Title: Arcade Invaders Cabinet (was Street Fighter)
Post by: Termin8tor on March 27, 2012, 11:20:27 am
Just thought I'd share my plans for my upcoming full size cabinet. In the past I'd only been able to build bartops (living in a top floor Flat) but now I live in a house and with my GF's permission I can finally start my new project. I've just purchased the monitor, a 19" Samsung 4:3 in mint condition (£16.01 thanks ebay) and already have most of the components needed so things should move fairly quickly.

Things are moving along at a steady pace. I've changed the plans slightly losing the feet and shrinking it slightly. I find the best way to build a cab is around the monitor and having a big cab and small monitor just doesn't work. I haven't decided on a theme yet, all suggestions welcome. I'm going for a 2 player 6 button set up with a coin door. ;)

Small update finished the marquee area and component shelf. Rain stopped progress on cabinet, but managed to get in some game time (testing) with my son.

Decided on a Street Fighter theme after all. I couldn't find a decent moves strip so I made one up, what do you think?

It's cool looking but not really accurate to any of the sf2 variants. If your thinking plain vanilla sf2 world warrior then you might want to remove the moves that don't apply to that game such as all the "super" moves and a lot of the moves that got introduced in later sf2 games. If you want it to be ssf2 turbo type theme then maybe try and add the other characters in somewhere. Possible around the bezel? Just my thoughts. Build is looking real good though.

Thanks for the reply I'am going for the super street fighter 2 turbo look with the other 8 characters on the bottom of the bezel.

First undercoat applied. First I sealed the edges of the MDF with a water+wood glue mix which works pretty well and then added the first coat, let dry overnight and sanded it with a 150grit sand paper. I will probably go with another 2 undercoats using a finer sandpaper each time and finish off with a top coat of a dark blue gloss.

I really like this design, although I am personally going for a variant of the Jakobud cab design... really digging the candy-esque receeded marquee.  Any reason you decided to go this route over a more traditional design?

Also, where are your speakers going?

The main reason for this design was size, the whole cab stands a touch over 5ft and I didn't have a specific design in mind when I started planning I just went with what I wanted in a cab. It wasn't until I started building it that I could see the candy-esque look but also a bit of vewlix and taito in there as well. I guess this cab is inspired by all the cabs Ive seen on here and picked the things I like.

The speakers will be going under the CP area above the coin door partially out of sight with volume control in the middle.

have you tried CPS2shock... they have a lot of Street Fighter and also other fighter games artwork, perhaps you could mimic one of these styles for the main game you want to play on the cabinet.

Eureka  ;D. I bought a coin mech off ebay one that copies the coin in the mech but it just wasn't what I wanted, so after some research I bought a mars ms111 (eBay) and quattro 1 credit board (http://www.andysarcade.net/ (http://www.andysarcade.net/)) hooked them up to my bartop and bingo worked first time. Now 20p gives me 1 credit, 50p-3 credits and £1-7 credits.

Small update. Ive fitted the coin door, applied the top coat of paint (white gloss) and worked on some of the internals.

Fitted the screen today and wired up the speakers. All internals motherboard, HDD and video card are working as they should and didn't take much time as I stripped them out of my first build (weecade clone). Didn't see the point of keeping it as it probably would just sit there gathering dust. Once my son came home from school he tested it out for me, at the time of writing this its been on for about 6 hours so guess that will do. Things to do next week: speaker covers, fit joysticks and buttons, design print marquee + CP, fit light in marquee area. I have spare cathode lights but like results people are getting using LED's so unsure.
Some pics (buttons and Marquee are temporary)

Update time. Today I managed to drill button holes, get the joysticks and buttons mounted and wired up, print out CP and marquee and now I have a fully functional coin mech  ;D.
Tomorrow's plan is to install marquee light, tidy up wiring and make a start on the back depending on the weather. But I'll probably just spend the day playing Street Fighter  ;)

You know, I'm usually not a fan of anything other than the old-fashioned boxy arcade cabinet, but yours turned out really nice. Good job!!!

I agree, inspiration came from a 1975 Jet Fighter cabinet.

Changed Joysticks from Magsticks to balltops after using balltops in my last bartop build and found them much better IMHO. Also changed the artwork while I was at it.

Love the design too!  I like the Arcade Invaders artwork better.  Matches the entire design.

I thought it was pretty badass when it was a SF cab. The new artwork/balltops look solid though. Very, very clean. Hits the "less is more" dead on, imo.
