It's a new Netflix exclusive film starring Will Smith. It borrows heavily from the old "Alien Nation" film/tv show. Basically it's a modern cop film set in LA with Orcs and Elves and various other LOTR mythos. It's a bit heavy-handed with the whole race-relations morality stuff, but the sentiment is right at least. The story is kind of basic and predictable, but there is some fantastic world-building going on.... so much so that I think they could make a tv show out of it... or at least a few more films. The acting is good as are the sfx. Give it a watch.
-
I enjoyed it.
-
Watch for the MiB 1 homage in the titty bar. Blink and you’ll miss it.
-
I plan on watching... got some sketch reviews but... I'll take y'alls word for it.
-
It is getting ripped by critics but I'm glad to hear you guys liked it. I'll give it a watch. I loved the Alien Nation movie.
-
Well the critics hate the Orville as well, so there you go.
-
I didn't love it... but... meh... pretty decent concept.
-
From the trailers, it's basically "Shadowrun: The Early Years". I'm watching it tonight, I've been anticipating it for a couple months now.
-
Lots of f bombs... Probably wouldn't watch it with my son
-
You lost me at Will Smith.
-
Been meaning to check this out, good to hear a couple people liked it before wasting the time. :)
-
You lost me at Will Smith.
Ah hell naw.
-
I will say that the fresh prince can ruin a movie if he's cast poorly, but this isn't one of those times. Say what you will, but the guy is a phenomenal actor, and if you don't think so I suggest you go watch The Pursuit of Happiness or Ali. Dude's gotz skillz to pay them billz son.
-
I'll probably give this a shot, but my one question is what's with the title? "Bright"? I mean, it doesn't exactly conjure up images of the buddy-cop/fantasy mash-up they've created. Is it explained in the movie?
-
Yeah. Anyone who has magical powers is called a bright.
-
Yeah. Anyone who has magical powers is called a bright.
Ugh, that's the best they could come up with? :-\
-
They're taking Bright away from the obnoxious atheists and making it great again.
-
Kidding aside, I don't think religion is a thing in that universe. When magic and stuff are real, any belief is no longer blind faith and therefore can't be religion. The thing about religion is there is zero proof for any of it, which is why it's silly to get mad at atheists when their lack of faith makes more logical sense.
Merry Christmas. :D
-
Please tell me he says “I gotta get me one of these!!” It ain’t a Will Smith film otherwise.
-
I liked it.
I don't understand all the hate from the critics.
there is already sequel ordered.
wish there were no boobs and better language so I could watch with my kid.
-
I started Dark last night. I know its sort of a rip on Stranger things but two episodes in and I'm liking it so far.
As far as bright.... I think it would have benefited from more production money. World building would have been better with more fantasy creatures incorporated into the setting.
-
Last half hour really drug on....
-
The whole thing did. Against my better judgement I watched this while maintaining a lovely Swedish Gloog buzz, which isn’t that difficult given that drink is made of 3 types of alcohol. But it’s a fine winter drink, graciously made from my friend’s grandma’s recipe.
What a piece of garbage movie. After being hit over the head repeatedly with the racial/xenophobic topic, they follow it up by a simple formula of action—>lull to explain absolutely nothing —>action —>lull—>repeat. Half way though the movie my wife and others in the room were questioning where this movie was going?
A lot of this movie could have been edited out, scenes made shorter, casting choices different.
So much cringe in this film. The chollos were laughable, the “fbi guys” were confusing and the whole setup of the story had a shallow explaination of how things got this way.
Will Smith was typical big Willie style, trying to come off all hard but failing to deliver any genuine character reactions. I mean, his character is basically Dead Shot or Hancock. Same character beats, same inner struggle.
I wasn’t expecting much from the Scientologist, but I keep reminding myself that he hasn’t done a good acting performance in a long while anyway, so this is par for the course.
Thumbs down on this movie.
-
Not watched it, may do at a later date.
Am I right in thinking its a similar thing to Space Precinct?
But with more bad language and boobs? Lol
-
Jeez, titch, if only it didn’t cost you anything extra to watch and if only it could be played on any modern device. Oh well, some day.

Half way through S3 atm.
Yeah its pretty good!
-
Watched it, wasn't great but wasn't terrible. a 7 /10 ish?
Fell into a lot of obvious tropes, the orcs all looked like burn victims. Nick got less likable as the movie went on. Excessive gore could have been toned down and pointless nudity could have been completely cut out. Everything I thought was going to happen, happened ; but at least the characters were consistent. A lot of the back story is fed to you in throw away lines of dialog and I wish they gave you more insight into the world. I had issues with the elf abilities and how much they changed when fighting throw away characters vs fighting plot-centric characters.
At least it was 2 hours and 45 minutes of slow mo space craft.

Might be the best show ever.

Best show ever?
You obviously never watched "Sledge Hammer!"
-
Yeah dunno about best ever but its pretty good lol
I mean its got tough competition...
Sopranos, Breaking bad, board walk empire, peaky blinders etc
-
There was television before the year 2000.
-
There was television before the year 2000.
Yeah, but no where near the amount of quality TV series IMO.
I think most older TV series were either never ending, Utter pants or anything that seemed to show any sort of promise was canned for no apparent reason.
Theres a few exceptions I can think of but not many.
And I cant really think of any decent crime ones Pre 2000.
Least none that made it to this side of the pond lol
-
I think the newer TV shows benefit from having a shorter season. 10-13 episodes forces the writers to work tighter and you end up with less filler than what we got on the old 20-24 episode network schedule.
-

Searched for "best shows of the 1980s" and Google returned a list of mostly sitcoms, with a smattering of action shows and some dramas.
Searched for "best shows of the 2010s" and it's pretty much all dramas.
-
The Waltons, MASH and Star Trek TNG, and those are just off the top of my head. Every hour long drama on tv owes a dept to those three shows btw.... they developed the format and all the tropes that come with it. Modern shows are certainly filmed at a higher quality and sometimes the acting is better, but the concept of the shows can often be rather poor. I love modern tv, but it isn't any better than older shows, it's gotten slicker, not better.
As for crime shows, Dragnet comes to mind... which again, along with Law and Order set the format that every single solitary procedural crime drama uses now.

TNG? Nah. TNG was far too "adventure of the week". DS9 was miles ahead of it in terms of both storytelling and character development.
-
Mission: Impossible.
Now THAT was a show.

I'm not gonna help kick off a which trek was better argument, but let me just say: "Babylon 5".
-
Yes and both Babylon 5 and Ds9 wouldn't have existed without TNG. TNG started the whole weekly plot with underlying character development and ongoing subplots, which is the formula most dramas use these days. The only thing that doesn't are serialized dramas, but they still use a similar format.

Best show ever?
You obviously never watched "Sledge Hammer!"
"No, it's not a silencer. This little doodad is my own invention. I call it a loudener."
I liked Farscape.
I thought first season was pretty darn good and the show seemed to know how to have fun.
but they dragged the split Crichton thing too long and i lost interest.
may pick it up again if it's still on netflix.

I spent my holiday week watching reruns of Happy Days. My favorite episode is the one where the Fonz uses waterskiis and a ramp to fly over a captured Selachimorpha.
-
Well judging by what suggestions you guys have made maybe theres not that much difference between our old TV!
But you have basically proved my point about the limited TV pre 2000.
It was mostly sci fi, sit coms or comedy.
Sci fi was a niche market but you had Trek and Dr Who.
Sitcoms were mostly junk with a few exceptions.
Comedies yeah there was a few only fools and horses was shear gold.
Only other good series I can think of is Sharpe.
Thats pretty much my lot!!
-
Three Stooges
F Troop
Twilight Zone

found sledge hammer! on youtube.
it still hold up for my immature knuckle dragging sense of humor.
-
Yes it does.
-
Nothing they create today will ever be better than the old shows.
(there's too many to list here) Also TNG was the best Star Trek.
-
I disagree. There are excellent shows being produced today. I just don't think shows from the past should be dismissed so easily.
-
The new Black Mirror season is pretty good....

Need to look these up!
Loved the old seasons!
-
Your favorite _______________ sucks. It’s kinda what we do here.
-
I wasn’t crazy about season 3, but enjoyed season 4.
-
Just watched Bright today. It was Ok. They could have left the bird seed stealing fairies out of it.
I have watched a few of the Black Mirror episodes. Most are pretty good. The metal head (I think that was the name, with the robot dogs) one was real good I thought, but didnt like the way it ended.
-
I don't like Black Mirror. While interesting content it's too raw for my palette. I have no stomach for cruelty. The very first one turned me off completely - I've checked out a few others but nothing I saw made me want to get me back into it.
-
It reveals many disturbing things about British people. And far too many episodes have a twist along the lines of, “surprise! You’re a digital clone!” But I still like it.

Let me correct you there:
It reveals many disturbing things about human kind.
And yeah it does....
-
Eh, yeah. No. Those hang ups are uniquely your own.

Considering where you are from I would seriously disagree with that LOL

Watched Bright and I dug it, sequel is on it's way: https://www.engadget.com/2018/01/03/netflix-bright-sequel/ (https://www.engadget.com/2018/01/03/netflix-bright-sequel/)
I like Black Mirror as well, the first episode of season 1 was rough but they got progressively better each season. The last part of season 3 and all of season 4 were great.
If you want to be disturbed watch the Voyeur documentary on Netflix now, pretty twisted. ;D

Bad news, diagnosed with Bronchitis right after Christmas.
good news, they caught the pneumonia early.
I watched the magicians on Netflix, all the free episodes of Dr. Who on firestick then entered the very bowels of PRIME.
Defiance.
2 seasons of Andromeda.
3 of the Mystica movies ( which I never knew even existed).
Cord and Tish new yrs day.
Watching Andromeda now still.
No regrets.
