Title: Post links to your rotating projects here.
Post by: DaOld Man on January 28, 2011, 06:27:32 am
Use this section to post links to your rotating monitor project.
I have created another topic for discussion and Q&A about MRotate.
I would like to leave this topic to only showcase rotating projects.
Thanks and sorry about the confusion.

If you have a rotating monitor project on here, (I know there are a bunch), how about posting a link to it here.

This is the first one I did, and I learned a lot from this. This post is pretty long, as I tried to post all my trials and errors, (looking back, that probably wasnt a good idea.)
So bear with me if you decide to read it. Hopefully it will save you a few trials and errors.

After lots of time planning out the design of my rotating 21" crt cab, I've literally just started construction, and the monitor rotator is the first bit I'm working on.

Thread is here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=107919 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=107919)
Updates will be soon. Honest.

Nothing much to help on the software side of things, but hopefully lots of inspiration for the mechanical/electrical aspect (",)

My very first rotating monitor program, (I guess that could be labeled as a project) called DRotate, for DOS machines.
Ahh, the memories LOL.

Here is my rotate Project. It was "very" easy for me, because the original CAB have 4 PCBs inside and was able to turn the screen. My Job was only to rip all out of the cabinet make it more beautyfull and do the connection from the PC to the turning pcb of the cabinet. The build in turning PCB is capable to turn the screen via one signal.
on = turn to vertical
off = turn to horizontal
It has two relais on board and some edge switches at the start and end of the turning points.
and handles the degauss with two ptcs

How could I have missed this, that looks amazing, I like the way it interacts with the game, excellent work. It's funny how I noticed this on the same day I'm struggling with my Toppers rotation.

Here's a quick video of my rotating monitor setup.  It's driven by a servo similar to the setup used by GORF here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,139722.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,139722.0.html).  I don't actually have any of my cabinet designed or built yet.  Needed a way to mount the monitor for testing, and managed to integrate the rotating monitor into the original monitor mount.

Not counting the cost of the monitor (which I've had laying around for years), I spent less than $80 on all the parts for this.  Once I've pulled together more information, I plan to post a dedicated thread with some pictures, diagrams, and additional details on the parts used, but for now I thought I'd go ahead and post a link to my video on YouTube.

Hello Byancey, and welcome to the forum!
Looks like you are off to a great start on your rotating project.
I have got to get me one of those sevos to play around with.

I've enjoyed looking at all of your guys' rotating displays. I wanted to toss mine onto the pile in case anyone is interested.

Hello mrsonicblue, and welcome to the forum!
Nice job on your rotating project.
I like the way you used the right angle gearing.
What drive and  software are you using?

Thanks, DaOld Man. I used the miter gears to keep the mechanism as thin as possible. I didn't have a lot of space in the cabinet. Unfortunately in terms of cost, it's one of the more parts. The software (both the menu for picking games and the procedure to run the motor) was written by myself. It's modeled on the original iPod interface - with simple lists that let you filter by different attributes. You can view games by system (or games across all systems), then alphabetically, by developer/publisher, by year, most recently played, favorites, random, or keyword search. I use MAME's rom metadata to decide if a game is vertical (or not) and run a simple routine to run the motor toward a specific angle until it's within a half-degree of the target. By "drive" do you mean the motor controller? If so, it's a Phidgets brand controller. I like it because it connects directly with USB and programming APIs for many, many languages are available.

Just adding a link to the project thread with details on the final results of my rotating Bartop project.

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,143092.msg1483827.html#msg1483827 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,143092.msg1483827.html#msg1483827)

The final result ended up deviating a bit from the information I originally posted up in reply #16 of this thread.

Now James, give credit where credit is due, you know you can do it.
Im just afraid how your build will put my build to shame!
Hvent seen you around for a while, glad to see you back, and hope to see your take on this type project soon.
