Title: Vectorized artwork site
Post by: Hellfromabove on March 20, 2004, 08:21:18 pm
Hey I was wondering if there were any sites that had some vectored art for download. The Mametrixreloaded site's graphics section has been down for like ever so I can't really get anything from there. Is there some site that has more arcade/ videogame based vectored art or just vectored art in general? Thanx.

The location for the vector art library is

the Arcade Art Library (http://www.localarcade.com/arcade_art)
[The original site is no longer there.  This URL now redirects to various :spam: sites.  Click at your own risk.  -- Scott]

The site has arcade art, side art, control panel overlays, bezels, marquees, and character art for arcades. It's updated by contributors.

So if you see something on that site that you need.  How do you go about getting it made into your side art or CPO?  What does it usually cost to have this done.

Thank you!

Dead? no.

Out of commission due to workload? yes.

There was also a time where the status of my employment here was in question which is why the website moved for a time and the downloads kind of fell apart.

I feel really bad because saint even took the time to ask my permission last year to put the library in his new book and then I managed to let it go to pieces. (I still bought the book to support saint and just because its cool to see your site mentioned in print)

Many thanks to mahuti for picking up where I fell short on providing this resource. I am back and going to see what it will take to setup a mirror site of the new library to use up some of this free bandwidth I have hanging around here.

Why don't you save the effort of making a mirror, and just help me moderate and improve my site.

I own a hosting company, so the bandwith isn't really an issue. I also have a cap set with a redirect to an alternate site, so I'm not worried about jumping my allotment under heavy traffic.

The most important thing we need to do to the vector library is to continually search for and add content, and make sure that it is good. If I could get your help on that, I think we'd all be in better shape.

If you want to help out, register at the arcade library, and I'll convert you to a Mod in no time. It doesn't take too much work to moderate, but it will become more difficult over time as more and more content is added.

What all is required of a mod?

I may be interested in helping out if it's something I can do, and if you need any more people.

I just registered an account, my screenname is megashock5.

thanks!

Every time I see this thread, I think: poor Hellfromabove, his silly question has been imortalized. And I use this thread to go to the archive often.

Oh, and we don't need any additional mods, but thanks Megashock.

I am currently working on some artwork for my custom super neo 29.
So vectorized the atomiswave and the Sammy logo.

I am working on the sega-sammy holdings logo now.

I dont know how to get the logos on the site so here are two links:

This is a noob question but what program can I use to open up those ai files? I downloaded a couple of files and would like to have them printed and made into side art but I can't view them? Thanks for the help.

Umm...I have GIMP 2.2 and it doesn't open .ai files. If you want to open a vector file in GIMP, you must first export it into either .wmf or .psd.

No, stay away from JPEG!
JPEG is a "lossy" format. It "re-encodes" the graphics so it compresses to a smaller filesize. Even at a high quality level, which your eyes might not notice, there is still some corruption going on. It is especially destructive with solid colors, gradients, and the edges of solid shapes (like text).

24 bit TGA is pretty good. 24 bit BMP. PSD. etc... use these so you preserve the highest quality possible.

What about TIFF format?  What level of descreening should a person use when scanning? RGB or CYMA color?

24-bit TIFF is good too, but those files tend to be very large (too large!)
Title: Re: Vectorized artwork site
Post by: mahuti on July 05, 2005, 09:42:58 pm
Honestly.... JPG at higher DPI is fine. Artefacting IS a major problem at low DPI (i.e., small web graphics at 72 dpi)

A 300-600 DPI scan that is saved as a JPG will reproduce very cleanly... and for the average persons output, will be more than enough quality to produce a good final image.

It's easy to tell... save a copy of the file as a high res JPG. Open it, if the file still looks clean at 100% then you are OK. JPG IS a lossy format, but its original intent was to allow easier transport for high DPI images and was created with that in mind. If you were going to keep the file at home, or you had a huge drive to transfer it on, that's all well and good, but if you are going to share it on the web, JPG makes a lot of sense. Just be sensible about it.

I was recently designing the final version of my RADICADE! CP and I started out at 300dpi. The only problem with that is I was doing it actual size (37x17) and the file was stupid huge. Whenever I tried to compress it down so I could post it I ran out of memory (1.8Ghz P4, 512mb DDR). I probably had it too big for a WIP but my pc just had a hard time with it in photoshop.

I know Ill probably catch some flack for this but I dumped it to 72dpi at a really high Q jpeg and at 100% mag it looks great (to my eyes). Now I don't know why it looks so good but I'm curious to see the results.

-=XD=-

ps- a lot of ppl say not to do it @72dpi, so I wouldn't if you don't have to. I just couldn't deal with a 298 mb PSD file.

i think its realy harder to design something from scratch in photoshop, thats why i always use vector based programs (preferably for me freehand). This is coming from a graphic designer, but u dont need to be one to design in vector. Design something in vector and u wont have anything else to do, u can play with it as much as u want and it wont lose anything.

different story if u have spent loads of time designing in photoshop. ::)

Full size at 72dpi is ok. You just need a higher dpi if you're blowing something up. Full size @ 300 dpi is probably overkill.

(Somebody correct me if I'm full of it.)

Also I'm looking for a Bezel for a Mimi caberette SEGA TURBO game.

I'm just started designing my first CPO.  I'm using photoshop, and my CP is about 43.5x20".  I set to 300dpi.  This works, but my PSD file is 450MB.  When I tried to do a "save for web", I got an out of memory error (Athlon 64, 1GB RAM).  I had to save, re-open, flatten, scale down to a reasonable resolution, and then save for web worked.

If I want to use one of the on-line graphics printing places, do you think they'll accept the 450mb file?  I'll attach a sample, I still need some directional arrows around the joysticks..  The outline of the controls is on it's own layer, so i'll turn that off before I have it printed ;)  Let me know what you think, it's all stuff  I got from NASAs web site:
Title: Re: Vectorized artwork site

If you can, use even higher DPI. 600 is ideal. Most large format CMYK printers print in the 1200 DPI range. You don't need to "save for web". When you're preparing it to be printed flatten the image first, that will reduce file size and have less chance of errors when opening on the other end. 44x20 isn't too big so when saved as .PSD your filesize should be 300megs max. Don't save as .JPG for reasons already explained in this thread and you're good to go.

On the main page... there is a note about which items you do, and don't need to be logged in to download.

All non-vector stuff requires you to register with a legitimate email and be logged in to download.

Why? Well if people are going to download hundreds of megs on my dime... I want to know who they are. I don't do anything with the registration info, other than just keep it for morbid curiousity.  :)

I like PNG, compressed and lossless.  BMP files are HUGE when resolution and bitdepth get up there.

Everything I try to download is corrupt anyways

I'm having problems with the website too.  Any zip files that I download end up being corrupted.  If I try to download a JPEG it downloads a random amount of it and then quits and I just have that much of the image.  I haven't been able to download more than 50% of a JPEG.

I've tried this on two computers at home and now also my work computer.  Several tries at different times throughout the day.  Anyone else having similar problems and is there anything I can do to solve this?

Thanks.

Gauntlet's vector files from AAL are available here:  http://vectorlib.free.fr/Gauntlet/
not all gauntlet  stuff from AAL is available on vectorlib, as some AAL files are bitmap, thus I won't host them on vectorlib.

I've been looking for that one too.  It's very nice!  The base graphics (homebrew fusion) can be found in emdkay's thread here:

Yeah, it's a really great design.  I'd still like to find the version you posted with the extra hexagon shapes in the background, or even a version with a transparent background to work with, but it's great in any form.

I think Knievel might have modified it himself to add the hex background and the outlines for the controls.  Not positive, but I think that was done by him.

If I use it and add some tweaks (and those tweaks look good) I'll host it for people.  I'm not a brilliant artist with this kind of thing so I doubt anything I do will be that great.

The other thread this list was posted in was un-stickied so I figured I'd update it and repost here.

I keep a folder of bookmarks titled "Arcade Art" containing all these links so I can "open all in tabs" and copy/paste search terms for fast searches.

No particular order for these.

All are good/reputable sources AFAIK -- let me know if they aren't.

Apologies in advance to any good sources I accidently leave out.

So, the http://arcadeartlibrary.com/arcade_art/ (http://arcadeartlibrary.com/arcade_art/) site, is a mirror of this anywhere? Is it listed in that big list above and I'm just not seeing it?

I'm not sure what the latest story is with that site.

Last I heard, Sirwoogie was admin there and had fixed a few of the previous crashes/outages.   :dunno

There's no mirror that I know of and the domain has been down for a long time.  :badmood:

A "whois" lookup (https://www.whois.com/whois/arcadeartlibrary.com) shows that the domain registration expired about a year ago.

The only good news is that the URL hasn't been registered/ransomed by a 3rd party yet.

Sirwoogie is the one to talk to about it? Really should just put this up on Amazon S3. Would be super easy and reliable and cheap.

It's been a while since I've been around but I remember the vector library was a really great resource. Is it all just gone? Surely someone has a backup of the files?

I spent a lot of time on a custom CP for myself and got a lot of pride from uploading it there and sharing it.

Not sure if it's your internet provider or what but when I clicked the link (on phone) I was sent to some spam competition site.

The AAL site has moved and the defunct URL from the second post in this thread has since been taken over by spammers.  (warning note added)

IIRC spammers also managed to take over the newer URL several times and the backups were corrupted.

Last info from Sirwoogie about AAL is that he found an intact four-year-old backup on an old HDD and was planning to repackage and release the files.

Not sure how long that process will take.   :dunno

Wow, thanks for the link!!  Brings back so many good memories.  The Atari Age was my contribution, my first ever vectorized art project.  I followed Frosty's tutorial and it came out pretty nice.  I can't believe it's still around!

Hey there, thanks for the great links, some of them are still working and they're full of cool artworks, but I'm unsuccessfully looking for Ms.Pac-Man & Galaga 20th Reunion cocktail cabinet bezel and both control panels artwork in vectorized format. Any ideas where if it's lying around somewhere on the internet? :dunno
