together a book about how to prime and paint MDF.  The only difference between this and the papervapor "project announcements" is the pics of materials that may or may not have use for an actual project.

I'm voting that Saint can't figure out how to market his book for "Project Hat Rack" ;D  :yikes

Reminded you of the project how?  That site have people who just tease you without ever doing anything?  Hell, Saint's probably building a pole dancing platform.  Fits in with his teasing us and lack of updates.   :o

I'm always late to the party around here it seems.

And that is (was?!) without question the best game room carpet I have ever seen
