Made lots of progress on my control panel build this evening, my overlay image came back from the printers and I could finally start putting everything back together. Not complete but i'm pleased with the results

Still got to add the t-molding, spinner, and connect all the wires up, but should hopefully have that done in the next few days. Should also have my website complete in the next week which shows my build.

looks great... what did you end up printing on, vinyl? Was it self adhesive or ??
What did you use to have it stick to your cp? Is there lexan over that?

What can I say - WOW, one of the best stand alone panels that I've seen.
Also I notice you're in the UK, so I'll be reading your site with special interest.
Please can you answer a few questions:
I notice that no carriage bolts are showing. Presumably you countersunk the joystick mounting bolts. I am considering doing that but I'm concerned that it won't be strong enough because you're effectively making the wood thinner at the countersinking points. What has your experience been, and what size/type bolts did you use? Also will you use carriage bolts to hold down the sides of the plexiglass or will it just be held it place with the buttons?
What type of transparent sheeting did you use (lexan, plexiglass etc), how thick was it, and where did you buy it?
Where did you get the artwork printed and how much did it cost? Also what program did you use to design it? I visited a couple of local print shops yesterday and was quite shocked at how expensive it is to print anything bigger than A3. I was quoted about

Thanks for the comments, and yeah yeah i know I based my image design on motofishes, but it was what I was kinda aiming for in the first place and i think i've changed it enough to make it my own.
Rampy, the image was printed to gloss paper, its sandwiched between the mdf top and 2mm plexi-glass using just the buttons to clamp the whole lot together.
Small update, I've now added the spinner and wired everything back up, plugged it in to my PC and everything worked first time. Only job left is to add the t-molding.

I'm not really familiar with mounting a trackball with anything other than a mounting plate.
I'm assuming that's a happs trackball, how did you mount it?

Yeah, I'd also like to know how you got the trackball on there, along with all the other stuff, like the joysticks and the spinner without one visible screw! my guess would be you covered the screws with the CP overlay, but whatever you did it looks damn nice!

Joysticks were mounted using screws from underneath, the trackball is still in the mounting plate, i just recessed it into the panel by about 2mm, then covered the lot with plexi.

Sorry Grasshopper i missed your post, to answer your questions.
As mentioned i used wood screws to hold the joysticks in place, i try this on my test panel and they were plenty strong enough.

you don't need a mounting plate to mount a trackball. At least I didn't use one for my 3" imperial. I used 1/2" birch ply for the CP top. Cut a football shaped hole the same dimensions as the TB. The TB housing comes apart. I screwed thru the TB housing into the sides of the football hole. Screwed the housing back together. Routed a nice hole in the 1/4" lexan. Rounded over the lip - viola no carrige bolts or screws showing.

I found the image on a public web gallery a while back, I just dropped a mail to the creator to ask permission to use it, stating that it was to be used for a personal no profit project.
I've now finished it all, added the t-molding and wired up lighting for the trackball. Just need a bigger house so I can build the rest of the cabinet ;D

VERY nice looking CP. I might have to pinch a couple of ideas off it. ;)
