Title: Updated Release News?
Post by: MikeyMike78 on August 23, 2016, 06:00:12 pm
Hi
So I have used Mala for the past few years and it's starting to get really dated.  Been looking at some new frontend (GameEX etc), as I have multiple systems being emulated.

Is there any news on a new release.  1.82 went beta in 2011... it's been 5 years.  Is there active development and if so, any type of expected release date?
Thanks!

No.  It's not being developed.  No new releases are coming.  I wish someone would make a clone.

Shame.  I use it, and like it.  What's the next best thing out there?

I've heard AttractMode will allow users to use Mala themes. Has anyone had any luck with attract mode? I don't think it works well on windows xp, and I know for sure it doesn't work well with CRT_emudriver, which is what I use. It simply won't display fonts correctly. So AttractMode may be your next best bet.

I recently switched from MALA to AttractMode, and absolutely love it!  I didn't attempt to automatically port my layouts or game lists, so I can't speak to how well that works; I just recreated them from scratch (except with the same art I had used before) while I learned the Squirrel scripting.  It is quite powerful, and extremely customizable, especially if you're willing to delve into the scripting.  As for running on XP, it is running smooth as butter for me on old, crappy hardware, and far more responsively than MALA ever did!
