Not really, I mean, the people on the street are about the same size as me so I blend in perfectly. My brit accent comes out when I am near a fellow brit, but I know what you mean. My phone doesn't have a working camera (its an ishit 7 work makes me use) but next year I will bring in my movie camera. It will be fun.

Still doing the PhD :blah: Not sure about 40K eye trackers, but reasonable enough to do the job. I thought it was you PBJ that was trialling the expensive equipment.
Camera are not really allowed in some sites I visit so it is not a factor. I have one Yashica and two Minolta SLR's with digital backs, and have been a professional photographer for many years. Crappy cameras on crappy iphones and lots of people griefing that their pictures are ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, should invest in a decent camera. My Note 2 had a cool Carl Zeiss camera and that took decent images only for google to stop supporting it. You cannot win. ::)

Well ive spoken to the Ms, And although she likes the idea of coming out for a few weeks and getting zapcon in to she has exams at uni so no can do.
But....
We are due to get married early 2019, And we are thinking we could make it a holiday/honeymoon thing.
Which would be rather cool and make it a honey moon to remember!

There are plenty of cheap flights, but Thomas cook has a charter (around Zapcon) time that costs about 700 quid to Las Vegas from Manchester, then a quick connecting flight to Phoenix for about $130. I would recommend renting a car and getting there that way, and get a chance to see The Grand Canyon. It is a nice trip and it will not be as hot as it is now. I would book the car with Hertz and they include all the necessary insurance, so the rental company doesn't sting you when you pick the car up. Yeah 14 days minimum to get it all in, including Disneyland. ;) It is doable. ;D

I am all good with that, it is when I show up at a venue like CAX I do not know anyone's face. Odds are I strike up a conversation with someone and its the nob who gives me grief when I'm online, and he is the nicest bloke you can meet. So I play the games, look at what is on offer and then go my merry way. Then I get told I was not there and not to come etc. It is like I am back in junior high and everyone is too cool and are all ---punks---. Now you see why I go stealth. Life is so much better and easier. I will be there next year, incognito, looking at games I now have on my Stargate, but it is always nice to see the old cabinets again. ;)
So was this Kanada the guy with the 720 joystick or the Mario Bed sheets guy with mummy issues in his NY apartment? I cannot remember. So many nobs on here to count. Yot was in game over mode to disclose anything. :lol

Well yeah and it is unfair of me to advertise the place as Anaheim is like driving in Greece (if you have done that), but surprisingly they do a bus trip from MGM to Disneyland. If you have seen EuroDisney then there is nothing that you haven't seen. Girls like to be dragged around Disneyland and do not attend solo so bring a mate. Not a lot to do in NV or AZ but if you can get the flight that stops at JFK...

I have family in Arkansas so I will probably end up there for a while for free lodgings but having never been stateside theres lots for me to see and get excited about :p

The landscape in Arkansas is just amazing, and the people there are the best you can meet. I just might make a trip there before you do TG. Before I was born the UK had one of its most coldest winters, so bad all the birds froze dead on the lawn. With the rationing my Dad said enough is enough and had the option for Canada, Australia but you had to be in a proper trade to get in. My parents worked in film so USA was the best as there was no points system. My family moved all over Canada and California as it was a paradise when they landed there. Now it is harder to enter and settle unless you are white and have a good degree.
It is all very polarizing when you see what is going on with immigration today.

Funny you should say that. As this thread should have been made in here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/board,25.0.html) it seems more suitable as it has a certain purpose. As you have posted in general EE, well I thought this was an informal thread, kind of like getting to know you and some chit chat when we will be attending again. If the thread was formal why not post it in the correct place?

Who is going to pay for the logistical part of Zapcon? Are you going to raise ticket prices? Yot should crowdfund it. It would be better than posting it in an obscure part of this website. ;) Why not get the hobby sponsors to pitch in or donate some gear for a raffle? I am pretty sure it is not cheap getting all those games in and out and renting the place. I am sure Southwest Airlines could help if you give them some advertising space.

Since the start of this thread, there has been glaring examples of this peculiar behavior early on. One would think it was in jest, or a derivative of some chemical imbalance.
I have a few other hobbies that have a social element, that are more welcoming by the individuals hosting. That says a lot about this crowd, but there are notable examples that are the exception, and probably due to them being the mods in here. So incognito I will stay and enjoy the setting without the disappointment of social entanglements. I definitely do not want my day out, to enjoy some arcade nostalgia, to be shaken or stirred. Thanks.

See what I mean? He means well, and I should not steal this thunder when making plans for the next event, like I have that much sway on this board. I do like his father-esque approach throughout this thread as it is rather quaint, and ridiculous at the same time. Like a modern day Don Quixote.
If this whole thread is to plan your activities why not post this in the Meet Up section of the website. You guys have started something related up there already. How about we ask the mods to move this thread up there? I can ask some friends of industry to help you fund next year's Zapcon, if that is not beneath you.

The purpose of this thread is to network with those interested or committed to going and who want to have some fun as a group. It's also meant to inform people who are not familiar with the event but would like to come. Since you are not interested in that, I suggest you find other reading materials.

Don't be silly - we have a great time together. We're there for a love of classic games and a sense of community. Plus, the only rule, and I've said it before the last two times - no beefs. You leave that ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- behind the keyboard. There haven't been any issues. When I saw DeL and Malenko take a selfie together two years ago, I knew we were on to something special. I refuse to let any guest, especially someone who comes from out of state, to feel unwelcome.

I think you should go Howard. Yots and I have been around BYOAC since somewhere around 2009/2010, but you've been around way longer. I'm sure there's plenty of stories to tell in person which the BYOAC ZapCon bros would like to hear. I agree about Steve too, he'd probably be surprised by the warm welcome he'd get. Ehhh, I can make no comment at this stage about my own attendance, not trying to be secretive or anything but I just don't know. Unlike the year I did go, money is very tight right now.

Its funny you should say that, as my physiotherapist said the same thing to me last week. I've lost strength in both hands due to RSI, so I got a bucket filled it with sand and punched into the sand for 15 minutes, and then grabbed sand for 15 minute reps. It works wonders so I recommend it for all of you to go pound sand.

Well yeah and it is unfair of me to advertise the place as Anaheim is like driving in Greece (if you have done that), but surprisingly they do a bus trip from MGM to Disneyland. If you have seen EuroDisney then there is nothing that you haven't seen. Girls like to be dragged around Disneyland and do not attend solo so bring a mate. Not a lot to do in NV or AZ but if you can get the flight that stops at JFK...
Just wanted to say, as someone who has driven in Anaheim (affectionately dubbed Ana-crime) for 4 years, and who is currently on vacation in Greece, the two do not relate when it comes to the driving situation. Greece drivers are batshit crazy. Anaheim drivers are pussycats compared to them.

Used to be a collector in Texas that'd sleep on the couches in the lobby during shows. (no, it wasn't me)
Took some nerve, but why the hell not?
One time at a show I split a room with a guy and it turned out he was a snorer. Like chainsaw loud. After staring at the ceiling for 3 hours, I packed up my ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- at 5am and drove home.
Another time, having no other plans, I literally slept on the floor in the corner in a room a guy was sharing with two other dudes. (no homo, there were two beds and a cot in there)
I was there from approximately 4am to 7am.
At his invitation.
After I left, he went around and told everyone I was a "bad collector" because I didn't offer him half the night's room rate. (never could wrap my head around that one, I personally wouldn't dream of expecting money in a situation like that)
So... yeah.... I prefer to jerk off to Cinemax and drill farts into the bed pillows in solitude.

Is that for real? My wife has been cackling over that for months. Oklahoma wouldn't accept her USVI license when she moved there, so she had to redo all the driving tests. Then they attempted to confiscate her USVI license "because it's illegal to have two valid licenses." Unsuccessfully attempted.
Texas don't care - so long as you don't have a car registered here, and can provide a Texas mailing address, you don't even actually have to live here to have a Texas license. They even tell you to get a duplicate before you move out of state so you can turn in the extra one. Drive down, turn your Okie Dokie card in, and get a Texas one.

1 - Well, ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, that's a very generous offer. That does help the scales.

The pre-Game hijinx start Friday afternoon. Between Friday and Saturday, that should give you enough time to play. You could catch a ride to the airport Sunday and be good. Vigo usually leaves on Sunday like that and hasn’t had any issues.

So I don't start earning vacation days till I get my 90 days, which isn't till like May. However, I'm supposed to get 5 sick days on April 1st (that's when everyone gets them) so I just need to make sure its ok with the bigwigs to take a couple days off prior to my 90 without jeopardizing my jerb.

OK, time to fess up. We’ve been dealing with a major health crisis in my family for almost 6 months now, and to be honest, I just haven’t had time to do anything. If you notice, there hasn’t been a T-shirt thread or anything like that. I’m just not really feeling it. I’m super excited to meet some of you guys for the first time, but I just haven’t been up for everything else that comes with the show.
But to hear that Laythe and NotThatJennifer are coming? She lives for badge collecting. That’s jacked my enthusiasm levels up like 100 fold. Honestly, I’ve been in a funk and I could definitely use some excitement, so this definitely kicks things into gear.

Thanks guys. My dad had a massive stroke on September 15, and we’ve been dealing with the aftermath of that. Sometimes when I’ve been posting, I’m sitting at the hospital just keeping him company.
The camaraderie around here is why I stay and it’s really helped me honestly through some of the tough times the past six months. The local collectors group here in Phoenix’s been good to me too.
Anyway, looking forward to running with all you guys!! Jim, buy your ---smurfing--- ticket, I got your pass and MikeA will let you spoon. You’re set!

That'll kill any chance of "Malenko and PBJ make fun of everyone live at Zapcon" from ever happening. I'm a possible to go, but it'll be me solo if I do. OK, so we're about a week away!
In discussions with locals, friends, and organizers, we've set a loose schedule of events for the weekend.
Friday
Friday, at 5:00 PM, we're going to meet at the Oak Room, which is just north of the venue. I've reserved space for 25 people, as locals as well as our out-of-town guests can get together for food, beer, and song. It's close to the venue so we won't need to caravan over. Plus, the food is really good and the service is as well.

Around 7, some of us are going to caravan over to StarFighters Arcade in Mesa. Many of you have been there, some have not, so we decided to make a quick trip that way. Anyone is welcome.
We plan to return to the Convention Center around 9 PM to then participate in ZapCon Contributor Night. Toxicwes has graciously allowed us to bring BYOAC out-of-town guests in that night. It's normally not open to the public, but he recognizes the great cost and commitment many of you have undertaken to come to the show (some of you multiple times), so they're going to allow you in. You MUST have the BYOAC Token to get in. What is that? More later.
Saturday
Group Photo at 2 PM. Informal dinner at Backyard Taco sometime that night. Ask around for deets.

Oh hell yeah! Richie is the best. More than anything, he is such a good dad.
To piggyback on that, DeL, the thing that was nice about having Richie there was there is no pressure for him to be the host. He got to just kinda hang out and enjoy being with our crew. He didn’t have to be on, so he and Faithie could just enjoy themselves.

I’m going to post my yearly recap/thoughts a little bit later, but honestly, my favorite part of the whole week and was watching Laythe absolutely ---smurfing--- destroy Hard Drivin’. In my heart of hearts, I truly wished Steve could have been there so he could have enjoyed the fun.
It blew me away. I’ve play that game since I was a kid, and I’ve always had a soft spot for it, but I’ve never seen anybody just absolutely shred the driving track perfectly the way he did. At one point, he had all top 10 high scores on the game. And the game won fan favorite at the show, so you know he wasn’t the only one playing it.

Got to play a bunch of cabinets I’ve always wanted to try on original hardware, and a ton of pins as well.
I spent a lot of time participating in the various tourney’s that were on: Cyberball, Random Fighters, Killer Queen, and Street Fighter 3rd Strike. But I did finally manage to put a million on Robotron, but that was after ArcadeFixer threw a 998,999,000 score on it. :-\
So I managed to throw high scores on all the gyruss cabs, including the cocktail, as well as a few other games. Yots said he kept seeing my initials in the high score lists all over Zapcon. That was my primary goal tbh. :D
Would have liked to try out the Hard Driving, but every time I came back to the cab Lathe was on it having another great run, so I left that one alone.
Meeting the byoac guys was delightful! All you guys are awesome, and there were times our discussions felt like a byoac thread post. Jokes and ribbings and talking about games, it was like our online personas carried through to in-person. It was very comfortable.
I’m really looking forward to next year, I’m going to try to go again for sure!
It was an incredible time, and I was really impressed with how big arcades are in AZ. Seems like the best place to be to be into this hobby.
Thanks goes out to yots for being the host with the most, and organizing the get togethers. I had such an amazing time!

There was one regret I had from the weekend. I was going to ask Opt to teach me not to suck at Robotron. I was too busy meeting new people and playing games. I don't get to talk video games in person with people who really know their stuff. This was a real treat.

Yeah, Opt was a beast at Robotron and Gyruss. I was amazed at how easy it seemed to be for him. Super good guy.
I’m glad the weather cooperated as well. It’s 95° today.

I get it. Most modern collectors probably don’t like the theme either, but my great-uncle was a Southern Arizona cowboy who would come up to stay with my grandmother on the weekends, and he would watch Hee-Haw on Saturdays, so I know who Roy Clark is.

I'd laugh about the theme being out of date but pinball companies now are releasing stale stuff like Iron Maiden and AC/DC so it's not like we're keeping current anyway.

AC/DC stale? OMG that's like a 5k hard rockin machine, you may want to check your mailbox for some hate mail, :duckhunt.... While themed/dated machines become seemingly irrelevant with age it is probably safe to say they wont be making any more of those.

Wow, nice one Mike A. I wasn't able to get above Arsonist, and it wasn't for lack of trying.

It was luck. The ball jumped out of the second or third tier and ended up in the 3000 point slot. Because it jumped out early on, I got a good time multiplier. Eventually I could get the ball all the way to the bottom regularly, but I never got a better score. Lesson learned. It is better to be lucky than good. ;D

I did the same thing my first year. Luckily, they printed more ZC3 shirts and sold them at ZC4. I preordered my ZC4 and ZC6 shirts...
