Title: Pi 3+ power supply?
Post by: 1500points on July 06, 2018, 11:13:07 pm
Got out the 3+ tonight to try it out.  Didn’t have one usb power supply in the house that will keep it running.

Where is the cheapest place to get whatever size supply these things need?

I browsed arrow and saw one for about $14 which seems pricey for a little pi project???

Thanks

I get mine from Amazon, canakit brand, they are $10 and put out a consistent voltage.

The official one works a charm: https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/raspberry-pi-universal-power-supply/ (https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/raspberry-pi-universal-power-supply/) and is about 9 dollars.

I went to order from the list of designated vendors at that site got to end.  Total on two was $17.  Shipping was $13. No thanks.  Geesh.
What vendor to get that official supply that won’t rape on shipping?
I tried newark. Chicago said sold out.  I am in US.

in the meantime, I checked amazon but prices were higher.  Found an official raspberry pi power supply on ebay for 12.77 with free shipping. I guess that'll work.

uconn Micro USB with On / Off Switch at Amazon. The on/off switch is great!  3A supply is more than enough to run all the USB ports. About $8.00 Free shipping with Prime.

I'm not sure why you are having issues with this.

If you are connecting the power supply to the Pi with anything besides the cable that came with the power supply, you could be loosing voltage on the additional wire.

I have found several of the cheap micro usb extension cables to be very poor quality.
The wires inside the cable are very small and will produce a voltage drop, which the pi dont like.

Also, if you have a arcade cabinet power supply laying around you can use it to power the Pi. Just put a volt meter on it first and make sure it is set to put out 5 volts. Most of those power supplies have a pot you can adjust to get approx 4.5 to approx 6.5 volts out on the 5 volt terminals. Pi dont like high voltage either. 5-5.2 is probably about right.

thanks.
the pi ps arrived and it works great with the 3+.  Guess I'll just need to include that as an extra cost with the pi builds!

thanks for all of the input!
