X-Men

----------------------------------------------------

ROMSet: xmen

----------------------------------------------------

Default Settings:
Lives : 2
Difficulty : 4/Medium
Maximum Mutant Power: 9

----------------------------------------------------

I used to play this game a lot when I was younger, not in any competitive nature though.  The other reason I pick this is because I'm interested to see what (if any) strategies people use when getting high scores in beat-em-ups.  They just look straightforward to me but I understand there's gotta be guys who are much better at this than others so I wanna see what sets them apart.

ALSO, I don't think hiscore saves high scores on this game so make sure you take a screen shot BEFORE you exit if you're used to that feature!

----------------------------------------------------

- One credit only!

- No continues or adding credits!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Tuesday September 6 (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2011.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).

- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.

- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard. (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=113948.0)

Best of luck!-

I'll start off by posting my 1st run score to get this rolling.

I wouldn't recommend waiting until your character's high score screen rolls around as it could take awhile.  It looks like your high score should always be visible at the top during any character's attraction mode video.

One credit on a game like this……

This will be interesting.

If they have xxx number of orbs and certain health I don't think you take damage?  Curse work and the two all-nighters so far this week........making me not be able to think or compete.   :badmood:

1 credit? I love this game to death but man. Considering using the mutant power eats a ball AND a significant amount of health, Ill be surprised if someone gets past the blob.

This is just how we separate the boys from the men.  ;)
I've played around and I understand the game and the mutant power more.  1: You have to have a power ball OR drain 3 health bars in order to use it.  2: It drains three health bars ONLY if you have 4 or more health bars.  Meaning using the power will never kill you.  If you have a powerball and 4+ health, it'll take the health instead of the ball.  3:  You get full life and another power ball after you defeat a boss.

Knowing all that, here's some tips I've worked up.
Know the level - Play it enough so you know when to expect robots to pop on screen and fire rocket arms so you can ambush them instead.  Understand enemy patterns to know how to zone them and keep them off your back as you're attacking others.
Save your mutant powers for low health - Since it doesn't take off any health if you have 3 or less bars, try not to use them until then.  This requires practicing how to handle those tougher encounters at some parts of the stages so you don't have to rely on them.

I will get past the Blob, it'll happen.  During my lunch break I was able to get up to 90 before losing my first life, then I tanked hard after that cause I didn't know what lay ahead.  A bit more practice this evening and I'll hopefully break the Blob barrier tonight or tomorrow.

Am I correct in assuming that only 1 player games will be accepted? I usually only play this game with a group of friends.

People can correct me if I'm wrong, but we've played plenty of games that don't reset scores on continue.  It's all on honor system.  However, I never used inp before so I tried it out but something's up where it does stuff I didn't do and the character dies off quickly cause it runs into the enemy and gets hit.  I have streaming software on my main comp, I'll see about putting that on my arcade cab machine too so I can put vids if requested.

Definitely just 1 player for this competition.  2player wouldn't translate at all.

Alright, now for the good stuff.  I was able to get past the Blob pretty easily after I found a pretty easy way to beat him.  I start by knocking him down with my mutant power then hit him ONLY 5 times while he's sitting down (you DON'T want to knock him on his back).  If you do it right, he'll get back up and you only have to hit him twice to get him down again.  Rinse and repeat.  If you knock him on his back while he's down, when he gets back up it'll be much more difficult to get him down again.

I made it pretty far into stage 3.  Nothing in it so far looks too difficult to get past with some practice, but I'm quitting here tonight.

Blob and 93 here.  We need a non-nightcrawler subcategory  :-[

Why?  Is Nightcrawler considered the best?  I feel like I'm doing the best with Storm.

I got to the stage 3 boss today and upped my score to 182 (see attached pic).

I also just got the streaming software setup on my MAME cab and recorded a quick run on X-Men.  It's a bit of a sloppy game but it shows me beating the Blob.  This isn't the run I got 182 on, I did that before setting up the stream.  Ideally y'all want to get to the Blob on your first life with at least 4 health left.  This'll let you use your mutant power and finish him off methodically as mentioned above, without losing a life or any of your power balls.

EDIT:  A better run of 252 was added.

great game, may be the first one I attempt to put my 'skills' to the test.. This game is actually pretty easy to beat, many tips above are correct.

use the screen edge, know where attackers come from. The Jump attack.. this one is HUGE.. many enemies will one shot die to this.. the robots atttached to the floor, easy kills with jump attack, the guys attched to tank treads.. the BEE boss..

When sombody is down, dont let um up, you have a PERMENANT kill when down attack, stand over um and kill um for good instead of letting um get back up.. keep in mind whoever is around you may not agree.. use when space and attackers permit.

Blob, White Queen, Fire guy (first boss) windego.. all are so simple to beat.. use a slide up and down attack style..  White queedn and Windego both are on sorta angled areas.. and if you get os they have to move down the screen to attack you, you alwasy get first hit.. both can be beat with no damage whatsoever.. Blob can be a bit tricky.. but he works alot the same.. dont have him move forward, move up and down so he has to come down to attack.. he wil sometimes get an attack throuhg even though.. and dont foregt to hit hwim when he is down.. free atttack. The fire guy works the same, but use a jump attack to knock him down.. and then the up down slide..

really the only bosses that are "hard" are megneto of course.. and the damn king tut trio guys. The King tut Trio... sorry that is just a clusterBOMB .. jump attack like a madman.. watch the blades cut you to ribbons.. and Magneto.. pure BS.. i would supsec there is some youtube of sombody beating it on a quarter..

personally Storm is the charcter i use, it just seems that cane has some extra reach, I know its imagined, but believing is half ht ebattle  :)

113.  With Storm.

I can get to The Blob no problem, but I can't make much of a dent in him...  :\

I like Storm & Nightcrawler.

Storm surely does seem to have a longer reach and/or is a faster attacker than the other characters.
Nightcrawler has many advantages: he grapples & throws much more often than the others (quicker kill & sometimes hits other enemies w/ the thrown bad guy), he often crouches & kicks when he attacks & misses chest-high attacks, & he seems to be the fastest/best at attacking behind him when swarmed.

Thanks,
-Jason

It looks like jasonbar took 2nd.  If I understand the rules correctly, since I picked the previous game then jasonbar gets the honors of choosing the next competition.

Wow, is it over already!??!

I had no idea--I was just playing off & on the last week or so & didn't break into 2nd place until last night.  Good thing I posted last night instead of waiting to see if I could do better.

Nice choice--I enjoyed it.

New game pick coming shortly, probably tonight.  I've got it narrowed down to a few, but I want to give them 1 more play before finalizing it.

Thanks,
-Jason
