Title: Looking for rotating monitor info...
Post by: cobalt_boxx on September 06, 2016, 11:03:38 am
Hi all, Old time BYOAC member ( under a different user name "Xtrememame" I believe) from when everyone was still hacking keyboards for controls...Ive got the bug to build a new slick cabinet but I've been out a long time and have some questions that I haven't found the answer for regarding monitor rotation.

1st is I am currently running Windows 10 x64 & MameUIFX64. Will I be able to use this setup for an automated rotating monitor? Or will I need to switch to running a command line version of mame with a front end like Mala or Hyperspin using MRotate? How much "programming" is actually involved in making this work? Just want to get some kind of Idea on if this is feasible before I start shelling out money on a turntable, servo controller, servo, etc,  I'm basically a computer dummy

Why not build a cabinet big enough to accommodate a vertically-mounted 42in TV and eliminate the need for mechanical rotation?

Its more about the project for me than the end result I guess...I want a somewhat standard looking cabinet, but want a rotating monitor so both ways are full screen. I do like your setup though, but Ive already got the monitor.

Pretty much have to run a front-end that supports monitor rotation.  Mala, Hyperspin, or GameEX.
Mala has issues with the newest versions of MAME.
Hyperspin is a PITA if you're a computer dummy as you say.

I haven't used GameEX, but if you're going to learn something new that's what I'd recommend.
It's actively developed and has a good support community.

Here is a link to Headkaze's rotation plugin: http://headsoft.com.au/index.php?category=gameex (http://headsoft.com.au/index.php?category=gameex)

There have also been plenty of people who did a rotating monitor with the rotation triggered by buttons or a switch rather than having the front end control it.

Cool! Thanks for the info. Ive played around w/ hyperspin and can get it going, Just have to play w/ it a bit. I thought about a switch also, May take that route if I cant figure out the other. MameUIFX has a folder for plug-ins, Ive just never needed to mess w/ it. Thanks for answering
