I've been thinking about doing this project for a while. A couple of months ago I saw some pictures and gameplay footage from the game Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime (http://www.asteroidbase.com/dangerous-spacetime/), and I immediately loved the game. The combination of different game concepts, the visuals and animation make this game an instant classic.
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime | First Look Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwfRYGVADL0#ws)
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is a 2-player co-op micro-platformer set inside a pink Death Star locked in battle with hordes of space baddies. Players work together running back and forth between ship control rooms, manning turrets, lasers, shields and thrusters to rack up points and stave off a vacuumy demise. In mish-mash terms you could describe it as Jumpman meets Asteroids meets Han saying “Don’t get cocky.”
This game is perfect for an arcade cabinet, so i'm going to build a two player cabinet based on an asteroids deluxe cabinet. Since team work is extremely important in this game, I like the idea of having the players close together combined with the overhang of the cabinet. The cabinet will have a custom control panel for the game with green and yellow controls for player one and two. Not sure yet about the colors and artwork of the cabinet, but pink will be a big part of it.

I think this is a great idea for a build.
I just came across this game the other day and I think it's a great idea for a game in general.
It seems like the simple arcade play is coming back in a lot of these newer games.
I still keep knocking around the idea of building a cabinet based on the classic Jumpman game.
-
Ha, no kidding, in the last few weeks I've been thinking about what a dedicated cabinet for this game would be like. Will be following this one closely!
-
Wow, that game looks very nice and is potentially a good target for an arcade cabinet. From watching the gameplay and the screenshots, I'm guessing you will only need one joystick and one button for each player.
I can't wait to see your build.
edit: from the description on joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/lovers-in-a-dangerous-spacetime-preview-dont-die-alone/) it seems it requires two buttons per player and analog joysticks. :-\
edit2: it will support keyboard-only controls, so regular arcade joysticks is an option with an encoder.
-
Really cool game ! Love it too ! ;D
A cabinet for this would be sweet !
-
That's a cool game. I'm watching with interest. I can't wait to see your artwork/take on this.

Not sure about the control panel and marquee yet, but something like this for the sideart

I was expecting something more round for the top of the cabinet. ;)
Here's an idea: make the cabinet the same shape as the "superlaser" control in the game. :D
As for the side art, if you don't want to show the spaceship in a fight with enemies, it's at least missing planets and stuff in the background. Do you have access to the artwork? Maybe you could ask the authors.
For the marquee, I would use the space background with stars and planets and orbits with the simple text logo and integrate the "Asteroid Base" logo somewhere into the marquee, using commercial marquees as templates.
You should check the trailer again, the spaceship is not pink-only like on your side art, maybe it was pink-only a few months ago in the game?
-
Do you have access to the artwork? Maybe you could ask the authors.
Yes, I talked to the authors and I have access to the artwork. More about that later...
The side art is actually more cartoonish and is from a promotional poster and there are enemy ships coming from the clouds below. There will be some planets, enemies, etc. on the control panel and on the marquee, but like any other arcade cabinet, no "screendumps" from the game.

Cool, I can't wait to see your progress especially since you have access to the original artwork. I like the idea about the clouds, kind of a preview of what awaits you if you play the game.
I haven't played the game though, I've only seen the video, but there seems to only be two types of enemies?
-
Looks suspiciously like an Asteroids Deluxe cabinet. Me likey.
Following.

That game looks cool. It reminds me of an iOS game called Crumble Zone. Do you have beta access? I looked for a download link but couldn't find one.

I don't have beta access. I'm not even sure there is a beta yet. The game will come out this year, no date yet...

That sort of was the point... ;)

So far I've seen 4 enemies, the ships that lay mines, the monster with the big teeth, the ships with the lasers and the robots on the planet. There's probably a lot more, but we'll have to wait until the game is released.
Here's another video, showing some of the gameplay:

Thanks for the link, after watching that video I realize this game has much more depth than what is shown in the trailer. They should have shown the players trying to save a planet, not just flying around shooting at two types of enemies.

Quick update on the graphics for the control panel:

You probably haven't been under a rock. The game is new. As a matter of fact it's not even released yet.
-
The game is new. As a matter of fact it's not even released yet.
That's right. The game should be out sometime this year. But I think it's a perfect game for an arcade cabinet. They even have a special arcade edition of the game (which is being demoed at several trade show, like E3 and GDC).
I've spoken about the arcade cabinet with one of the dvelopers/artists and he said "That sounds amazing, and we're totally flattered. That would basically be our dream gameplay scenario for Lovers". So closer to the release date they will provide some more high resolution artwork to use on the cabinet.
In the mean time, I'm getting started on the construction part of the cabinet. And I got these yesterday...I really like the pink mini buttons...
-
Man this is turning out great! Cool that the devs are flattered by it- LIADST is probably my most-anticipated game this year.
-
Working on some artwork for the game. I'm trying to get a more retro look.

I'm getting a headache trying to imagine this game in 3D, for both inside and outside the ship. :dizzy:
-
Cabinet is coming along nicely. I cut the side panels yesterday and today I started on the rest of the cabinet.

Nice progress ! I'm definitely watching this because of the game and the shape of the cab both ! :applaud:

Working on an instruction sheet for the game...suggestions and comment are welcome
(http://www.xs4all.nl/~hansolo1/instruction.jpg)
-
This is shaping up great, the cabinet looks fantastic and the game does look perfect for a cab.
How do you know you will be able to control the game with your panel, what if you need mouse input for menus? keyboard for entering your name in a hiscore table? f1 to start a game..
Do you know the developers or something?
-
Working on an instruction sheet for the game...suggestions and comment are welcome
(http://www.xs4all.nl/~hansolo1/instruction.jpg)
There's too much horizontal margin between the numbers and their description and/or not enough space vertically between each bullet.
The text is missing an "s" for point 4?
4. Destroy enemy spacecrafts.
I think it would read better if you had the graphic after the text for point 5:
5. Find occupied planets (graphic)
and save the inhabitants.
-
The text is missing an "s" for point 4?
4. Destroy enemy spacecrafts.
Spacecraft is commonly used as a plural as well as singular.

5. Find occupied planets (graphic)
and save the inhabitants.
Good suggestion.
Possible alternate version:
5. Save the inhabitants
of occupied planets. (graphic)
Possible alternate version for #7:
7. Liberate planets for upgrades.
Also consider rewording the directions to fit each point on a single line, increasing the space between lines slightly, and using bullets instead of numbers.
Scott
-
Since the planets are under attack and facing annihilation, wouldn't "save the planets" fit better? "Liberate" sounds like they're run by an oppressive regime. ;)
-
Great suggestions, i'm going to put them in the next artwork update

The planets are occupied and you have to destroy the robots to free the rabbits.
Do you know the developers or something?
Yes, i'm getting information from one of the developers. So i know the control scheme for the game.
-
Better version of the side art, kickplate and cp...still thinking about a better marquee...

I would do a marquee with the two players characters instead. Something similar to the introduction where they're side by side and there's a big heart explosion behind them.

Yeah, the screen 0:19s in the video looks great as marquee.

Great idea! I'll contact the developers and see if they have it in a higher res.
-
Project is looking great, I'm excited about this game, looks like a ton of fun!
-
This is amazing!, both the cabinet ideas, art and the game, it really makes me want to do a cab too, too many projects!!!
-
The cabinet art looks beautiful except for that font, it just doesn't fit at all in IMHO. How can you go wrong with pink T-Molding though ;D
-
The font is plain, but looks like it is the font they used in the video... Hitchhiker font (harlow) would have been cool.. This is one cool looking cab, can't wait to watch this one...

The font used in the artwork is Toronto Subway and the developers are Toronto based, so I guess that's probably the reason.

Looks awesome! :applaud:

Finally decided on the sideart. Still working on the marquee. I hope to finish this cabinet before september, so I can bring it to Eurocade.

That's IT, I'm building one of these!, I've been anxiously anticipating the game release, I check it every week. Sjaak, I may be hitting you up soon... are you using an asteroids deluxe cabinet? or did you go with different dimensions?, it seems like it needs to be a bit wider for 2 players, or maybe do a player one on one side, and player 2 on the other side of the cab?
anyway, very cool build, I really want one, i hope the game is epic!

I'm not actually using a asteroids deluxe cabinet, but I'm building a new cabinet with the same dimensions. I could be wider, but I like the idea of the 2 players standing close together, because you have to communicate a lot.
I've played the game and without constant communication it's impossible to play. I will be making a slight adjustment to the control panel, because you can play the game with 1 person, but you need an extra button to control the second player.

Just curious, have you played on an asteroids deluxe cab? I have an AD and the cab play area is so small, I don't know how 2 people can comfortably play a heated battle game being right on top of each other?!? I don't mean to or even want to break what you are going to pursue here, because I really love the design :applaud:... but I really feel If I build this cab, I'm going to have to make the cab wider and make some of the metal pieces by hand, and make the control panel out of wood rather than mod an AD metal one, it's just that the cab is just so small, I really feel the comfort level is going to suffer :banghead:
do you have an amendment on the control panel to show us possibly for the extra button?
-
Narrow all the way, only way to do that cabinet. If the two players aren't jostling eachother the game won't be right, the idea is to be reliant on another person. You're both playing one game, it should be a bit cramped. Love the new side art btw, can't wait to play this thing!
-
I guess I get it now, LOVERS in a Dangerously uncomfortable kill the bad guys together while grabbing ass! LOL , maybe I need to start the build as you did, and convince my wife to play with me, I mean play the game with me :)
hopefully I'll actually get to play it soon, just watching the vids of old is getting old :)
awesome sauce, sjaak, I need that art! Ill wait til the game comes out to start on my cab, and let you have the glory till then :) :notworthy:
-
I chose this cabinet for a couple of reasons. First I had to be a tribute to the original game, because Lovers is of course based on asteroids. Second reason is that I like the closed and confined space.
I'm sure it's not the perfect width and if someone wanted to build a wider cabinet, I could totally understand.
I've played the game with my wife (on a big screen) and you have to be very comfortable with the other person, because there is a lot of shouting and ordering around. So standing in a cramped space shouldn't be a problem (I hope :))
And when playing on your own, the cabinet is just fine of course. The addition to the control panel is an extra button for player 1. If you press that, you can send player 2 (your loyal space pet) to a turret, shield or super laser using the joystick.
-

seems they're touring the UK a little with the game, I guess they're trying to build buzz, Im really anxious to play it soon, it was supposed to be released last year, but they discovered its a bigger game so they continue to develop it, it will be awesome!
-
Sjaak, this is my favorite build of yours... and for context, I think your other builds are awesome. As a wannabe game designer I'm interested in what kind of interaction you have had with the game devs about the cabinet- have they been helpful? What do they think?

I've had contact with one of the developers. They were really amazed and told me that a real cabinet was their dream gameplay scenario. I've discussed some of the gameplay, mostly the control scheme, because that determines the way the control panel will be configured.
They were really helpfull and have provided me with some high res artwork. For the big event (Eurocade) in september I will have a build of the game to run on the cabinet.
-
This looks FANTASTIC.
I'm very excited to play a demo - those YouTube videos are too much of a tease. =)
The *only* thing that throws me off is the off-centered marquee. Maybe it'll grow on me......
-
About the marquee, I really think you should use the Toronto Subway font, this "3D effect" title doesn't fit with the style of the game (2D side view) nor the rest of the artwork. :dunno
-
Great job on the side art and marquee I think it came out great!

The font is actually Toronto Subway, but I wanted a similar look to the Asteroids Deluxe cabinet which is also off centered. I don't think it's possible to get the actual logo of the game on a marquee, but suggestions are always welcome

I think the l logo is cool, I think it needs some tweaking, the letters need to be squished up and fattened a little, and I think it needs a little perspective is all :)
I can take a crack at it if you'd like, but I'll need to take a look at the photoshop file :)

College of mine was also at the Eurocade, and when I talked about your project, he did tell me that he was very exited about your project.
Always good to see and hear about other people who love the Arcade scene also.

Gorgeous work on this build. I haven't tried this game but I really want to play it on that machine!

This is a seriously rad build. The edges of the side art are a very nice touch. Kinda reminds me of burned film edges.
I've never heard of this game until now. This build makes me want to check it out.

I admit. I caved in and pre-ordered it yesterday. I watched the trailer and changed my mind. Can't wait!

I was on my way to go and pick it up and the guy emailed me saying "the renters downstairs came up and gave me cash for it". I replied and was like "Ask them if they'd like a little cash over what they paid for it", but he said they weren't currently interested.
I had a Simpsons fall through on me today right after as well. I hate Kijiji.

Awesome cabinet for an awesome game! Any plans to release the cabinet artwork? Would love to build one similar to yours.

Game releases tomorrow, 9/9/15! :applaud:

Tried it today. The price on Steam is the same as pre-ordered price by the way.
Great game so far. It also allows you to play with 2 players on the same keyboard so it's Arcade friendly. You do have to hit enter to bypass the Home screen though.
Also the lowest selectable resolution is 640x480 so it should support arcade monitors. It even formats it to 4:3 if needed.

Ooooo, that's exciting. I wonder how it would look on a 27" or 25" CRT? Hmmm I need to get u those fixed. And soon

I'll let you know. I tried it on my widescreen PC but I need to load her up on my arcade with my 27" Betson.

I smell a new instalment of your YouTube videos...

I think this is a great idea for a build.
I just came across this game the other day and I think it's a great idea for a game in general.
It seems like the simple arcade play is coming back in a lot of these newer games.
I still keep knocking around the idea of building a cabinet based on the classic Jumpman game.
Dude, I LOVE Jumpman. I still break it out and play it. I had the PC version for awhile but I usually just play the C64 emulation. I still have the original (bootlegged, haha) 5.25" floppy for my Commodore 64(which I still have) in a closet upstairs. The only problem I've encountered with arcade emulation is needing to set the run speed at the very beginning of play. Whether you want the game to run faster or slower than the default(I always play on a 2). Anyway, if you decide to do this, I'd love to see the result and maybe even help with some art or just give my opinion as a lover of this game. Long live Jumpman!
Sorry, jumped on an old comment there before I went to the end of this thread. WOW! Awesome work on the Lovers cab. Great job!

Having downloaded this game and played a little, my already significant appreciation for this cabinet has increased further. I'd love one just like it

DL'd and played through the tut last night, the controls on a qwerty are awkward - at least with the default layout. Kept thinking that the game really needed a spinner. You only need the joy (far as I can tell) to move about the ship - which seems like poor design since everything else is rotational based. Probably a rotary joy instead of a spinner would be the way to go. Need to play with the settings and see what's feasible but, while the game is gorgeous, my initial reaction is that they missed the boat on some simple game play mechanics that could have reduced the learning curve and made the game more initially accessible.
My initial though was, "this is just silly, why can I move my space pet around the ship faster and more better than I can move myself?" I'm not playing to climb ladders and ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow---, I'm playing to kill aliens, so rather than press "B" to back out of a station why not press "B" to select station, use the spinner to chose, send your little guy off, same way as you do the pet with "N" and call it a day. Boom, eliminated the joystick and really simplified the controls in my opinion.

I think the choice to move around the ship using a joystick was intentional, to add a platform feel to the game and to make it a bit more diffcult. But it's true, the cat (or dog) moves a lot faster than you do.
I like the way it is designed and it really works when playing with two people.

Which joystick model did you use?
After playing the game, it seems analog is preferred by the game mechanics, but maybe an 8 way would give decent control?

Any 8 way joystick should be fine. I used a zippyy.

I get that, I just think that element of difficulty is misguided. If the designers check in here I'd say that adding an option to direct the main player like the space pet would be a great gameplay addition, ditto spinner/scroll wheel support for aiming/station selection. The only other thing they'd need to do is add the steering station into the selectable list for the primary player. With a spinner it'd be easy to just rotate around until the station you need is highlighted. Boom, flawless control integration and eliminates what in my opinion, is a poorly executed portion of the gameplay...but optional for the "purists" that love those damn ladders.
-
I think those ladders adds to the difficulty of the game, because of the frantic movements you have to be involved in while switching from turret to shield to thruster, yes the ladders are frustrating, but necessary for the challenge I believe

Awesome work!
There's a game I love that is modern, but made with love for arcade classics. It's on the 3DS and Wii U call Whoa Dave! I thought it would also make a great cabinet.

I am really enjoying this game. I just played through the tutorial on my desktop computer and using the keyboard would take some getting used to. That said, I think it will be a lot of fun with 2 players running on an arcade cabinet.
I think that the cat moves around faster because it is supposed to simulate player 2. A real player 2 would just go wherever needed and wouldn't distract player 1 from their current role like the cat does for selection of next station so maybe they speed the cat up to make up for that difference. Speeding the cat up would keep the pace of the game the same with or without a real player 2. Just a thought.

Yeah. Works with keyboard, joystick and Xbox 360 without issues. This is how all games should be.
Fired it up on my machine yesterday. Looks great (4:3) on a 27" monitor!

-
Oooo, me like. :)
-
I don't like this machine... I Love it .. It looks factory made . Just awesome. Its making me think twice about my cabinet Idea.
-
I was wondering how well this plays with a 4way joystick (or keypad)?
Watching the gameplay videos, it looks like each player is controlling one item at a time: engine, gun, shield, etc. And each item spins around the ship. I imagine that would be hard to do accurately with a keypad. Wouldn't it be easier if each player had a spinner. I guess the original game doesn't support any kind of analog control, but it seems like it should.

I wish Netherrealm (or whoever did the PC MKX port) would take notes on this. So nice.

Wow this cabinet turnout awesome!!!!..Hows the game play on a cabinet?
-
Great cabinet!
I just picked up the game for 10$ on Steam.
Unfortunately, the joystick config doesn't seem to want to play well with my cabinet. It seems extremely sensitive when I map the sticks to players.
I did some poking around and the config seems to all be in a json format DAT file.
Anyone know of any specifics about how to configure this game beyond the basic settings UI?
I see in the json some settings for "dead" etc, that you can't set via the UI.
I'm thinking that might help my situation.
Or maybe you just setup joytokey and go that route?
-
Just curious, what joystick and what encoder or hacked pad are you using?
-
My cab has a couple of Ultrastick 360's for p1 and p2.
All the buttons are keys run through an IPAC4
The button assignments work fine, it's just the sticks that I'm having a problem with.
The issue is that I get "input" from a stick even when it's centered. I've used some stick diag utilities to check the sticks, calibrated them, etc. They're both not "exactly" centered when centered (the readings might be 32750 instead of 32768), but they're pretty close. And they work fine in Mame. That's why I'm thinking it's just a dead zone issue in Lovers.
And, alas, Lovers also seems to suffer from the "stick moving" problem that ControllerRemap solves for mame.
But that's an issue for another day

The concept for the original Lovers game and the idea of putting it in a cabinet were both really innovative and well executed.
This week, I was glad to discover the game is available in the Nintendo Switch store for $15 as a 1-4p couch co-op game. It's great to see the devs are still supporting this title. Checking their website, they even have nice tech blog posts discussing some of the work in Unity.
I tried the game on the PC 2 years ago, but thought the gameplay was too difficult with 1 player. But yesterday, I got my family into a 4P game, and it was great! On the "Casual" play setting, my family, with virtually no shmup experience were able to come up to speed by the end of the tutorial, and have fun. It's much less frustrating to man 8 stations with 4 players.
Although I'd give it a 5/5, my main complaint is that it still takes too much mental energy to control your character inside the ship. I'd much rather just select the next station and click GO (like directing one of the pets) rather than have to spend 10 seconds focused inside the ship to accurately walk around corridors and ladders each time I change stations.
