Joust restoration

Joust is one of my favorite classic games and I'd been looking for one I could restore and add to my collection for some time. When one finally came up at a decent price and relatively close by I decided to jump.

Prepare to Restore, Buzzard Bait!

There and back again...

Had to drive quite a ways to pick up this bad boy, after a 6hr. jaunt to the burbs of Chicago I had it all loaded up and ready for the return trip.

So a 12 hr round trip?  Holy ---steaming pile of meadow muffin----balls, Batman!  Looks good though.  I'll be following this restore since I'll be doing one myself in the very near future!

Wow, that CPO looks great!  Any cracks that I'm not seeing?  Looks like some elbow grease with a Magic Eraser sponge will make it new looking.

Yeah it's the farthest I've travelled for a cab but Jousts just don't seem to pop up in my area often. Luckily the klov'r who sold it to me discounted the price a bit to compensate for the drive.

Assessing the Condition

The cab is basically in solid shape with some dings here and there.

Gouge on the CP under P1 button, monitor works but has bad Joust burn, coin rejects missing and damaged:

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_0381_zpsqdg7wvvr.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_5096_zpsn1p2uzpo.jpg)

Nicks on the edges, t-molding crumbling, some swelling on the front kickplate area:

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_5513_zpsqkb3ftpz.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/C88A0EEF-988A-4B85-8982-EC63B878FC41_zpssglfcix0.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/2616DB41-ED4C-4BCE-ABFC-88BDEE8AE2FD_zpsp445clml.jpg)

Replacement back door is a bit janky, there's a switching psu but the wiring is a mess:

Yikes, I didn't notice that chunk missing.  You gonna replace the CPO or keep the gouge for the "Authentic Patina"?

I fixed it, I'm 95% done, just doing my restore thread now cause the site was down.  ;D

Let's get started

The cp is as good a place to start as any...

Removed all of the controls and started on the overlay with a heat gun.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_0419_zpsa61v4gta.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_0425_zpsv6fsg5qn.jpg)

I carefully removed the plastic piece that goes up against the bezel to save. Not sure you can buy these.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_0410_zpss8tzzfij.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_0412_zpsyf9w6kxf.jpg)

Once the overlay was off it was time to remove the leftover adhesive. No silver bullet here, tried WD40, methylketone, alcohol. Just took time, patience, a scraper and some elbow grease.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_4392_zpsvzd9vdub.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_7569_zpsqgyx07vo.jpg)

With the overlay off you can really see the gouge.

Patched up the gouge.

After cleaning up the cp I applied a new overlay.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_9774_zpsaou5d48l.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_2155_zps0rrsgvwo.jpg)

The Joysticks

The previous owner gave me the old joysticks and mounting plates but they were a bit loose. After some research I found out about the Zeroplay kits (http://jbgaming.co.uk/Zero-Play-kit-for-Williams-2way-joysticks) for two-way Williams joysticks and decided to get a set. They're pretty slick, I highly recommend them.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_4133_zpspz8fy4mx.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_1797_zpsvwqr6zac.jpg)

The previous owner also gave me the original joysticks but they were highly faded. I knew I could buy reproductions but heard the blue was greenish on them. Jim at jbgaming who sold me the ZeroPlay said he had some originals in decent shape he'd sell me as well. I decided to order the ones from Jim as well as reproductions for comparison and to use the ones I liked best...

The yellow ones were really close. Below from top to bottom you can see: 1.) Faded Original 2.) Brand New Reproduction 3.) Old stock from Jim.

The blue ones were no contest. Below from top to bottom you can see: 1.) Faded Original 2.) Brand New Reproduction 3.) Old stock from Jim.

In both cases I used the ones from jbgaming, i hate that greenish color in the repro's, I'm not sure why they don't use the original light blue color. jbgaming also had some nice new two-way dust washers he included with the order.

Here's the cp back together.

Coin Door

The coin door wasn't too terrible but since I wanted orange rejects and needed at least one new mech I purchased another similar coinco door for parts from a klov'r.

Here's the original

I removed all of the parts, did some light sanding and sprayed it with Rustoleum Satin Black.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_8837_zps5vivc1j1.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_3602_zpsb49y1hsv.jpg)

The used replacement rejects were a little scratched and dirty so I tried to clean and polish them a bit.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_3133_zpsfzlxib5l.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_3309_zpsl2heipba.jpg)

The finished product.

Matching the Paint

Before stripping and repairing the cab I decided to take some paint samples from it for matching, I wasn't overly confident with the online codes that are out there and wanted to get as close as possible. This felt like defiling some ancient artifact but it was already dinged up and I knew I'd be patching and repainting it anyway.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_5576_zpsvsc075nk.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_4184_zpsvar7spda.jpg)

Here are the chips (the extras are for a Pac-Man I'm doing next).

Out of curiosity and for comparison I went and got pints with the online codes as well as my custom mixes. In the end I went with my custom mixes, they were much closer. I painted a little of each over the original for comparison, you can see the variation.

The Marquee, Light, Speaker & Bezel

For some reason the black marquee light wires had been snipped and the ballast was gone.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/4E9E82A9-94B5-4F31-ACB8-CA8E06DFCA11_zpspptdhrtb.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/7ACD56D1-1CF5-4661-8917-94B99B5D865A_zpsjigjdnuc.jpg)

I installed a new ballast (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H9HKNRM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) plus starter, re-wired it and voila, we have light.

Then I prettied up the wiring a bit.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/8DABE851-4DC2-4BEB-BA3E-E0E037F1AB0F_zpst0henkxb.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/7E24CD7B-A710-457F-9922-AA408273D34C_zps3ybakltq.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/9E527A8C-1B41-4B2E-8D47-3BCC4D790CB3_zpsiub1tmcx.jpg)

The speaker was also shot and so I replaced it with a suitable 4 ohm speaker I found on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0071HY42K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1).

The marquee itself didn't look too bad. I cleaned it up and thought maybe it'd be ok but in the end the little scratches bugged me and I ordered a new replacement.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_0636_zpsgflv7xfe.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_0642_zpsrrzfvvhq.jpg)

The bezel was also a bit too ding'd up for my liking so I went for a new one from Phoenix Arcade (http://www.phoenixarcade.com/art.htm#JOUST)

Repairing the Cabinet

First things first I needed to strip off the old paint. I used a healthy dose of Citristrip and the old paint came off like butta. Yep, this was definitely a Robotron at the factory.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/99E8899E-03DA-4263-9E2D-2A629CB7FE1D_zpspp1y9tpn.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/82680F21-2436-4D0A-BB44-8A0579477CF9_zpsru6xpxtx.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/B3493463-DF81-455F-83C7-17F55C257D65_zps6foguliq.jpg)

With it stripped it was time to start some repair. I hadn't done a lot of wood repair before and when I solicited input on different fillers on klov I didn't get much response so I was left to do some experimenting.

I gathered up all the usual suspects and began.

My observations (nothing scientific, all opinion):
Bondo - The old go-to everyone seems to use. Good all around but dries so quick it can be challenging to apply to large areas.
Durhams - Great for bulk, you can make a ton of this stuff quickly. Not very moldable, more liquid-y and wasn't very strong when applied thinly like Bondo.
Minwax Wood Filler - A good alternative to Bondo, easier to work with in my opinion.
Milliput - This was my preference for edge repair. You can mold it by wetting your hands and working with it like clay. It takes longer to dry, I had to let it dry at least a couple hours before sanding.

For the kickplate area which had swollen and warped a bit I used Minwax Wood Hardner (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Minwax-1-pt-High-Performance-Wood-Hardener-41700000/100376253) to shore it up and then Bondo'd and sanded it level.

I tried the edge repair technique demonstrated on a John's Arcade video where you use plexi make the edge and Bondo. It didn't work well at all for me, chipping when I'd remove the plexi and it was a major pain to setup.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/E4D2A9FF-7293-44AC-8D88-CF5B76C4D7F2_zpsgfkb5fos.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/921C1156-BAFC-4E31-9967-3EC9E4C3DB6B_zpsybs7zqlz.jpg)

I much preferred Milliput, here you can see where I used it for corner and edge repair.

Great work, great pictures and great documentation!

When I do my edges, I just build up the bondo then slowly trim the excess away with a sander:

I pretty much use Bondo exclusively for cab repair.  Dont buy the "vertical surfaces"  or all purpose stuff, just stick with the regular automotive version for the best results.
If we have UCA's this year, I'll nominate and vote for this to be the restore of the year for sure. Its absolutely stunning work bro.

Agrees that it looks great, only niggle is that I can't follow at work since your pics aren't stored on the forum.

I missed out on a partially working Joust for 125 bucks recently because I was broke....  sucks cause Williams cabs are super pretty.

Time to Paint

Since I had the cab on it's back and up on saw horses alread I figured it was a good time to paint the black front part.

At first I wasn't going to prime the black area but since the kick plate repair left blank wood I decided to.

I used a high density roller and sanded with 220 in between coats for the primer and used the Rustoleum Satin Black paint + primer rattle cans for the black. I ended up with more texture than the original but it still looks good I think.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/FFF9D497-C238-4085-B925-33589D020020_zpscoworsau.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/F2F5B399-8772-4BD7-9FD7-91698BA3E0E1_zpsscgfc6tm.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/7FCE1763-0206-4148-BC99-C29DF4212B79_zpsw75wgtqb.jpg)

After I was done with the front I stood it upright and painted the black on back and then wheeled it outside to take a look in natural light.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/73658525-6267-419B-86A2-8FA169462EAF_zpsm43zw8s9.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/F2E1DAF2-DC3F-4A4D-AB7E-D4CF107B2818_zpsrbczxi5f.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/168B6C17-6071-4C72-B747-E0C5B593BC6E_zpszgvwysqc.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/C17AFE1A-B32C-4B82-BCCF-B18AA923F6B6_zpse45ho9qc.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/F8311F55-B3BE-4310-8F3B-0DFCA3EBED97_zps0firrhuk.jpg)

And while I was at it, sprayed the handle and some carriage bolts.

Nuts + Bolts + Wires

Before patching up the cabinet I stripped the components, washed them with Simple Green and ran them through a tumbler (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001MYGLJC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) with this media (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001D740Q4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Best $38 investment ever.

Painting the Sides

I put 4 coats of primer on with a high density 6" foam roller letting it dry for a couple hours in between each coat and hitting it with 220 grit sandpaper each time. For the final coat I used a finer grit to try and get it as smooth as possible.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/FE5147DC-59F8-44EA-932C-9183BD01608C_zpshxloqbej.jpg)  (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/BE52918B-1C0F-481A-AE03-8368034E658D_zpsn0vlbvur.jpg)

With the primer on I began to notice some rippling in the plywood that wasn't noticable before. I guess this is fairly common with these Williams cabs. The only way to totally get rid of it would be putting it on its side and pouring an epoxy over it that would level itself. I was pretty sure the final finish would cover it.

Then I did the base brown. Same tactic, multiple coats and dry time with sanding in between.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/9A6DC822-D02B-4049-A242-863AB6B50E6D_zpsqim4wae9.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/AF3FE5A9-74C5-4961-AAA6-BBD0575D969C_zpspgegimfo.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/23106A49-6F23-4D41-BC79-D3C195B2832F_zpsqf0dhswe.jpg)

On the final coat I tried wet sanding with a 3000 grit sand paper to see just how smooth I could get. As you can see by the close-up picture below, it was smoother than the stencil areas I did later (that couldn't be sanded) but it still wasn't as smooth as the out-of-the factory version which I think were enamel spray jobs.

Where'd you order your stencils from?  I'd love to try a stencil job, but I'm terrified I'd screw it up.

I got them from gamestencils.com (http://www.gamestencils.com/game-artwork/joust).

I was pretty tentative as well having never done them before. It's nerve wracking on multiple levels, they're expensive, the time it takes plus you're going over the base coat that you worked so hard on. I was concerned about rolling vs. spraying the paint and if there'd be bleed issues. I also read conflicting reports about how long to wait before removing them. As you'll see it all worked out fine though.

The (not so) Dreaded Stencils

This was the part I was most worried about. Having paid the $$ for the stencils and spending all that time on the base coat I really didn't want to ---fudgesicle--- it up.

My first question was which color goes on first? The answer to that is the one with the registration piece on it ('Reg' in images), in this case the yellow. After painting on the first stencil you remove all of the masking except for the registration pieces which is what you use to line up the other two stencil layers. Notice this stencil is for a standard Joust profile but it works for the Joust in a Robotron cab as well.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/C6E534B9-A124-4855-A95F-D716A19A26B3_zpswwkypkgl.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/CBC6C5EE-F485-4FD7-A441-22F2E1EEDC6D_zps5ali1whh.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/308CA08B-E021-4D18-99DC-D1217F2302F5_zpsazx3gaot.jpg)

I didn't get too stressed about he edges lining up to the cab, it just needed to be close, the registration marks will align the other layers. I cut the top with a straightedge, lined it up there and let the sides fall where they may.

You can see they drift a little along the sides but it's not a big deal as long as it's not totally crooked. Each cab is going to be a little different.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/0AEAE0BB-94CC-4EDD-841F-ED87032C08DB_zpsetkxoqd9.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/2E30F103-DBB5-4935-A487-DEFC994D19B1_zpscxaederu.jpg)

I used hand clamps (not shown) to hold the stenci in place in the middle/bottom of the cab while I removed the backing from top to get the top edge lined up and stuck down. Once the top 1/3 was stuck in place I could remove the clamps and continue removing the backing and the clamps and I went down. Using a roller to apply pressure and work out any air bubbles. I don't have a lot of pictures of this, must've been stressed.  ;D I did have a couple wrinkles I just had to roll with (see below), I stuck them down as best I could and touched up later.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/BF28E043-2249-4E0F-B89D-D429B2384F1C_zpsf9590zjz.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/49F917FB-140D-42DB-AC66-3BDF45233B98_zpspplquuyq.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/C6377A80-391B-4F7F-AB62-2983A1A68262_zpstqwq0bjg.jpg)

Masked off areas near the edge of stencil so I could paint more freely. I added even more than what you see here.

Painting the Stencils

Again I used a 6" high density foam roller for painting the stencils. I tried not to gob the paint on the roller to avoid bleeding on the stencil. I let it dry about an hour in between coats and immediately after the last coat pulled off the stencil. The coverage was good, some spots were perfect and in others I got bleeding or tearing I'd need to touch up later.

**NOTE: Be sure to cover the registration marks on the next layers (so you don't paint over them and stick them to the mask) and when pulling up the mask you need to make sure not to remove the registration marks, I almost took them off twice!

Yeah I'm curious if the bleeding would be less using a sprayer. I'm doing a Pac-Man next and I think I'm going to try spraying that one to compare. The bleeding was very sporadic, non-existent in some spots and noticeable in others. Luckily with the basic shape there already it's fairly easy to touch up, just time consuming.

The Touch Ups

Having the basic stencils done I took a couple hours touched up anywhere it had bled. It was a bit of a pain, not sure if there's anything I could have done to avoid it. I think you get some imperfections with any stencil job but since this was my first one, not sure.

Some before and after of touch-ups below. Color variation is from different lighting.

New Back Door

I wasn't happy with the janky MDF back doors that had been slapped together so I decided to make my own out of plywood closer to original.

On the original the top door notches into the bottom so I routed out the notches so they could interconnect.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/427E9913-A3E5-49F5-9E23-4BC09C199FA8_zpsohts387b.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/33B08058-5437-47F8-94D0-E247CF03F970_zpsxqn1phdl.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/223452AA-AA13-438D-BE1A-1A1FBAA05DBC_zpsqosonwti.jpg)

Got a heavy duty hinge as a close as I could find to the original for the bottom and checked the fit.

Mainboards and PSU

With the back door finished I could re-mount the CPU/Video/Interface/Audio boards and power supplies.

I was able to find a CPU/Video/Interface mounting plate on KLOV.

Here they are mounted on the door. You can see I did the lithium ion battery hack to replace the AA batteries as well.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/67548CC4-4686-4932-9EC0-E9631E390801_zpscgivwxrs.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/7E58E562-22AC-4471-860C-2F19CBA39A86_zpsnlf4ljlv.jpg)

The original power supply needed cleaning and was using an old brown appliance chord that needing replacing. I also replaced the wood mounting block it was on.

I also re-routed all the wires nicely and broke the switching power supply outputs onto a distribution block.

The Monitor

The monitor started out as a G07 with bad Joust burn. I did a cap kit on it and a tube swap but couldn't get the image quite as nice as I wanted.

(http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_8930_zps6ngzgaks.jpg)  (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_2421_zps5fcaonhv.jpg) (http://www.eightbitmonk.com/shared_images/Joust/IMG_2246_zps0khjssj2.jpg)

Then I tried a WG K4900 with a tube swap. I ended up collapsing the vertical on it after not having the chassis screwed down and bumping it.  :banghead:

I finally ended up going with a WG 7203 chassis I had and did a tube swap. With the remote board I have more control to get the image to my liking.

Restoration Complete June 2016

Overall I'm really pleased with the end result, it looks and plays great. There's not much I'd do differently, I may have used a better grade plywood for the back doors as they chipped a little and the finish isn't quite as nice. Also, for my next restoration I got an HVLP gun and am going to try spraying vs. rolling both the base coat and the stencils to see how that compares.

Finished pictures below.

Very nice!

I did my first stencil job on my Defender and used the recommended Krylon spray paint for the red and yellow.
With multiple, light coats I found that I didn't have to do any touch up except for where I screwed up when taking the stencils off.
When to remove the stencils was hard to figure out.

Great job on touching up the paint. It looks great.

then I check the restoration and project sections. Other than the BST, the rest of the site can suck an egg.
