Title: any chance of a newer CRT-Emudriver based on 11?
Post by: androtaz08 on November 06, 2011, 11:09:40 am
I love the custom drivers but They seem to run most other more graphic card intensive emulators really slowly. With the current drivers I can play MVSC2 perfect on demul or makaron. But with using the older catalyst they slow right down. are there limitations with using a newer version as a base for crt-emudriver

Hi adrotaz08,

I have no experience with Catalyst 11, however the key question here is if modern versions of the driver support the same old method for defining custom video modes that we use with the old Catalyst 9 (same registry keys and format).

Basically, if Soft-15khz works with those drivers then it's likely that VMMaker will work too, as VMMaker actually uses the same registry methods documented by SailorSat.

Have a look at this thread:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=114551.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=114551.0)

You might help us by testing VMMaker with Catalyst 11. In order to do that edit VMMaker.ini and enable the "AnyCatalyst" option and set "TotalModes = 60".

Even if it works, you'll be limited to 60 video modes. And I can't say if the dynamic modeline support (the key feature which GroovyMAME exploits) will even work. Finally, the "magic modeline" feature, which definitely is a damned hack, may easily blue-screen your system with those untested drivers.

If all that worked, then there could be a good reason at some point to try and  patch a newer version of Catalyst, which is a horribly tedious and uncertain task, just to remove the 60 modelines limit, however I don't know if I'd be able to gather the energies to go through the process again, specially considering the amount of work that GroovyMAME still needs before things finally work as they should.

What's the rest of your system? I'm running his drivers on a very modest HD4250 can can run MVSC2 on Makaron just fine, as well as NullDC for may other games. Even SFIVAE runs fine.

But what did you test exactly?

If it's driver related just start in safe mode and reinstall the driver.

Hello,

config:
adm 5000+
4 g ram
hd4870
xp 32 bits
j-pac

dl-> 11-9_xp32_dd_ccc_ocl drivers
uninstall all previous Ati installation (ccleaner)

then install via vnc and dl the proper package to (with magic resolution) and make modification in Vmmaker.ini and enable the "AnyCatalyst" option and set "TotalModes = 60" with  monitor set to "h9110".

windows seems to loop after loading and failled to display anything.  Blackscreen in 31 khz.

"restauring best configuration before" solve the problem -> return to 9.3 :)

it's hard to work in 31 khz desynch ;) without vga monitor^^

Thaks a lot for the test, caskad.

I wouldn't have tried it with the "magic" resolutions but anyway it looks like there might be problems with custom resolutions in newer drivers. I'll do some tests here too when I have some time and a system to mess with.
