I am trying to come up with a plan for a new upright cabinet.
I want/need to keep it kind of traditional looking with the Control Panel inside the cabinet but not as deep.
I really like the MsPac/Galaga/Galaxian style so this is a test cabinet.

I will bend up the CP from metal and it will follow the angle of the cabinet protrusion, then go back on a slight angle.
I know its hardly a new design and hard to tell unfinished, but am I on the right track?
Opinions please.

I'm glad to see it actually looks good as a real cab.

I'd personally make the CP area look a bit more Galaga like (not like in my drawing BTW, but like the real Galaga cab) and I'd make the top more curved.

Looks good.
I typically like my cabs like I like my women... 23 years old, fat, with cigarette burns and smelling like a bar, but that is a decent compromise between a slim cab, and an old school shape.

Yes! Do this. I like your design, but I like Patricks more I think. More recognizable.

This looks great! You've captured what I've been struggling to do on paper - retain the classic lines within a chopped or shallow frame. When I sketched out chopped Galaga cabs, I thought they looked a bit goofy with the rounded curve on top and a 15-degree monitor slope. To me, the charm of the original cabs were the lines created by the top curve on a deep cab and the almost-horizontal positioning of the monitor. Anyway, the deciding factor for me was seeing my three designs side-by-side. From left to right, Defender, Galaga-Based, and Galaga

The outline for that design was taken from the file that was floating around of a complete Pacman side. You printed out 20 something A4 pages and taped them all together. I traced it off that and rounded the curve by the CP. Maybe too much but thats easily rectified.

Cheers. Because you have your CPs like that it is throwing off your designs. Mine will be an internal panel but it sill still be large enough for a 2 player, 12 button layout.
Its 630mm wide and 1800mm high which I think is 6ft?

Agree RE CP overhang. I'm in the process of trying to squeeze everything into a 24" CP and adjust the cab width to accommodate. But I'll still have the front hang which will alter most original lines. Not as much as side-hang, but enough to be noticeable.

I didn't get a chance to do any work on the cab.
I am building a Mortal Kombat for someone. Man they are BIG ass cabinet.
I think I will leave the top because it will follow the angle of the monitor, but sharpen up the point and just under it. Maybe --tomorrow is too many letters to type so instead I'll just say the day after today--.

Have you thought about rethinking the frankenpanel design itself? What about two or three swappable panels? Install a false front to store the other two panels and BAM! your fupa problem goes away.

Well I'm prejudiced I guess. Somehow I'm in love with the shape of a Galaga cab.

OK, I know I'm a freak :P I changed the lines of this to adjust for the errors in the Jakobud plans.
Actually I scaled my Galaga cab design (so the top slopes just as much, but over a shorter depth) instead of "cutting off" the back. I guess cutting it off would work too, but it might alter the "exponentially curved" look.
Anyway, can't wait to see how yours turns out. You always make the slickest cabs.

Ha, me and hurrying :P I hope in half a year to be in my new house and to have a garage again so I can actually work on my own cab.

I have seen a few Galaga repros built up on this site but have never found any decent plans. Someone really needs to submit plans to Jakobud. I mean this has me cost time and money.
He has a great site but if something is wrong and someone out there can submit plans to his site, then they should do it or at least send him the changes that need to be made.
This won't just help me, it helps us all.
If someone has the right angles/measurements and can help me out, please PM me or just give me a link to some detailed drawings it would be much appreciated.
I guess being at the bottom of the world and walking upside down all day doesn't help either. :laugh2:

I didn't think of that!
I've been thinking of ideas for a wall mount. Cut out every inch of depth, then screw it to the wall with 4 large wood screws. You could probably get it down to around 12" deep. Unfortunately my gameroom walls are solid concrete, so I won't be building one anytime soon.

That looks pretty cool. It doesn't look all extremely skinny actually. I like the lines going around the side and front. The kickplate might need something extra to break it up a bit (coin door maybe).
