...or does the sound not work in Space Invaders? It works in DX but not the "originals", I've just learned some new (to me anyway) tricks to increase my highscore, but I need that heartbeat - any offers?

Yes they are separate for some games. Get your samples here (http://www.mame.net/downsamples.html) and toss them into your "samples" folder.
