Title: All Killer, No Filler MAME Gamelists Directory
Post by: BadMouth on February 23, 2016, 09:16:41 pm
EDIT: Banane has updated the batch file to work with the MAME v0.244 romset.  It is attached to reply #106 http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,149708.msg1755952.html#msg1755952 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,149708.msg1755952.html#msg1755952)
I have not verified.

This is a work in progress DONE!, but I thought it made sense to go ahead and make a directory so people who discover the project can see what lists are available and which ones haven't been done yet.

All killer/No filler gamelists per genre for people who are interested in quality over quantity.
Yes it's subjective, but I trust the judgement of people with a passion for a genre.
This is not about listing every game in a genre.
That would put us right back up to scrolling through thousands of games, most of which suck.

Arcade games only, plain old joystick controls only.

I understand not every game on these lists is "killer", but it sounds better than
"you probably won't miss any games not on this list because they are either redundant in respect to games already on the list or they just aren't that good"

JUST BECAUSE A GAME IS IN THIS LIST DOES NOT MEAN IT IS WORKING 100% CORRECTLY IN MAME.
LOTS OF GREAT GAMES ARE PERFECTLY PLAYABLE, BUT HAVE SMALL SOUND OR GRAPHICS ISSUES CAUSING THEM TO BE LISTED AS NOT PERFECTLY EMULATED IN MAME.
DO NOT USE A NO-NAG VERSION OF MAME AND THEN COMPLAIN TO MAME DEVS AFTER YOU'VE REMOVED THE GIANT RED BOX THEY PUT THERE TO INFORM YOU THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE GAME.  IF YOU FEEL THE NEED TO ASK ABOUT AN ISSUE, ALWAYS TEST WITH THE UNADULTERATED OFFICIAL MAME BUILD FIRST.

Here are the categories as of now:
(bat file for just the games on an individual list are attached to the first post on their individual thread)

SHMUPS (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,149578.0.html) - done.

VsFIGHTERS (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,149619.0.html) - done.

SPORTS (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,149640.0.html) - done.

PUZZLES (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,149693.0.html) - done.

RUN 'N GUN  (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,149734.0.html)- done.

BEAT 'EM UP/HACK 'N SLASH (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,149833.0.html) - done.

PLATFORM (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,150036.0.html) - done.

CLASSICS (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,150071.0.html) - done.

bat file attached which will copy all the necessary roms (including required bios and sound board roms) over from a full romset.
(change the extension to .bat and place it in your rom folder.  Then click on it and it will create a new folder named _NoFiller inside your rom folder and copy all the necessary roms to it.)

ROM names and needed bios files correct as of MAME v.170
I play tested all the individual bat files this was created from, but have not play tested my way through this overall one.
Let me know if anything is missing.

FINAL NUMBERS:

630 games including those commented out.  The batch file may contain more than this since I included multiple versions of a few games so the user could pick which works best for them.  (2 or 4 player version, Budweiser Tapper or Root Beer Tapper, etc)

I'm using split sets, these numbers may vary depending on type of set and compression method.

4.16 GB roms vs 53.4 GB for full MAME romset.
5.7 GB CHDs vs 370 GB for full MAME set (...and 4GB of that is Gauntlet Legends and Dark Legacy)
Total collection including CHDs, sound samples and artwork is under 10GB vs 423.4 GB for the full set.
Most people are probably looking at around 5GB if they ditch the CHDs their computer isn't fast enough to run.

Batch file for the entire collection is attached.
Rotary joystick games are included.  See the individual Run N Gun thread for instructions on how to configure the controls in MAME so they work properly using buttons to rotate.

The following CHDs are needed:

jojo
kinst
kinst2
mace
sfiii3
hyperath
nagano98
blitz
gauntdl
gauntleg

Sound Samples which can be found here: http://samples.mameworld.info/ (http://samples.mameworld.info/) are needed for the following games:

Astro Blaster
Buck Rogers
Carnival
Space Panic
Vanguard
Zaxxon

There are samples available for some of the other games on the list, but I couldn't tell where they were missing any sounds on MAME v.170.
You may or may not need others depending on what release of MAME you are using.
These go in the samples folder in your MAME folder.

Artwork files are needed for Asteroids Deluxe and Space Invaders background and overlay.
They can be found here: http://mrdo.mameworld.info/mame_artwork_ingame.php?p=1#here (http://mrdo.mameworld.info/mame_artwork_ingame.php?p=1#here) and here: http://mrdo.mameworld.info/mame_artwork_ingame.php?p=14#here (http://mrdo.mameworld.info/mame_artwork_ingame.php?p=14#here)
These go in the artwork folder in your MAME folder.

EDIT: If your rom files are 7z instead of zip, see this post:http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,149708.msg1622967.html#msg1622967 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,149708.msg1622967.html#msg1622967)[/b]

EDIT:
I ran all the killer no filler gamelists against the 3p/4p simultaneous nplayer list for Mame and came up with a single list of all the games for more than 2 players at once. Good for us pedestal types.
See Reply #44 http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,149708.msg1636501.html#msg1636501 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,149708.msg1636501.html#msg1636501)

Thank You!

Besides the obvious benefit of the reduced list, I'm curious to see the final size of the mame part of this set.  I know space is cheap but it's still takes a while to back-up 60 gigs when this is most of what people want and will be just a tiny piece of that.

Wanna say, "Thanks for all the hard work!" as this is a great idea for the new folks. I'm building both a bartop for my son and a cab for me and have struggled mightily with what to put on them. First it was EVERYTHING under the sun, but soon realized that there was no way to actually play everything.

So, I'll keep a complete Mame romset (as well as Console sets) on a master drive, then pull off titles from these lists to put on my projects. Then, if need be, add a few here and there when the need arises.

Once again, "Thanks...!"

Thanks for the excellent lists! I found a few games in each list that I never saw nor tried, and now they're added to my cab.

Any chance of compiling a light gun list? I have quite a few on my cab right now, and would love to compare. If you like I can post them or send the list your way. Dont want to hijack the thread. Thanks! :applaud:

I think I've said this before already but I just want to say a big thanks for BM and everyone helping put these lists together.  Too many games actually makes your arcade machine suck.  It makes it way more about the front end and way less about the actual games.  You spend most of the time trying out games that look cool on hyperspin but don't work at all or don't work with your controls, or just suck.  I've just got to add a few lightgun games (most suck) and trackball and spinner games.

Anywhoo, thanks again.

no who wants to take the time and do one for the nes, snes, and genesis?
I know it's hit or miss, but there are a lot of games that work great on a cab like battle toads.. and I'm drawing a blank... but others

To me most of the games on the classic consoles mentioned above play just fine on arcade controls.  From the Super Marios to the sports games the difference between a two, three or 6 button gamepad or arcade controls doesn't make the games unplayable.  I agree most were intended for the couch/controller but most guests that come over spend most of the time nostaliga-ing over the old cartridge titles, playing them for a few minutes then seeing what else they forgot about.

I would be interested in some of the newer consoles (N64/Dreamcast/GC/PS1) that graduated to the analog sticks - some of these titles play surprisingly well with arcade controls.  ie) Mario Kart 64/Double Dash!!, Mario Tennis, Super Strikers, etc.  A lot of the time there are two buttons that have very little use, maybe to change views for example, and the difference between analog and digital controls is negligible to 99% of the people who will play at the cabinet.

It would be a huge undertaking and would take at least as long as this list did to put together. With NES it would be rather easy. Between Playchoice 10 and Nintendo VS. you'll already have about 80-90% of the stuff that will work really well in a cabinet.

There's a ton of Genesis games that will work well in a cabinet, probably at least 90. Same thing with the Turbografx 16, there's probably 35 high quality shmups alone.

Once you get to the SNES, they added shoulder buttons and controls can get awkward in an arcade cabinet. They'll work, but you'll spend a lot of time with every game finding the best mappings.

I wish I could find a better layout for the snes.
Y X L
B A R
that is my current layout. it works good for mortal kombat. but like  super Mario and dk country are akward. to run you have to hold t and jump with b.

Although I'm not a fan of console games in my arcade cab based on my experience with it, I would concur with Dave that the NES games are fine, but the SNES and above just don't feel right. Damn shoulder buttons.

maybe I should take the time to do a write up 4 or less button snes games with the perfect layout.
battle toads in battlemaniacs for example is great on a cab.

I thought it would be cool back when I built my first stick, but it really wasn't. Even for older games I prefer controllers. I keep two of each of the originals around with usb adapters.

Yes, I've done just that for every game in my favorites lists. Over half my console games required button mapping which deviated from the standard mapping I have for the console. If somebody takes on the job (of both creating the lists and finding the best button mapping per game), perhaps my documentation can help create a starting point. Even given that my idea of a good mapping scheme for any individual game may be at odds with a majority view, it seems my 50 or so console game documentation would make a better starting point than starting from scratch.

I'm attaching two example game documents, one SNES game and one Genesis game. I have a six-button control panel. The bottom row is a red button, then a blue one, and then a yellow one. The top row goes orange, blue yellow. So the larger-sized circles represent the physical layout of the buttons. The roman numeral in the top right indicates the number of simultaneous players (as far as I'm concerned, hot-seat or taking-turns games may as well be single-player). The circles below the roman numeral indicate the button sequence which gets you from the initial screen to actually playing the game.

Calling it DONE for now!  Batch file & final tallies are on the first post.
I have no intention of being obligated to keep this updated through revisions of MAME, but I may add on a missed game here and there.

It's not the list to end all lists, but it gives someone a reasonable starting point for whittling it down to their own tastes.
630 isn't an unrealistic number of games to play test over time.

Thanks to all that contributed.

Awesome! :applaud:

This should be a sticky.  I PM'd Saint but no reply.

I'll be using a second Mame wheel on my hyperspin setup with just these games.  Same game/CHD folders but just using the batch files to edit the wheel images.  That way I still have a full wheel to "show off" (themes only) and an actual usable wheel.

Just stopping by to say thank you for your hard work and to tell you that I'm adding your list as one of the filters for a brand new list generator I'm introducing in a few weeks.
Someone at the Launchbox forums mentioned that this would be a cool little feature and I agreed to add it as a filter overwrite :)

Not sure if anyone else will find this useful, but I made a Mame UI category file out of these awesome lists. Unzip the attached file and place the "allkiller.ini" file in the "folders" directory in your mame install (v.172 or later). When you launch mame without a rom name (or use MameUI) you can select "categories", then "allkiller.ini" and choose from any of the the All Killer No Filler categories.

Thanks again to BadMouth for putting these together!

They weren't working earlier but they are definitely working for me now. sorry for false alarm

Are the NAOMI, Model 2 and 3, Atomiswave, and Type X games playable in MAME? I thought MAME couldn't play any of these systems due to compatibility issues and no modern PC's being fast enough to handle the emulation

No, they aren't playable in MAME.
Most of what's in the full MAME romset isn't playable.
That's why they are listed separately.
Since they aren't playable in MAME, they aren't included in the batch files.

I have my front end (Mala) set up to include these games in lists alongside the MAME games, but launch them on their respective emulator.  It's complicated though and Mala no longer works with new versions of MAME without workarounds.

I think Launchbox incorporates ways to do this, but I haven't tried that front end yet.  My setup is working, so no reason to redo it with something newer.

Thanks for the help. Don't laugh but I am running these games on a PC hooked up to my TV and I plan on running everything from the Mame core in Retroarch using an xbox 360 controller. No fancy arcade cab or Frontend setup for me.

I do have a few more questions. I have a list of Light gun games and 270 wheel racing games and I would like to copy them over into separate folders similar to what you have done here for other genres.

1. Based on the reading I have done it seems that the 270 degree wheel games should work fine with a xbox 360 controller (though I am sure many purists would be offended by this). Is my assumption correct?

2. For Light gun games I could probably get away with rigging a wiimote up with ppjoy correct? (I dont have the money to shell out for an aimtrack)

3. Most important question - Since I have my list of games I want to copy over (I am using split sets), what is the best way to go about finding all of the games and necessary files to run them (CHDs, Bios, etc)? Is there a way to automate this or a program that will tell me? I am guessing I only need parent roms because if I understand correctly clones for the most part are just variations of the games and I am not really interested in that (except in situations where the clone runs in MAME but not the parent, and how would I be able to identify this situation without manual testing?)

Sorry if this is not the right place for me to ask this question. If it isnt I can repost elsewhere. I am a complete noob who just wants a decent setup on my PC and any help is greatly appreciated

I'm not familiar with Retroarch or how the MAME build it uses varies from the real MAME build.  A lot of time these alternate versions are missing options or behave differently.
Depending on which version of MAME it's based off of, some of the rom names might not even be correct for it

1. Should be no problem, but it' not plug and play like the standardized JAMMA joystick games.  See the MAME section of the driving cab info thread stickied in the driving cab subforum.

2. As far from plug and play as it gets.  If you have dozens of hours to invest in configuring it.  Also no idea if it will work with retroarch.  Buying a Mayflash Dolphin Bar will cut out a lot of the configuration pain.

3. I used http://www.progettoemma.net/ (http://www.progettoemma.net/) when making these lists, then play tested the games and MAME would tell me if anything else was missing.  Click on the British flag at the top of the menu on the left for English.

I can't walk you through this stuff.  You just have to jump in and fiddle with it until you start to understand how MAME works.
When something doesn't work, figure out why, then move forward with your increased knowledge.
By the time you work past a few problems, you'll have an idea how to fix the next problem when you come to it.

Thanks alot for this list!  :applaud:

Took me a little while to realise, but your list is copying .Zip files, and my ROM pack was in .7z  :dizzy:

If anyone else is having the same issue, I redid the list so it now copy's .7z.

Testet with MAME pack 0.181, and you get 650 files.

If your pack is in .rar or anyone format, just open the file in Notepad (remember is has to be named .txt for this) and use the "Search / Replace" function in notepad, takes about 10 sec.

Brilliant work m8, brilliant  :notworthy:

First of all, thank you for this list!  In the past I've obsessed over having complete sets for different MAME versions, but never play 99% of the games.  This list helps narrow it down.

I've written a couple of one-liners, using bash, to figure out which samples and CHDs you will need for your chosen subset of ROMs and corresponding MAME version.  I did this because I use the MAME2003 and MAME2010 cores from RetroArch which use 0.78 and 0.139, respectively.  Anyway, I know that a lot of people don't use Linux or bash, but hope this is useful.  Perhaps I'll rewrite them using standard Windows cmd prompt commands.  In the meantime, here they are:
Code: [Select]
for i in $(ls -1 *.zip) ;do /drives/e/MAME/mame139/mame.exe -listxml $(basename $i .zip) |grep -v '<!' |grep -q '<disk name' && echo CHD needed: $(basename $i .zip); done
for i in $(ls -1 *.zip) ;do /drives/e/MAME/mame139/mame.exe -listxml $(basename $i .zip) |grep -v '<!' |grep -q '<sample name' && echo Samples needed: $(basename $i .zip); done

By the way, my machine in running Windows!  I use a package called MobaXterm, which is free to use, which gives me a bash-like shell and commands.  All you have to do is "cd" to your _NoFiller directory and be sure to have the correct path to the correct mame.exe.  Just note that you need forward slashes in the path and use "/drives/X" instead of "X:".  I hope this helps and isn't too daunting for non-Linux people.

Update:
I went ahead and rewrote the same one-liners using Windows cmd prompt commands:
Code: [Select]
for %I in (*.zip) do @E:\MAME\mame139\mame.exe -listxml %~nI |find "<disk name" >nul && echo CHD needed: %~nI
for %I in (*.zip) do @E:\MAME\mame139\mame.exe -listxml %~nI |find "<sample name" >nul && echo Samples needed: %~nI

Example run (specific to my chosen ROMs):
Code: [Select]
E:\MAME\mame139\roms\_NoFiller>for %I in (*.zip) do @E:\MAME\mame139\mame.exe -listxml %~nI |find "<sample name" >nul && echo Samples needed: %~nI
Samples needed: astinvad
Samples needed: astrob
Samples needed: buckrog
Samples needed: carnival
Samples needed: congo
Samples needed: gorf
Samples needed: journey
Samples needed: panic
Samples needed: qbert
Samples needed: rallyx
Samples needed: vanguard
Samples needed: wow
Samples needed: zaxxon

I just stumbled upon this forum... Thanks for sharing your curated MAME list!

I always wanted to make do something similar to trim down the thousands of games available to older 8bit console.... something to get down to collections of games that are not utterly overwhelming. To do so I went ahead and wrote a script to scrape metacritic.com and gamerankings.com to build lists of scores I could use to achieve quality over quantity.

Feel free to grab the data here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0BwsYd1k8t0lEfmJPcE5UOGMwekt1TFRWbXZjd0pZUmw0T0ZkTkV0RlBmb2ROV0w2V3FpNkU

There are two folders, one for metacritic, one for gamerankings. Gamerankings.com probably has more useful info since they aggregate scores from various review sites (including metacritic). Under each you'll find review lists grouped per system. And in gamerankings.com's case I made subgroups for how many reviews were available... So for example if you want to make a list of SNES games that were heavily marketed and have an average 80% score, pick the list where each game had at least 10 reviews. If you don't want to miss the occasional gem that fell through the crack, go for the list that had at least 1 review...

Anyways, hopefully someone here will find this data useful and use it to come up with nice concise lists for consoles games.

I just wanted to thank you guys for the list.  I collected each ROM by hand yesterday, because I didn't want to wait for a 100+ gig download, only to pull out the few ROMs and CHDs I needed.  Your selections obviously helped me a ton, and each time I thought of a game I wanted to play that I thought would stump the list, it was in there:)

Before I go crazy downloading art and making a custom wheel, I figured I'd see if anyone else had a stock Hyperspin wheel and accoutrements they'd be willing to post to match?  If not, I'll post one in this thread when I create one.
Title: Re: All Killer, No Filler MAME Gamelists Directory
Post by: THP on January 01, 2018, 05:30:09 pm
OK, this was easier than I thought.  I just whipped up a quick batch file to go through my nofiller ROM dir, and copy wheel images from a MAME full ROM repository I found.  Pretty basic stuff, but it might help someone less technically inclined loop through their no filler to do housekeeping/copying.   Here it is, and you'll obviourly need to tweak the directories to something that matches your systems.  Once this was done, I just copied the contents of artTemp over to my nofiller wheel images directory, and done!

@echo off
md artTemp
for %%f in (*) do (
  echo %%~nf
  copy "C:\HyperSpin\Media\MAME\Images\Wheel\%%~nf.png" artTemp
)

Dig into romlister or find a half decent controls.ini and run a cross-reference between that and a master list of the AKNF list.

Romlister was a handy dandy tool that spit out lists of your roms with search strings by control. It wasnt perfect because the controls.ini that is required to make it work isn't perfect. But it was close. Anyway, I don't think that romlister plays nice with .7z files (maybe it does, I don't recall), but you can always batch rename them to .zip and run your search then back convert since romlister is only looking for rom names and not doing anything specific with the file.

edit: Looks like it's been updated in the past few years so it might be good to go without too much fiddling. https://www.waste.org/~winkles/ROMLister/ (https://www.waste.org/~winkles/ROMLister/)

I do not know.  Probably mostly, if not all.

ALso for the future Mame releases, how can one update the gamelist to stay up to date? Where can we find infos on changes in ROM names and needed bios files?

You'd have to manually look through every whatsnew release notes:
http://mamedev.org/oldrel.html (http://mamedev.org/oldrel.html)

Myself, I would probably just use it as-is and then wait until I come accross something that doesn't work.

I'm not so much into this stuff any more and have no motivation to keep it updated.
The games themselves aren't going to change.
The lists themselves have been incorporated into a couple front-ends.  I don't know how it was handled there, so those may keep up with the changes automatically.
I'm still on v.146 (or thereabouts) on my cab.

Something like
Code: [Select]
ls > contents.txt on mac/linux will put filenames in a txt file. I’m sure there is a command to pop off the extension. After, somehow compare to list for attract mode. Will work on later. If anyone wants to help, post up. Probably a good idea to stay up to date, and tag in repo if any changes.

I made a bash script that will help the process of copying the "All Killer No Filler" rom list.

Considering that people have MAME roms in either .zip or .7z format, I have changed the list's format to contain only the rom name. The script then asks for the target files' extension, so no changes are needed on the list itself. It would be nice if someone made a bash script on the same format.

At the end the script will list the rom names not found and generate an output file with these names. Later on, the user may pass this file as an input file (maybe running the script pointing to another rom dir, with different extension) or manually pick the missing roms.

Hope it helps someone out there. Any feedback is appreciated.

PS.: rename the "mame_aknf.txt" to ".sh" as the shell script extension is not accepted.

Code: [Select]
Bash shell script that copies specific MAME rom files, based on a list of names in a text file.
This script's creation was based on the "All Killer, No Filler" rom list thread available at [http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=149708.0].

Parameters:
-i [Required]         Input file. Path to a text file containing one rom name per line. The rom names must not
have an archive extension (.zip, .7z, etc). Rom names starting with "::" will be ignored.

Usage: ./mame_aknf.sh -i [input_file]

Hello everyone!

I'm a longtime lurker..but I just had to log in and say thank you for these filter scripts.

I had a HyperSpin PC MAME machine that I spent weeks configuring..and after working for a few months it completely crapped out.

Any who..I'm using AdvanceMame 3 on RetroPie now - and these came in handy to 99% rebuild my smaller collection.

My cabinet is a four-player NBA Jam with only 3 buttons....so I actually can't use any fighters.

I took the vs fighter script and modified it so it actually deletes all of the fighter roms.

You can do this with any of there scripts, actually.

Just open in NotePad++ and do a find/replace

Replace 'Copy' > 'Del'

Replace "_NoFiller" with '' (nothing)

Anyway, here's the script.

Thanks again!
Just rename the extension, put it into the _NoFiller directory, and double click!

I am not sure what exactly you're asking, but given that Neo-Geo doesn't have too many titles and they don't take up lots of space, I have a Neo-Geo section that is essentially a different recipe 161 in 1. I would start there and just delete anything you find redundant or poopy.

I hope I didn't miss the answer to this, but I'm using MAME 0.200 and some of the files are missing (or their name has changed in the newer version of MAME). Is there a command I can add to the .bat file which will make it NOT close the window after it's done copying so I can sort through whichever ones aren't copying over (because they're missing), then manually try to find those?

Think I have something like 530 out of 600+ so there's quite a few missing.
Title: Re: All Killer, No Filler MAME Gamelists Directory

I ran all the killer no filler gamelists against the 3p/4p simultaneous nplayer list for Mame and came up with a single list of all the games for more than 2 players at once. Good for us pedestal types.

Now my kids don't have to go hunting for a game when they have friends over and decide to switch from TMNT to the Cowboys of Moo-Mesa or whatever. I think there are a few errors on the list, but it's a good 95% solution for those interested.

List is attached.

I fixed this list so it's .zip instead of .7z (so it matches the others, and I personally have romsets which only use .zip). Change .txt to .bat.

QUESTION from a noob...I'm going through this list, Crime Fighters is linked to crimefght.zip (2-player ONLY), BUT the 4-player one is crimefghtu. I'm using a merged set. How do I get it (through this _Multi List) to load the crimefghtu version instead? crimefghtu is listed in my regular list (of ALL games), but I can't figure out how to get it to load this particular one (and unzipping it doesn't do it either...).

I updated this to include the _Multi (3 and 4 player games) as well. Change .txt to .ini and put in C:\mame\folders (like millercentral said!).

Is there a command I can add to the .bat file which will make it NOT close the window after it's done copying so I can sort through whichever ones aren't copying over (because they're missing), then manually try to find those?

pause. This waits for a keypress, after that the window is closed.

You can also direct the output into a .txt file which makes finding the missing files more comfortable.

Open the .bat file with a text editor. It should look something like this

md _vertshmups
copy 1942.zip _vertshmups
::copy 1943.zip _vertshmups
copy 1943u.zip _vertshmups
copy 19xx.zip _vertshmups
copy aerofgts.zip _vertshmups
copy vspsx.zip _vertshmups
copy agalletu.zip  _vertshmups
::copy agallet.zip _vertshmups
copy batrideru.zip _vertshmups
::copy batrider.zip _vertshmups
copy batsugunsp.zip _vertshmups
::copy batsugun.zip _vertshmups

Now go into the search and replace menu, choose replace and replace

.zip _vertshmups

with

.zip _vertshmups >>error.txt

Save and start the .bat file. When it's done, you will have an error.txt file in the destination directory (that would be _vertshmups in my example). Open error.txt in a text editor, look at the first error message, copy some of the text and use the search function to hop from error to error.

Cool. Thanks. So basically just add ">>error.txt" (with a space before it) to the end of every .zip file listed and I can then look at the error.txt and find which ones are missing. I will do that!

If you want to copy all the roms in the list, download the _nofiller.txt file from the first post and rename the extension from .txt to .bat. Place the file in your MAME rom directory and double click it to start it. It will create a new folder inside the rom directory and then copies all the roms from the list into it.

If you only want to use one or more categories (i.e. only shmups and beat'em ups), go to the first post, follow the links for the categories and download the .txt files. Rename the extension from .txt to .bat, place the file(s) in your MAME rom directory and double click it to start them (it). This will create a new folder (new folders) inside the rom directory and then the roms from the list(s) are copied into it (them).

After that, move all the rom files from the MAME rom directory into a backup directory. Then move all the rom files from your newly created directories into the main rom directory. That's it.

After you have tested the games, you can delete the backup directory.

Hey guys, I think I have done everythng right but the new file created in my rom folder is empty?  I changed the file to .bat and when I run it inside my rom folder the command prompt runs for a few seconds and the file is created in the rom folder but its empty.   Anyone have any ideas?  Im sure im missing something simple.

edit: ok i paused the process after I ran the bat file and it says "the system cannot find the file specified" after each game

2nd edit:  do i need to already have all these games and this bat file simply organizes my list for me?

Correct.

The .bat file does not find/download the ROMs for you. (see Rule 5 (http://new.arcadecontrols.com/arcade_message_rules.html))

It copies the needed files for these games from a full ROMset in the "roms" folder to a "_NoFiller" sub-folder.

bat file attached which will copy all the necessary roms (including required bios and sound board roms) over from a full romset.
(change the extension to .bat and place it in your rom folder.  Then click on it and it will create a new folder named _NoFiller inside your rom folder and copy all the necessary roms to it.)

Awesome work here, gonna try this when I get home.
One question though, will this work with a new romset or do I need to use a .170 set for it to work?
Thank you!

This is an awesome tool. I can't believe I only heard about it now. Are there any plans to update this for more recent romsets? Also, I wanted to do this on a raspberry pi running retropie. It would be cool if this could be written in python or node something that isn't system dependent so it could work on all systems. Maybe it would be better to host on github or something if updates are planned?

I love the list and I think I only added 3 games to my set once it was done. Games I added:

Go Go Mile Smile -> an interesting action puzzle game. You have to collect items from a maze with monsters that hurt you. You can safely navigate the outside border of the maze, but once you step in you're vulnerable. A button allows you to quickly retreat back to the border zone.
Gain Ground -> One of my favorites growing up. It's a shooter game that requires careful planning and strategy. You have different characters to choose from each stage to complete it and often times you can rescue a new character for new abilities.
Three Wonders -> Three Wonders contains three games from which a player may choose: Midnight Wanderers: Quest for the Chariot is a platform game that sees the player control a hobbit named Lou and his travelling companion, Siva, to run, climb, and shoot at enemies. Chariot: Adventure through the Sky is a shoot 'em up game featuring the characters from Midnight Wanderers, but in a Gradius-esque game. Finally, Don't Pull is a puzzle game that involves you controlling either a rabbit or a squirrel pushing blocks to crush monsters.

This list is God sent. I am using these in retro pie. But, a lot of these have different names(i got only 350 roms). So, i will need to pick them up manually with this list as base. I have similar list for nes, snes and sega genesis/megadrive which took down the number of games to 1/3rd without me missing out any. I have shortlisted 23 (most played) neogeo games and about 33 ps1 (all time favs) games to go along with them. Its a WIP but its comming out to be good for now. Out of these mame was the most difficult and this list have truly made a huge impact and saved so much time for me. Thanks badmouth.

OP, just wanted to say thanks so much for these lists.

I needed the All Killer, No Filler games in a consolidated, single list, and I wanted it in tabular (spreadsheet/Excel/CSV format) for my project, so I wrote a script to do just that. I'm sharing it here in case anyone else finds it useful:
https://github.com/franklesniak/ROMSorter/blob/master/Create-ConsolidatedAllKillerNoFillerGameList.ps1

Please contact me on Github with any follow-ups. I am new to the forums here and unsure how often I'll be signing in.

BTW, I have other similar scripts in the above Github repository that I am working on.

Hey folks, long time no see.

Since I have nothing else to do... I'm updating my cabs for the first time in 5+ years. I haven't been here in a while either, so it was nice to see the All Killer No Filler lists. Maybe I'll do a version of these for special controls...?

Anyway, for those folks who are starting new and fresh, I've run BadMouth's original _NoFiller.txt batch file against Mame .222 and the only game files to throw errors are crimfght2.zip (replace with crimfghtu.zip) and vendetta2.zip (replace with vendetta2pw.zip or whichever version floats your boat.)

All other errors are BIOS/devices related, about 8 instances. Most have just been renamed, and can be tracked easily enough with mameinfo's NEWS.txt.  That said, if you're working with these newer versions of MAME, there's a BIOS/device subset out there that will distinctly simplify the process at a minimal 240MB space premium. Just copy that over after you've done NoFiller, and you'll be good to go, especially if you're thinking of adding any other games later in the process (no need to think about dependencies when they're all already there.)

I have the 0.222 romset and I believe it's ... merged or split? About 50ishGB. Can I use this list? I thought deleting roms created problems with other roms? I'm not really sure how it works. I'm only interested in sports, fighters, and beat 'em ups, so I'd love to use this list.

This list doesn't delete any roms. You place the .bat file(s) into your roms folder, click on it (them), the .bat file(s) create a new folder(s) in your rom folder and copy the required roms there.

When done, you can make a backup folder, move your 50 gigs of roms into it, then move or copy the roms from the all killer folders into your rom folder. Test the games, if all run correctly, you can delete the backup folder.

Awesome list, and thanks for compiling these.  I do have a question though...I'm a complete Noob and starting from scratch.  I understand these were for an older version of Mame, but figured I would download the latest version since I'm starting new.  So will this work with 0223?  I've tried to follow instructions, but the command lines say they can't find any of the files (see attachment)

Any roms which MAMEdev has changed the name of will not work, but there are probably only a few (if any) that have changed.
You should still end up with almost all the files being copied over.

Is the batch file located in the same folder as the full set of MAME roms?
(this does require that you already have a complete set of MAME roms to copy from)

It could also be that your romset is .7z files instead of .zip files.
In that case, see the related note in red at the bottom of the first post.

I created a commit and PR was accepted for nofiller tag list added to attract-mode. I created a plug-in that will copy files based on romlist or tag list. It works with windows, Mac and Linux. Will assemble a commit and PR soon for that soon.

Thanks for your work on this. It's saved me a ton of aggravation and it's crazy that five years later this continues to be an important resource people use to wrangle the chaos that is a MAME romset.

I wanted to ask how you decided which version of a game to include. Was it influenced by parents vs. clones, so that people with a merged set don't break anything? Are there artistic or gameplay differences that might make one version superior to another? Did you try to prioritize the U.S.? I ask because it seems the batch file has some U.S. versions of games but then international versions of others (ex. Japanese Double Dragon, European Dungeons and Dragons). Just curious. I'm thinking of converting my split set to unmerged and tweaking the batch file to prioritize U.S. versions, but will refrain from doing so if there were specific reasons you chose the versions you did.

Thanks again for all you've done for the community.
Title: Re: All Killer, No Filler MAME Gamelists Directory
Post by: BadMouth on January 13, 2021, 09:47:13 pm
IIRC, I went with the parent provided it was in english.
Usually the international was and didn't include the extra "winners don't use drugs" loading screen.

In general, the gameplay in Japanese versions are considered to be more fair while US versions were tweaked to force you to insert more quarters to progress, but I prioritized language.

I don't recall why the Japanese version Double Dragon was chosen.  There might be discussion of it in the beat em up thread, or it may have just been the parent.
.....or I don't have any real reason.

Hello

I've made a too to manage romsets, and I provide pre-built lists : https://cosmo0.github.io/arcade-manager/ (it says Retropie & Recalbox but rom management work for everything)

Would you agree to let me use your lists in my app? I was planning on doing the same kind of list, but if I can use it it'll let me gain much time.

If you don't want I understand, I'll just have to list them myself  :'(

Thanks! :)

Hi, I've been using your lists for quite some time now and I can definitely say they're awesome!

I'd like to expand the AKNF project with roms that only works in other emulators than Mame. I'm starting with these lists I made based on community ratings and that it works on 4/8 way joysticks with 6 buttons + coin/start. I don't want to include gun games, racing games or other non standard control games. I don't know if these games are any good or any bad. I'd like your help to update those lists to fit in the AKNF criteria.

If you look at the threads for the individual lists, games from these emulators are included.  (the ones I thought worthy anyway)

Thanks for replying I just saw that. Still I think it's sad that there's not many people left on this forum to keep such a thread active. Since you made these lists there are so many improvements in emulation and the Mame set. I think it would be great to have the input of arcade connoisseur to relive those lists.

Have a great day!  :) :afro:

....probably mostly.  If MAMEdev have changed the name of a rom or split part of the rom out (like moving a sound board to a separate rom), then those will be missed.

I have no interest in updating it.

I just ran the bat files against Mame 0.235 (non-merged) and found the same issues as previously reported, plus one more.  I believe all the other erros are bios files and/or sound files.  The ones you need to do something with are:
* crimfght2.zip (replace with crimfghtu.zip)
* vendetta2.zip (replace with vendetta2pw.zip or whichever version floats your boat)
* wc90.zip (replace with ?)

It looks like wc90.zip is "Tecmo World Cup '90".  Can someone show me where to look or could you help me identify the replacement in Mame .235?

Also, how do I found out what the different versions are for vendetta2 (vendetta2pd.zip, vendetta2peba.zip, vendetta2pp.zip, vendetta2pu.zip, vendetta2pun.zip, and vendetta2pw.zip)?

Thanks.

I know, there are other solutions around, but to keep it really simple I just updated the original batch file from 2016.

It now works with a 0.244 romset as well.

I'm very noob to .bat files, how do i get this to work with my .244 merged set?

I placed this in my mame 0.244 merged set and renamed the .txt to .bat and double clicked, but nothing happed but made empty folders. with the original file that is what i did and it worked.

any help is much appreciated. thank you

In case it helps anyone, here is one geared for FBNeo (https://github.com/libretro/FBNeo/). Has about 1500 on it, from this list and other top game lists.
No Neo Geo though. Just do a search/replace to update the dir in the file to whatever you want.

My initial FBNeo romset dir had ~7,000 @ ~15GB
My shortlist had about 2,000 on, of which 1,500 seemed to be in the FBNeo set. Which is about 4.3GB (unmerged sets in my case)

You can see the different versions here:

I don't use these lists, but I tested the bat file and it seemed to work for me - it created one folder two levels up, with a name similar to the parent folder, except with _NoFiller appended to the name. In this folder, it placed copies of the few test files I had in my test roms folder. This is a very basic question, but do your roms maybe have a 7z extension instead of a zip extension? If so, replace all .zip with .7z in the batch file. Also, the batch file did not work when I tested it with a space in the name of my folders.  In this case, the folder with _NoFiller appended to the name was created in the same directory where the roms are, and was empty. If you have a space in your folder names, remove it for the batch file to work.

If neither of those ideas help, run the batch file from the command line instead of double-clicking (so the output doesn't disappear when the it finishes executing) and let us know some sample error messages.

This may help show how to create a custom "best game" list using your own criteria:

Hi! I've added the lists to a new wizard in my rom management tool: https://github.com/cosmo0/arcade-manager/releases
I have of course included a link to this forum.

Thanks for all your work :)
