Title: Mortal kombat 2 no sound, located in AZ
Post by: tealsnk on August 21, 2019, 08:32:26 am
Just picked a mortal kombat 2 arcade cab last night for a great price, but there is no sound. Not even when I first turn it on do hear that loud initial tone. I double checked the ribbon to make sure the red matches up with pin 1 on the main board and sound board. Sound board lights up too. I turned up the volume to max and nothing. I attached a picture of the sound test menu results. I know youtuber yourMKarcadesource is a master with these. I watched his videos to see if I could figure it out, however I'm not comfortable or knowledgeable to tinker with either boards. Hopefully someone can chime in or reccomend someone that might be able to help on here or near me. Iive in Arizona, so maybe someone nearby that does repairs on Arcades. Thanks!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190821/e8eee47cfb551ab48097d73004a690c3.jpg)

We’ll be having a repair party in October if you want to bring the board set. Sign up for the forums at www.arcaderestoration.com. There’s an AZ locals board there.

Thank you for letting me know of that forum, I already registered and logged in. I found the AZ section and added as one of my favorites.
I'm still trying to figure out how to navigate it. I wanted to introduce myself in the AZ section.

You have to be approved before you can see the AZ subforum, if I remember right.

Also check out the actual sound hardware in the cab man. Make sure your wiring is all looking good there and not messed up in some way (like disconnected, speaker missing, etc).

I traced any and all harnesses or wires that went to the speakers and sound board already. The speakers are there and I removed the speaker cover and everything is connected, nothing looks burned out or dark. However, I'll check again. The wiring in there is all organized neat and with zipties. It's not all hacked up in there like another cab I bought before. Thanks!

I checked voltage at power supply box. For 12v it was at 13.45v, +5v was at 5.00v exactly and -5v was at 4.75v. Do these seem in reasonable range.

Here’s a thought - does the sound card have an additional volume pot attached to it via a connector? I know the original game and similar Midway games from the era, like NBA JAM, require it.

There is volume pot near the coin door next to the test button and credits button. It does the same vol adjustments as the test menu.
On the sound board itself, it doesn't have a volume pot. However the monitor does have an adjustment pot and checked it too just in case it had a volume adjustment on it. I also checked the speaker connections up at the marquee area and everything is connected nice and tight.

Love how he posts a picture showing his sound board is failing tests and you clowns are telling him to jiggle volume pots and check speaker wires.

Pop the chips out of your sound board, clean the legs, clean the sockets, put them back in.

Jimmah, that photo doesn’t show any errors, knucklehead. It tells him to LISTEN for errors. Goofball.

I confirmed that MK2 doesn’t have a separate sound pot like MK1 does. Look at this photo, do you have all the same cables?

Yeah, my main board and sound look exactly like that.

Do you have access to another JAMMA cabinet? What part of town are you in?

I don't, I'm in queen creek. East Valley area. One of my friends already suggested that I throw an emulator, lcd in there and call it a day.(I almost kicked him in the head) I want to keep it original with the pcb fully intact. That's the whole point of getting a full size cab with crt monitor.

PBJ isn't wrong, a bad/dirty socket/pins is a common problem, As is a bad cap, paticularly that big one by the input (beings how there is no sound at all) Why you guys  refuse to ever mention scopes or ESR after all these years of messing with those old boards just baffles me...Jennifer so needs a new crowd.

This is available at my local Walmart, I could pick this up later today and use it to clean the prongs on the eproms with this. It's called tarn-x. Thoughts? (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190823/456ef12dd93440cdbcd879ae076d72ea.jpg)

Go to the automotive section and buy wiring harness spray.

PBJ happened to be not wrong and wrong  :P

The screen the op showed is the test screen that requires the user to hear tones to then troubleshoot further. Unfortunately he has no tones, hence the check hardware. He could absolutely end up with chip/trace/board issues once he gets some semblance of sound working.

Yots is on the right path. MK1 had the sound pot, but mk2 doesnt. Another board would be helpful here to test the speakers/jamma harness.

For voltages, these types of boards can certainly be sensitive to variations, but that usually prevents booting in my experience.

Found this in my garage cabinet with all my other chemicals. Maybe this will work. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190823/c2607e92a0a808f9351967e072a7d885.jpg)

Yes that will work, it is a solvent so remember to let it dry before applying voltage. The sockets should be replaced, but at this point find the problem first before just throwing in new parts.

Ok, I'll definitely keep that in mind. When you say to replace the "sockets", are you referring to eprom chips?

Generally speaking yes, Given the boards age...However be quite sure of your skills if you are to touch a iron to it because as a core it would be considered junk if less then perfect...Eldorado games (and others) are usually quite reasonable if you were to send it in.

Just clean and reseat the chips first.

I'd also consider the onboard amp being bad.

I'm cleaning the sound chips today. The sound board amp's heatsink gets warm, not crazy hot and not dead cold, which I've read dead cold means a dead amp. I attached the picture and circled where from my understanding the amp is located on the sound board. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190823/30efcf92f4e4b548c88768e70ee89d91.jpg)

Based on my description of amp temperature, it should be fine I take it?

The answer is NO, Whoever told you that fairy tale should be poked in the eye, Temp is not a constant and would very from board to board and with the efficiency of the circuit/ heat sink. At best it would only suggest it is not drawing any current to generate any noticeable amount of heat, again determinate of the circuit...What you got there is a simple amp circuit made a bit more complex with speech ROMS, and it is in need of diagnostics, just going in and replacing stuff without the proper equipment might fix it temporarily or be a money pit even on such a small board chasing the same problem all over the place.

I went ahead and cleaned the chips and nothing changed. I also took pictures of the sound board backside. Now I noticed that there one very small section that looks slightly darker. See pictures below I circled them. I flipped it over and it goes to c35.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190824/e2204d4389fd730998cba9253da155b1.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190824/6a2ab30eb459f9ca778563d6d63d233c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190824/295fe4588b9346640347764c52d882e7.jpg)

Clearly there’s been some work done to the board. However, it’s too bad that you don’t have a another JAMMA boards you could rule out the cabinet.

Dude I hope you can solder, because that area left of what you circled is most likely your problem...That is butchered, and most likely went cold...It has to be desolderd, and resoldered without  dumping any more heat torture into those traces....Or they will just delamanate from the board.

I've never really soldered, only a car stereo small connection here and there. Maybe I should replace the amp while I'm at it too, if its going to get re-soldered. The dark area is where the amp is at with the heat sink. I tried looking up the amp part number on the manual and on the chip itself and can't find it. I might just remove the sound board, order new amp and take it to a local computer shop to solder new amp in. I don't know of any local reputable arcade repair guys out here in AZ since I'm new to the hobby.

For now that dark spot is not your worry, they do that with age, Learning to solder is...I would seriously take Yots up on that work camp and watch him solder (wouldn't hurt to bring new caps and sockets)...or call these guys   http://eldoradogames.com/

Getting a bunch of good advice already man. Learning to solder is a totally worthwhile undertaking in this hobby. Also grab a cheapo working jamma board from ebay/here/klov/wherever for testing. If you stay in the hobby you will want one.
