Post by: bitbytebit on July 26, 2011, 05:31:39 pm
This is the TODO list, post ideas/issues/bugs here so they aren't forgotten and lost in the cracks.  Patches are welcome!

All posts will eventually be removed after read and assimilated into the top post for the TODO list (to keep things simple and short)

Current TODO:

* ISO Linux w/Mame 143 and kernel 3.0 (expected in next week or so) Has been done
* Incorporate wiimote into groovymame and Openppjoy kernel patch for ISO
* Figure out why Linux patches and modifications don't fully work in other Linux distros
* Using powerstrip in Windows to do modeline changes
* Add support for modelines on secondary device (Windows)
* Add LCD monitor support (fixed resolution + custom refresh)

Please consider inserting into installation wizard the option to configure auto mounting of removable drives for easy file management for noob users. (linux ISO)
Also consider inserting the option to operate the installation wizard with standard arcade controls via standard M.a.m.e. key bindings.

is CabrioFE possible on gentoo and the groovymame live CD?  It's got a hyperspin feel that may draw a few to the dark side...

That's incorrect (at least for me): i'm running switchres + groovymame under slackware64 13.37 (kernel 3.0.x patched with 15KHz patches).
I admit it takes some time and works, but the result is good.

Iv got one :) the only thing that is stopping me from moving is,

The ability to unpack a zipped game like gameex then repack it when opening, bog space saver if you have all the PS1 and XBOX games!

Yes. :)  I have an Arch Linux package for this now.  Should be straightforward to integrate.  The 'fuzzy' issue is generating the gamelists in an automatic fashion that makes it easy for a non-Linux user to use.

A plugin for emulators to support zip files would be awesome (gameex has this)

I'm confused here.  MAME and UME already supports ZIP files -- the vast majority of the emulators support this as well.  Why would we need a 'plugin' to support zip files?

I don't believe that GroovyArcade has PSX or DreamCast emulators.  As far as the whole 'working from a zipfile', that's fairly unfeasible.  Many of the emulators that work from ZIPfiles actually decompress it to RAM, as they are ROM files that need fast addressing anyway.

ZIPs are not a seekable block-aligned format, so every time a read needs to happen, performance will tank.  The best way to deal with this is to either use a block-aligned compression format, or use compressed disk images.

This is why Mame uses CHD's -- they are not being arbitrary in coming up with their own disk format -- these are block-aligned compressed formats.   If the PSX emulation in UME is any good, you might convert your ISO files to CHD's, and then you'd have the block-aligned compression that you need.

Here's a thought I've had for awhile..

Any chance to incorporate a disk/partition backup tool (partimage or similar) in the GroovyArcade ISO?

Not related to GroovyArcade as such, but a 15Khz supported live CD backup tool so people can backup their machines (Windows or Linux) would be handy IMO.

IMHO there is already everything:
- mkfs (create file system)
- fdisk (manipulate partitions)
- dd (backup data)

Yeah, not very user friendly though.

Although im using Windows for my cab, I want to ask for a feature that perhaps can be implemented in the future.

A screen test/patterns/color bars options, thats easily accessible, after boot or something. I have a laptop with an onboard ATI card, and would like to go check some monitors out sometime in the future. Being able to just plug the laptop, boot from a usb flash and test them, would make the cherrypicking process so much easier...

Unfortunately GroovyArcade is not an option for laptops, at least the way you suggest. For laptops, the VGA output is second device, and SDL can't resolve this yet. SDL 2.0 is supposed to fix this AFAIK.

Correct me if im wrong, but SDL is only needed for running MAME from what I know.

Some test patterns could be displayed from the command line, like they do those command line backgrounds and loading screens on many distributions, without the need for SDL. Or as a standalone app?

And since we are able to get the command line to run in 15khz, it seems possible?

Yes, I think you are right. However I'm a bit lost when it comes to Linux.
