Title: Petite LED Cocktail
Post by: CoryBee on June 01, 2013, 08:38:38 pm
Had an itch to make a mini cocktail after going over JKDubb's UCA Winning build (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,118776.0.html) and saw these. Made me a bit "gitty" inside and had to attempt a working mini cocktail.

(http://i.imgur.com/Bany4.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/svrLY.jpg)

I am going for a more traditional look for the cocktail, a bit like the full size cocktail build (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,132212.0.html) I just finished (but itsy bitsy).

Hardware

I wanted to keep the cost down so I ordered a used "Samsung SCH-R880" instead of what I have seen most minis made out of (Dingoo, GBA, etc). They may be easier to configure but I knew I could bend android to my will  >:D . I was originally going to hack a bluetooth keyboard up to whatever cell phone I purchased but then realized that I could get a cell phone with a slide out keyboard and hack that.

(http://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/CoryDee/IMG_5408_zps7d3c1652.jpg) (http://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/CoryDee/IMG_5410_zpsd15f88a3.jpg)

Joysticks will be these (http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en?WT.z_header=search_go&lang=en&site=us&keywords=GH7455-ND&x=0&y=0) (haven't came in yet). Part number GH7455-ND on digi-key.

For the buttons I went with these. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/350655485877?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649) They are the perfect size and there is a similar model that is lit up with LEDs that I could not find. I am going to open them and hack in an SMD LED. There is space just for them in it (perfect!).

Pac-Man (With cocktail flipping!)

Software\Apps

Firstly I rooted the device, this is useful for a ton of reasons regardless of using it for an arcade.

I was going to write a custom rom image for it (and still might) but wanted to see if I can do it with just rooting it and messing with apps as the first would be phone specific.

Here is a list of apps needed to basically shell the front end

Will post another update\more information soon after I finish some regular work.

Another micro build added to my watch list!

Somewhere at Digi-Key, somebody is asking "What's up with part number GH7455-ND? We sold more in the last few months than in the last decade!"

P.S.: for the buttons, had you seen these (http://www.ebay.com/itm/321026919666)?

Been busy with the cabaret trifecta to post an update.

One of the main reasons I wanted to get root level access was so I can save the Mame4Droid files and the roms on the phones memory so I don't waste one of my SD Cards for such little space. There will be probably 10 - 20 games on it I think.

Build pictures

The top panel of the cabinet will be roughly 6 inches in length. And the base about 5 1\2 inches.

The top will also be two pieces of the thin MDF I got

Base cabinet pictures - the little pieces to the right are the supports

Assemble

Figuring out the dimensions for the top panel - It is a pain to do the math for such small measurements

Using the same technique I used on my full size cocktail build (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,132212.msg1357729.html#msg1357729) to cut the screen section out

The flush trim bit on the router is obviously too big for the job so I improvised and used my new dremel to follow the guides. Adjusted it so it sits just on the empty part of the bit.

Voilla!

Cleaned up the edges with the jigsaw's smallest blade and did some more measurements

Now you're just showing off.  ;D

Awesome stuff man. I hope to make a micro cab one of these days. Keepin' my eye out for an Advance SP of craigslist.

What he said!  Good show Cory, will be watching.

Thanks fellas, got a little bit further and will post some more pictures. Resizing it a bit as I think the base should be a little bit shorter.

Doing the little control panels will be a blast for sure!

Cory, looking forward to see how this turns out.  I will be making a mirco cocktail joust sometime in the near future.  Good luck.

Stripping the phone of its pretty shell

Screen and main=board separated (but not without issue......)

I wasn't careful enough while removing this metal shield (the main slider assembly) and tore part of the ribbon cable.... My heart dropped.  :banghead:

I powered the phone on hoping to see the screen and voilla! It turned on.....Unfortunately I lost all use of the touch screen and home buttons. But the screen still worked which is enough for me as I have the keyboard which is plenty to navigate the phone and finish shelling MAME.

Ripped cable

Tape to keep it from tearing any further

Anyways, back to the fun.

LCD screen removed (very carefully) from the touch digitizer glass

Thanks for looking!

I think one way of officially differentiating between a mini-cab and a micro-cab would be those GH7455-ND joysticks. If a cabinet uses them or something as small as those, it's a micro.  ;)

Itsy bitsy teeny weenie control panel thingy

Everything will get a good sanding with a high grit before paint is applied

Holes drilled

Fits snuggly

Since I am under-mounting the joysticks I need to "route" out some space so it is more flush - This was accomplished with an exacto-knife

After tracing all CP parts for player two it is time for assembly

Voilla!

Here you an see where one of the buttons had been converted to LED via SMD parts (more on this, and pictures,  later)

Not sure why you aligned the joystick with the top of the buttons instead of the bottom.   :dunno

Won't the vertical side block a 2-finger-grip on the stick?

I'm betting it's going to be a thumb on top of the stick "grip".

Scott

I'm guessing that bottom alignment would put the body of the base of the stick pocking out a mm or more past the face of the CP and raising the buttons would not be a good solution either.  Increasing the size of the whole attachment would solve the problem but create others in terms of scale.

You nailed it -- checked one with the micrometer and it's closer to the front edge than I originally thought.

Micrometer? :dizzy: Or did you mean calipers?

6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other.  Mine look like this.
Use whichever term you prefer.

When I read "calipers", I think of these.

They're good for some measurements, but not for .001" accuracy.

Perfect ^^

You will hold it with one hand on each side played by your thumbs mostly.

Just like my full size cocktail the controls are a bit inside the machine and tilted at an angle. This one will almost look exactly the same, just tiny.

Wait, so you held a ruler up to the screen? :lol

Pretty much.  I used ratio comparison (handle diameter:shaft to edge distance) and also a foreground-miniature technique (photo on screen, hold the joystick up so it appears to be the same size/orientation) -- the usual photo-interpreter-type tricks to double-check.

Both methods work great on a 46" TV.

You might be able to use some metal mirror clips like these (http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?partNumber=337199-37672-121154&langId=-1&storeId=10151&productId=3306430&catalogId=10051&cmRelshp=rel&rel=nofollow&cId=PDIO1) or these (http://www.lowes.com/pd_197437-405-50445_0__?productId=1056919&Ntt=mirror+clips&pl=1&currentURL=%3FNtt%3Dmirror%2Bclips&facetInfo=) that precisely fit your acrylic.

get a cheapo jeweler's saw and you can cut them out yourself in no time.  It's super easy and the blades come in packs of a gross so you can break tons while you figure out the smooth motion required to glide through the metal.

Jewelry Saw Cutting Demo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZyC_q69yus#)

What I used to make the SW micro yoke.  15 minutes to crank out those tabs max.  Give it a shot.

The project is on hold until my replacement phone comes in. Unfortunately I teared the ribbon cable more. Not sure how it happened as I tested it before I put it in the parts drawer and hadn't touched it until I hooked it up recently. Anywho, should be here tomorrow or so.

Thanks for the suggestions on securing the acrylic. Still not sure what I should do yet....

Figured I would throw an update out there, Louis Tully and I started our micro builds at the same time and he is currently blowing me out of the water.

I got another cell phone, exact same model so I can just use the already modified mainboard with the new assembly and screen. I went the smart way this time though and found one with a broken digitizer (touch screen glass) as the actual screen is in perfect condition when removed. $8 shipped

Here is the LED modification I did to the buttons.

Using SMD LEDs from a piece of 5m light strip acquired from ebay.

Cap of the push-button is easily removed and the strip trimmed down

I keep the strip in tact as it is easy to overhead the SMDs with the soldering iron. The pads act as a heat sink, and it also makes it easier on me because SMDs are a pain as you all may know.

Rest of the pad trimmed and the resistor flipped to the other side

I drill a small hole for the wires to exit the button, insert the LED with a small bit of hot glue to keep it in place.

Test of the LED, perfect!  ;D

All four are wired to a custom little pad that is turned on an off by a switch on the back of the cocktail. I got a bunch of the control wiring done as well, running out of space though. These little things are something else, takes a ton of patience to get stuff right.

Thanks for watching.

Saw luis tullys update on how he messed up....figured I would tell of mine (not as bad or pricey though)

Ruined one ribbon cable at the onset, got a new phone had everything working and was getting ready to wrap things up. Told of this.

Then.....

It happened again, which means I had to get a new phone. I got up and something tugged on the power cord I made and the thing fell to the ground.....no worried I caught it before it hit.....but I caught it by the top half and ripped the ribbon cable in half....again.

Have been frustrated with it so I just said F$@$@# it for a little while. Thinking about buying a new screen now though, the thing already had everything wired up, LEDs and painted. I rolled out 5 big arcades and 2 small ones in the time I have been messing with this Petite one.

You are not alone Tully.

Oh no! Not you too?!?  I was wondering about this project.

I got great deals on those DS's. One for $40 and the other for $30. So, it's not as bad as it could have been. But I was right there with you on the "F$@$@# it for a little while" mindset. But, like you, having done so much with the cabinet, it's hard to throw in the towel now. We'll get there.

Eventually.....yes.....

Contemplating getting another phone, I might go with a different model this time though. Too cute of a machine to not finish it.

Thanks matt. It has been stressful, but all this work has to amount to something so I am going to get another phone for it.

Good work Cory.
I dont see how you and Tulley do these micro projects. My eyeballs would be falling out after a while, not to mention my fingers getting all tangled up.

It definitely takes patients and a steady hand.

Even though it will cost me some more and it is frustrating, I still have to finish it. At least for the fact that it will be the first Micro Cocktail (unless someone made one before....)

Why didn't you just use one of those cheap 4.3" (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Archos-43-16GB-Wi-Fi-4-3in-Black-Android-tablet-/171096971698?pt=US_Tablets&hash=item27d62c99b2) android tablets and wire it up to a KADE?

Seems like a lot of trouble in the wiring department.

You might want to reinforce that 4mm MDF CP with some plexi.  ;D

4.3" is too big for this cocktail

Also, this guy is perdy sturdy already no need for reinforcing

Nice size sheet of really thin MDF - $4

2 Digikey Micro Joysticks - $30

Cell phone with pull out qwerty keyboard and cracked digitizer - $10 (assuming you don't have to buy three)

These buttons about 6 of them in the order - $6

Random bits of wire, dc jack, usb cord - like $5 at the most

And last but not least, having patience (lots of it) and not having sausage fingers - Priceless

Total = Roughly $50 - $60

The phone I bought did not have a pull out keyboard (even though it mentioned that it did in the ad)

So I order another, going to try and get it finished before I go on vacation so I have something to play.

I'm in Ireland Ricky.

I was thinking about building an arcade while here but not sure how much extra work it will be having to go to a "Men's Shed" or Hackerspace to get the job done as i'm in a flat here in Dublin.

Hey, do you know Shawn? He lives in Ireland! Goes by the YouTube name "JackSepticEye".

(Sorry - had to do it. I'm still surprised at the number of times I've talked with people who don't live in Canada, and they ask me questions like that. Like a year or so ago, talked with someone who asked me if I knew their friend Bill, from Vancouver. Dude. I'm in Ontario, that's more than a stone's throw, ya know?)

Hackerspace sounds cool. "Men's Shed" sounds like a bath house. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, if that's what you're in to.)

No, but I have chatted with Paul Chato from The Frantics on a couple of occasions. I also met Billy Van from 'The Hilarious House of Frightenstein' (and Bits & Bytes) once. Oh, and my Wife's best friend's brother is in Sum 41.

That count?

:D

Had some free time lately for some projects. Thought I would use my newly acquired 3D skills and 3D printer to get to it.

The old one was in pretty bad shape, following me along so many moves (several different countries), always telling myself I would get to it one day. I used that as the base for my measurements for the design.

I used a raspi this time around with retropie. I also used an Xin-Mo Controller interface. Audio I used a cheap $3 thing from ebay that is one of those portable ones. For power I put one of those cheap power banks inside and ported the charge port to the side of the cocktail.

All in all very glad it is done!
