Title: Scratch Slim Marvel vs Capcom [14 Nov - Finished]
Post by: Martijn on June 28, 2011, 10:04:09 am
Why?

Why did i sell my old cab?

I miss throwing coins in her , that sound is priceless.  But she had flaws, i didn't like the u360 and her size was just to big.
It needs to be living room proof! And i miss HD gfx games and remakes of old games. the TV didn't cut it.
Replacing it with a LCD would kill her. So she is happy at a new owner now.

After almost 3 years i decided i want a new one. Slim sized, Arcade feel, LCD screen.

LCD with the scan line modes in Mame + tinted plexi and a few beers would fool me anyway  ;)

My holiday is coming and i have some time to spend on it.

I got some sketches on paper, already drew it out in sketch-up and got most of the artwork ideas and design going.

My new one will be similar to my old one, just half its dept. This time no Street Fighter Arcade theme.

But going for the Marvel vs Capcom theme. Based on the latest version 3 characters

Some basic info
Screen : LG 32" 32LD320
Sound : 5.1 Cambridge DTT3500 Digital Black Logitech Z-2300
System : Playstation 3 Slim with large hdd Custom firmware 3.55 Jtagged Xbox 360
Storage : 2 TB Samsung hdd 5400 RPM SATA 32MB
Sticks : 2 x Sanwa JLF-TP-8YT

I have been buying parts and indexing my old parts, materials and tools.
Found a place where i could work , my balcony is a no go this time..

Just my heads up

Got some sheets of 18mm mdf for starters ;)

And got my sticks for the ps3, they also work on pc and ps2 , i used them before, and no lag in the pcb.
Also it has some extra features i could use like, analog to digital stick and turbo functions

The stick
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-c7EY-Ua797k/TgrMe7t5GiI/AAAAAAAAABQ/XKO_1xgrL1U/DSC02487.JPG)

I will only use the pcb from the sticks

Pcb from the stick

The soldering could be better on some points, ill touch them up.

The analog to digital button is kinda complex, i hoped for easy replacement.
It has 18 soldering points, gonna probe them to see what they do.

you want/need a MvC marquee?
Title: Re: Scratch Slim Marvel vs Capcom [Collecting Parts + mockup]

Thnx, but i will try and make something myself.

total width cab : 84cm
total dept cab : 56cm
total height cab : 187cm

Question : What angle degree do monitors/lcd go? I have it about 15-20 degree now, i tried this setup at a table with control heights and its good

not digging the round edge. angle generally look better imo. change your design. sideart looks good but you wanna consider a different background. you already made a "yellow-ish" cabinet before.

Why not build a sitdown cabinet?

Nice art work i like the top Its different, and flows with the slim shape of the cabinet.
Are you vectoring your raster characters? or jjust leaving everything one gaint raster?

Nope, yellow lovely round curves , standup cab it will be ;)

Sketch-up isn't really giving me the shape i want, just wait until woodworking commences

As for the art, ill try and get the best out of it.

And i started drawing on the mdf
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-HNVko0TpDjY/Tg2mABKu1MI/AAAAAAAAACY/ZYJgc0eyI00/DSC02495.JPG)

first i drew on math paper, then on sketch-up, and then put it on the mdf

Now i am gonna test the setup and look at the screen angle to see what i like.

tested the screen and its great for its price, very happy with it.
Nice thing is that when i put on the main power switch of the cab the TV goes on and on hdmi video input, that is one less concern!

Game attract mode working

I am happy now with the decision of the shape, and LCD placement angle and height.

I can start woodworking

The attract mode seems to work!  :laugh2:

I really like that you've chosen a console instead of a computer. So much faster/better IMHO. How do you like the JLF's?

Man, I feel out of the loop with consoles... A PS3 can run MAME?

Yep, ps3 boots in 2 seconds, the tv turns itself on and setsitself on hdmi , so that part will be easy.
havent tried the JLF yet, but they feel good, still dubbing on going bal or bat top

Yes mame and other emulators run like a charm on the ps3, and some nice PSN games are available. And mvc3 on the ps3 itself

Still testing the speakers wondering for a 5.1 setup somehow or just put front left  + front rear together on one side and same for right. and maybe put the center in the middle..

Or i could do, in the speaker panel, front left, center , front right
and below the screen, rear left, rear right.

I got the speakers for almost nothing, thats why the strange 5.1 , otherwise i would buy a 2.1

The sound is pretty decent for this old audio system. and for 5.1 ps3 and psn games i could make things interesting.

Yeah its great  :applaud:

i decided for the speakers now. 5.1 setup doesn't add much value, this set cant output stereo to all 5 channels.

And with this decision i can keep the LCD in its case, its brand new so keeping it as it is is great for warranty issues.

Got started on the coinbox, it took 0,25$ at first but now 0,50 euro :)
To do this just Fidel with all the screws a bit and at some point you get the idea and it drops correctly.

And i added 2 microswitches to the push to eject buttons, these will reprecent the select button of the ps3 controller

SNAAKE forced me

Just kidding, after looking at sketchup some more, and influence of girlfriend and friends i decided for a angled version.

i tried a slim version from my old cab. but that didnt look right.

So i thought , lets try angled then. But i looked closely at many slim cabs i didnt like. And corrected what i "hated" about them for myself.

Today i made the t-molding slot.

First try the router at some scrap wood, to get the slot just right

18 mm mdf, + 0,09 mm laminate + 19 mm t-molding = flush
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-yMqmlT1-pv8/ThHg6ykcY-I/AAAAAAAAAFk/RwosY1T_b_w/DSC02538.JPG)

There we go
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-a3tHEDkTyaI/ThHg7BBMHhI/AAAAAAAAAFo/2FzNQ8d1sgM/DSC02539.JPG)

All done  :D
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2mhS3BurMuk/ThHg7omfEKI/AAAAAAAAAFs/TytIidsY26I/DSC02540.JPG)

Then i made a third sidepanel as a template to router out space in the inside laminate as Woodshop Flunky did on his American Ace cabinet.

Time to laminate the inside panels, track the sides with a pencil
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-OZA7_xNNmUA/ThHg8d58xNI/AAAAAAAAAF0/Ho2vb7MlvwM/DSC02542.JPG)

Using contact adhesive, and a rubber roller used for wallpaper
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-XjlROW8av-Q/ThHg8tbQoQI/AAAAAAAAAF4/SXKrOevyVsw/DSC02543.JPG)

Glue both sided and apply mdf
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-reYyjiGD-HI/ThHg9E_Ti1I/AAAAAAAAAF8/aB_TF8Zeloc/DSC02544.JPG)

Put something heavy on top
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Doo4VI0ThwU/ThHg-q8ssdI/AAAAAAAAAGI/i5qjGSyUtgI/DSC02547.JPG)

Remove the excessive laminate with a router and a flush bit
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-9pJ0VtTa00o/ThHg_vxUWEI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/H2NbOGiEFIk/DSC02549.JPG)

All done for today, protective plastic still applied
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-IgTFeEb-fjI/ThHhA3Gc3eI/AAAAAAAAAGc/6RBudZP2fTY/DSC02552.JPG)

Interesting.  I've never seen laminate applied quite like that.   Did you cut the laminate to size before you used the flush trim bit?

Interesting.  I've never seen laminate applied quite like that.   Did you cut the laminate to size before you used the flush trim bit?

First applied glue to both sides mdf and the laminate, then placed them on top.

then while its drying i cut it with a knife in the middle and then flush router it.

Today a lot of hard work and little progres..

i made the template for the laminate, measured a lot of times for the pine holders

Then router out the space on the inside laminated parts

It was really hard because i didnt have the correct bit, mine was to long for 18mm mdf template..

that routing was a pain, its dept for the pine wood was more then just laminate, also 2mm mfd, so dust everywhere.
my bit was to long to just scrap off the laminate..

I am still itchy

This is going to be awesome fun to follow!   :D  I just recently read the construction of your last cab, and I liked the way everything turned out.  So much so that I plan on following it for the construction of my next cab.

I cannot wait to see how this one turns out.

I cannot wait to see how this one turns out.

Thanks, it wont have a CRT ;)

If you want i scanned my basic drawing and measurements of my old cab. Its on math paper and in cm. its not much but could give you a hand for building it. Ill keep an eye out  8)

With my old cab being so loved its hard to top or equal it again. This cab will be made by rules i wanted.

That main rule was the size, we have 1 spot on our average apartment, and i made the size of the cab to fit that spot. Even the LCD size was bought depending on that spot. Then i drew a cab around the spot and LCD.

Other rule is detail, try to build is as nice as i can with the tools i have.

I cant work on it for 2 days, because my father got ill yesterday and had to go to the hospital by ambulance. Hes ok now but i have to fill in for our company coming days, employees are on holiday..  :'(

OK, i found some time this morning. My dad is doing OK, he should be back before the weekend.
Today i placed the pine wood on both sides. I did the placing by making a template for how much space i want of the sided for the mdf.
Then placed a piece of mdf in between and lastly the pine.

Don't forget to route out more laminate then the exact pine space, you never know if you need a fraction more space.

Route out more space then needed.

Cutting pine pieces...

MDF template for space and a piece of mdf and followed by the pine.

Then glue and screw them to the sides.
Important, i didnt glue the important pieces like the LCD holder, speaker panel and 1 side of the ps3 shelf.
Ill glue them when i have the cab standing and make the final measurements for those.

At the bottom you see a high up (11cm from bottom) piece of pine, its for a special wheel construction i made up.

Final pic for today as a result. I am really tired of prepairing the sided  ;D

Wanted to get some work done today, problem i am building this thing in a garage and i am depended of people wanting me to lend power from them. And this is frustrating.

So i made up my mind and moved everything back home. Ill build it in a tiny storage and outside combination to get it done.

I did get somethings done, i got the panels cut

And cutted laminate pieces for them
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-0_83t2MVkWA/ThmOyWXB1aI/AAAAAAAAAIo/PRAWaVXIYPE/DSC02568.JPG)

Prepaired the lcd panel holes for the vesa mount and coinbox got drawn out to cut.

The speaker system is a 5.1 and i want all 5 speakers on the speaker panel.

center is a much more watt speaker then the satalites (20watt to 7watt)

i still undecided how to place them

or 2 satalites together, then the center in the middle and the another 2 satalites

or all 5 in a row

It barrely fits though

I have been able to get the cab standing today  :applaud:

Till now it feels really solid, and the subwoofer and lcd will make it even more heavy. Lastly its against a wall.

Today not a picture flood, but i got many panels laminated and trimmed. Nice thing of laminate is it hides mdf mistakes easily and hides any gap.
This is a little time consuming , placing it back and forth before the trim, but in the end you get a nice flush cab on all the angles on the panels.

Tomorrow ill fit the lcd and finish the top and speaker panel placement.

Oh and the coin door got mounted ;)

I really like how you trimmed the volume control panel with you router.  :applaud:  I wouldn't have thought of doing it that way right off.  I'd have struggled with my tablesaw for a while for sure.

Nice job! :)

After i montaged the front coin box panel i added the volume control panel, it needed a trim , so i placed a mdf plate and made it flush with a router.

What kind of router bit did you use to do this?

this one, its my best friend for building this thing. And another one i use a lot is the same type but the wheel at the bottom.

Gonna go buy some m4 screws to hold the lcd now :D

p.s. To get back at the if its stable enough so it wont fall point. The cab is really heavy now with these 32" wide panels.
bottom back plate is killer

Time to finish the wheel construction soon.

Small update  ;D

Finished making the wheel system, place 4 wheels in the way you want to move your cab, putting it this way makes it easy to go through doors.

Here you see the wheels not in use and the cabinet is flat on the bottom.

Then i just lift the cab on one side and side in a piece of pine and lock it down with e L holder
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yQ8Hkhpv77s/TiQmWs2kHyI/AAAAAAAAAZQ/M-rO97m_cF4/IMG_1270.JPG)

This works great and is just to get the cabinet from a to b. When the cabinet is on wheels it has a lot more intention to drop over.
You should be very carefull moving it!

And i installed 2 silent fans for the air grill
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-66r4KuUPsAc/TiQmXqDI1EI/AAAAAAAAAZc/wUfUJWSAgZc/IMG_1273.JPG)

Next i worked on the marquee holder top piece.

I measured 6mm plexi gap
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-mgl9JbAzZtA/TiQmZc9wZlI/AAAAAAAAAZ0/EFdZuRZyfO0/IMG_1274.JPG)

Routered out some laminate
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_QBM7eX3hs8/TiQmXx2XNUI/AAAAAAAAAZg/aNawm58prhU/DSC02595.JPG)

made holes on 5 places, i drilled through the mdf and marquee holder
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QYVdyxgOhOo/TiQmYZe5WEI/AAAAAAAAAZk/W5H7whi-ja4/DSC02596.JPG)

Then add these suckers
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yKnmtBtAErU/TiQmYoBgF1I/AAAAAAAAAZo/LiLdKp1fWEM/DSC02597.JPG)

I glued them, there was no room to hammer them in ,i was scared it would crack the mdf or laminate
After a few minutes i removed the screws cause maybe the screws would be glued to
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-WNUCh6c0kVg/TiQmY8cRb2I/AAAAAAAAAZs/B_A-cfwTJas/DSC02598.JPG)

And you get this as a result
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-RgKA5TGQBZY/TiQmZJ_HQBI/AAAAAAAAAZw/RFp_VzWoVtY/DSC02599.JPG)

End shot for today

I am happy it can be moved with wheels now, much more easy to work with in my small space.  :notworthy:

Hi you 2 ;) and yes going rather fast, thats because i have holiday now and i can now make fast progress. After that very slow progress and in my opinion, when you are full in it you get better results then when you have to find all your tools again..

I also recieved some plexi samples. i think i will go with this one

Gray, 49% Transmission, transparent, UV absorbent, high-gloss surface, 3 mm

http://www.plexiglas-shop.com/NL/en/plexiglas-gs-allround-4aql41br8z4/plexiglas-gs-allround-grey-7c14-gt-dic33ry3pgp~p.html (http://www.plexiglas-shop.com/NL/en/plexiglas-gs-allround-4aql41br8z4/plexiglas-gs-allround-grey-7c14-gt-dic33ry3pgp~p.html)

its strong and very good quality, darkness seems ok to me when i hold it up to my monitor.

Also i been lurking around the ps3 and 360 area. I know its not the right way, but the ps3 scene releases of psn arcade games arent comming out because of the new key encryption.
And for now people can hack games into working on 3.55 firmware, but this will bleed to death i think..
A xbox 360 jtaged one has all the advantages, all the arcade remakes, and full mame (ps3 handles only 60% at the moment, no donkey kong for example)

then there is the point i wanted to include a ps3 webcam behind the plexi for move games, especially shooters like the shoot or time crisis series.

also i have the ps3 and joysticks, but no jtaged 360 (got one here but not working yet, some solder via's are broken off to dump the nand).

And created a bezel for the speakers for light

painted speakers

laminated the sides
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-zU8XTal4Xm4/TilWuJdXT2I/AAAAAAAAAbs/7xeonQUu4wE/DSC02621.JPG)

Thank you Dandare, and good luck with yours. I like the shape already  :applaud:

I found a great deal in a local electronic shop on 30 cm dual ccfl's white, 2 euro a piece, he had only 4 left. I took them all.
They must have be laying there for some time, they have very dusty packing.

And got a free 2.5A 12 volt power block and some alluminum role  :applaud:

I finished making the back Subwoofer/Airvent Grill  :applaud:

After painting the grill with satin black spray (primed first) i used speaker cloth to wrap it.

I used quick glue to hold it , placing the cloth , clamping it down ( use something soft on the painted side as the clamp would make marks)

Result :

Now it can be placed on the backpiece.

Also got 2 Madcats Street Fighter Fight Pads for controlls for the xbox 360.

I will be using the turbo and directional to analog stick (L/R) Switch as well

Did some work.

Installed marquee lights, note overlapping alluminum, they come with on off switches.

They are a lot, 6 x 30cm ccfl. But i remember from my old cabinet i had 2 x 50cm and it wasnt enough.
This cab is 30 cm more wide and if needed i can turn some on or off and even move them, they are with velcrostraps (came with the ccfl)

And started on the Sound, I/O panel

Made a small opening with this bit

And used the router to cut out the rest

Routerd out more space

Then you get this effect

Ruined the volume usb panel  :banghead: i drilled to fast and cracked some laminate, not very noticable, but i know its there, and i have enough materials to redo it.

And finished the back panel

On the last picture you see the speaker grill going till the bottom, thats because with routing the botom latch of mdf broke, it was to thin. i fixed it like this.
I didnt have enough laminate for such a large panel to redo it.

Not much for update but today my plexi glass came in , now i can finish the bezel.

i ruined nr 2 of sound i/o panel. I didnt check my laminate before applying, apperantly it had all sorts of scratches  :hissy:\
And it came out so nice.. Oh well hope i can redo it again and this time make it even more perfect.

Then there is that 1 gamepad is broken, arrow to the left doesnt work. Hope i can fix it as it was a 2ndhand controller. Lesson here, test before opening  :banghead:

The 2nd gamepad works fine, i was working on something to make the smd small connector for changing 4way to left or right analog stick

Here was the first idea

But i found this little gem, its a strong arcade abuse perfect switch

And works great switching between controlls

Done some more things, i forgot to add a on off push button for the cabinet, i placed it above the main power switch. Normally i would place it on top, but i always do a full shut down of the cabinet when i dont use it.
This way i just flip the switch and push the button. Tv turns itself on on power detect and goes the last channel. The xbox will boot in 4 seconds or so. So before i am standing it would be ready to play ;)

Also I fitted the plexi for the marquee this weekend and finished the bezel.

Marquee 2 x 3mm plexi highly transparent (Clear: 92 % light transmission), UV absorbent, high-gloss surface, break-resistant
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-6VGs_31Kt8U/Tjuu28PDObI/AAAAAAAAAh8/I2ZR1NtWqrE/DSC02695.JPG)

Alluminum h shaped holder and some metal glue

Then started to make the cables for the street fighter fight pad, i extended the switch for analog to digital switch (pad,L-stick,R-stick)
And the turbo button and led

Thanx  ;)

Didnt find much time this week to work in the storage on the cab, but did some electronics instead.

messy testsetup
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-tLJU5cnDVTY/TkgbkUJ6KUI/AAAAAAAAAls/S9X9Rdtv03s/DSC02731.JPG)

Found myself a nice jtaggable console  :applaud: These things are hard to find in good shape.
This xbox has only run for 5 hours from the previous owner. Its a old xenon type xbox 360, so it doenst have HDMI, but i still have from my old xbox a kick ass quality Monster Xbox 360 Component cable

It came only with optical , so i soldered stereo pluggs to the mainboard.

Then i also soldered

-The nand-x controller for jtag
-12 volt for large 3.5 inch hdd compatabilty
-removed the risistor microsoft uses to disable jtag with an update
-extended powercable for the dvd drive
-added some fans

The xbox is running fine now and i am installing and trying all sorts of software.
Also did some stress testing with all the extra fans, its keeping it cool (dont want a rrod)

Replaced main fan with this
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-abjCRfqZs9I/Tkgbj-HooaI/AAAAAAAAAlo/rc8oI-sce8Y/DSC02730.JPG)

Additional fans (added some resistors to them to keep them silent)

Extended power, sata, hdd and audio connecor
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-nlTXdjylKOk/TkgblA_DBlI/AAAAAAAAAl0/CaF5Q1P4IB8/DSC02733.JPG)

2TB hdd, way overkill i know. but they are so cheap atm, its 5400 rpm low power consumption and silent
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-40UNyBCbzk0/TkgblaGtcSI/AAAAAAAAAl4/E6aJRAXqoY8/DSC02734.JPG)

This hdd had some known error with possible data missing, there was a firmware update for it. Make sure if you get one you check it before using.

I also tested the speakers for the stereo sound, it produced a hum and little buzzing. Good thing i tried this first before mouting it into the cabinet. I rewired some GROUND wires and its gone now  :applaud:

Nice! Jtag's are the way to go.

You can install Final Burn and you probably won't need a PC for MAME. Unless you want some of the classics. I think Final Burn is more for NEO-GEO, CPS, modern shmups.

Nice work on the jtag

was it easy to do?
Title: Re: Scratch Slim Marvel vs Capcom [8 Aug - Volume I/O Panel Done]
Post by: Martijn on August 15, 2011, 09:31:07 am
Hi and yes 360 jtag is all i need. the old mame360 has been redone i think since June this year

http://www.emucr.com/2011/06/mame-072-release-2-for-xbox-360.html (http://www.emucr.com/2011/06/mame-072-release-2-for-xbox-360.html)

It runs all the classics now fine with all the mame options you want, even preview video

with nand-x and the official jtagtool and youtube it was very easy. jtagtool is a all in one package to get it running.

I still want to test some more because xenons can really get hot, i don't want it to rrod on me.

Hey I bought that whisper fan as well for my 360.  It was louder than the stock one for me so I threw it out and just used some proper stealth fans in its place that I modded to fit.  I love the vantec fans as they are actually quiet.

Finalised the woodworking for the most part.

Things left to do

- artwork
- wiring
- installing all components

and the whole control panel still left to do. But i decided on the design and now i can make artwork for it.

Installed 2 noctua fans for airflow
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-FZM1tQTfuRg/Tk-gkR3rzuI/AAAAAAAAAmQ/ZFTWUvCtoNU/DSC02738.JPG)

And brought the cabinet inside and cleaned it. Picture flood :applaud:

Thanks, i am still busy with the artwork, i need to have that done before i can proceed drilling holes for the cp.

I lack a lot of skill and ideas for designing and creating artwork, been using adobe photoshop a lot and learning it everytime i use it (thanks youtube).

Also with my last cab i send my drilling template local and the artwork to scott, but after drilling there was a difference in the holes, some are a few mm off. I still wonder what went wrong (was it the artwork or the printer or the drilling) , now i am scared to do that again, and will just wait for the final print and drill from that.

And for hardware part i am still experimenting with the xbox 360 heat. Doing something very insane with the 360 at the moment :P

Post by: Martijn on August 29, 2011, 04:54:01 pm
Just to show i am not all talk

Xenon xbox 360 heat problem solved  :applaud:

Bought 2 x Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus
I wont recommend this to anyone, the CPU coolers i bought didn't fit at all, the xclam system that came along with it was to big , had to cut all the legs by 1 cm
Then drill new holes in the clamps, also needed to remove more metal from the clamps so it would fit at many places.
Then extended some Capacitors that were in the way of the heatpipes of the coolblock

Added arctic silver as CPU/gpu past instead of the what came with the CPU cooler.

With my old cooling setup i was getting 65-75 degrees in the cab

First i tried 12 volt, that was really cool, CPU and gpu didn't get above 35 degrees loaded
but the sound was terrible lol, like a vacuum cleaner

Then tried 5 volt, that was giving me CPU at 55 degrees and gpu at 42 degrees

Finally settled with 8 volt, giving CPU 48 and gpu at 35 degrees

Well i am happy with the result.

After reading on the internet that there is a new hack to get homebrew and unsigned code to run on ANY xbox i felt kinda pissed  :laugh2:
I could just get a cheap 4GB slim , its cool and low power consuming and has hdmi  :banghead:

Ah well, nothing beats doing it yourself. And still that new hack could take up to a few minutes to boot (quote : "Even in the glitch we found is pretty reliable (25% success rate per try on average), it can take up to a few minutes to boot to unsigned code."), this one boots in 12 seconds

Well the reset glitch hack came out today, so I wouldn't beat yourself up about it. Plus you need a Xilink proto board and some other stuff, so that'd run you another $150 just to hack it.

The silent HDD  :applaud:

The hdd resonated a lot being mounted directly on the mdf.

With these 4 rubber feet its all gone now, in a completely silent room i don't hear the hdd in the cab now , or even on this testing table.

Together with the silent cool 360 setup i am happy with the total silence cool thing i wanted.

I bought 2 zalman fan mates v2 as well, to get the max out of the fans without hearing them.

Will install those this weekend and finalize the hardware part.

AND I COMPLETED MY ARTWORK  :applaud:  :applaud:  :applaud:

Send the order today to gameongraphics   Cant wait  :P

The usb and headphone are http://www.neutrik.com/uk/en/dataconnectors/204_1047652869/USB_productlist.aspx (http://www.neutrik.com/uk/en/dataconnectors/204_1047652869/USB_productlist.aspx)

I am very happy with the result of the marquee and control panel, i hoped for that the template for drilling was cut the same size as the cp artwork, i am have trouble figuring out how-to place the template for drilling on the mdf cp, and after drilling placing the art spot on. I first thought i would just place the cp art and cp drilling template top of that, then placing the mdf control panel on top of that, and just cut out the correct size in one perfect go. The cutting template seems larger then the artwork.

Ill leave that for now, here's some inside pics

Bottom side, with the subwoofer, coinbox, powersockets, and 12volt power adapter
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-7cnf4Y4LmIc/Tntxztk40zI/AAAAAAAAAqM/EoyYBOTlT6w/DSC02797.JPG)

Above that the panel with the Xbox 360 and its components, i think i moved the xbox and all of the component around more then 5 times to get it right with the huge cooler and large power socket and airflow etc.
I cut off 20% of the dept of the Xbox 360 panel, this was for more airflow and easy cable maintenance.

Recieved a new volume pot for the creative speaker set, i bought the set second hand and the main pot could turn and turn, and some volume balance problems. Gonna replace it this weekend.

Drilling template, i went with the generic version of the Vewlix shifted layout. Got it from http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/layout.html (http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/layout.html)
Why did i choose this design, well i placed my fingers on the cabinet and printed some layouts, this one felt best for my use.

Ready for drilling
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-2EzAIuLZJp0/Tn2XfUdu2-I/AAAAAAAAAsM/rr--3juUFos/DSC02822.JPG)

I have to note, i bought the Sanwa JLF sticks from arcadeshop.de and used their mounting plate details http://www.arcadeshop.de/images/specs/arcade-jlftp8yt-mounting.gif (http://www.arcadeshop.de/images/specs/arcade-jlftp8yt-mounting.gif)

Its not correct

The size is correct
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-uWr9SDLXaWU/Tn2aCubF46I/AAAAAAAAAs0/sKRBSk7sMto/DSC02826.JPG)

but the drilling holes arent
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-yzmtXY--a98/Tn2aCxaLZGI/AAAAAAAAAs4/5k-OIrLo92M/DSC02827.JPG)

Just have to make sure i dont make a mistake here.

Thnx, ill post some artwork pictures when i got some good pictures.

I added m5 bolts to the joystick plates and made them flush
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bKUChBMMQHM/Tn4_ZMYo3tI/AAAAAAAAAtQ/1zqsVxb-GsA/DSC02833.JPG)

And started drilling the cp
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-bTDOwgBHvwA/Tn4_ZzIYVqI/AAAAAAAAAtY/sw4tx3juK5g/DSC02835.JPG)

Placed the cab on its side and cleaned with amonia and then apply the artwork
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-p3MOsUNXKck/Tn4_bXMuQAI/AAAAAAAAAtk/al_IAZhNETg/DSC02838.JPG)

I also replaced the old volume pot with the new one, its perfect. audio is ballanced 100% at low volume and i can now finaly mute it.

Pretty happy with that, pretty happy  :applaud:

Not much of an update but i wanted faster dedicated network connection on my cab , plus the xbox has xlink for online play and i needed  faster ftp transfer.

Got a cheap chrome utp connector
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ZLLLIL0Jll4/ToyU7HkIUvI/AAAAAAAAAvk/28mEGy2XPdg/IMG_1583.JPG)

Painted it black
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-kpFvnPTobaI/ToyU8J5vWoI/AAAAAAAAAvs/ffhR2poHolg/DSC02852.JPG)

And installed it on the backside near the power socket
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AxiprvE9Eb4/ToyU_7O_JRI/AAAAAAAAAwc/KvlnANaIL88/DSC02871.JPG)

Started to work on the Madcats fightpad pcb. I removed the cable and added a pin socket to the board
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-sJVr9XGBCNA/Tntxw5xSL2I/AAAAAAAAAps/CUTtNzhnQ5Q/DSC02789.JPG)

And added a female connector to the madcats usb cable

I worked on my control panel some more  :D

I never thought i would have had so little space for all the buttons joysticks & pcb on the panel. I had to move stuff around a lot to get it to fit.
In the end i got it right.  :applaud:

First i had to cut the little pcb pets up once more  :-[
With the pcb moved all the way to to top it could fit just right.

Mounted the JLF plates
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-RrmlXRQGgQo/ToyU87m89DI/AAAAAAAAAv0/nvTbVcd2Ghk/s640/DSC02854.JPG)

laminated both sides and opened the holes up
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/--6i3IF_WNdI/ToyU9XE3zWI/AAAAAAAAAv4/gnd0AyFSh5A/s640/DSC02855.JPG)

The nicest way was to place the lpt socket like this
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jDEcs8ZKE_8/ToyU9zVz-rI/AAAAAAAAAwA/cn1Of9H0m40/s640/DSC02857.JPG)

But then the cp wont fit anymore plus i couldn't get the lpt connector in the socket
WONT FIT :(
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-kGHxVMLRXuM/ToyU-D1DwZI/AAAAAAAAAwE/Fj9O4MlD1dc/s640/DSC02858.JPG)

So i had to move the lpt more around. I centered it vertical. That way it would fit and i could get the lpt cable in.
And i started wiring
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-iUyn2zZkUNo/ToyU-8QBJoI/AAAAAAAAAwQ/umHzdZji65k/s640/DSC02861.JPG)

Pcb soldering

Amazing!

I'm rewiring my cp as we speak! Two questions,

Did you solder directly onto the micro switch terminals? (rather than crimps)

and did you bend the JLF pins 90ş? if so that's a great idea as they can be quite awkward to get at flat.

Yes soldered every connection. I am a soldering freak  and yes bended the JLF 90 degree, i used a dremmel and a bit like this

and dremmeled the top white plastic of untill the coper pins started showing, and i took a plier and bend all the pins up in one move

Today a lot of hard work and little progres..

i made the template for the laminate, measured a lot of times for the pine holders

Then router out the space on the inside laminated parts

It was really hard because i didnt have the correct bit, mine was to long for 18mm mdf template..

I debating doing something similar to what you did to route out the inside laminate.  I'm just having a little trouble visualizing exactly what I need to do.  What type of bit did you use?

I'm thinking I need something like this -

Yes thats the correct bit, you dont really need to make the template perfect, make the gaps a bit wider so you have some working space.

Or just dump the whole idea of removing the laminate, and just glue pine holders with screw from outside to inside (and inside to outside if you want), if you gonna laminate the outside it wont show a mark..

Thanks for the confirmation.  I may go with with your second recommendation since I will be laminating the outside.

I removed the laminate from my build with a router.  However, I didn't use a bit with a bearing.  Instead I used router bushings... http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=10671 (http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=10671)  Using these, I was able to adjust a straight bit to take just a little more material than the thickness of the laminate.  It seemed pricey, but it's nice to have if you do any other woodworking.

I also agree that you would be fine (strength wise) by gluing, and screwing the battens from the outside.  Aside from strength, one of the other advantages to removing the laminate on my build was that doing so gave me identical reference edges on each side panel.  This came in VERY handy when mounting my monitor and CP.

Not having space in my own house to place a cab, it's always fun living through the exploits of others in their cab builds.  :)  Your SF cab was beautiful, and this one appears to be coming along nicely as well.

Not sure if the builds for the 360 include it, or if the 360 is able to handle it, but have you checked out the HLSL function of MAME?  I didn't think my 4 year old laptop would be able to handle this supposedly power intensive feature of MAME, but was surprised to find out that it can indeed handle it, and the results are incredible.  It VERY accurately recreates the scanlines, bleedover, curvature, etc. of old school CRT monitors on an LCD screen.  I have connected my laptop up to my 42" LCD HDTV using S-Video and when running MAME using the HLSL feature in it, my jaw just dropped.  Hence why I have recently started compiling ideas for a second arcade joystick.  (Can't build a cabinet, but can build a joystick using the control panel parts from my halted cab-build).  Just currently delayed by a broken right medial maleolus in my ankle that has me on crutches and a walking boot.  Until that heals, and until I'm off of the pain killing medication, I can't be working with power tools or even going around Home Depot to pick up the MDF I need.

Anyway, cab is looking great and if you can get a build of MAME to run on the 360 that handles the HLSL feature, give it a try.  It's stunning.

It's looking amazing. The artwork and overall look looks way better than any factory produced arcade cabinet (wood) that I've seen. The JLF's looks like they aren't properly mounted though.

Thanks you all, could you explain this Emphatic? I mounted the plates as high as possible with flush screws

The shafts are about 1-2 cm taller (from plexi surface to balltop) than they're supposed to be. Hard to say exactly from your pics.

Some proper height examples:

Lookin' fresh!  :applaud:
I do agree that the joys look a bit too high. Take a look at any of the candy cabinets, or Vewlix control panels. You'll notice Emph's height example is the same. There should be enough space for two fingers right under the balltop, while holding it with your thumb, index, and middle fingers in a comfortable rest position while the side of your hand is resting on the CP surface (that is, without straining upwards to hold the balltop).

It might be too late to change it, but if you're happy with it, then all-the-power-to-ya. Maybe you have big paws though...  ;)

Yes, it's all about the comfort really. For longer sessions, I think this can actually do damage to your wrists.

I agree there's a time for authenticity, and a time for us big handed freaks to have it our way!

and +1 on the well executed art - best slim cab full sideart i've seen - proportions, etc. are great.  Plus, seems like you're going to see the sides whereas so many full depth cabs the art is hidden by the surrounding machines.

Man that looks awesome, congrats on finishing it!

Whats wrong with MAME and FbaNext? I'm debating modding my 360 and I've worked on some emulators before, if its just a matter of having a better UI or fixing up the drivers that isn't too difficult. If its something like not enough memory or the CPU is too slow to support some games, then that is a much bigger fix/change.
Title: Re: Scratch Slim Marvel vs Capcom [14 Nov - Finished]

mame needs some catching up its based on 0.72 and lacks some good video filters, movies and some faster rom search

fbanext is fine just a costum gui would be nice and some more rom support

thanks for the compliment

^ yeah its been forever. they really need to make a "coinops" for the 360 with arcade and console emulator all in one. now with the new reset glitch, everyone is waiting for new updates.

anyway your cabinet looks great. what kind of material is used for the sideart?

Hi Martjin,

fantastic build, I had dissappeared when you had just sold your SF cab, and when I come back you have finished another brilliant cab.  :applaud: :applaud:

I was wondering how close you actually are to the screen when you are playing? And if the size of the screen is a problem?

I was thinking of ways to make my cabinet also run x-box games, so to hear that mame is available on older xbox's is fantastic. I will have to look more into this.

Anyways awesome cab mate!  :notworthy: :notworthy:

Any chance of a video of the cabinet in action?

Ok how do I miss a new Martijn project thread? Lol...sigh...   :banghead:

I need to spend more time on these boards. Martijn, your Street Fighter cab was the main reason I couldn't look at my first cab and be happy and the Aliens cab was born and here you go make another and I miss it :(

Now with that out of the way....

AWESOME...pure awesome...I have always loved your finishes and the small touches you bring to a cab that just scream tasty vanilla vla ;)

Everything from the speaker grills to the artwork is first class.  I also agree...two fingers and a thumb is the perfect spacing for joysticks and I don't like the short ones either...yours are perfect imo.  Ok now to go back and reread this project another few times!  :applaud:

Oh and don't sell this one!!!! :)

Hello Martijn,

My compliments on your Marvel vs Capcom cabinet.
I've not made a cabinet myself, but I have been doing some research for some weeks now. Got my PC and monitor parts already, now I have been learning some sketchup moves and drawn my first cab, kinda like your first Streetfighter cab with the round edges only with a LCD screen, and less deeper.
Your 2 cabinet projects inspire me, and I love your artwork, could you give me some tips ? At what resolution did you make your sideart in photoshop ?
I allready found the Marvel/Capcom characters in high resolution.
Why would you first laminate the sides and then stick the artwork on it ? Doesn't the vinyl stick on the plain MDF ( or with a prime layer first ) ?

Would I be too straightforward if I asked you if you would share your original artwork files with me ? Sure would save me a lot of time though  ;D'
Thanks

Oh and did you place anything on top of the CP artwork, something like Plexiglas ?
Wouldn't the artwork fade after a while ?

Hello Martijn....

I made the artwork the same size in cm and at 300 pixels per inch (22441 x 7078 px) for sideart

i laminated the sides and cp because it makes the survace flat  and the adhesive sticks really well on it. you get a flat bubble free result.

you can buy my artwork if you want. pm me

all the artwork is laminated to last a long time , the cp has a material covered with Polycarbinate laminate (also used for bullet proof glass!) which offers a very tough, scratch resistant and textured surfaces. This will last a long time and take a lot of abuse. Do not settle for vinyl laminate!

Hey Martinj, Is the side art vinyl scratch resistant by chance? Or is it a regular vinyl?  I am trying to decide where should I get my artwork printed for my Pete's slim cabinet.  Also, did you use T-molding on the bottom of your cabinet?  I can't tell from the pictures.

Welcome aboard, Schabowy.

I understand your frustration, but I'm pretty sure the rule is there to prevent the occasional spam-bot account that slips through from filling up everyone's message box.

The good news is that you only need about 10-15 posts IIRC before PMs are enabled, so you're well on the way.  If you're lucky, Saint will read this and decide to enable PMs for you now.  If he doesn't, there are still many fun topics here to read and post about/throw in your 2 cents.

Hi Martijn,

You have laminated both sides of the side panels, I wanted to do this as well with 0,9 mm HPL you used but the 19mm T-molding doesn't flush entirely ( 18mm MDF + 2 x 0,9 mm = 19,8 mm ) , so 0,4 mm sticks out on both sides. How does this look on your Cab ?

And where did you get the perforated plate for the backside panel ?

I'm making a combination of your curved Streetfighter cab and the slim Marvel vs Capcom, work is still in progress I'll make a new Project Anouncement soon with photo's.

Hi Martijn

I know it's been a while since you build this thing, but I was hoping you'd still be able to answer a few questions about the 3-way position switch on the MadCatz PCB:

Looking at the fitted switch on the PCB it has 6 solder points, yet you only seem to have soldered 4 wires on to yours.

Do you remember:
- if you removed the small pre-fitted switch?
- what solder points you used? (top row, bottom row...?)
- and where you got the replacement switch? (I know it's a long shot ???)

You can just read out with a multimeter. center is neutral(ground?), one set of pins is not used. and I think connecting left with center or right with center gives away the other 2 modes..

Thank you for your reply Martijn.
I measured the pins as you suggested, and this is the diagram in case any one else is interested.
A 3-position 2P3T ON/ON/ON slide switch is what's needed.

Hey mate, love this build!
looks way better quality than what I end up building, but anyway I'm wondering about using a 32" tv in my build but wondering how you feel this works with the position you end up standing - i'm worried it may be too big a screen too close? What do you feel?

Thanks

Martijn - do you still have the file that is your control panel layout?  I am starting a cab that will be very similar in size and layout, and I love your control panel layout.

Patent has worn out :)

Sketchup model, well sort of. I used sketchup more to design the sides. The inside panels could have wrong measurements!

I was wondering about this way of mounting the brackets.
Does it not create a gap that is only covered by the cp overlay, that someone could poke a finger through by accident?

Use plexiglass over the top of the control panel.

Hi Martijn,

fantastic build, your posts have helped me alot when building my own cabs. Wondering on this slim one, how do you get to the insides, it doesn't look like any of your panels have a hinge/lock do you have to undo some screws to get in?

Thanks
Connor

Hello Martijn!

You did a great job with this cabinet, I love it!
I would love to make one for myself, could you share me the plans or the .psd file containing the theme?
This would give me a good base to start ... You may have already shared them because I saw someone selling a second hand in Belgium but if so, I found nothing ...

Regards

Hi

You should consider using 16mm MDF instead and a 7mm laminate as well
11/16" T-Molding (17.46mm) will fit. You also need to take the artwork thickness into account when routering the the slot, as this will add the the over all thickness as well.
