Title: Rowe R85 Help
Post by: Jfnchr91 on May 16, 2018, 12:35:09 pm
I acquired a Rowe R85 Starburst (Starlight?) when I bought my current house. There is no locking mechanism on the front, but it won’t open. Is there a way to get it open? I’ve tried everything short of breaking the front door. It doesn’t power on, I’m not sure if the power supply has been removed or if the cable has fallen into the machine itself, that’s why I would like to get it open to check. I’m just wanting to sell it and know nothing about it, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello jfnchr91,

There were 3 cabinet trim versions of the 1981 Rowe Ami R-85, these were the plain Starwood, Starburst and Starlight (this had the infinity lights and mirror ball on the bottom panel.

To open a Rowe Ami jukebox where the door lock is missing or damaged, you need a couple of flat blade screwdrivers that you put some tape around the ends of blade to protect the cabinet.
Put one screwdrive into the gap between the door and the bottom locking plate about 8 inches  (approx 200 mm) from one side of the cabinet, lift the door slightly so you can see through the gap the locking mechanism, this looks like an arrow head, with another screwdriver between the arrowhead and the metal plate it engages with, force them apart, you will notice when lock disengages on that side of the cabinet.
Put a wedge in the larger gap now so the lock that side can not re-engage. Do the same on the other side.

Now is the time to fit a new lock and sort out the issues with the jukebox.

Alan
