Post by: DonBaker on December 04, 2019, 12:51:47 pm
Hi,
here my first Arcade Build,
*** first time working with a router, and many of the technique need to build a project like this

my side panel (gave me a good chalenge to get those cut straight)

my base (easy part ;) (https://i.imgur.com/YZpAlz8.jpg)

Assembling without the control panel and monitor bezel : (https://i.imgur.com/U2trVbD.jpg)

Now my big challenge.. the control panel to fit my cheap trackball from amazon (2.5inch/4.5cm)
first try :

i was not happy with the result.. so i made another one.

i routed it to be sure the ball was going through.. still not happy with it.. right now i have no idea what i will do with it

Some pics of the track ball and of the mounting difficulties would help a lot.

It looks like you need to route out the underside of the panel a bit. Can we get a pic of the whole trackball and the underside of the control panel?

For that small square-case trackball, you might want to try the approach that Degenatrons used here (http://kadevice.tk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=398).

We might have to get creative. The pics will dictate what happens next.

that really a good idea. i think he screw it from the top.. if i want to that , i think i need to redo my control panel , not much wood left because of the routing trying to make it fit

He used threaded inserts -- no hardware visible from the top.

If you don't have enough wood left in the pocket for the inserts, you can use several support bars/straps like the "Under mount (support blocks)" joystick mounting method in the FAQ.
-Put the threaded inserts in an un-routed section of the panel.

In that example it looks like the ball isn't high enough. Is that just a bad pic?

That pic is at a not-so-great angle for depth perception.
- Degenatron's panel is 12mm (1/2"), same thickness as the removed upper cover.
- Moving the threaded inserts to the side like the "Under mount (support blocks)" method increases how high you can mount the trackball.

Two related approaches using a router if you want your trackball to ride higher.

1.  Case top not removed -- case top provides support for the thin part of the control panel
- Route a pocket for the case.
- Route clearance for the catches on the side of the case.
- Use threaded inserts and bars/straps like the "Under mount (support blocks)" method mentioned above.

2. Case top removed
- Route a pocket for the lower case.
- Route an extra 2mm deep clearance slot for each of the two encoder wheels.
- Use threaded inserts and bars/straps like the "Under mount (support blocks)" method mentioned above.

That is a question of personal preference.

The FAQ lists PROs and CONs regarding dedicated admin buttons and "shifted functions".
