Title: New Stern Transformers Pin?- $3K REALLY?
Post by: MameMaster! on October 03, 2012, 09:26:07 am
I don't mind the stripped down look, or the physically smaller cabinet- but $3K? Way too much- even with Amazon shipping it for free.

I wouldn't pay more than $1K to $1500K MAX. Even that may be too much for this plastic sided cabinet.

Thoughts?

You can't tell much of anything other than construction from the photos.  All you can really tell from those pics is that it doesn't have a DMD, which obviously means it's a totally different game, and that the cabinet looks cheap.

The company has slowly but surely gone downhill since Lord of the Rings.

Snark all you want.  Lord of the Rings is the only one that could pass as a 90s Bally Williams (and I'm far from a Bally Williams snob).  I don't care for The Simpsons but I can understand why some people like it.  But Lord of the Rings was kind of their pinnacle of theme integration and custom junk on the playfield.  You can look at the games that came immediately after it and the quality just drops off a cliff (though I enjoyed Elvis and Ripley's).

Premier/Gottlieb had Stargate, Stern had Lord of the Rings.

I saw just a larger picture of the same thing.  Looks like a cardboard "backglass" too.

There are "Pro" versions for $5700 MSRP, and LE versions for $7000 that are "real" pinballs...

Stern, the world's only maker of "real" pinball games, makes a fake pinball game...

You're losing me here.  Yeah, it's not a full blown commercial pinball machine, but that doesn't make it fake.  $3000 does make it way overpriced but it's still a pinball machine.

I wonder if they think the Transformers license is strong enough that the Transformers collector community will carry this.  The pinball community certainly won't.

Well, who knows... those Bally home models aren't terrible and they were quite expensive and I've heard they were successful (before my time).

Zizzle was supposedly going to do something like this and it never materialized.

The Bally pins at least feel like a commercial model of the time.  Back then the reference point wasn't a DMD game with the home model being a stripped down alphanumeric.

That's actually a good question.  Are those displays even alphanumeric?

You mean the ones that say STERN PINBALL in the promo shot?

Gee whiz, Chad.

Heh, I hadn't zoomed in.   ;D

Still, there's a big difference between DMD and alphanumeric.  Back then it was a lot easier to strip something down but still have it feel close to the commercial version.  The comparison was an EM.  IIRC those home models, while Solid State, were finished by around 1978.

I'd sell my Virtual Solar Ride for 3 grand. I think it would have a lot better and longer entertainment value: (http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z182/phatcaddydaddy/Solar%20Ride%20Digital%20Pinball/IMAG0253.jpg)
