Title: Working on my new Frankenpanel
Post by: pinballwizard79 on March 11, 2011, 11:45:04 am
I know guys its a frankenpanel.

But hey, its got cup holders for my beers, a 4 way, dual 8 ways, Apache high/low spinner, trackball & a flight stick.

Of course I will flushmount the trackball/joy bolts, apply artwork, populate & then wire this thing soon

PS I popped in some red, green & white buttons next to an old red joystick (just for this pic only & yes one was a start button) to signify the Defender layout in case you wondered.

As far as Frankenpanel's go that looks real good.

Are you going to have anything else light up besides the Tron stick?

Thanks

Ya the trackball & 3 buttons beside it will glow in addition to the Blacklight LED's inside the UV reactive Tron stick.

That Tron stick looks nice.  I'm working on something similar.  Did you get the thumb switches from Happ?

Yeah its from Happ. I bought this one here & it came with the two switches already installed (there are 3 sticks to choose from @ the bottom): http://www.happ.com/joysticks/50997000.htm (http://www.happ.com/joysticks/50997000.htm) Then I bought Randy's UV-Tron shell & some blacklight LED's

PBWiz you do such clean, nice work, but I gotta ask, why is the tron stick top mounted when everything else is not? Is it staying that way, or is it a mock-up?

Dude tell me about it.

Flush mounting the flight stick was going to be a huge PITA due to the fact it really just has to be top mounted. Its sorta like a trackball mounting plate but with carriage bolts on top of it going all the way from/through top to bottom where they fasten.

As much as I agree with you regarding how slick it would have looked flush mounted the person who helped me with the CAD/CNC work & I just opted to just let the black plate show vs routering it out deeper (reducing the panels strength) & putting a 1/2 inch of sloppy bondo on it (it would have to be routered out deeper than the trackball area due to the surface mount bolts).

I cant wait to play this thing, a glowing fudging Tron stick & hi/lo spinner OMF!!!!

Sucks about the flightstick top mount, but, regardless, that's a nice looking frankenpanel!

I might just have to go searching for those cupholders in brass.

....

Oh holy hell

Thanks. Now I gotta go buy 2 or 4 of these.

Agreed, it is just a super sweet panel... The more I eff'n look at it the more I eff'n look at it.

I have plenty of free time indeed, off work from 03/09/11 - 05/15/11 & digging every minute of it :applaud:

I really like the panel, it would of been perfect if the Tron stick was flush mounted, anyway still awesome.

Just wondering how you find the Apache spinner?

Any reason you chose the Apache over the Groovy Game Gear Turbo Twist High Low spinner?

Nice job.  The cupholders completely cracked me up.

I built a fairly similar panel last summer (and yes, I'm a no-artwork lame-o):
