Title: Spinners vs Rotary opticals
Post by: cdbrown on June 20, 2002, 08:57:58 pm
I am wondering if there is any need to have spinners on my panel if I am going to use the Happs rotary optical joysticks.  I think I read somewhere that these joysticks spin the same as a spinner it's just that they don't have the rigid feel.  Is this true  ??? ?

The mechanism is the same as a spinner.  Problem is the rotaries are high-fricition and they won't freewheel.  You are probably ok with them for Arkanoid or some of the driving games, but forget it for 720 degrees or Tempest.

Yep I just got mine yesterday and it is not freewheeling at all.  I got mine for the Ikari, Heavy Barrel stuff and I have a spinner as well so no problems, but I agree they will not replace a spinner.

I'm thinking about using the Happs opticals on my 4 player panel.  Can you use the Oscar restricters with these sticks?  I'm trying to determine if I should get 2 Supers and 2 of these, or get 4 supers and two of these and swap out a set of the supers when I want to play Ikari.  Do the Opticals feel different (other than the obvious rotating thing)?

Thanks,

Brian

AFAIK, the happs opticals are supers + the optical circuts. So the feel should be basically the same.  I suggest 2+2.

Could a trackball be a good alternative instead of a spinner.

Tempest and arkanoid work fine with the mouse so I can't see what could be diffrent.

Also does anyone know where to get the oscar spinner in the UK.

Thanks

The trackball can be used to play spinner games, but it is not a patch on a proper spinner.

I live in the UK and ordered from Oscar Controls - it came very quickly but I did have to pay
