Bloody hell, what a brilliant design!!! :o
:notworthy:
Dude, that thing kicks ass! :applaud: :applaud:
love the design
Where did you get those bearings and brackets?
What's the screen type?
The monitor is an 21.1" NEC Model LCD2090Uxi SpectraView 2090 , they are expensive, three times the price of my Samsung WS 22"! (my wife says " that should have been our new fridge!") it weighs 9.7Kg or 21.3 lbs. specs are here http://nec.com.au/d7e13d2711994bce83257e3563aa225e.htm
1600x1200 native res will be used for Mamewah front end and any games that support it. Mame just uses video hardware stretch as you know.
Why did I spend so much? well, big 4:3 LCDmonitors are getting reaaly hard to find now....the fridge will hafta wait ;D
Hey wow, there are other dudes with rotating designs here!.....I'm in the right place yeah?
Love it!
Nice original idea.
one comment though,
It will get boring playing with yourself after awhile! :o
Add a second player to that cp.
(you can never have too many clamps! ;D)
The joystick hole is smaller than typical button sized holes, but the plate is rebated underneath for the joystick unit, so where it mounts is only about 5mm thick. The hole allows complete x /y movement of the stick i.e. it doesnt touch it even if you try and force it! Thanks for compliment btw.
Right now I enjoy nothing more than hanging out in the garage, radio on, beer within easy reach and powertools screaming ;D
Right now I enjoy nothing more than hanging out in the garage, radio on, beer within easy reach and powertools screaming ;D
Thats the best part right there. Untill everyone that comes over and oooooohhhhhhss and aaaaaawwwwwwwwssss at your creation. >:D
Lol, sorry. I feel embarassed for even assuming a single detail would be left unaccounted for :-[I like the clean look you're going for, but aren't you afraid that in the area around the coin inserts the paint is going to look bad (scratched) quickly?
The coin slots you see at the moment will be coverd by a raised panel with lit coin slot - I just didn't want a coin recovery/coin box door below that on the front of the unit. The final raised final panel should be able to take plenty of coin without scratches to cab.
Man this is getting so absurd I want to puke...............................................................................Awesome ;D!
Lol ;D thanks for comments - your original post with suggestions for final artwork still has me pondering (in a good way)
Excellent idea, proving that you dont just have to have a two armed two legged arcade.
-I have never seen the spray putty, intereting finsh, and I can already think of about 500+ applications I could have used this for in the past, I am running out the door to get some to play with.
-Did you note how you will finish it, I saw you wanted black gloss, compressor and spray tip? I will be very interested in seeing that one.
-Bump to you sir, excellent work!
Still gonna do those artwork sugestions in photoshop you mentioned? b :D I am interested ya know
I did a couple sketches just to visualize, and am having a hard time getting the proportions right due to all the angles that it has. I then got a brainstorm! That 3d file that you made could be the ticket, my gf is a modeler and I could unwrap that to get some shapes to drop into photoshop/illustrator. You wouldn't be against letting me snag those files would ya?
Holy :censored:.
where you can find dudes like me endlessly wandering the isles muttering to ourselves about the things we need for our cabs.
I'm putting only one switch per side for flippers but making a 'tilt' sensor switch for inside the CP. The unit will be on castors and have some movement so tilt is possible. I'll test first before really committing to that though, if it sucks I'll add extra switches near flippers as you say - be nice if it worked though ;D .
I've thought for a while that taking an MDF cab to an auto painter for an honest to god automotive metallic paint finish would be stunning. Your cab seems to beg for that treatment.
Finally here is a sketch showing the upper cabinet framework surrounding the monitor assembly.Oh wow, can't wait to see that part! But from what I've seen so far, I'm sure you'll not only be able to pull it off, but perfectly as well! :notworthy:
So...theory is all well and good - time to put it into practice.
Well, not to offend anyone but it is not the Sketchup skills that impress me the most :-)
Totally awesome work!
@Kman_Sweden hey, were’s ya avatar got to?It wasn't displayed in correctly for some reason... I'll fix it and put it up again.
Yep! Fav albums are 'Killers' and 'The Number of the Beast'Cool. So did you see them there this year? I think it was more than 10 years ago that they where there last?
@RayB - all those cabs are yours?? wow!Umm, yeah... I must admit, I've recently been wondering if these things are my version of "turtles". :-\
:notworthy:
I guess I could call this phase two (out of a total of 3 phases).
The paint (primer?!) finish on those pictures... looks like commercial molded plastic or carbon fiber or something... :dizzy:
:notworthy:
OMG what size are those fans? :o
OMG what size are those fans? :o
I think that is the bottom of his power supply. It is quite normal these days with that size for +_600W powersupplys
Awesome project. I take it the 'retro' feel is Computer Space game?

you can definitely see similarites there. this project is just simply amazing.
on a side note, why isnt Computer Space emulated in mame?

If I had to guess, probably for the same reasons Pong isn't.
"The driver for "Pong" was pretty much an ad-hoc attempt at simulating the circuitry of the original machine, and it wasn't following any tracable path from the original circuitry to the driver (in other words, the writer "played it by ear," so to speak). The "pseudo-CPU" used for timing purposes was a kludge, also. Because MAME's mission is accuracy, and since the Pong driver wasn't sufficiently accurate, the driver was dropped. I've been informed that, should one actually attempt to properly simulate the circuitry (like using the video clock as a timebase), then it would be accurate enough for inclusion in MAME. However, simulation of discrete circuitry involves a jump of thinking over regular emulation programming (involving as it does the simulation of electric components normally overlooked in regular emulation--diodes, transistors, etc.--as well as the emulation of any ICs that may still be present.), and I don't know of anyone who has made such a faithful attempt yet."
Space war is in Mame, and as I understand it, is pretty close to Computer Space, so I just play that.
I know someone like retrofuture understands this perfectly (duh).
Thanks very much for all the very encouraging comments folks (I'm not worthy of some of them, jeez :) )it's great to know that my design which is not along the lines of 'classic arcade cabs' has your approval. It means a lot to me. I'm sure there are folks who prefer classic designs and of course the purist in me is right there with you, I was there in the decades when they ruled so I have that nostalgic attachment to them as well.
Who'd of thought it. I was bowling with my family the other day when I spotted a Space Invaders II cab in very good condition. I forgot all about bowling and went over to check it out. I was enthusiastically explaining the monitor system to my 14 y/o who just stood there and said “Dad it's your go!”.
If anyone can get the glass centered right on this beast, my money's with OND.Haha, fair enough! :D
The dude laid up a coin slot from an avatar image on this board, fer crissakes :notworthy:
Autodesk no longer support GMax but it is still available for download. I've played with various modelling apps over the years including Maya and Lightwave, overall for what you get with 3DS MAX I've yet to see anything better but then it all gets down to personal preference and what you know/ have learned/ feel most comfortable with.
BTW I use the 'Scale' feature in Max to alter dimensions, scale over either x,y or z axis or combo's thereof.
"and find it worthless"
+1
When I started my drafting degree, the first 3D modeler they had us use was Inventor. It seemed so cool at the time, but once I learned SolidWorks it was over. I like ProE too, but it's not nearly as user-friendly for quick projects... ::)
Ond: I you have no experience with Japanese buttons, the general difference is that Sanwa's are a bit more sensitive, so if you (like me) like to rest your fingers on the buttons, accidental presses are likely to occur. The Seimitsu's IMHO, are perfectly balanced for most games. Keep in mind though, that neither brands offer the 'click' sounds of HAPP ore similar brand buttons, but are about as silent as leaf switch buttons.
Cool, look forward to seeing it. I've pretty much decided to go with the Seimitsus. Here's my 'take II' on the 2P CP design. I set the 6 button positions directly from the Sega Astro City (Player 1) layout. I've swapped out the Happ style buttons for the 30mm Semitsus. Hmmm I think I prefer the red CP lid as well. The white discs are of the same material my coin slot is made of and can be LED lit to indicate two player etc. It's nearly beer o'clock on a Friday..... weekend, here I come.
I like the 'wider' style pushbutton of the Japanese buttons, even if it is just a render.
The three white buttons are: 1 Player, Escape/Exit, 2 Player. There will also be 'Retro' artwork on the red space on the CP.
that looks amazing...i do however have to agree with emphatic...an exit button that close to the start buttons is just asking to get pressed accidentally. perhaps it would work good as a pause button, and set it up so that pause + start 1 = exit or something like that.
there is nothing more annoying that your idiot friend hitting the exit button accidentally in the middle of a game
P.S. What is that on the display for the horizontal and vertical screen test?
@emphatic- I like the backlit label idea, I was thinking along these lines myself, Lit shifted selections, button labels and joysticks/ Pinball plunger are also on my to do list.

QuoteI have to learn one of those 3D programs those renders make sketch-up look like cave drawings
Isn't that the truth.
Holy crap ond... just looked at the previous page (I had missed somehow) to see the monitor housing. That is by far the most impressive woodwork I've seen in my 10 years here. I'm still reeling. Making a cylinder like that would be impressive, but a dome for crissakes!?!?? Hats off.
We don't want you falling into the same 7+ year trap! :banghead:
I’m the guy the trady/staff at Bunnings hate, the guy who never wants hardware for its intended purpose.
I’d rather chew razor blades than explain my real purpose to em.
Hey Ond if you're looking for a young apprentice I can come live in your garage and be responsible for making coffee and going on beer runs. You are insane. You have gone so far above and beyond what I thought any one person could create with their own hands. I can't wait to see the finished product. :burgerking:
Hey Kman-Sweden I see you're into Maiden. Me too. Do you like King Diamond/Mercyful Fate? If so you probably have had the oppurtunity to see some shows (being in Sweden where metal is much more alive than in the states). I was going to see King Diamond play like a year ago or sth but he messed up his back and cancelled the U.S. part of the tour. :hissy: :hissy: :hissy: :hissy: :hissy:
-sorry for going off the topic.

Now that (up there) is funny....Thanks for the laugh Xevious, OND makes me look bad too, it's amazing what he's done. ! I'm totally blown away.....
now if I could only find some darn Spray putty. I have checked lowes/homedepot/walmart/pepboys/autozone/napa.....
want to hear something funny concerning spray putty.....
Since I cannot find any stateside, I looked on ebay and saw this:
kind of pricey, with the shipping, even worse, it's out of the UK.
so I send a friendly email to SIMONIZ, asking them where I can get some in the us. after 8 back and forths, Simoniz denies this product even exists.....just my luck....I got tired of arguing with them, even sent them the pic........
guess i have to pay for overseas shipping, what a bummer.....I think that stuff can save/hide my crappy craftsmanship, I want a plastic looking finish.....for my cab......
Can't you find something like that in the UK? In the Netherlands I found some from Motip. I bought it at a car accessory store.
Motip Spray Putty (http://www.motip.nl/?page=23&id=643&lang=EN)
It is Stateside where we can't find this stuff. To be honest what is called Spray Putty in Europe could be the same type of stuff that is called Filler Primmer here in the States. The product descriptions are almost identical.
I don't know why everyone praises him. This is NOT an arcade cabinet. He's planning on taking over the world with this thing. He hasn't posted the pictures of the nuclear reactor inside (or maybe it was a matter/anti matter reactor).December 21st, 2012 ?
Oh the estimated time to completion? 2012
Coincidence?
:laugh2: might want to resize either Dr Evil or the Cab unless he's bout 7 feet high.
Now that's funny. ;D:laugh2: might want to resize either Dr Evil or the Cab unless he's bout 7 feet high.
It's "Maxi-me". ;D
Dude::)
If this thing works out (which I am sure it will) would you sell me one?
Ond I envy your space work
:censored: unreal.
Love that lit stick mount! :o
Just one more level in your seemingly infinite platformer of awesomenessticity :)
Great idea! and I totally did NOT think of that. The CP plate will be covered by Laminex around the joysticks though so drilling it is not a problem, hmm I'll ponder it further.
Last weekend was spent 'Griswolding' the house ready for Xmas, something I've not really gone in for in the past but this year I said "what the hell, lets light it up".:laugh2:
Just hope this site doesn't self-destruct when you post the finished build as it wont be-able to contain its awesomeness .
The curved plywood shapes all started out life as some doodling on the back of a memo at work. From a rough daydream sketch to 3D design it was then, ok how can I make this thing real, what materials? One pair of odd angles at the rear of the CP unit required steaming plywood over a kettle to generate a twist in the panels to match the design :dizzy:.
Wrap each LED leg (except for common) with bit of tape, trim and slide shrink tubing over....
Wow, your CP will have a pink hairdryer! AWESOME!:laugh2:
First one to mount an AimTrack in a hairdrier wins a.... oh hell, bragging rights? ;D
First one to mount an AimTrack in a hairdrier wins a.... oh hell, bragging rights? ;D
How about mounting a hairdryer inside a GunCon? Sounds more challenging to me.
:P each one of my cabs comes with it's own full blown Phd..............Pink Hair Dryer. ehhhhh.
What the hell? slipping away to page 2? No way!
I have one small confession to make....I've been playing too much Wolfenstein 2009 I must tear myself a w a y ..........
:laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:
Meh.
I'm living proof that those boards don't know how to pick the tools up after I'm finished with them.
:(
I'm going to have to remove the unit and swap the Aussie 20 cent for the Token. The Melbourne weather should be mild this weekend and the machine mocks me everytime I open the garage door to check it's still there :lol so, I've got no real excuses have I?
Agree about the weather. Lately it's been so hard to do anything that doesn't involove being in front of an air conditioner.
I just cleared away about 17 inches of snow!
 I'd never have thought that my favourite build on these forums is being built by a fellow Melbournian. It's a small world :)

This thread is becoming like religion. I may not go to church every week, but I do make sure I get a weekly(daily!) dose of the updates from this build!
Ond I think you should leave this cab 95% finished and play it all you can, because I fully believe that once it's 100% complete, it will ascend to the heavens.
It'll be like 'The Rapture.'
Anyone for some special kool aid?
/end rant
I have a small challenge though, it’s been really bugging me ever since I began. What to call the damn thing??? Sure the thread title is ‘Retro-Futuristic Mame Cabinet, but that isn’t a name. I’m thinking of offering a ‘prize’ to whoever can come up with a name i.e. artwork or design work or similar.
So I’m throwing it out there... Name this cab and win artwork or design work to the value of..well,....my time and effort! Those I’m already supposed to be doing stuff for are included – we’ll work out something extra ;D For artwork samples I’ve done previously check here http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=95035.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=95035.0)

I do not think this awesome cab needs a name. There is no traditional marquee so why slap a name on it just for the sake of doing so?
You're right jav - no traditional marquee but I still want a name on the FE / menu and start up vid. I'm thinking of working the name into some artwork on the body of the cab as well. Not just for the sake of it, but if it looks good and ties in well then sure why not? I toyed with the idea of a sort of a clear marquee with just EL wire for lettering only above the hemisphere. I haven't totally dismissed the idea but at this stage it's unlikely. Even if it ends up as just a "Signature" style in small lettering on the CP that would be cool too.
Some more great candidates...thanks folks
@XeviouS - :laugh2: :laugh2: ahhh *tears* you should win a prize for the funniest no matter what... and wow what creativity, can I hire you as my muse?
after looking through the thread again as i do quite often
i noticed it was this picture that made me think of astro
Quoteafter looking through the thread again as i do quite often

Ah...I had thought you saw his original renders which actually had astroboy showing...not sure if it was Ond's or someone elses but there was at one time a picture of astro boy art rendered on the cab.
I thought it was Mega Man?
Acetone is awesome stuff. Always comes handy when you manage to super glue your fingers as well. ;D
That's never happened to me.......OK yes it has :laugh:That paint work is really above and above everything else I've seen. :notworthy: It will really look like it's ready for space once done.
Thanks man, I dunno though :-\ there's some pretty awesome paint finishes getting done around this place, I draw ever closer to the actual paint finish, lotsa red!
Here's a mark II render of the cabs name ala Bender's suggestion with extra flourish. (Click on the attachment for better view).
Looks nice, would be cool if you got that made as a chrome badge.
Personally I'd lose the year, dates the project and clutters it up a little IMHO
Just astro with the top sweep would rock, simple but elegant, like the cab
I love how everything on this project looks machined and manufactured. Stunning. :notworthy: :applaud:
Thanks man, yep those are clear Seimitsu's with some printed art under the caps. They will be lit with RGB LEDS using the secret Franco method :lol
Keep that steel colossus coming, hey, did I just come up with a name for your cab??? :)
Holy crap! :applaud: :applaud:
Holy crap! :applaud: :applaud:
dude, ya gotta drop the bowing icon in my thread
This thing should be put in a giant glass case when its done!
Then I wound fine copper wire around each cathode post and solder and then repeat with the anode legs for two rings which connect all the LEDS in parallel.
I'm waiting on how you fiberglass the globe around the top portion, I'm sure it will be a perfect sphere, with a paint job you'd see on a brand new ferrari...can't wait.
Simply stunning! However, those LED's are wired in serial...

Looks parallel to me..
I think you mean series, not serial.
You know what’s nice, putting my hands around the curved corners of the CP in the pinball playing position. I’d love to say I intended this, and maybe, subconsciously I did, but the curved surfaces on those outer CP edges fit perfectly into the palm of each hand, the position lines up with your flipper fingers exactly. It’s nearly (but not quite) as nice as putting your hands on the bare hips of a stunning woman who’s in damn fine shape, smooth, firm and full of promise.
Thanks Epyx, I like it too. I came home last night from work stressed and pissed off, drawn to the sounds of Linkin Park shredding my PC speakers, that was the result. Therapy man, therapy . I feel much better now.
That looks very nice. If the monitor + bezel would equal square, rotating the screen would be a snap.
Yes the inner workings of my mind, go figure, ..... I like the result though ;D
Wow. Sick.
Thanks man, yeah the silent video treatment, btw that's 'crikey' not cripey I should do a full blown video tutorial in stereotyp Aussie, strewth mate are you fair dinkum? (I never speak like that, I'm too young )
Electrostatic flock applicators?
I’ve got new plans in that department involving flock coating and a DIY electrostatic flock applicator.
I will of course share how to make the applicator, it's based on an ion generator and some bits of PVC pipe.
Oh yeah I nearly forgot, I removed the old plastic slot insert from the PVC and fashioned another from this.
It’s a metal drawer handle from a hardware shop. I hack sawed it up and after much filing and Dremeling I finally had a much more durable metal slot insert, here’s how the unit looks now with new insert.
violent fits of uncontrollable shacking
Yes........although now you've said that I'm not so sure........ j/k ;D On seeing the results of my first attempt I knew the velvet lined finish was worth it, though seldom seen, it's the sort of luxurious bling factor that seems to fit the cab's theme.
the next few updates of build progress are gonna B l o w T h e D o o r s O f f your expectations.
If you were planning to shoot your cabinet with lightning, you're too late. It's been done.

In true Pixelhugger style I'll build a little anticipation here....the next few updates of build progress are gonna B l o w T h e D o o r s O f f your expectations.
Projects like these are what inspires me to stop working on my own projects. :dizzy:
I'm considering purchasing a linear actuator to raise and lower the CP lid
One question though... Why isn't the spinner centered?
for the same reason some folks will be bothered by it being off centre in the insert, others will like the 'off symmetry' approach.
for the same reason some folks will be bothered by it being off centre in the insert, others will like the 'off symmetry' approach.
You're right about that; I do like the asymmetric approach. Especially here, where you've made it fairly subtle. Symmetry is great, but a CP isn't symmetrical to begin with (unless you have one right- and one left-handed set), so I think it works well.
Looking great, man. Your painting skills appear to be as sharp as your design skills. This thing is going to look so bad-ass. 8)
I think I would like the asymmetric look if it was the whole blue section rather than the items in it.
Since the blue sections break the controls up into groups, they could be placed anywhere on the red and I think they would look fine as long as the controls in them were centered.
Asymmetric designs do tend to draw the eye in ;) .
Take it to 2000!!!
Question...how are you about people touching your stuff...
Make sure you offer dinner and drinks first. Err.
Actually, that's a great question, as we've all come to think of Ond's cab as more of a 'work of art' than an arcade cab.

:laugh2:QuoteActually, that's a great question, as we've all come to think of Ond's cab as more of a 'work of art' than an arcade cab.
Agreed; I keep thinking it belongs in a glass case, or roped off like a museum display. On the other hand, it would be a damned shame if no one ever got to play on the thing.
The coindoor should say like 25 dollar per game.
The coindoor should say like 25 dollar per game./me waves hand. Imperial Credits will be fine.
I'll answer Benders question about admin buttons here, I like the underneath coin insert button you use, I'll do that too
@EvilNuff & wxforecaster - These buttons, they have become popular (well the idea has). Given the interest in them I've been pondering a way I can turn them out myself much more quickly. The time it would take given the method I used on the prototype would not be worth my while. I will give this some further thought, if I could crank them out at a reasonable rate I'd make them available for sale.
If it were possible to efficiently turn them out, I'm wondering what colors would people be interested in? ...
Now, if you can get a pre-made plexi disc the same thickness as that eaten away by the saw blade, you're guaranteed getting back to the original button height every time.
Did this project just stop? Or am I missing something? I just read all 19 pages of goodness, and now I'm left without a happy ending? what teh fark mang?

The rest of Ond's thread has transcended this universe. Future updates will be posted in another space time continuum.

I'm playing those numbers saturday night in the lottery!

Isn't that the numbers from LOST Tv Show?
Ahem. Ond. It's time.
<--- Insert snide comment here ----> :lolAhem. Ond. It's time.
Seconded! I don't know how much longer people are going to want to read about my non-progress!
;)
Hey Ond! How can reply to this thread (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=104525.msg1135970#msg1135970) yesterday but not even post to this one? People want to know if you have done any more on this cab!
:notworthy: best cab ever :notworthy:
@Rick - No contest, you will win hands down, well, for the time being anyhow.
I resist posting in my own thread without having made progress on my cabYa' see, this is why I like following your posts Ond -- all killer, no filler.
Unlike other posts on this forum I've avoided because the OP's decided to hum & haw about their projects, ad nauseum. Or running up their post counts like they're working on an unlocked achievement or something. :-\
Ond, glad to hear all the really important stuff in your life is ok. Cars can be replaced but family can't. RL (Real Life) stuff gets in the way of everyone's cab building. There is no shame in not having time to do anything on the cab for several months, that's just the way it goes sometimes.
With that that going on with the paint job, people are going to expect to see a big block V8 with holleys in there when you open the lid :)
Good stuff!
who do you think is repairing the hydrogen leaks on the Shuttle Discovery?Well not if he hasn't changed continent lately.
LOL....hope all is well OND, can't wait for more awesomeness!
:applaud:
This project has a special place in my heart.
It drys to a very hard finish which means sanding and polishing yield great results (now I sound like an ad for the stuff :P )
Ond
Sorry if someone already asked but what will you use to prevent scratches?
Then on sunny days when the neighbours wash their cars outside, Ond can be social and roll Astro out for a wax and polish...
I thought only auto maker with those high temp. over thingy baking the paint job in high temp can have that effect.... (ok... I donno much about cars... esp. paints...)
Hmmmmm... The rocket is a bit too "Pixelhugger", to me.
I was thinking three chrome vertical 'lines' might be more in order, with the first and third line being ~12" in length, and the centre line being ~16"? Something like a grille?
Hmmmmm... The rocket is a bit too "Pixelhugger", to me.
I love the rocket idea and who cares if ou borrow from Pixelhugger? He has a fantastic cabinet and there's no shame in "borrowing" his design ideas - that's the whole point of this forum and this hobby, right? I can't wait to see your progress.
I think a grill like this would be more fitting:
I've been waiting a long time to see you make that round shell, this is like some kind of backwards BYOAC striptease, PUT it on, Put it ON!!!!
WOW... Anyone that can read this thread and not be inspired has something wrong with them. I hope to one day have a fraction of the skill that Ond has. I'm honestly more and more amazed with every update.
what....are you making
(http://i581.photobucket.com/albums/ss251/Ond_photos/buildingthis.jpg)
I hate you Ond. I created a workbench...oh look Ond created this fiberglass, putty, bondo, custom contruction that looks higher quality than my car. Yeah my workbench is made of 2x4s and mdf! ;)
but being able to share the ups and downs is half the fun in this hobby.

Back in the car audio boom of the early 90's, I would stretch polyester cloth tightly over a framework and soak that with fiberglass resin. Then hand lay fiberglass over it for strength.
;D Well I'm gonna stand up for EvilNuff's workbench, simple it may be (wait, did I just sound like Yoda??), but it's a sacred place man, ahead of perhaps ....even the BBQ :o as a place of pride for capable men everywhere. Without a workbench what have you got? a kitchen table? can't mess that up (if you're married - doubly so). Nope, your workbench is your domain and with something decent to sit on it's my favourite place in the house. When my son is old enough (he's eight) he will have to construct his own workbench and being my son it will have to meet the most exacting standards imaginable.....OK Just kidding :laugh2: I love workbenches small, simple, SUPER EL GRANDO SUPREME whateva, in fact somebody should start a thread around (if there isn't one already) them so we can check everyones out, I love seeing ppls work area - makes me want to rock over with some beers in hand.
...
Hell Yeah! I'm gonna follow thisKman checking in to see your progress. And as always - stunning work!
Keep it up! ;D
Thanks Kman, nice to know you're still following this one
I hate you Ond. I created a workbench...oh look Ond created this fiberglass, putty, bondo, custom contruction that looks higher quality than my car. Yeah my workbench is made of 2x4s and mdf! ;)
I'll almost be sad to see this project completed but I have the impression we're not far away now.
It is superior to the CP finish and I will re-cut that to match.
I'll be in my bunk.
I'll be in my bunk.

It's true that many well known genre awards are named after major luminaries in the development of the art - Oscar's, Emmy's, Tony's, Hugo's, . . . Dundee's.
The names are usually applied posthumously, though. :-\ (Ond, best wishes for it a long and happy life!)
The Retro is a stunner. An update every weekend for a while now - we're getting hooked!
If there’s any peel visible YOURE OUTTA THERE
I’ll have to ask a glazier how firmly something can be glued to glass.
uh... just wanted to be the 1000th reply! ;D

It's that one guy from Dune, right? Can't remember the character's name (human computer, addicted to spice juice) but he was played by Brad Dourif in the movie, if my memory serves me correctly.
Crap... I'm going to Google it, because now I just have to know the character's name ... do I win something anyway? LOL.
I've never been a fan of Dune, but that speech always intrigued me...
OMG. OMG. OOOOO MYYYYY GOOOD. :applaud: It's gonna be hard waiting for the pictures of that pretty thing covered in shiny chrome. :notworthy:Yeah, +1 on what Emph said.
Stop being in awe and awe us with your build, Rick!!!
Come back, Ond! I've been working diligently on my cab, and you're not posting. People are going to start thinking we're the same person!

I don't think you have to worry about that too much...
;)
Rick, you and I can't be the same person because of one very significant fact.... I'm holding a can of this... ...and you are still looking for it. :P
@cartman
Careful, you can't rush true greatness.
Besides, it's been a few years, what's a few more months? Esp for work like Ond's.

...This weekend I divided my cab building time between helping out a friend and working on the other hemisphere (still). The fact is some aspects of this cab from a progress point of view are boring. To get these spherical surfaces really right means literally hours of me sitting out in the garage sanding. Sanding, sanding, and then sanding. The first half hemisphere went through the same thing too before I ever went near it with paint, but to post "well another day of sanding and cut-back then re-spray ain't so thrilling. The pics don't show ripples and hollows in the surface but if I run my hand over they are there - or were. The key thing here is I'm continuously working at it. It's just nothing like building a traditional cab, saw MDF sheet, assemble .....well you get the idea.
This is what's coming up within the next 10 days or so. The other half hemisphere will get painted and polished, I'll reassemble the top of the cab and surface finish the curved brace that runs down the back of the hemisphere. Then I'll cut the ring insert and get into mounting the glass and positioning of the monitor with a bunch of new rotation tests. This should be way more interesting.
I don't like to say "you ain't seen nothing yet" but well, I'm sure excited by whats coming up and knowing other folks are keen too keeps me going through the boring stuff. So seriously, thanks for the interest and the comments. I have a very clear picture in my head of how this cab will look (and function) in completion, that really is more than half the battle with ambitious projects. I'm sitting out there transferring that image into reality. Welcome aboard the bus!

I've been quiet this whole time ('cept somewhere in the beginning) but still been watching, and I must say this thing is phenomenal.
Question:
On that yellow chrome back plate, did you sand back the cog pocket or did the putty shrink in the oven?
Forget the cab work- I'm absolutely flabbergasted by the genius move in making a spraying booth out of an old tent!

The tinted and toughened glass will be completely smooth and free of any screws or mounting bolts on the outside surface. Should be cool.
To remove the glass from the monitor will require a double cup suction lifter, the kind cable dudes use to lift floor tiles in server rooms (anyone know what I mean?) one of these puppies.
Painted on flames just won't cut it eh?
I've seen etched plexi lit and it is quite impressive. Hmmm, could be edge lit from different angles with sequenced ultra bright LEDS to produce a kind of flame effect.
An idea I was toying with way back (I posted it somewhere in this thread) was to use fibre optic cable for some effects. I put it out of my mind and got on with the build. I have a bunch of printed info on Edge Emitting Fiber from a supplier here in Australia that I'll dig up and revisit. The centre of the cog-coin slot glows white 'hot' (Iron Man style) when the cab is on, any flame effect should be in line with that. Of course you all realise you're setting me some kind of complicated challenge here. Painted on flames just won't cut it eh? Alright then. >:D
Drventure shot the food.
K, been a lurker for a while now (I first came here after trying to find help with a broken button on my machine) and seen a lot of amazing projects. This is great, but imho maybe the flames are in danger of making this the Katie Price of the arcade world????? of course it's your machine, and you'll make it awesome, but I feel flames might detract from the smooth, organic feel of the build.
But meh, what do I know? I'm no OND..
Blasphemy.
Anything OND touches becomes gold. He's the Rumpelstiltskin of BYOAC.
But meh, what do I know? I'm no OND..
Stellar work. You should be in the custom car business where your work would be worth tens of thousands. Thanks for sharing your work with us. :applaud: :applaud:
Speaking of which I'm casting an eye over that Xenolix design I did, you gonna build it? I hope I'm standing in the right spot when folks throw money ;D j/k
cheers
Ond
Cheers drV, nice to know you are still a regular on these boards, quite a few folk have come and gone since I started this. We're here dude. But when one can't contribute, one shuts up. ;)
I wish the stuff I feel I'm comfortable working with came out as well as the stuff you feel uncomfortable with.
BTW, from now on I will always post the date in the thread heading for any progress post with pics, if I'm just waffling on I won't change the date. :)
You know what, I agree (and not just because it's easier :) ). Let's come back to the Rocket / flames etc once I'm done with the main build. It's all too easy to get caught up in bling effects here and there on cabs but essentially I think (on this cab) the focus should be where the action is i.e. the screen and controls. I still appreciate the various input from other folks as well though!
These will go to certain BYOAC forum members. It would be my way of marking the end of this project and saying thanks for the inspiration. Who would get keys? I haven't thought that through yet.
Ond
Well, I would nominate Saint as a key recipient for obvious reasons, then DaOldMan if you are using his Mrotate setup. Drventure has also provided a lot of feedback, so I think he's deserving.
hmmmmm *scratches chin* a very interesting idea. I LIKE IT! OK I'll ponder this some more.
Should I even be admitting that the image of the "Golden Tickets" had already occurred to me?
Nice pick with the casters!
Jeez, you'll need to put it up on blocks and put mirrors on the floor like the do in the custom car shows!
That bottom needs a great big flaming OND logo or something airbrushed on it :)
I picked up the casters at our hardware outlet Bunnings which is part of a large hardware chain here in Aussie.
Aussie? You mean there's still a chance I could build the sickest cabinet in my country? Whew. I mean, I know the worldwide title isn't up for grabs anymore but at least I still have something to shoot for. ;D
I have already written the rotation scripts in the steeper motors proprietry language..[/C3PO]

Sorry, I just couldn't help but hear C3PO when I read that. ;)
you can speak Bachi can't you?
You see everyone, Ond's cabinet is why you don't tell people about this forum when they see your cabinet for the first time. They might see this thread and recognize your shoddy POS cabinet for what it is. I can't even tell what is a render and what is a real photo any more. :dizzy:

Ender Wiggin.
Light guns? no, no plans to support em, you think I should? You are the ideas man (and are So geeting a key ;D). E.g. that ring of light button mod, that was your idea, I just built it.
Must be a smart boy to garner a comparison to the Great Wiggin, of course with his father in the shed building flux capacitors out of thin air it's not surprising. If you need some additional material though I'd liberally borrow from Alex Rogan and David Freedman. Great characters.
Totally bogus teaser tho. I really thought I had nailed it down to Ender.
Yeah sorry, I opened my big gob way to early with the 'teaser' OND was naughty. The story board is done, so is the script, artwork is in progress, mocap is being sorted and music looks promising. Nuff said.
nice dildo-gun ???
Must. Learn. To. Render.
. . . we've come up no small form factor solutions... and neither has Andy (but we have high hopes).
The EMS Topgun III is wireless. I sure a genius like yourself could transfer the guts and probably even get the sensor bars apart and mostly hidden.....
Thanks for the tip! hmmm sensor bars, ok I'll have to look into it.Ond, the rendering looks nice but I think that inner black part where the aimtrak would go may look better with "rifling".
Just for you Michael, rifling added (ain't it a ray gun?? but you're right rifling looks better), slightly tapered down muzzle and a longer grip so Vigo can comfortably hold it. 8)

Well apparently Ond built that phaser but it was so good, when he fired it, it took him to the future cause we haven't had updates in a bit ;)
Haha, jokes aside, hope all is well in Ond's world, as we all know "real life" can take away from time on our personal projects.

If it's anything like most IR "sensor bars", there's actually no sensor at all in them, it's just a small array of IR LED's that the IR camera in the "controller" can key off of.The topguns are the same way. The only concern is getting the correct spacing as the originals to more easily calibrate them.
The Wiimote and Aimtrak both work like that. I rigged out a "sensor bar" with a piece of circuit board 5 or 6 IR LEDs from radio shack and a few resistors. Stuffed it in a piece of copper tube with holes in it, and presto, steampunk sensor bar.
Maybe the topgun is different though. Haven't worked with one of them yet.
I WANNA TOUCH IT!!
:lol Are you guy's getting ideas for all the things you want to chrome on your cabs now? :D
Mmmmmm nice slot. :o
Amazing, you should take a break just long enough to clone yourself so that the world can see more of what's going on in your head. Seriously how long would it take for a bunch of industrial designers and engineers to come up with something this sweet, let alone prototype it. You run it through the whole process, nobody is Jack of all trades, master of all. You sir are an artist, designer, engineer all rolled into one. Whaaaaat? :dizzy:
If this gonna be that kind of party, Ima stick my .... nevermind. >:D
Awesome work!

BUMP! It's been a month... I need a fix!
Ond, where you at?
*ping*
Wait is this done yet??! I can't find the finished images. Such a clean coin thingy. Good work
These headlamps were going for $5 a piece at a local camping shop which works out cheaper than I can buy the LEDS on their own.
Thanks for the comments guys. It's good to get this part of the cab completed. Just letting everyone know, while I will continue to work on this as time permits I won't be posting small incremental updates to this project for a while. The next update post will be when I've fully completed all surface finishing and rebuilt the motor / screen rotation assembly i.e. when the cab is almost to completion stage. I've already covered these stages of the build in plenty of detail previously and to revisit the same things is, well, boring. When I have the glass bezel attached and the internals of the cab all in place I'll do maybe a couple of build updates before final reveal.
 all till then
Ond
Ond, I don't need any pr0n shots of your project, but at least tease me with your word that it's coming along, I'm dying to see this amazing thing finished!

We're dying to see your OND designed masterpiece started >:D
As to my own cab, I finished off the coin reject box this weekend and tested the coin mech fitted into the cab. There's plenty of pics and a video as well. Ond speaks! :-[ Again I used the nice blue semi opaque plastic sheet to construct a box out of.
Thanks for making these Ond, they are really great and help a lot for a visual learner like myself, this is worth a thousand written articles on the subject.+1 great vids just shows what can be done if you take your time and strive for perfection, oh and a lot of talent too
It's good to be back working on my cab project, I've had so many things on the go in the last 6 months, and still do, but I'm finding the time again for this. I guess for a lot of you guys the colder months are on the horizon, here the days grow warmer and longer, so expect me to pop up here and there more regularly now ;D
Heh, whenever I look at any pics of Vancouver the weather always looks perfect, good avatar pic, got a side view? >:D
Dang, I just spent the last hour of my life reading 34 pages of this thread spanning over 3 years of work, biting off my damn fingernails holding onto my seat and the cab still isn't finished? :banghead: How can you sleep at night OND?I felt the same when I first read the thread!
I feel cheated by Satan's Hollow..... :dunno
Glass will be masked (as I said) and rotate with the monitor. Just the screen will be visible.
I'm thinking dark smoked glass (fixed), with some LEDs behind the monitor for attract mode. Or maybe some cool effects during rotation. Then black during gameplay.
Flashing multicolored lights would look cool with that acoustic foam.

It's time to render unto Comtek what is Comtek's (winner of the "name my cab competition errr some pages ago....) ;D. @ Comtek - PM sent to you.
Initial sketch -the design criteria was for etched glass inserts or panels, I decided on a cocktail cab (because I haven't really designed one before)
Here is the first draft render of that concept, including etched glass panels with space ship stylized etching with inner glow lighting, speakers are located under each CP panel. CRT monitor fitted (fixed aspect)
I've tried to make it interesting without being too difficult to build.
more on my own cab soon...
Black craft paper and invisible tape.
Nice to see you're back on this!
Wouldn't it be easier just to have the glass stay still and only rotate the monitor?
Wouldn't it be easier....

I'm not in a good mood at the moment though your post cheered me up. I'm having challenges coating the glass :banghead: I thought I had it in the bag on the second go but I waited too long for the primer backing coat (which protects the black paint and provides a surface to stick mounts to) and when I lifted the masking tape the primer coat tore ragged edges. GAH!

Maybe run a very sharp razor-blade along the edge of the masking tape to cut the paint away from the tape before pulling the tape off?
Finally I switched on the monitor and fed it some blue, all in all it's the look I had in mind, I'm happy with it, it looks slick no?

I hope you're there to see it when it all comes together :cheers:I'll stick around and would be happy to be the first one to buy you a beer when that day comes!
It really is f-ing unbelievable how much effort you put into this build. The rest of us aren't worhty to call us selves arcade builders :notworthy:
Let's just define a new category for Ond and we'll be able to keep calling ourselves arcade builders. ;D
wait... this is an arcade machine?
This half-sphere cabinet thing might catch on.
...I ran it again and indeed. It was different in my mind :dizzy: Nevermind. Great build once again :applaud:Looks great! What system is that Cyvern game (0:50 in the rotation movie) running on? It's completely different from the MAME one...
Thanks, actually that is Mame (148u5) :dunno
At some stage I will turn my thoughts to a script to integrate with Mala specific to the stepper motor. If anyone wants to give some thought to the code please be my guest. I'm happy to swap some design / art time for some code time :PThis sounds like something DaOld Man might like to sink his teeth into.
Here's the basic high level flow I had in mind:

Finally I have a video to do for a certain Encryptor on the ins and outs of my DIY velvet flocker.
Thanks Rick, that's a real muthaflocker!
As I mentioned here's a render to show the stencil art I intend to apply to the finished cab and the chrome pieces I've yet to create. These are going to take some time to complete mainly due to the lengthy electroplating process. The last piece I had done took around 5 weeks to come back to me from the chrome finisher. While I'm waiting for those I'll be surface finishing the rest of the cab. Ta ta for now.
The stencils are "hijacking" the rest of the design.
I'm not exactly sold on the stencils either.
Seems like Le Chuck's pinstriping idea might be a very good idea to consider in place of the stencils. :dunno
Scott
OK guys, I'll give some thought to pinstriping and post up a few variations when ready. I like the idea and it would be easier to do than the stencil design. Other than than that, I'm stepping away from all things arcade for a while, primarily to tend to other missions but also because I'm weary of it and not putting in a full effort to the builds I have going. I'll wrap it all up, put it out of sight and out of mind and focus on health, family - the basics.
When I'm re-energized and can tick off some of those things I'll be back. I'll post some alternative mock-ups after this weekend to mull over.
Ond
WTH, it's been almost 5 years anyway - what's a few more? ;)

beautiful build, ond... but aren't you going to put some blue on the sides? it looks lonely on the control panel.
Hmmm, yeah, those sides need to share some of that blue.
Forget side art! The only thing that should be clinging to the side of that cab is a scantily clad sci-fi babe.

A casual "nope" to Barbarella, Queen of the Galaxy?! How dare you, sir!!
;)
Hell the hole thing should play Queen at start-up.... Or have some kind of telepathy controls....
Update?
Progress on this? Nil. I am however feeling good for the break from arcade machine building. Various things have got me interested in getting back into building personal projects in general. Actually I have my eye on my little bartop project at the moment. This weekend I have to build a dog kennel. My kids have been waiting years for a dog but it hasn't been the right time until now.

I just spent the better part of my night reading through this entire thread. I don't have any words to describe what I am feeling....
just wow.
it would be nice if you could work in some sort of kick-plate
I think he is more worried about relocating to a home where the ceiling wont cave in and fall on his creations.
My guess is OND is working up some sort of repulser force field projector that will automatically come on when it detects any miscreants.

Lo, the old text did read of a sign.
Not a big fan of the diamond plate, and I think those front corners need protecting as well. Have you considered the clear automotive protective film to protect the finish from people's feet?
That's nice, the render is better too. I prefer the renders when the cab doesn't look like it's coated in baby oil.
Concept render with improved bumper-kick plate, I think this suits better. Next - cutting out the pieces for speaker grills.

@XeviouS - OK I admit it :P well I loved that show in its day anyhow, in the MacGuyver spirit here's more....
As promised here's a DIY Electrostatic Flock Applicator. "What does this have to do with arcade cab builds?" I hear you ask. Not much really, but it is part of MY cab build and who knows may be of interest to someone. As I mentioned I've seen some great finishes on things like car dashboards and moulded inserts etc, I figured it would look wicked whenever the hood is popped on my cab, to see a smooth flock finish inside. I first had to come by an applicator. A brief search online revealed these to cost around $200+ for a hand held device. Too much. Maybe I can make one. Some more research and sure enough other people have similar ideas. I’ve seen some made from margarine containers, flash lights and so on. I like plumbing fixtures, they’re cheap, easy to cut and different pieces fit together to make stuff totally unrelated to plumbing. Ticks all the boxes!
Here are the bits for my version.
Essentially the unit uses an ion generator like those found in air purifiers. They generate negatively charged particles that help remove dust particles from the air. I’m afraid the Ion Generator is nothing much to look at despite the exciting sounding name.
They can be ordered from http://secure.oatleyelectronics.com//product_info.php?products_id=327&osCsid=c3396bb14f42d4849e8836f0b20b7c1a (http://secure.oatleyelectronics.com//product_info.php?products_id=327&osCsid=c3396bb14f42d4849e8836f0b20b7c1a)
at a cost of about $12. The switch and socket can be purchased at any electronics hobby outlet. The power pack I had left over from a dead ADSL modem.
The switch, ion generator and socket all fit neatly onto the PVC handle, some gluing, drilling, cutting, soldering and assembly and here’s the result.

You fill it with ‘Flock’ fine fibres of rayon about .75mm long, power it up and sprinkle the media over any surface covered in glue. Let dry, and you get a durable suede finish in the colour you choose.

I’ve tested the unit and it works really well! For not much more than $25 dollars, worth the effort.
For those interested here is the wiring setup I used.
A word of warning these units generate high voltages, some commercial ones up to 40KV or more, touching the earth lead and screen at the same time aint healthy! If you build one and taser yourself accidently it wasn't my fault ::).
Next post will show the CP lined inside with flock coating, and some other good stuff ;D
Very happy to see this update.
Hello BYOAC bothers, sisters and other peoples....
Encryptor, I dismantled the original flock applicator and then built a new improved mark II model featuring a more powerful Ion generator. The improved unit needed a larger diameter handle to fit the generator. It turned out nice (I painted it black too) and it works well. It's currently hidden amongst a pile of boxes in my garage, I'll find it and measure the pieces and let you know.
So, back to this project I started in, what was it 2009? The last two years have been taken up with renovating my house for sale and then selling it and moving my family into a rental. We will rent for the next year at least while we look for a country property to buy. All Arcade stuffs (and many other things) were in deep storage during this time. I'm happy to say, all that is done, my Astro Cab is back in my garage and a workshop of sorts is coming together. The cab has suffered some gouges and scratches to the paintwork and parts are scattered here and there. No problem though, all can be brought back to a gleaming finish.
This project has a ridiculous number of pages and many, many viewers, it's been buried for so long, some newbies will be seeing it for the first time - g'day to you. I love this cab, have loved working on it and will enjoy seeing it through to completion (finally). A few more pages, updates and falavel to come. I yar excited! ;D
Ond
Back in the saddle again! So good to see regular updates going on this project again. Keep on pushing, Ond, were all excited to see more! Here's another guy that doesn't check in as often as he should! At least I get my fix of you on KLOV!
** Edit.... I ment to say one of those esteemed Klovers. ::)Don't worry, I read your initial post. KLOVes aren't all that bad. Most of my closest friends locally in this hobby I met on KLOV.
Say hi to Pixelhugger for us! Let him know that I used one of his joysticks in my ZapCon: The Game build.
Ond -
Having gotten to see the coin slot subassembly in person, I've got to say, wow. :notworthy:
Your craftsmanship is just amazing. The photos in this thread were impressive, and they didn't really do it justice.
We did. You met up with Ond yesterday, right?Say hi to Pixelhugger for us! Let him know that I used one of his joysticks in my ZapCon: The Game build.
So technically I was there. Glad to hear it made a contribution.
Looks like you guys had a lot of fun.
At the risk of hijacking Onds thread while he's stuck in baggage claim... YesAwesome. I think more than going to ZapCon, he was really excited to meet you!
I had a fantastic time showing Ond and his daughter around. He's a great guy full of great ideas. Comparing notes was a surreal experience for me. I still owe him a [reallyexpensive]beer[/reallyexpensive] so I'll have to find a way to make good on that some day.
That's only because my badge collection system is more elaborate than yours and my lanyards come in a more colorful assortment. But theres always next year for you Yots. ;)Pixelhugger Gotta Pixelhug.

Glad to see that Zapcon has you fired up to work on it again. Love that glass you got from Zapcon! I bought one too but I forgot to pick it up from the vendor before I left on Sunday. :banghead:What did you get, DeL, maybe I can get it for you?
DeL
So it's 12:30 AM here, and after a few weeks I've finally caught up on this thread. You should meet the guy in real life. He's even more awesome.
Ond, forty one pages.... every time I returned to this thread, I'd stumble across an interesting ingenious idea, and immediately enter a tangent rabbit hole for days researching materials and components, suppliers, exotic cabinets, ruminating on possible repeatable manufacturing processes for the feature or functionality. Inspiring. After being away from the hobby for a decade and change, and mostly a lurker before then, you inspired me to dive back in to a hobby I know I'll always love (if not afford).
Forty one pages, and I still don't get to see the finished product yet. I feel lucky in my timing, as not only am I far closer to the finished product's final reveal than those who have been jonesing month to month for progress in this thread for years, but I also get to see you dive into new stuff, and adopt many of your great techniques.
Aside: early on work was being done on lit ring buttons, I don't remember seeing a conclusion on those - did they ever manifest, or were they anandoned? During one of the aforementioned tangets I arrived at a process involving a pvc pipe cutter, a hole saw, and using a drill press with a sanding jig to get perfectly matched translucent disks to go in the split-top buttons (also a dremel cutting wheel orbital jig option), but testing it still requires the acquisition of a drill press on my part. If you can poliish your joysticks and balls with them, why not jig it up for vertical lathe-esque work I say.
Back to the praise :) Your humble manner certainly gives me confidence in quoting "No Gods or Kings, Only Man" - the work of many others in the forum confirm there are "challengers" to your "title", and those of master class are plentiful in this crowd, but you sir have demonstrated it with boldness and style.
I will continue to watch, and hopefully be able to return a fraction of what you've given me in inspiration and motivation in just this one project.
p.s. To everyone else, my apologies for bumping this while not being Ond.
I don't think he can do it.Oh, so Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3 is done?
Spoiler Alert: When some jerk tells me I can't do something, I work harder to prove them wrong. (You're welcome for the side-effect of quicker updates.) ;)

Work harder. You're welcome. :cheers:Oh, so Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3 is done?
Ouch, man. Right in the feels.
BTW. However this is no ordinary cab and will feature a limited selection of favorite console (and PC) games.
I pretty much missed the whole console era, had no interest in it. Others here grew up with it i.e. younger guys.
If I was building a classic cabinet shape, for starters I wouldn't be putting an LCD in it. It would have a few choice mame games only or a dedicated board and a CRT.
Heh another fellow Aussie, and no danny, you know very well it isn't finished. Yet. Actually I'm in your neck of the woods right now ( Brisbane) where the weather is pretty ordinary. Looking forward to getting home today. I'd rather take 10 years to finish 1 project I'm really proud of than compromise, wrap it and call it done. I'm kinda done with posting every little thing I progress on this project. Finishing updates only.
Nice to know another Aussie on BYOAC and thanks for the interest. I can help you with a DW skin. I'm away from home right now, back next week, I can look into then if you like.
thePrimativ, PM sent to you but no response? :dunnoHaven't seen it will check now
Dont be pulling a Tully
He's gone from more than just this site. I'm hoping he's alright.
Alright - I don't post much here any more, but now I'm concerned. Where else is he "not"?
Maybe he just wants to be left alone? If he wants to reach out to someone he will.Agreed and I understand wanting to be left alone, but I'm still allowed to be worried about the guy. He bought me a beer in Arizona!
You have every right to be concerned for a friend. Especially one who buys beer.Alright - I don't post much here any more, but now I'm concerned. Where else is he "not"?
He axed his FB and the email address I had for him.Maybe he just wants to be left alone? If he wants to reach out to someone he will.Agreed and I understand wanting to be left alone, but I'm still allowed to be worried about the guy. He bought me a beer in Arizona!
Ond is a cool guy - positive and outgoing and friendly and madcap in all the right ways. I'm extremely surprised by him pulling a Tully.Dont forget some of the best builds on here.
I was just talking to Scott about this via PM. He knows everything...Just to be clear, the second sentence is the exact opposite of what I told Chance in the PM.
No one seems to have an answer. :(This sentence is an accurate paraphrase of the PM.
I chatted with him this morning through email, he's seen everyone's concern and asked me to pass this along. He's alright. And now you know everything I know. So

I find both Laythe and MikeA to be fine, upstanding members of this community, and seeing them fight makes Baby Yot cry.Well, Whether he has left or not his posts were his, And he (or anyone else) doesn't owe squat to the payback police.... But should one speculate, everything was fine until he got back from zapcon, then his posts became slow and less pointed....Personally Jennifer thinks of his many great ideas only one sticks out beyond anything he learned from this (or most likely any other site) and it was overlooked for its sheer brilliance and judged as common knowledge.... That and his wiliness to teach others was fascinating to watch, I cant even tolerate some of you, but not him, he could always deal with stupid and do it with grace.....So to Ond,: Jennifer checks her hair one last time.
Honestly, I wish Ond didn’t nuke his posts. Hell, I wish LouisTully didn’t nuke his posts. But like LT, I’m sure Ond had his reasons. I just find it sad because I know how proud Ond was of his craftsmanship but also how willing he was to teach others these techniques. Hell, we even talked about him doing a demo at a future ZapCon. So for him to take the time and trouble to go and delete all these individual posts makes me worry about it. But eds has pointed out that he is physically ok, and out of respect for Ond I’m not going to engage in any further speculation. Just stay well, Andre, and know you’re always welcome back.

Mr. Tully....If you're gonna leave go, personally I could care less. Your removal of "intellectual property" is disrespectful of the BYOAC members past, present, and future. At best a collaborate effort...You're the only asshat here.
Yotsuya for the win. :applaud:
AGAIN.... I am NOT blaming Zapcon (or whatever happened there).... But It doesn't help your case that OND pretty much just STOPPED posting after he got home (in public forum anyway). Friends or not, good time or not, Big future plans or not, it does NOT change that fact.Yotsuya for the win. :applaud:
It just makes me mad because Ond was a very big supporter of ZapCon and was actually thinking of donating one of his pieces to give away. He also had some ideas that we thought might help get even more old time BYOAC members to come by. I’ll just leave it at that. But don’t say that the event had a negative impact on him - I know he made many friends there. It was an honor and a privilege to meet him, and I hope he can return one day. I know in his heart he really wants to.
You are still blaming Zapcon. Do you know how words work? You just don't make any sense.....Stop posting idiot.
You are still blaming Zapcon. Do you know how words work?
You are a good guy Yots. Not a lot of those left.
I think we all are. I'm not kidding when I say I'd really love for Steve to make it out. I think he needs a kind of joy and camaraderie in his life.
I think you should go Howard. Yots and I have been around BYOAC since somewhere around 2009/2010, but you've been around way longer. I'm sure there's plenty of stories to tell in person which the BYOAC ZapCon bros would like to hear. I agree about Steve too, he'd probably be surprised by the warm welcome he'd get. Ehhh, I can make no comment at this stage about my own attendance, not trying to be secretive or anything but I just don't know. Unlike the year I did go, money is very tight right now.
This entire thread should be nuked from orbit...only way to be sureI agree. I feel like I'm at a junior high sleep over.

You’re probably too old for something like that. :)
Just FYI, the 'Build an OND designed cab 'Metropolis'' sticky is still intact. The way I see it, Ond took down the threads to his own projects, but left what he gave to the community intact. Make of that what you will.
