Title: Guide to building an Xbox powered arcade cabinet from scratch
Post by: degenatrons on April 10, 2012, 04:19:36 pm
Hi,

I started a new arcade cabinet project and have been documenting the build on YouTube and CoinOps4 project forums.  This will be a bartop arcade cabinet that is powered by an original xbox and running coinops4 as the frontend.

It was suggested that i also post updates of the build on this site.  I hope this is the right place to put this but just let me know if it would be better suited to another section.

So this is an arcade build with Xbox. To save room in the small cab i also disassemble to Xbox and remove key parts.  This is kind of the focus for the first couple of videos but we move on to general arcade constuction from part 3.

I have also designed my own marquee and control panel for this cab with "CoinOps4 vs Street Fighter" theme.

Anyway,  please check out the videos and I welcome your feedback.

Part1: http://youtu.be/tJAPuNY49SQ (http://youtu.be/tJAPuNY49SQ)

Part2: http://youtu.be/ozcKbBaPvcE (http://youtu.be/ozcKbBaPvcE)

Part3: http://youtu.be/bFvsOmRfn9Y (http://youtu.be/bFvsOmRfn9Y)

Part4: http://youtu.be/h8QIjfSazK8 (http://youtu.be/h8QIjfSazK8)
...and more to come

I know your stuff from the coinOps forum, I really like it.  I've never considered building such a mini cab so I've never dealt with space issues.  Does heat get to be an issue with the case off and space so tight?  I know that earlier xboxes has a fan on the GPU which I guess would help.

Do you have an outline for what else you plan to cover in the videos?  I started figuring out CRT TVs for full size cabs which isn't applicable to what you are doing.  The research I have done on joystick encoders might be something I can help with.

Maybe we can coordinate on CoinOps settings for a cab as well.  I'd likely want to do that on the other site since it is so specific to that software.

Hey sharpfork,  thanks for your reply.

I think the airflow is better inside the cab than in the xbox.  There is actually more space for air.  I can also mount bigger fans easily to the rear.  Typically,  I like to invert the fan to pull air in,  this regulates temperature nicely inside the cab.

I am a little bit adhoc.  I suppose I should really have a plan for the build so you know what sections I will be covering.

I appreciate any help you can provide on joystick encoders. For this build,  I was planning to hack an s-controller for the interface to xbox.  I also took a look at I-Pac with Xbox adapter but this seems a lot more expensive for little benefit.  One interface I am keen to progress is my own encoder interface for Xbox/Coinops.  I am a programmer and have done some work on USB devices previously.  I would like to develop a USB type interface using Arduino (or similar microcontroller) to directly take inputs from arcade controls and convert to Xbox signal (like ipac).  I don't expect this to be very difficult,  my problem is that there is absolutely no documentation about xbox control signals.  The microcontrollers are really really cheap so if i can get this working it will be very accessible for cab builders and very simple to connect.

For the coinops stuff we can pick that up on the other site.  Grateful for any help you and the community can provide.  I have not been using coinops for long.

Cheers.

yes, it is good option but i do ruin a few s-controllers with my soldering and have some dents in my walls :)
I am going to try using a little conductive glue on the pads to hold wire and then lots of hot glue to secure in place so this will be solder-free solution.

Hey,  thanks for pointing me at this site.  Bartops are only option if you are limited for space so they are quite appealing to some.
At some point I will look to build a cocktail or upright cab.

Glad to hear that you are watching the videos and give me a shout if you need any help with your build.  Look forward to hearing how you get on.

Thanks for the link.  I need to order some of them and this is a cheap price.  I just disassembled an MS trackball mouse and it has a pretty large trackball inside.

@degenatrons Once you get some pics up, I think you might get some more love if this is moved to the project section  :)

@HaRuMaN how much do these cost? an what do they actually do, sorry im a noob getting into building a cab from scratch  ???

@pinballjim I bought a cab with a stripped out 2 player X-Arcade in it. Works great with the xbox in coinops! no lag an love the feature to change from D-Pad to stick buy pressing two buttons.

Controller hack for original Xbox is $35, plus the cost of the controller (or you send me one).  It allows you to hook up arcade-style joysticks & buttons to your Xbox.

You get: the D-Pad, both triggers, X,B,A,Y, start, back, black, white, and I can also do the "click" buttons (pushing in the analog sticks).

Or grab a used X-arcade like I did and steal the guts from that.

Yes you know where to get it PBJ.  ::)

Just get the package without the roms from the BP's site and use .84.  Odds are you have all the sets already.

If .84 doesn't work for you try .57-70.

I offer hacked Xbox controllers if your solution doesn't work out.

What is the going price for a xbox1 controller hack, as I am a poor starving student?   ;)

It was a joke.  Maybe you and Howard can go to the autism doctor together?

So was mine,  Coinops 4 doesn't work well with .84 and I figured you didn't have the sets anyway.

Never stick me in the Howard Casto camp.  I'm not a Nintendoh fanboi.  That will not do. :P

@HaRuMaN - Sounds good I might need 3 later down the track  ;D

@pinballjim - how do you play Gauntlet Dark Legacy with your tankstick? I find I need to hit the two buttons to change from D-pad to stick it drives me  :censored: crazy.
An I waste magic when doing it  ???

It's been four years since I softmodded my old xbox. I've since collected a few more xbox's with the intention of modding them.

Is there an updated instruction set for softmodding? I use the hotswap method since I don't have any of the games.
I probably would want coinops to be the dash...is that possible?

I'd like to try but I'm sure the process has been tweaked a bit since I've last done it. (plus it was a while ago)

Any reccomendations?

I think at this point in time There is a dash called Dragon which BP who released Coinops Is working on.

I use XBMC, But looking for a way to boot straight into coinops would be great
Title: Re: Guide to building an Xbox powered arcade cabinet from scratch

I love XBMC...there was a time when I used the old softmoded xbox daily. I actually used the unleash dash but I always wished I had just used XBMC (I was too lazy to change it)

Now that we are in the age of streaming...there are only a few shows I watch that are stored locally. I find that the Xbox 360 and PS3 work well enough for that.

So now all my old Xboxes are sitting in a box and a dedicated Retro gaming solution would be welcome.

(I lied, I still play burnout 3 on the old xbox on occasion.) :)

LOL Haruman's too poor for a flatscreen and PS3!!

 :lol

Heh.  This is upstairs in the gameroom... the PS3, Wii, & 360 are downstairs hooked to the flatscreen.

This pic reminds me, though... you had some sort of solution for multiple consoles, one TV.  I forget where that thread went...  If I remember right, you couldn't hook the Xbox up that way, something about audio grounds.

What was that solution, again?

I have another SNES with a bad video RAM, but the case is perfect.  My SNES in the picture, besides being yellow, is cracked.  I'm just going to swap the guts.

If you understand Spanish, this guy has a Xbox1 (http://zonaarcade.forumcommunity.net/?t=49510900) build.

Looks a bit of a mish-mash but I guess he is happy with it.  ;D

You can get component cable splitters really cheap and you just ignore the fact that the plugs are the wrong color and use them as composite splitters.  I seem to recall some mouth breather on here argued with me that it doesn't work.  I guess copper wire works differently in his world.

That would be me. And I explained to you that I wasn't getting how it worked because I was somehow looking at it backwards or sideways (i.e. I was thinking two plugs - like the NES - instead of the three, like SNES). Everyone's entitled to a moment of empty-headedness - but the fact that you still rather be insulting than enlightening is why some people question you instead of take you seriously.  You can't spend half your time being a troll and then cry about how someone dared to question your advice a year ago.  ::)

That being said, I was going to try PBJ's method but I had a couple of consoles with S-Video hook ups I spent money on years ago.  So I stuck with the switch boxes (got two hooked up) with the main one going to the S-Video input of the TV. The S-Video hook-ups go through that switch box while the regular composite hook-ups go through the second box fed into the first with an S-Video to RCA composite adapter.  The advantage is cleaner picture and less bulk in the back of the TV; downside would mean you have to label the buttons (unless you don't mind blindly poking) - and the extra wiring/adapters.

And back on topic:  Thanks for those videos degenatrons. I never thought about using an Xbox for a cab when I first putzed around with MAME on that console (about 7 or 8 years ago), but now I'm starting to consider it more. Looking forward to more.

Thanks for the feedback DaveMMR.  Part 4 is out at http://youtu.be/h8QIjfSazK8 (http://youtu.be/h8QIjfSazK8)

I'm sure many would be surprised at what that console is capable of 10 years on.  The arcade frontend (coinops) is still being actively developed and has a great community and a new release.
