Nice!

Wow! That is different, I like it!
-
I can just see a night in your bar....
"So, you say you were one of the best at "Mortal Combat"
"Yes I was...another shot?"
"Sure"
"I was pretty good myself back in the day, too bad there's no way to prove such a claim"
"Hmmm...perhaps there is"
"Hey, what the!!??"
What a great place to get holed up during long winters! Nice job!

Thats badass.

I would drink there... anytime. Hope the touchscreen frame measurements came out okay, looks pretty good in the picture. Pretty impressive man space I must say.

You're all invited. I owe a lot of you a beer for posting so much helpful info.
Hope the touchscreen frame measurements came out okay
The bezel measurements you gave me were perfect. I did a writeup over in the Audio/Jukebox/MP3 area.

Stealth MAME, nice

I want to buy a new house just so I can duplicate that bar. Great job.

Wow - just when I think all the great ideas have been thought of something like this comes along. Nice job! I really really want a bar like that in the basement... of the house I don't own yet...
-
very cool
-
That is way cool - nice job.

My two favorite things. Drinking and Mame. Very cool :applaud:
Is your support arm/board hinged at the the bottom or just use friction to stay put?
-
That's beautiful Burke.
Couple of questions that are hard to tell from pictures:
1. Are the controllers comfortable to play on? It looks like they may be a smidge low with those barstools, almost knee level.
2. If someone is standing behind the bar, can you see the television?
Again, probably one of the most impressive ideas I've seen on the forums. Really really cool. I'm wondering if designing a way for the controllers to come out on top of the bar would be more comfortable.
-

It's hinged at the bottom. I added magnets to the back of the arm so that it stays in place when you put it up and close the panel.

They are actually pretty comfortable. A friend and I played SmashTV to the end on Friday night and had no problems.
2. If someone is standing behind the bar, can you see the television?
Not really. You need to stand to one side if you are behind the bar. The placement of the TV was a balance between seeing over the top of things and being comfortable on the neck. Overall, I think the placement turned out to be just about right.
Thanks for all the complements. I love this forum, and I'm glad I was finally able to give something back.

What a great idea! Very good execution also.
-
THAT IS FREAKIN' AWESOME!! :applaud:
Such a good idea
-
Very original!
Digging it.
-
That is a nice space and I love the integration of the game with the bar -- beautiful work!
-
Awesome job, always something new around here.
Love the whole area. Going to show this to my Brother, he just bought a house and is looking for ideas. :)
-
I'll go ahead and make the statement we are all thinking.....
Now there is nothing new to produce in our hobby except for modifying a bare-chested woman to produce a set of arcade controls from her mid-section (in similar hidden fashion as the bar mame).
(Stobe hears the distinct sound of Knievel plugging in all his cordless tool batteries, and preparing for battle).
Beautiful job and brilliant concept.
-
man that is a cool Idea!
nice work
that place is so nice you should be as stealth with trash cans as you are with the Mame ;)
-
Just when i was finaly getting to be "ok" with my 10 year old cab i built! DANG YOU! Now this is awsome in so many ways. I want to buy a new house just so I can build this!

Nice work! I don't think I could ever leave that room.
-
Just frickin' cool.
-
:dizzy:
what can i say that hasn't already been said!?!?!?!
SFKJBHDIUHF!!!!!
-
I love it. Great idea. I think on top would be cool too, but not the best idea if someone spills a drink or something. The way you have it, it's pretty impossible to spill all over it when it's folded up. Nice work...and a cool idea all around. :applaud:
-
Won't someone please think of the rainforests?
Its bad enough you used all that wood for the bar, but what about all the paper I'm wasting with the endless wishlist I keep adding to every time I see an idea as awesome as this?
-
This bar is frickin sweet!!
:applaud: :applaud: :applaud:

:notworthy:
Daaaaaammmnnn!

WOW! :applaud:

Cool!

This is such a great idea. I particularly like the built-in jukebox.

Yup, neat idea. Nice!

Burke, you are indeed quite famous, and I was brought to this forum from one of the articles you cite. I just had to register to find out if you posted your plans or a walkthrough?!?! It is the coolest bar/arcade/cardroom I've ever seen, and has become my dream for a one day basement :-) Thanks for sharing in any case and enjoy that sucker!
PS, if we played our weekly poker game there, people would be wanting to get knocked out!
-
MAMEY! MAMEY!!
-
I agree!
-
We talked about this one. It's a really nice bar, and we all agree it's a neat idea, but the consensus was that it really didn't go "far enough". The inside of the control panel should (in at least my opinion) have been more "arcade-ish". I can appreciate that it was supposed to be a bar first, and a game machine second, but maybe a blinky light or two?
Don't take this as any kind of criticism for the project...games and home bars are some of my mostest bestest favorite things in the world, and I'd have no problem tipping back a few at this place!

i think youve blown THAT invite ;D

I really have to agree. I love my bar, but it didn't push the envelope of MAME. It's just a plain vanilla implementation of MAME. I'd take a BARBIE, but it's not in the same class as a MAMEY.
...and you are all still invited over for a game and a beer!
-
As long as you understand that there was NO insult intended towards this (we had a good discussion on it, and I for one will very likely copy your idea for my own home bar).
-
Very cool job on that. The only complaint I have, and its a minor one, is the mismatched wood grain of the bottom of the control panel and the rest of the bar. Was that intentional, or 'just happened that way'.
Either way, that is a kick-ass project!
-
What software are you using on your touchscreen jukebox? Do you like it?

Busted! I have to agree with you. If I had to do it over again, I think I would have used the same birch plywood instead of solid oak on the underside of the control panel so that it matches the rest of the bar.

I'm using eJukebox. http://www.audiosoft.net/ (http://www.audiosoft.net/)
I looked at a whole bunch of free packages, but didn't find any that did what I wanted. eJukebox is a bit expensive (I paid $79 for a lifetime license), but it works really well and everyone is able to use it without any instructions.

Hi Burke,
That is a hell of an Idea, amazing it looks great! I bought a house in the beginning of the summer and now it is time to make the Man Cave! I started doing searches on google for man cave's and your bar came out on one of the sites and I followed the link here. I didn't even think of that and I built a mame cabinet myself about 5 years ago (YOU ARE A GENIUS). In fact I am refinishing cab again because it got pretty banged up in the move my brother and friend dropped it going down a flight of stairs..ouch!
Anyways, I was wondering if it was cool with you if I used your idea in my bar? If so are there any suggestion or helpful hints or don't you may have? I plan on setting up a four player (I already have the keyboard converter for it because I planned on making my cabinet a 4 player never got around to it.) I was also thinking about adding a track ball that way I wouldn't need a mouse in PC mode. What size TV did you use? I have been out of the Mame loop for abit how does the newer TV format work with the old arcade game? because everything is 16:9 today and the old screens are 4:3

Go for it. We keep this hobby moving forward by sharing ideas and improving on them. If I had it to do over, I'd make the bottom of the control panel out of the same sheet of plywood as the front of the bar to make it blend in better. The control panel is 4' wide, which is about right (not too heavy, wide enough for 4 players, and small enough for two joystick games like SmashTV).
I was also thinking about adding a track ball that way I wouldn't need a mouse in PC mode.
Good idea. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse for PC operation. A trackball would be nice for trackball games.

42" TV. I like it. I had a previous cab with a TV using S-video. I like VGA much better (but others have a different opinion).
Keep us posted!
-
Thank you for all the info I appreciate it. I will keep you posted. I am doing all the planning now and plan on starting construction around the end of October when my brother gets some time off to give me a hand.

I've also just completed a bar project. Don't want to hijack this thread (as it was partially responsible for getting me started on my own), so you can check it out here:
