Title: Rowe AMI R 81 problems
Post by: Longknife on December 15, 2012, 02:08:04 pm
Am I glad I found this site!!! You guys know your stuff!!!! I have a r-81 juke box that used to work great and then when it started having problems I quit using it. That was about 5 years ago. Now I want to get it going again.

First problem: The record selector buttons will not work, the numbers do not light up, even when you "scan" It was working a few days ago but suddenly stopped???

Second problem: When I could select records everything worked fine but the sound was terrible. The original speakers are shot and I had some other ones hooked up and they worked fine for a while. This is what caused me to quit useing the JB a few years ago...

Thanks for your help....Ed

Hello Ed,

I suggest that you need to send in the following boards from your Rowe Ami R-81 to a Rowe Ami repair specialist, if you were in Europe you could send them to me in the UK:-

Memory Unit
Mechanism Control
Selector Logic.

We test these boards as a set of boards.

Alan

Thanks Alan, Before I start into this project I wonder if it is worth fixing? It will need new speakers, the selector buttons fixed and the amplifier repaired. Am I getting in $over$ my head????....Thanks Ed

Hi Ed,

Why will it need the speakers replacing? are the cones damaged, they just used paper cones on the R-81 not ones with foam surrounds, if form surround spears have been fitted and they have since rotted you can purchase form surround kits.

I can not tell you if the jukebox is worth repairing, if you are doin it to sell on then the answer would be no but if you want to end up with a good sounding jukebox that looks like a lat 70's jukebox with a fair amount of chrome then this is a good option.

Alan, No, I am not trying to sell it. I was just trying to get it working.  The surrounds on the speakers are rotted, it doesn't look like foam, more of a felt type paper.  I didn't know they could be repaired. The numbers on the back are 719702,----4-007039-01 and l-7039-A. are these the correct speakers?....Thanks Ed

Alan, I just did a search on surround kits , there are a lot of them, how do I know which ones I will need?  I found them from 8 bucks to 40 bucks . Which one do I need for the above speakers? I also found some used speakers out of an R-81 but the numbers didn't match, they are listed as 22 ohm speakers....THANKS AGAIN, ED

Here are the ones I found
