Someone would stay with XP , someone have really not had any problems with Vista .On the other hand Linux is free and there are so many versions of it, media, server etc. In it's modern state, Linux is ...
I like Linux because it's more secure and currently has a graphical user interface that puts it out ahead of Windows and Mac OS X.
However, while it is nice to not have to pay for anti-virus software, or .........why you like to stay with Linux ?

The fact that Linux is free isn't really a significant gain for me, as I have an extra legit copy of Windows on hand that I could use. The advanced GUI doesn't really mean much either-- I have my build set to log in automatically and run Wah!Cade on startup so I almost never see the GUI anyway.
The most important reason to use Linux is because most distributions are generally lighter on resources than Windows. I have a ten-year-old Compaq in my cabinet that runs Lubuntu three times more efficiently than it ran Windows XP.
Of course I also like using Linux because of the challenge. Nobody uses it because it's easier to use than Windows, that's for certain.

I stay with it because its the only "desktop" machine I've had for 20yrs (yes, I'm one of those "ran a 0.9 kernel back in ~92-93" guys).
Have run it on my MAME cabinet here for years too. Only things I've been interested in running on it that I've had troubles with are "Visual Pinball", "Future Pinball", and "Chankast". Other than that, I've got everything running as I'd like it.

Simple. Linux doesn't have bloat. You can run it better on legacy machines.

Same as bleargh, I call me lucky having moved from AmigaOS to NetBsd on my Amiga 4000 and then on Linux when I bought my first PC in 95, as a Unix administrator and Python programmer I always managed to stay away from Windows.
I use Linux on my Cab because is the system I know best and the best system ;)

Same as bleargh, I call me lucky having moved from AmigaOS to NetBsd on my Amiga 4000 and then on Linux when I bought my first PC in 95, as a Unix administrator and Python programmer I always managed to stay away from Windows.
I use Linux on my Cab because is the system I know best and the best system ;)
I'm learning Python for HCI. I think of all the time wasted not learning it earlier. ;D

The same reason as most people here; it's free, fast, stable, no viruses to speak of.
I use Lubuntu on my cabinet with hardware up to 8 years old, but it still runs well.

Also look for "GroovyArcade" - it's a self contained, bootable Linux/MAME in a box, which can also be installed if you want to - I do. It's better that way!
